Sheree was a grade-one pupil at Rosebud Primary School and lived on South Road. According to her mother, Kerrie Greenhill, she was a very talkative and lively little girl; she said that she was her first born and was very special to her. While Sheree was exceptionally friendly, she still knew of stranger danger and would never speak to somebody that she didn’t know. In fact, Kerri had always told Sheree if a stranger approached her, to run to the nearest house for help.
That afternoon, Kerri handed Sheree money to pick up a litre of milk, a bottle of lemonade, meat pies and some cigarettes. She also handed her 50 cents to buy herself some sweets. As she left the home that afternoon, Sheree called out to her mother: “I’ll be back in a couple of minutes, mum. I love you.” Unbeknownst to Kerri, this was the last time she would ever speak to her daughter.
Around an hour after Sheree left the milk bar with the groceries, the alarm was raised. A local resident discovered Sheree’s abandoned bicycle and groceries in the middle of Parkmore Avenue, a dirt road located just off the Nepean Highway, around 100 metres away from the milk bar. The man who found the bicycle placed it against a nearby tree and moments later, another local woman spotted the bicycle. This woman knew Sheree and her family and recognized it immediately as Sheree’s bicycle. The woman contacted Sheree’s other, Kerri Greenhill, who in turn called police to report her daughter missing.
Investigators would launch an extensive and exhaustive air and ground search for Sheree, mobilizing all available resources including sniffer dogs, state emergency services and country fire authority crews. They stopped motorists on the Nepean Highway and near the crime scene and handed them photographs of Sheree and asking them if they had seen her. In addition, over 100 volunteers assisted in the search for Sheree. They trudged through the surrounding woodland and combed the shoreline. However, the search turned up no evidence. It was if Sheree had vanished into thin air. Investigators wasted no time in announcing that they were extremely concerned for Sheree’s safety.
The following day, Sheree’s mother, Kerri, made a tearful plea on national television for her safe return. She said: “If someone has got her, bring her home – she has been through enough trauma. She lost her little brother last year from cot death. Please bring her home. We love her too much. Don’t hurt her, she’s only six.” Kerri also revealed that around two months earlier, somebody had attempted to abduct Sheree. She said that Sheree had been taken to school by a taxi one morning and on her way home, a man approached her as she cycled home alone. Kerri said that following the terrifying ordeal, Sheree hadn’t been allowed to cycle home alone for a while.

This Magnetic Force Of A Man
Henry is captivated by Alex Claremont-Diaz, there's no other way to describe the heat in his belly or the instant infatuation. For a long time, Henry is hopeless, dreaming a dream that seems so far away. When a media disaster strikes and things change for the better, Henry is left overwhelmed by the intensity of Alex - the man himself is a force to be reckoned with. In their heavier moments, Henry leans into the soft grip of dark curls, leans into the feeling of being grounded by another. Read to find out how Henry navigates all the big moments in their relationship, one hair pull at a time.
Caught Beneath the Landslide
What if Henry hadn't been emotionally unavailable leading to him being rude to Alex upon first meeting him in Melbourne? What if, instead of hating each other, their relationship starts right then and there? Come find out what happens when Henry and Alex find themselves growing up together, nursing a connection, and navigating hurdles in life without the fear of being alone in the fight. What could our boys possibly get up to now?
When Everything's Made To Be Broken
Henry is happy to be back at Etton College for his senior year but that's thrown off course by the president's son untimely arrival. A personal catastrophe brings Alex to England to rain on Henry's parade - at least, that's what the Prince thinks when the First Son arrives. Soon, Henry finds that there's a lot more to Alex and the relationship meant to exist between them.
Keep Breaking Me In
After a long night, Henry isn't expecting Shaan to knock on his door to bring bad news. Yet, his equerry stands there with a sheepish look on his face, nonetheless. Henry is quick to find out that Phillip got his hands on a damning video and plans to use it as a way to dishonorably discharge Henry from military service. Too bad Phillip doesn't recognize the other man in the video - Alex Claremont-Diaz is a high caliber Civil Rights lawyer just waiting to defend instances just like this.
Try To Document This Light
Buying the brownstone is both the start of Henry's path away from the crown and a concrete future for himself and Alex. It's a place he can call home with the man that he loves, a place where they can grow, change, and shift into the men they're going to be for the world to come. After a lifetime of not really belonging anywhere, Henry finds a space that's truly his. Read to catch little peaks into his life with Alex and what the future has in store for them between the walls of that simple little brownstone.
Just the Thought Of You (Gets Me So High)
"Amy helped me plan it."What went into Henry's ocean crossing surprise? What were his thoughts going to the DNC where he'd finally see Alex on the stage, doing what he loves & looking amazing while doing it? Read to find out Henry's side of things as the night of the DNC unfolds.
I Like That Thing You Do
Ever since the first polo match Alex attended, his obsession with Henry on a horse has only grew. Years into their relationship, Alex is still hanging onto the pitch's fence, watching with rapt fascination. Read to find out what happens when Phillip asks a question that creates a lust monster Alex can't control. No one ever said those white pants Henry wears aren't meant to be destroyed.
With the View In the Morning (You Won't Ever Go Back)
Despite being together just shy of a year, the night of the election is a first for both Alex and Henry. After sneaking away to linger in their victory, Henry is surprised by Alex's initiative. They're on his home court so Henry is expecting the usual but Alex has something different in mind. The shift is enough to knock Henry's world off kilter in the best of ways. Read to find out how Henry survives his first time topping.
Can We Dance In the Dark?
"Who would you be?""Be a writer. Live in Paris."Inspired by this beautiful quote, this fic follows Henry Fox, a writer who's famous for crafting stories about a fictional prince - The Royal Blue series follows James through the trials and tribulations of being young, royal, and gay as a maypole. He loves what he does but inspiration is dry. He can't find the words and is severely stuck in a bout of writer's block. To try and abate it, Henry takes David for a walk - fate, the dear she is, finds a way to intervene. After a collision, Henry comes face to face with Alex Claremont-Diaz, law student and first son of the United States. Read to find out how their relationship develops into something worth writing about.
This Happily Ever After
For such a natural, easy sort of relationship like Alex and Henry's, there is a lot of weight on their shoulders. Despite themselves, they're making history with each new step they take in their relationship. It's a good thing, then, that neither man is a stranger to the limelight. When Alex teases about them making history, Henry doesn't know how deep that comment will run or how true it actually is. Read to catch a few pieces of Alex & Henry's relationship where they make their own history. Sometimes, two people are meant to shape the world, no matter the circumstance.Or - 5 times Alex jokes about making history and 1 time Henry reciprocates.
I Get Lost, I Get Washed Away
Law school is stressful from the start but it reaches a fever pitch during Alex's last semester. He decides Henry's birthday is the perfect excuse to get away from it all so he hatches a plan to not only be there for Henry's birthday but surprise him with his presence, too. They're on the cusp of something in their relationship and Alex is ready to help whatever it is along. Everything works out perfectly, down to the moonlit car ride they take at the end of the night. Read to find out how an overstimulated Alex pampers the birthday boy - in the end, they both take care of each other.
I Got A Girl Crush
Alex Claremont-Diaz has been the object of Henry's affection for longer than the prince cares to admit. He's usually pretty sane about it but his brother's wedding has put everything on high alert. After reading a particularly upsetting gossip rag, Henry is distraught by the idea of seeing Alex with her - Nora Holleran - everything that Henry is not. He decides he wants what she has as the night goes on and her closeness with Alex becomes apparent. Though, Henry is quick to learn that not all things are what they appear. Sometimes, it takes a little frosting on the cheek to realize how wrong one can truly be.
Then Wiggle With It
What if, instead of balking at the request, Henry takes Alex up on his offer to dance during 'Get Low'? Alex has been wondering why he feels a little funny whenever Henry is around but an errant touch while their bodies are close causes him to reevaluate everything he's come to know about himself. Can the simple bump and grind of a raucous club song really change everything for Alex? And does their relationship shift now that Alex comes to a groundbreaking realization much quicker than ever imaginable? Read to find out!
The Perfect Genius Of Our Hands and Mouths
The first time they make love, that soft press of Henry's hand to the small of Alex's back is a guiding light. He's not a fumbling boy learning how to walk - he's a man with someone showing him the ropes. It's a wonderful thing that Alex never forgets. In fact, he comes to rely on that hand on the small of his back leading him through the ups and downs of life. Read to see a few slices of Alex and Henry's time together where making love and feeling that touch play starring roles in the biggest instances of their relationship.
A Solid Embrace
Despite the not so good nature of the holiday, Thanksgiving has always been special to Alex. Throughout the years, he learns things, eats good food, and grows into the man he is today. This year, Henry gets the freedom to spend the holiday with Alex and his family out at the lake house in Texas. Determined to make it the best yet, Alex goes through all the motions, perfecting them along the way. Somewhere throughout the day, his priority changes, however - Henry in a striped rugby shirt is suddenly the object of his fixation, food and tradition forgotten. Read to find out how a little football makes Alex realize his family is finally complete.

ooh i’m curious about the age gap one 👀
ooh yes that was an attempted gift for my lovely bestie @lilyrizzy that i gave up on
He is seventeen when Daniel first meets him. Seventeen and a terrible liar. Seventeen and claiming to be eighteen, like Daniel or anyone else in this room could be fooled. His delivery is terrible too, tongue stumbling over the number, cheeks flushed, shoulders squared.
“Is that so?” Daniel says and doesn’t call the kid out because if Max Verstappen wants to pretend to be of age, that’s his business.
“Yeah,” Max says, and the beer in his hand is proof that he fooled at least one person this evening.
Either that or the bartender decided to not give a fuck too. Or maybe Max promised an autograph, a photo, something. Not Daniel’s problem.
“And what brings you to Melbourne?” Daniel asks, just for the hell of it, just because he’s curious what other unconvincing lies the kid will come up with. He takes a sip from his whiskey, raising his eyebrows at him.
He doesn’t disappoint.
“Just- With friends. A trip, you know,” he says, and he gives Daniel a smile, that’s certainly something.
“Oh yeah?” Daniel snorts. “And where are your friends?”
Like he doesn’t know that Max is here for the Australian Grand Prix –to drive for ToroRosso, to drive his first ever Formula 1 race.
He’s not surprised that Max doesn’t know him. There is no reason why he’d know a random RedBull mechanic. Then again, there’s no reason why he should be talking to Daniel in the first place, and yet he came up to Daniel, all awkward but seemingly determined and Daniel finds him intriguing. Or –well. Amusing maybe. He isn’t quite sure yet.
“They went home already. The hotel, I mean,” Max answers and this time it’s almost believable, the way he keeps eye contact, and doesn’t waver. He only seems to have to think about it for a second, almost deserving of a pat on the back.
Daniel hums a little in response, takes another sip from his glass, chases the taste of his lips with his tongue.
He doesn’t miss the way Max’s eyes flicker down to follow the movement.
So that’s why he’s talking to Daniel.
That’s why he came over after hovering around on the sidelines for a while, looking painfully out of place. Daniel is under no illusions that he is the only one in this dive bar who has spotted and recognized the kid, but so far he’s been left alone. Which probably won’t last and if Daniel was a good guy, a responsible adult, he’d be sending him back to the paddock right now, wouldn’t let this go on, but Max looks up at him and introduces himself as fucking Julian, asking for Daniel’s name, and Daniel decides to play along some more.
“It’s Daniel,” he says truthfully.
“And you are, like. From around here?” Max asks, passing his beer from his left to his right hand and back. He looks at Daniel hopefully, what he’s wishing for, Daniel doesn’t know.
“I’m from Perth, originally,” he answers and of course Max doesn’t show any kind of recognition in his eyes so Daniel concedes: “Western Australia.”
“Oh, that’s cool,” Max says and Daniel bites his tongue on asking why that’s cool, on teasing Max for his attempts at making conversation. “Are you here with your friends too?”
His commitment to the lie is commendable, Daniel will give him that. Still, he snorts.
“I’m 37, mate,” he says. “All my friends are married with kids.”

more customer service voice Damian hcs, bc it's been a bit.
After learning the "regular citizen" voice, Damian decides he has to master more accents and dialects, in case he's on a mission away from Gotham and needs to blend in. (This is the son of Batman we're talking about, of course he plans for these things). Over the summer Damian travels to large cities around the world, and familiarizes himself with their way of speaking.
Cass found out very early on and decided she's going with Damian, bc I think Cass would enjoy sightseeing. But after they were caught leaving for Moscow(and after Damian explained that he was doing this for research at least 7 times) it was decided someone should supervise them. Dick patrols Bludhaven, so that was a no. Jason and Tim were automatically out. Steph went to supervise them, but was exempt after they were arrested in Seoul. So Duke ended up being supervision, unless Dick was available to go with them.
This doesn't mean they didn't get into chaos bc of Duke. No, it's bc with Duke, they can be invisible and not be caught doing the chaos. Duke does enjoys the trips with them tho, mostly for the sightseeing and food.
One time, Cass convinced Bruce to join them(how, no one really knows. Cass is just magic like that). And they had a good time in Rio de Janeiro, tho Bruce was almost recognized a few times, and he would sometimes try to sneak off and work. Unfortunately, Cass's attempts to invite Babs weren't as fruitful, mostly bc she didn't understand why Damian wanted to actually go to those places instead of learning it through the chatter radios of those areas instead. Damian's only response was that it wasn't the same and being there changes everything about it.(he was actually doing both methods).
Damian, Cass, and Duke do run into Talia at one point. She was intrigued as to what her son was doing in Melbourne with Cassandra, and the newest child Bruce had taken in, but is by no means unhappy to see him. Duke on the other hand, is scared to meet Damian's mom, given her reputation. Damian and cass being so nonchalant about meeting up with her probs didn't help.
There was a small "hi, what are you doing here? Huh, what a coincidence." Type of conversation. And then Duke sticks out his hand and says a (very awkward) "it's nice to meet you, Ms. Al Ghul." Which Talia shakes and says (also very awkwardly) "Uh, Talia is fine. And nice to meet you as well, Duke." Then leaves. Damian was surprised, he's never seen his mother so blatantly awkward before. He's seen her at a loss for words, but she remained elegant as she pondered what to say next. But in that moment, she was shy and dare he say nervous. "Thomas, what did you do to my mother?" "What? I dunno man. I was more worried about her glaring a hole in my skull."
The only trip that Damian went on with someone besides Cass was his trip to England, bc he wanted to go with Alfred. While he knows Cass would do fine, Damian wants to learn as much as he can, and learning from someone who grew up there and is close to him is his best bet. This of course took a lot of work, bc as everyone knows, Alfred Pennyworth is the backbone of the Batfamily, so convincing both him and the rest of the family would take some time and effort. But after a promise from Bruce to not be up to his ears in work while they were gone, Babs noting she will enforce that promise, plus Jason and Duke vowing to protect Alfred's kitchen at all costs, Alfred went with Damian for a week to visit the UK(by far the longest trip Damian went on).
And while the trip wasn't perfect(Damian almost beat a man bloody for insulting Alfred, and lots of bad weather), it was by no means a bad time. Damian picked up the accent and slang almost automatically, Alfred met some of his old friends. By consequence, Damian learned a lot about what his grandfather did before meeting the Wayne family, which he will not retell in a promise to Alfred(but he will say he knows just to mess with the rest of the family)
Did Wayne manor crumble in Alfred's absence? Surprisingly no. For the first couple days, Bruce made good on his promise to take care of himself, but by day 4, Babs had to entirely disconnect the computer when it was time for Bruce to sleep. And if Cass didn't guilt-trip the hell out of him and Steph didn't bully him, he probably wouldn't have fully left the bat-cave. Duke and Jason were able to protect the kitchen for the most part. Jason often made the dinner, and Duke catered to the random cravings of the rest of the family. They did have to call Kate for backup twice, but the smoke alarms never went off.
Overall having to fill Alfred's shoes was a good bonding experience for the family, though not one they would ever try to replicate willingly.
So I think that's all for Damian Wayne's summer world tour.

Lowkey think Maxine is a kpop stan, and especially a Twice girlie. She would most definitely get Xander into it, as well. His preferred groups are NCT and Monsta X but he learned Talk the Talk with Max before she went to a concert-her first ever because of her strict parents. Not only was it her first concert, but she, her brother, and Xander flew to Melbourne to watch the Ready to Be Tour. It changed her life, and they were all sobbing by the end. She’s the type of fan to decorate her light sticks, watch the interviews, and actually knows what they’re saying because she studies Korean. Xander doesn’t really know what he’s doing, but he goes around and talks to everyone, getting excited when recognized, and taking pictures. He loves waving his light stick and singing along to anything he understands.
Nash is also an Ateez fan. His tall, gangly atiny self slaying any concert fit he tries on because of his plethora of cowboy hats and access to suits. Libby also is a hardcore stan, loving the aesthetics and concepts. They both attended a concert, decked out as the most goth cowboy couple you can imagine. I think they also got to meet Seongwha and San backstage, after, snagging a picture with the whole group because Hawthorne ThingsTM. And playing off that, Libby is also an Engine. That vampire concept she *eats* up. They attend concerts in their downtime, whether Queen, Måneskin, indie groups, Kpop, or anything else that catches their vibe. They are the fans who go all out in their concept inspired concert fits, learn the fan chants, and always take pictures with strangers. They love the concert experience.
Don’t think any of the others would be stans, really, but Grayson listens to Le Sserafim and New Jeans occasionally, when he thinks no one is around. Xander found him once. Grayson turned it off immediately with embarrassment as his youngest brother look at him, mystified before excitedly asking him if he knew the dance to Anti-Fragile. Which Grayson begrudgingly admitted that he did. He’s the type of casual-somewhat ashamed listener, who dances in the shower, says he “listens to a little of everything” and side glances albums when he sees them at Barnes and Noble, when tagging along with Avery and Max to go buy books. The one thing he has kept on the low, is that he is a Stay. His bias is Changbin. He will never tell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, right. And Xander got Max and her brother a light stick bouquet. Because he’s best boi, Xander.

Murder in Montparnasse vs Death Defying Feats
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID 1: Screencap from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries Episode 'Murder in Montparnasse'. The imagine is tinted a guazy yellow. Phryne wears a white dress and a big hat in a busy room. /End ID]
[ID 2: Screencap from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries Episode 'Death Defying Feats'. Phryne and Jack stand facing each other in front of a prop guilletine, the empty seats of a theatre visible in the background. Jack has a gloved hand raised and Phryne is placing something in it. Jack looks very grumpy. /End ID]
Murder in Montparnasse vs Death Defying Feats rounds out round one of of our most ridiculous episode (affectionate) tournament!! Remember to consider the following when casting your vote:
Does this plot make any sense at all?
Method of murder(s)
Absurdity of characters' behaviour (main or guest)
Wild historical/cultural/other inaccuracies
Supporting statements
1x7 - Murder in Montparnasse
Nominators say: "Not a single person who's ever been to France was consulted in the making of the episode."
What are the odds that Bert just HAPPENED to witness Phryne’s friend get murdered halfway around the world, ten years before they met? And then Rene is recognized by Bert ten years later!?
Phryne’s French friend from her Paris days a) moved to Melbourne, b) made a copy of his French cafe, and c) called it Cafe Replique. Why on earth? Any one of these things would be ridiculous on its own. We get all three.
The confusing order in which paintings were stolen/auctioned/sold/restolen.
They only use "French" words English speakers will understand. All the accents are terrible.
The painting style is super classic for a "modern" artist.
The wigs. THE BERETS.
The gauzy lens filter in the flashbacks.
"Beep beep"
3x1 - Death Defying Feats
Nominators say: "Ummm"
Jack drinking Henry's 'nerve tonic' and getting hit in the head with a door lol.
Murder method: sabotaged magic show props.
The murderer pretends to be her dead twin sister (who I think she murdered like decades ago?) to try and throw Phryne off.
The contortionist trying to hide in the box and Bert and Cec carting her off to Wardlow.
The mermaid dance.
Somehow Henry Fisher makes it to the end of this episode still alive and not having been smacked in the face by any of Phryne's pals.

Trans community: “misgendering is literal violence” Also trans community: will violently attack from behind over an accidental use of the wrong pronouns
Content Notice: This article contains photos of bruising and physical injury. Reader discretion is appreciated.
A woman in Melbourne, Australia was hospitalized and left with horrific injuries following a brutal attack from a trans activist over what she speculates was retaliation for her gender critical views.
On September 24, 2022, Ruby* and her partner were attending the Punks Pub Crawl, an annual barhopping event for those in the punk rock scene which has been held in Melbourne since 1982. Ruby, a bass guitarist in a local band, had been attending the crawl since she was a teenager. Though she was excited to return to her tradition following the loosening of COVID-19 restrictions, Ruby’s evening turned into a nightmare.
“I had only just arrived with my partner sometime around 3 p.m. There were about 70 people or so attending the crawl. The whole group of us stopped at Carlton Gardens for a group photo,” Ruby recounts, explaining that immediately after the photo was taken she would have an incident that has since left her with a debilitating injury.
“I was walking away, talking to a friend when I noticed one male walking beside the group but in the opposite direction to the rest of us,” Ruby says. “As he passed me he shoulder-barged me hard, and I stopped to address him.”
Ruby describes her attacker as “male, but not obviously ‘trans.’” As she was with a group of individuals belonging to the punk rock community, she didn’t immediately believe he was attempting to present as the opposite sex, and simply thought he was donning classic punk attire.
“He just looked like a metal head with lipstick on, and I had never seen him before in my life,” she says. According to a police report Ruby provided Reduxx, the individual is described as approximately 5’7, with long dark hair. He had been wearing a black shirt and black pants.
Startled by the body check, Ruby confronted the male.
“I said something very close to, ‘Is there a problem here? Do you and I need to have a conversation?’ He started denying and gaslighting. He claimed it was an accident and one of his friends backed him up. It was clearly no accident so I replied, ‘No, he just shoulder-barged me as hard as he could.’”
Ruby says the onlookers immediately seemed to take issue with the pronoun she had used for the man.
“I heard a few murmurs of ‘He?’ Like people were offended at my choice of pronoun,” she says. “I stood facing him for another [few seconds] waiting to see if he was going to kick off, but he seemed to have nothing to say so I turned and walked away.”
But just as she did, Ruby says she was suddenly attacked from behind, with the man pushing her onto the concrete with tremendous force.
“I was wearing a heavy studded leather jacket so I went down hard and fast. I put my left arm out to break the fall with anything other than my head and the impact reverberated all up my arm, shattering my shoulder and breaking my arm at the joint.”
Tumblr media
Ruby says other pub crawl goers told the man to back off, and she says that while she was in extreme pain, she didn’t immediately recognize the extent of the damage. A friend of hers who knew first-aid put her in a makeshift sling, and it quickly became obvious to Ruby that she needed to seek medical treatment.
She first attempted to go to a public hospital, but was left in the emergency waiting room for agonizing hours without proper attention, so she left and later sought help at Austin Hospital, which is reputed for its trauma care. Ruby was sent for a CAT scan and X-Ray where she was diagnosed with a fractured shoulder.
Ruby provided Reduxx medical records from Austin Health showing she was admitted to the emergency short stay unit, and that she was initially slated for a surgical intervention by an orthopedic registrar.
A second orthopedic surgeon Ruby saw while in hospital decided not to operate, feeling her outcomes would be better if she were simply closely monitored and sent for physiotherapy after the initial injury had healed. The surgeon left the possibility of operation open if anything were to come up with the injury in the future.
Tumblr media
In the chaos of her attempts to get medical treatment, Ruby had managed to track down the individual who had assaulted her through a band contact. She recognized her assailant had been friends with an individual who her band had performed with in the past, and skimmed his socials to find more information. She managed to identify the attacker, and, armed with the information, went to Melbourne Police and filed a report after being discharged from hospital.
Ruby supplied Reduxx with the statement she signed and witnessed with a Constable about her ordeal. In the statement, she names Sarah Cadzow, a male who identifies as a “woman,” as being her assailant.
She speculates that their mutual band contact had alerted Cadzow to her views on gender ideology at the Punks Pub Crawl, and that he had body-checked her in retaliation.
“It became clear that someone had been showing the attacker my Facebook posts. The attacker had never been on my Facebook friends list, as far as I know, but his friend was. My Facebook has been all about women’s rights and spaces for about 4 years now, since I found out about men in women’s prisons,” Ruby says. “We messaged the friend shortly afterwards and he helpfully agreed in writing as to what happened, but attempted to justify it because apparently [Cadzow] was ‘defending his community’ by attacking a middle aged woman from behind.”
In his youth, Cadzow had been associated with LGBTQ youth charity Minus18.
Tumblr media
Cadzow was listed as a development team member of the Trans 101 project, a “gender diversity crash course” aimed at youth supported by Minus18, YGender, and the Sydney Myer Fund. He also penned a biography for the Rainbow Story Project, praising Minus18 and boasting about the fact he transitioned when he was approximately 14 years old.
Despite having provided Melbourne Police with two witness statements as well as the identity of her attacker, Ruby explains that it took months for Cadzow to finally be charged in a process that initially left her feeling abandoned.
“I can’t speak for police resources or procedures, but it was very concerning to me that it took so long to charge him. They seemed to be handling the assailant very delicately,” she says. “I wanted there to be some immediate disincentive for him to do this again – to me or anyone else – and the police didn’t seem to take that concern seriously at all.”
Ruby says she observed a definite “tone shift” when police learned her assailant was transgender.
“The delay in charging and the manner in which they went about it certainly felt to me like a reluctance to act. This was very serious violence and all I could think about during that waiting time was ‘Where are the consequences? What’s stopping him doing it again? What happens if he sees a woman in an Adult Human Female t-shirt?'”
On January 25, almost exactly four months after the incident, Cadzow was finally handed charges related to Ruby’s assault. He is currently scheduled for a hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on April 14.
Tumblr media
While Ruby expresses some relief that Cadzow has now been charged and the legal component of her ordeal is moving after months of stagnation, she has been left with the lingering impact of her attack.
“I play bass guitar, and at first we weren’t sure if I was going to be able to play gigs anymore. Fortunately, it’s looking like I will be able to, just not too often and it hurts like a bastard to tune up,” she says, explaining that her impacted arm can no longer be lifted above the shoulder
“I will never swim again, [or] shoot hoops with my son, get things from high shelves, or hang washing. The doctor said: ‘your ability to lift that arm above your head ended when you hit the ground.'”
In relation to Cadzow’s upcoming hearing, Ruby says she hopes the consequences for Cadzow are serious enough to act as a deterrent.
“I hope others who may have similar ideas realize that you simply can’t just go around attacking women with impunity.”
But even then, Ruby explains that she has concerns about how the case will be handled by Australia’s criminal justice system, which has become notorious for its position on gender self-identification.
“This was a clear-cut act of male violence but I have my doubts as to whether statistics or records will reflect that in the end,” she says.
“It’s getting very scary to be a woman speaking up about women’s rights these days. This kind of violence is going way, way too far and it has to stop before something even worse happens.”

This time a vicbourne one FINALLY! 👑🎩
I'm thinking about making this a chapter 1 of a 2 chapters fic. The 2nd chapter will definitely be nsfw. It will be the first time that I write nsfw stuff so I'm pretty much terrified.
Without further ado, here's MY FIRST EVER VICBOURNE FIC.

CHAPTER 1 (?)
Queen Victoria's journal, 30th November 1848,
It has come to my knowledge that my dear friend
Five days ago I've received news that my former prime minister
Today I've finally gathered strength to write again
He is gone.
V.R.
Seconds, minutes, hours, days. They passed her by but she registered nothing. She eats little and barely opens her mouth to speak. Her husband pretends like he doesn't know the reason why she's like this and his attempts to behave normally are starting to annoy her. She just lost her best friend. Her confident. Her other being. Her kindred spirit. The only one who understood her, who supported her and protected her while never treating her as an ignorant child. A girl queen. As her private counsel (and even her husband) liked to call her behind her back.
She could carry on, she could live in this facade of a marriage as long as he still breathed the same air as her. She could wake up and make believe as if she was going to travel to his house to visit a friend. She could picture their conversations and how he laughed. His words of comfort. She could do all of that as long as he still lived. Now everytime she thought of him, everytime someone mentions him in a conversation. It is all in the past tense. Like they are speaking of a ghost.
And they do love to do that. Specially Albert. As a way to try to get at her nerves or to bring any reaction from her. She would not allow that. She could suffer with her own solitude inside, but her posture on the outside would remain as a queen, never let them know how hard it is to bear, just like he taught her.
A week after Lord Melbourne passed away, she received a small package. The writing was strange and no signature to be found.
Inside the package was a small piece of paper and a strange oval music box. It was a message from her departed friend, her beloved William Lamb, she thought. It seems like it was written in a hurry. It only said:
For one last night, until the sunrise.
She ran and shut herself in a room. Her mouth was dry. Was this some kind of a jest? Maybe her husband wasn't over playing stupid games with her. She inquired who delivered the package and Mr Penge, her steward, only said it came from Brocket Hall.
She thought it best to deal with this after everyone had retired to their bedrooms and the palace was quiet. She went to the library in the far west wing and closed the doors and windows behind her. She wound up the music box. It was Mozart...of course it was Mozart! It was his favourite after all. Her eyes shone with tears. A tiny couple danced in rounds in the center of the box. A very tall elegant man and a tiny lady in a white dress. Very much like her coronation dress she thought. The music made her feel strange and the tiny dolls dancing were almost hypnotizing. She felt like she was being drawn inside the box and shut her eyes fast.
When she opened them again she gasped in surprise. She wasn't in Buckingham Palace anymore. She was in a crowded street at night. The cold was intense and she felt immediately terrified. Until she heard the most unmistakable voice. A voice that could always bring her warmth and safety. It was the raspy voice of her beloved Lord M. She turned back to look and almost thought she was going insane. It was indeed her Lord M but he was much much younger.
She recognized him from a painting she saw once in Brocket Hall. Long curly hair, gentle eyes, cheekbones so sharp they could cut her very soul and she would be glad of it. He walked inside a house and Victoria followed after. It was one of those establishments where men gather to drink at night. She heard stories about them but never been inside one herself. This couldn't be a dream then, she thought. She sat in a table close to where he sat. She touched the table, solid. She touched the window, solid. She felt the warmth of the fire, real. If all those things were real, then...He...must be too.
She sat and watched him and his friends banter and drink. She was happy just to be again in the same room as he was, although she could admit the noise was too much for her standards. A young girl approached her and asked her if she wanted anything to drink. She suddenly remembered she didn't have any money on her, only her tiny music box which she held on for her dear life. She felt embarrassed and looked over to the fire as excuse. “I'm just a poor woman that needs to warm herself for a few minutes and then I'll be on my way” Victoria told the girl expecting her sympathy, the girl nodded in understanding and walked away.
When Victoria looked over to William again she saw he was already surrounded with young barmaids. “One more pretty than the next...and they're all so tall” she thought sadly. She looked at her reflection through the window. Only a few years of marriage life made her look so much older. There were already a few wrinkles on her face and tiny white hairs on her head. But more than that she didn't sleep well for days and ate little. Her appearance was more ghostly than anything else.
As she turned her eyes again she found him looking straight at her. Those piercing green eyes giving her the full force of his stare. That, combined with his irresistible half smile, always made her weak in the knees. She immediately looked down, her cheeks flaming. When she looked up again was to discover he was sitting right across her at her table. She couldn't breathe let alone think. He gave her that smile she knew so well.
“Hello there. I come here every night and never seen you before...are you a newcomer to these parts?”
“I'm Nancy, I've come from Prussia seeking work at the court...my Lord!” (she quickly corrected herself)
He was smiling at her. And she missed that. She missed him so much. She couldn't help but to smile herself. It was her first genuine smile in days. She became extremely aware of how he was staring at her. She only now remembered that she was wearing a simple night dress (almost see through) and her hair was styled in one simple braid. She flushed. It didn't matter if she was the younger and he the older or the opposite. It seems she would never feel adequate next to him. But he couldn't be staring at her like that? Could he? The same way he used to do when they were dancing and she was much younger.
As if reading her thoughts he offered his hand to her from across the table. “It's fine, I understand how you feel. Being in a new place and feeling different from everyone around you.”
She looked at his hand and wondered if it would feel as real as all the other things she touched. She was so starved for this man that she forgot all protocol and extended her own hand to him. His touch, his warm fingers in her like when they danced. Finally!! It's been so long!!
When she moved to be a little closer she accidentally showed her left hand above the table. His eyes darted immediately for it as the big ring came into his vision. “It seems I'm already late.” He said with a sad smile. She hid her hand with shame (“but it was you who pushed me into it” she thought)
She noticed he didn't let go of her hand as any gentleman would do at this point. It seems as though it made his desire grow. She remembered now that he was always close to danger liaisons and scandals. Perhaps she was the one who stirred that in him, she thought with a naughty pride.
They talked and talked. William made her smile with his jests and paid for her lots of strange yellow beverages. She felt young again but so much more because she could never behave like any other normal woman of her age. They soon reached their old favourite subject, politics.
“It seems old king Ed is sick the poor man...and they say his newborn daughter will take over because all his brothers have no heirs. Can you imagine, a queen in England after all these years?”
“Do you think it a mistake, because she's still so young and everything?” She asked, her heartbeat faster than ever.
“From my perspective her youth is actually a positive thing. It means more time to make mistakes and to learn from them. She will be wiser than most kings and with half their age I can bet on that!”
It seems William has always been the perfect statesman. He always knew the right thing to say to her. When she got back to her own time she would make sure to make him proud of her. Then...she remembered the note...it said until sunrise only! It meant that whatever magic brought her there would be gone by sunrise. She could not let him see her fading away. He would go mad for sure. And she didn't want to say goodbye again. It would kill her. As she saw the first light of dawn she got up urgently from her table and ran to the door.
A very drunk William Lamb followed her outside and managed to grab her hand at the last minute. “Where are you going Ma'am? I want to dance with you!” He laughed, bringing her slowly to him. Their bodies pressed closely together.
She managed a sad smile at the irony, as she touched his face, and parted her lips to say “Not tonight” as he had replied to her that night at her coronation ball when they first danced and she realised that she would love him forever. But he was faster than her and touched her lips with his.
It was a dream. She was dreaming now surely. And she never wanted to wake up again. In that kiss she gave everything she couldn't give him all those years. Tongues. Tears. Body. Heart. Soul. But she was fading. Drifting away. In the back of her mind Mozart played. She opened her eyes again and she was back at Buckingham. The music and the box were gone.
To be continued (?)

I wrote this story back in High School for a class-wide Bad Hemingway Contest. It was one of very few creative projects I actually had in that class (as opposed to weekly essays), so I cut loose creating a bizarre tale of futuristic central Florida, high-stakes air hockey, non-alcoholic tasty drinks, and implied lunar colonization. Because it disappeared along with my old blog and wasn’t online anywhere else, I’m republishing it here. I had a dream with a very similar aesthetic recently, so perhaps another Zee Leonova tale may be in the cards…
6-6
The dock was long and dark and hung here and there with strings of old Christmas lights that swayed slightly in the coastal breeze and beyond them was the tidal estuary that some fool cartographer had once thought was a river and the name had stuck and beyond it you could see the lights of Melbourne winking. I sat at the long windowsill with no glass sipping my seltzer-and-cranberry-juice and trying to figure out what words to put in the bright, cream-colored notebook on the dark wooden sill and giving up and looking at the stars over the river that was not a river and enjoying the breeze.
The other divers had come up from the ocean and the pilots had come down from the sky and the vacationers had come in from the beaches and tacky roadside attractions and I could hear the beeps and ringing noises from the tables on the other side of the restaurant as they all wasted money and time.
“Writing again?” Bob asked. He was the owner and he was slowly wandering from table to table surveying the crowd.
“There’s a contest. ‘Could use the money. Gear’s not cheap.” I said.
“What’s it about?”
“I’m not sure. Something in the 1920s. Bullfighters. Fiestas. Depressed people.”
“Not your usual, Zee.”
“It sounds boring, but the rules were oh, so strict.”
The man and the woman walked in and we stopped to watch them and the man went to the bar and ordered two large lemonades and the robot brought them and the couple sat down. He was a wonderful bartender and Bob had bought him very cheap and his bronze metallic skin and dark optical sensors glinted in the dim light. Their khakis were dirty and the man carried a large camera bag and I felt as though I had seen him before.
“I’ve been a perfect fool, haven’t I?” The woman asked.
“Yes, and you ought to be ashamed of it. I was about to take the shot and your bloody sneeze scared it away.” The man drank his lemonade and ordered another.
The Not-So-Great Blue Heron, he meant. They were bird-watchers and they had come to try and photograph it because it was very rare and bird-watchers kept showing up to try and catch a glimpse of that wonderful and glorious bird that ate fish and knew not of human miseries and cares.
“That’s Arnold, you know.” Bob told me, as the man drank a third lemonade in one gulp and ordered another.
I had heard of Ken Arnold before. He had been one of the best shooters on the circuit and he had won the championship at Cabeus in my father’s time and retired, but I had heard he found retirement boring after the constant action and thrown himself into photographic safaris.
“Oh please not another, Ken. You’ll get the runs.” The woman pleaded.
“I won’t get the runs. I’m only having some lemonade. I like the taste of lemonade.” He said, and ordered another.
“She’s right, old man. Too much citrus is bad for the digestion.” Bob said, approaching them. “As the proprietor of this establishment—”
“Do you know who I am? I’m Ken Arnold! The best puck-shooter there ever was! I’ll give five hundred big ones to you or anybody else in this cruddy joint who can beat me at the table! Five hundred!” Arnold knocked his chair over as he stood up, prepared to fight Bob. Bob would have been no match for him, either in a fight or a game, so I interceded.
We went to a table in the corner, by a tank full of native tropical fish that I recognized as a diver. They shone in neon hues like a fireworks display over Walt Disney World. Bob turned on the air and the black lights and Arnold gripped his mallet in his meaty hands and I grabbed mine and the puck shot out and glowed candy-apple green under the black lights and I lashed out and knocked it into his goal and scored first blood. But even retired and full of too much lemonade, Arnold was skilled and he matched me and managed to drink two more lemonades as he did so, and soon the score was 6-6 with only one point remaining.
If Arnold’s rage had not made him careless, I never would have made it. He stretched to block one of my shots and left his goal wide open. I fired the puck forward and it flew like a rifle bullet and Arnold was a half-second too slow to do anything about it. The puck flew home into his goal and with an electronic ping, the scoreboard read “6-7”.
I smiled and wondered if the dive shop was still open.

Okay, okay, so I know I have already posted this video way too many times with completely unnecessary details, but I’ve found another one! Since the first time I found it, it’s bothered me that I didn’t know what Adam Hills was talking about in some of it. He mentions that there was a fire at the Gilded Balloon (the venue where they are), which is a pretty easy lyric to untangle, since it’s just a reference to the fact that eight months earlier, there was in fact a fire at the Gilded Balloon, the venue where this takes place. It burned down (along with much of its neighbourhood, which was called Cowgate, which I’ve decided should be the name for this whole incident) and was rebuilt. Adam then suggests that they’ll have to burn down the rebuilt version if they don’t do well enough.
There’s another bit where he says to take the cow out the front and up the Royal Mile, which is also pretty simple. The Royal Mile is the bit of Edinburgh that I’ve gone through on Google Earth 200 times in the last two years, because I think it seems like it’s probably the coolest place in the world even in months that aren’t August. I think they may, in fact, have actually taken the cow up the Royal Mile.
However, there was another bit I did not get. “Erin Coren, she’s outside, she’s got petrol dripping down her eyes.” A lot of the old Edinburgh video clips are very self-referential, they’ll mention some other comedian or other type of act who’s at the festival, whether or not they’re at that actual show. Or they’ll just reference someone who’d be known to Scottish audiences. If I don’t recognize the name, I can usually work it out by Googling. So I’d tried Googling this one, but got nothing. I did not understand who Erin Coren was, or why she’d be outside with petrol on her face.
Today, I’m watching Rock ‘n’ Roll Nerd, a very good documentary about Tim Minchin. I’ve spent the last week watching all of Tim Minchin’s old DVD shows before watching his show that was just released last month, and decided to put on the documentary at the end. Rockumentary-type things can be hit and miss, but this one’s pretty cool because it was made by a friend of his who started filming before he got famous. They didn’t just use old footage or have him tell stories about what he was doing in his early career; they had stuff filmed for this documentary from that time.
I’m only part of the way through the documentary at the moment, but I have to stop and say I’ve found it! This documentary shows Tim Minchin doing his first show at the Melbourne Festival, when he was still trying to emerge in music/comedy. The filmmaker interviewed various audience members outside the venue after the show, including one who said she runs one of the biggest venues in Edinburgh, and this show is clearly ready for Edinburgh, he should take it there. Her name is Karen Koren, and in the next scene we see Tim Minchin taking her up on the offer to call her and bring his show to her theatre, which is called the Gilded Balloon.
That’s why I didn’t find it by Googling – her name is Karen Koren, not what I’d heard Adam say, which is Erin Coren. And I’d been searching with terms that assumed she was a comedian or musician, not the club owner. When I search the correct name accompanied by the correct job title, I find plenty of results.
So that’s that line explained. I think Adam Hills was saying that Karen Koren was waiting outside the Gilded Balloon with petrol because if their shows didn’t make enough money for her venue that year, she’d have to pour petrol on it and set it on fire, presumably for the insurance money. Possibly also implying that that’s how the first fire happened.
Actually, the whole thing gets more coherent with that information. I thought Adam Hills, who was so drunk he forgot which Eminem song he was supposed to be singing, was just throwing out lines. But in this context they make sense in order. "There was a fire at the Gilded Balloon, the police said no one else was to blame. If this season doesn't go well, this fucking venue's going up in flames... Karen Koren, she's outside, she's got petrol dripping down her eyes." He's saying the police were wrong about the fire being no one's fault, it is in fact the club owner burning down her own building when it doesn't make enough money, and she's ready to do it again if they're not impressive enough with this cow.
It is wildly disproportionate - completely out of proportion to how much this actually matters - how satisfying I find it to have finally tied up that end, and when I wasn’t even looking for the answer! Cowgate is a mystery that reveals itself to me a little at a time. I am so fucking pleased to now have the context required to get this joke that Adam Hills made in 2003. Someday I will solve the central mystery of where the cow came from and why they took it apart (so far, efforts to find that have led me down some strange paths of learning that apparently facsimile cows are not uncommon features to just find strewn about Edinburgh), but in the meantime, I’m quite pleased with this.

Or - 5 times Alex jokes about making history and 1 time Henry reciprocates.

Experiment Result
I must confess that it's all a bit of a blur. We managed to travel from Melbourne to Augathella in one day, a journey that took 22 hours. Charging the Tesla every four hours was necessary, which interfered with our ability to travel non-stop. Despite this, the autopilot features allowed us to drive for much longer periods than we could have in a traditional fuel vehicle, making the car a plus for long-distance drives. My wife Christine and I took turns driving; I would sleep while she drove, and vice versa.
My patient daughter, Francis, often receives complaints from her teachers about her behavior in class, so I may view her through rose-colored glasses. However, she was exemplary during the trip, sitting in the back of the car for 22 hours without any issues, composing music on her iPad, playing songs, and enjoying the scenery.
After searching the internet to find anyone who had covered as many kilometers as quickly in a Tesla and finding no results, my motivation waned. We stopped in Augathella for a night's rest. The next phase was only a three-hour drive to my in-laws' property in Bacadline. The story, shared with locals, was met with fascination, as they were influenced by media claims that electric cars are merely toys that cannot travel far.
This being a brand-new vehicle, concerns about breakdowns were minimal. However, I'd like to note that concerns would be low even with a two or three-year-old electric car due to its simplicity. In my view, they are far superior for long-distance travel, even considering charging times, because they do not break down unless you run out of battery. The sensitivity of a Tesla to any mechanical fault is so high that any slight issue would be flagged by the computer before becoming critical.
No product is perfect, and while I'm not an evangelist for any brand, it's worth noting that the Tesla Model Y, although excellent, has minor issues that need addressing to make it more user-friendly for long travels.
Tesla's system is closed—you cannot add your own apps to the center console without hacking, and the current map system only plans routes around Tesla superchargers. It does not recognize third-party chargers automatically, making trip planning via the console almost impossible in Australia.
We used third-party apps for planning. This is a ridiculous constraint given the lack of Tesla infrastructure in Australia. However, charging at state-operated and private chargers was straightforward. We could have reduced our charging costs if we had traveled more slowly, but we chose to maintain a quick pace. On the return trip, we took it slower and made several stops, including Griffith, where I visited my cousin Dom and explored the unique culture of Gritth and its hard-working Sicilian locals.
We could've completed the trip without paying for charging if we were willing to take more time. I have no real bias—the Tesla EV was right for our needs, but I'm also fine with petrol cars. It's important to address the vast amount of incorrect information about EVs in the media; they can indeed manage long distances well.
Stopping every four hours for a break is a good practice, so to me, the charging issue is a moot point. For anyone who drives as much as I do, an EV seems to be the way to go. I tried most other options besides the Polestar, and none were as enjoyable as the Tesla I chose.

TESTIMONIALS
“Tarot readings with Shaina have been jaw-dropping in their accuracy. Guided meditations bring nagging questions into clear focus. We have received messages in our late son's vernacular, that we clearly recognize as his “voice”- the essence of his spirit. Shaina has never wavered in her confidence or humility. Yes, both. Though she is humble about her gifts, her confidence in their authenticity shines through. Shaina is a sweet, gentle, compassionate soul, we are grateful to have in our lives.” - Shelley and Chris Buck (Film Director- Los Angeles, CA, USA.)
“When you enter into a session with Shaina you get the immediate sense that she genuinely wants to help. Her calming and understanding presence alone is healing and centering, and she creates a space that is safe and clear of illusion or judgment…People have to earn my trust, and I heavily value ethics and honor. So, when I tell you I trust this person and see them as a mentor that I value a lot- it holds weight.”
“Shaina’s intuition and empathy is extremely impressive. She always knows exactly where the blockage is, and where it is living in my body…She taps into you and leads you to the tools you’ll need next on your journey. She treats divination like the sacred act it is, and she is very grounded and sincere in her approach.”
"As a professor of anthropology, I tend to regard tarot and other 'new age' practices with a mix of fascination and skepticism...the experience was not what I expected in many ways, and in other ways it was precisely what I envisioned. Shaina is always an engaging, attentive and generous interlocutor; someone who really listens to your stories and engages with your thoughts and feelings in a way that reflects her understanding of YOUR experience, as opposed to someone who simply puts HERSELF in your shoes. It's perhaps this capacity - as a truly empathetic person that makes her such an amazing tarot practitioner. She takes your story, your energy, your situation, and helps you to understand it more clearly in a way that makes sense to YOU. Perhaps it's the lack of hubris that Shaina brings to the practice that makes her so compelling. She's not there to prove anything, to mete out wisdom that only she has access to, or to position herself as some kind of authority figure. Rather, she works with you, through you, using the tools she has at hand, to bring a truly enriching experience. Shaina, for all the reasons I mentioned, but especially because of her capacity for genuine, unpretentious and generous empathy, has a gift for tarot. If you've ever been 'taro-curious', I would highly recommend seeking a reading with Shaina." - Tanya J. King (Anthropology Professor. Melbourne, Australia)
“I have received guidance from Shaina Wexler for three years. I am a transgender guy and during my transition, spiritual awakening, and healing journey, her holistic guidance has been one of my favorite tools in my toolbox. Initially I was only going to her for vocal coaching, but her skills in healing breathwork and healing movements—along with her talents in channeling, divining, spiritual interpretation and insight—have all worked together in this beautiful way that has allowed me to unlock the self confidence, personal empowerment, and self knowledge I have needed in order for me to access my real voice.” - Devin Atticus (Tik-Tok Personality, Creative, Artist. San Francisco, CA, USA.)

Knocking on Nick's Door An interview (sort of) with Nicholas Cave
On The Street, February 1988
Interview by Rob Miller
Collected by Katherine B.
Saint and Sinner, Misogynist and Misanthropist... as famous in his own way as AC/DC or INXS (Australia's most well-known musical exports), Nick Cave is a bad boy of international proportions these days. Recognized as one of the major talents of the '80's in culturally elevated circles from London to Berlin and New York, there's no small irony in the fact that Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (or even The Birthday Party for that matter) are virtually unknown to the average music-listening Australian. And out of those that do acknowledge Cave in his own country, a fair proportion can't decide whether they love him for the brooding emotional soundscapes he and the Bad Seeds conjure or despise him for the blatantly arrogant attitude he displays to his listening public.
In equal parts misanthropic, exceptionally talented and wantonly self-destructive, it's also kind of unfortunate that the notoriety surrounding Nick Cave (which he does little to dispel), the tales of the man's narcotic over-indulgence and prima-donna arrogance have tended to overshadow the erratic brilliance of the Birthday Party/Bad Seeds career. Speaking for myself, a shameless fan since the early days of the Birthday Party, rarely have records been so eagerly awaited or as obsessively consumed as those by Nick Cave and his cronies. Yet in all that time I've never felt tempted to shoot up hard drugs just because that was part of the Nick Cave mythology. The price I've paid has been when my interest spilled over into curiosity to interview Cave, who's hardly the most receptive candidate for questions (which with the reputation is perhaps understandable).
Certainly when trying to separate the Man from the Myth, when you're second in a line of four phone interviews is a quest only for the foolhardy, especially when the questioning turns to the relationship between Cave's fabled decadence and his creativity...
"You're asking me if I take drugs?"
No, I'm not. I don't care particularly. I'm just interested in the what makes the records the wonderful experiences they usually are...
"Well, I guess I do. I don't know why you're looking for external factors. You're talking to the reason why those records are wonderful, I don't think that's got anything to do with drugs. I'm not on drugs at the moment, and as you can see, I'm still speaking with wit and intense as ever..."
Actually one gets the impression that these days Nick Cave would rather be known as a workaholic rather than for any other kind of obsessive behaviour.
"The last year I've been working my arse off," confides Nick. "It may not appear that way since no product has come out, but I'll reap the fruit this year. I've written a novel. I have two books coming out this year. I'm involved in a couple of films. Um, yeah, records and that shit."
Is music still a primary focus for you? Do you still consider yourself primarily a musician?
"I've never considered myself that way, but yeah, it's still very important to me. I've always felt that my areas of creativity were fairly open. But it's only in the past couple of years that I've actually had the chance to become involved in other things."
Long noted for his innate and formidable 'sense of the dramatic' by former Rich kid turned video producer Evan English, Nick cave has been based in Melbourne for the past few months where he'd been playing the part of Manyard in Ghosts (of the Civil Dead), a film about life in a high-tech maximum security prison. "I played a psychopath with a leaning towards self-destruction and shooting his mouth off," explains Nick. "It's about the authorities deliberately provoking a situation, where a series of violent events occur, so that the prison can be put under what's called lockdown, that's kind of twenty-four hours a day locked in the cells without any privileges or whatever. And there's that story plus the following of one particular character who goes into the prison a smalltime criminal and comes out a killer."
Along with Mick Harvey and Blixa Bargeld, Nick Cave will also be scoring the music for Ghosts, but is adamant that it will bear little resemblance to the Bad Seeds.
"The Ghosts film is the first I've done any music for. Apart from Wings of Desire, but that was only playing a couple of songs from our repertoire on stage. It wasn't actually doing music for the film as such. For Ghosts, I'm actually having to compose music to suit a certain type of atmosphere and so forth to kind of please the producer. And in that way it's kind of the first time I've had to do anything like that and it's quite a challenge. Usually I'm only pleasing myself..."
With songs like Knockin' on the Joe and Jack's Shadow (based on the story of Norman Mailer's friend Jack Henry Abbott, who wrote In the Belly of the Beast), Nick Cave has long been interested in the brutality and twisted emotions of the jail experience. Yet once again, attempts to prove Cave's seemingly fatal attraction towards these things merited an unenlightening response.
Have you mellowed over the years or are you still drawn to these sorts of things?
"I've written lots of prison songs... there's two or three prison songs on the next album"
Yet it seems prison is only one of the ways you've attempted to deal with various extremities of experience...
"The basic theme in my latest record are death, isolation and prison, basically the same things I've always been harping on about..."
What about sex and violence?
"Yeah, well, sex and violence of course. (Said with barely a trace of humour.) There's a good deal of sex and violence in it."
Is it still in the production stages?
"We've recorded quite a lot of songs for it, but we're still interested in recording more. Basically we want to make a better record than the last one even though I'm very happy with the last one. And I won't be really happy until I've done that."
Is Your Funeral... My Trial your favourite of the Bad Seeds records so far?
"Yeah..."
Although it is as yet untitled, Mick Harvey, who OTS spoke to last week (but that's another story!) is confident that the new album will be more than just a worthy successor to Your Funeral... My Trial. Incidentally, Cave will also be contributing to the soundtrack of Wim Wenders' next movie (Paris, Texas), who he met whilst living in Berlin and between whom there is apparently a mutual respect.
In fact, diversity - surprisingly enough for those whose perception of Cave would favour him as an apathetic, drug-ridden layabout junkie - has been one of the characteristics of his career in recent years even if it hasn't necessarily improved his sense of humour or sociability. From the well-received album of covers, Kicking Against the Pricks, to Cave's long-awaited novel And the Ass saw the Angel, from which an excerpt, Atra Vigaro or the Vargas Barking Spider appeared on the Smack my Crack compilation last year, Cave has doubtless in his own inimitable fashion been hard at work.
Is the novel to be published soon?
"Yeah, it's being typed up now. There's still a few more weeks work left to do on it, but it'll be out this year sometime. But the first book that'll come out will be a collection of other writing apart from the novel of lyrics and extra-curricular writings called King Ink. My publishers are actually compiling it but I think it'll have hand written pages and the odd doodle and that punctuating it. That'll coincide with the album, which will come out in a few months."
And what of Nick Cave's immediate plans? Does he intend to stay in Melbourne?
"Well, I'm just here for two months and then I'll go to Berlin, I think. We plan to do a fair bit of traveling this year. We've got our eye on visiting Brazil and Argentina. I'd quite like to stay there for a while."
A few years ago you said you'd like to go to Mexico and be a gas attendant for a while, and the suggestion was, get away from the pressure for a while. Is having a lot of preconceptions and expectations foisted on you what's ultimately a drag about being Nick Cave?
"Well, it keeps me on my toes, I guess. I've never managed to do that; to cut myself off from obligations is a near impossible thing. But yeah, there is a lot of pressure to fulfill a lot of contracts, but ultimately that sort of situation is one I work best in."
Do you still enjoy playing live? It seems to me that you've always had a fairly ambivalent attitude, almost take us as you find us...
"Yeah, sometimes, I've always had the attitude that I can't really give anymore than I can give and I always try to give as much as I can. Basically that's the way people will find us and the way they'll have to take us."
It seems like a very brief tour that you're doing this time, only half a dozen dates spread over ten days...
"It seems to me like a very long tour!"
Will you only do one date in Sydney?
"I don't know. Are we doing a date in Sydney?"
