With scifi/fantasy/similar genres, there’s a continuum from “this is About the constructed world; the characters are vehicles for exploring it” to “this is About the characters; the worldbuilding exists entirely in service of them,” and they’re both good and valid ways to tell stories! But they have different goals and different standards and if helps to figure out what a story’s priorities are so you aren’t critiquing it for failing at something it never set out to do in the first place.

Feeling Emotions about the kids still, but I think it's incredibly sweet that they don't really call each other "family". If they're talking about everyone as a big group, sometimes they use the word "family", but most often when talking about each other they say "friend"

Because it doesn't matter. "Family" doesn't indicate a better, stronger, or more important bond than "friend" to them. They love so many people and they love them all differently, but that doesn't make any one specific relationship more or less valid

I hate when someone dies and everyone makes it all serious and oh she was so sweet blah blah blah. Humor is important to me and my family so for me I'm like

I'm remembering my grandma by posting my favorite picture of myself, which she took. Me sitting in a beautiful place in nature looking fucking miserable. No hugs and kisses Grammy, just my grandmother with no patience for my bullshit. I mean. She could have been nicer to me but it's still pretty fucking funny.

And on my mom's Facebook page there was a picture of her at her favorite restaurant with comments like, "What a wonderful beautiful woman," and my mom's cousin steps in with, "Man was she a pain in the ass!" And she was! Great lady! Also kind of a bitch! Had a raunchy sense of humor and a bit of a potty mouth and ruthlessly called people out on their shit!

#instead of saying if the shoe fits she always said if the foo shits #she put her chocolate chip cookies in the freezer #she once got so mad at me that she threw a bowl of tuna at me #ope #she also took me on road trips during the summer and taught me how to paint and how to bird watch #like she wasn't a saint! #she did a lot for me and was a cool person but also! was a pain in the ass!!!!! #and that's great! #that's why the dementia was so hard i think #cause she was so sharp and it faded over the years #so i knew I'd never see my grandma again long before she died

Now that the quality of Duolingo has fallen (even more) due to AI and people are more willing to make the jump here are just some alternative apps and what languages they have:

Busuu (Languages: Spanish, Japanese, French, English, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Korean)

"I want a good audio-based app"

Language Transfer (Languages: French, Swahili, Italian, Greek, German, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, English for Spanish Speakers)

"I want a good audio-based app and money's no object"

Pimsleur (Literally so many languages)

Glossika (Also a lot of languages, but minority languages are free)

*anecdote: I borrowed my brother's Japanese Pimsleur CD as a kid and I still remember how to say the weather is nice over a decade later. You can find the CDs at libraries and "other" places I'm sure.
