OK WAIT SO
Gorgug took down Zara at the end of the episode and Brennan narrated: “she goes back to her resting place, wherever that is.”
Is. Are all the NPCs in this combat dead??? We know the previous episode ended with fucking Armageddon outside as the kids jumped into the briefcase. The episode ends before we can establish the state of the world outside the briefcase. Did we lose some people?!?!
Okay headcount ppl headcount:
Zayn? Already dead, no worries.
Baron? Not concerned.
Real Estate guy? Didn’t know him well but RIP big guy.
Zara the Warlock teacher? Ok now hold on…
JAWBONE?! IS JAWBONE…?!?!

Yes, I do want a side quest campaign a la The Seven featuring all the Bad Moms (including Cathilda Ceíli and Gorgug's Bio Mom, Roslyn "Roz" Fukumoto.) going on a quest to destroy the fucker that ruined Sandra Lynn's adventuring career and save the universe while they're at it.
Why? Because I wanna see a bunch of middle-aged women kick ass, be unhinged and deal with all the bullshit and trauma they have.

what absolutely breaks my heart about what sklonda said (even though i dont blame her at all btw) is that she truly doesn't know how much riz's friends gave up for him in the past, especially kristen, i mean she chose to cure him instead of herself in the nightmare forest! she chose to keep him safe even when she knew that the chance of her dying bc of that decision was so high
but
thats the thing about kristen that dooms her every single time isnt it? with tracker, with cassandra, with her friends. she has so much devotion for the people she loves, she would die for them in a heartbeat, but her love is so grand and most people aren't looking from a distance, you know? she would die for them but she wouldn't think to help them w homework or help them clean up their house or call them first or check up on someone she promised she will keep checking up on. her love is powerful and she is inherently kind, but no one sees it bc its not the type of love you can see day to day, so she often comes across as uncaring, and that breaks my heart.

So, I know people are really desperate for Sandra Lynn to have hooked up with Pamela Dawn instead of Bobby Dawn, and I completely understand that!* Bobby Dawn is slimy and awful and we don't know much about Pamela, so maybe she's better? But it is 100% Bobby Dawn for two very clear reasons:
Sklonda literally said it was him
Bobby Dawn has always been a predator
The first thing we learn about Sandra Lynn's affair during Spring Break Sophomore Year was that she had just left Aguefort (she dropped out her senior year and got a diploma later on) and she was very young. She was asked to join an established adventuring party of people who were older than her and that had lost one of its members. She fell in love with another member of the party that was already in a relationship, they had an affair, and then when the affair was discovered, Sandra Lynn was blamed, kicked out of the party, and her name was smeared as far and wide as possible by the person who had taken advantage of her so that person could absolve themselves, likely in the eyes of their partner and the party.
So what we can immediately deduce from this is that Sandra Lynn was an outsider to her new adventuring party, likely looked down on as "just a kid", maybe disdained for being a dropout, and most definitely resented for taking the place of the (presumably) dead party member. She was in actively dangerous and stressful situations while questing with the party and she probably had little support from the group during that time.
Sandra Lynn was very very vulnerable.
When he met Sandra Lynn, Bobby Dawn would have been about 20 years younger than he is now, likely in his late 30s/early 40s.** Probably still handsome, still a "dashing" active adventurer. He was married to Pamela already (not just in an established relationship), since he had a child by then that was close to grown and I don't think the Church of Sol would be very happy about a child out of wedlock. He would have been a cleric of Sol and probably still preaching "the good word of Sol" but it likely wouldn't have been constant. You can't give sermons while fighting monsters. I'm sure he even saved Sandra Lynn's life a few times!
The thing about Bobby Dawn being a televangelist now, but not then, is that when he was young, he was probably just as good at persuasion, at finding vulnerable people and exploiting their weaknesses to get what he wanted, and yet he hadn't made a name for himself as a televangelist, so people wouldn't know to be wary of him trying to convert or manipulate them.
The scene between Bobby and Kristen, when Kristen is pretending that Cassandra died shows exactly what kind of terrible person Bobby really is. He is happy to find Kristen devastated, that she is having "a real dark night of the soul" and needs guidance. He refuses to help Kristen stay at Aguefort (something that's within his power), despite knowing how beneficial that would be to her well-being, because that goes against his own goals. He is smug and condescending and cruel. He is preying on Kristen's devastation and vulnerability (not knowing it's an act), to draw her back into the fold of the Church of Helio/Sol.
The person who did that to Kristen, is the exact same person who took advantage of Sandra Lynn when she was still basically a kid, just out of high school. He took advantage of her feelings for him, her inexperience and isolation. And then, when they were discovered, he threw her away and made her the villain so he could get away with it.
He ruined Sandra Lynn's life. Yes, she's happy now with her daughter, her partner, and the beautiful home they've made at Mordred Manor with Adaine, Kristen, Lydia, Ragh, Tracker, Zayn, Aelwyn, Boggy, and 15 cats. But Sandra Lynn ended up with self-esteem and relationship issues that she is still dealing with to this day. Those issues ruined her marriage, could have ruined her relationship with Jawbone, and likely played a hand in the difficulties between her and Fig in Freshman Year, as Sandra Lynn saw her daughter take her first steps into the world of adventuring.
Because Sandra Lynn first wanted to be an adventurer and Bobby Dawn took that away from her, just like he tried to do to Kristen.
Bobby Dawn has shaped his career as a high priest of Sol and as a televangelist by portraying himself as the epitome of righteousness. He is rotten to the core, a predator in a job where he is meant to help people, and I CANNOT WAIT to see the Bad Kids take him down.
*I don't really understand it. Pamela Dawn is likely just as bad as Bobby. She's the chief paladin of the church of Sol, her husband is a televangelist and a High Priest of Sol, and she would have been around the same age as Bobby and having an affair with a vulnerable young girl who she then kicked out of the group and slandered. It being Pamela would still be awful!
**Even with the assumption that both Bobby Dawn and his child had their kids at a young age, the math still has to take into account that Sandra Lynn's daughter is the same age as Bobby Dawn's GRANDSON.

Thinking on it, it was probably really hard for Sklonda as a parent knowing her son was being bullied and not having control over how it was handled by his schools. So I dont blame her for being really defensive with Riz being called The Ball by his friends because of his past experiences.

genuinely can't stop thinking about the idea of riz taking fabian's rage token and damaging his relationship with his mom. because he's taking on more stress for his friends and we've seen that sklonda doesn't like that and like. riz loves his mom, obviously. he loves her very much! but he knows that his friends are trying now and i don't see it being an explosion, necessarily, but still an argument because they disagree on this.
and that aside, i think it makes a lot of sense just in general for riz to have disadvantage on checks against sklonda because sure, this is kind of the way their dynamic has been! but i also think that if riz ended up with a rage token, sklonda would probably be harder to convince of various things (deception/persuasion) and harder to read as well given how stressed riz is.
and honestly, i just think it'd be narratively fun and juicy

I'm sure I'm not the first one to think about this, but i don't care.
The absolute chaos of a full extended family dinner at mordred manor would be absolutely amazing.
I would be pay to see that shit happen. Like, even thinking about it for a few short minutes, you've got:
Sandra Lynn and her new partner Jawbone
Jawbones niece, Tracker (and possibly her new gf, Elven Princess whose name i cannot remember rn)
Fig Faeth, and her paramour Ayda Aguefort.
If going full extended family, Ayda's father and Fig's sorta father-in-law AND principal of the school Arthur Aguefort
Adaine, Jawbone's adopted kid AND her sister Aelwynn, both of whom KNOW the Elven Princess from their childhood
Kristen Applebees, sorta foster kid to Jawbone (and I guess Sandra lynn?)
Lydia and Ragh Barkrock
Now, of course Fig invites Gilear, who brings Halladriel and Fabian(and honestly, they would invate all the bad kids anyways)
Gortholax the ex-devil of the bottomless pit
Whatever happened to Gortholax and Sklonda, btw? Anyways, again, all bad kids are invited, so that would include Riz and Sklonda
And then ofcourse, the Thistlesprings AND Gorguk's bio parents.
Maybe Bill Seacaster can even temporarily portal in? I'm not sure what the rules are about spirits visiting the material plane?
And of course we can't forget Zayn Darkshadow, who lives at Mordred Manor
If it's during junior year, Agent Clark is 100% infiltrating, cuz these kids are suspicious
And then I'm not even thinking about any possible redemption/invitations towards Kristens siblings. Could you imagine?
Massive potluck, there's a bunch of awkward tension, a lot of bad jokes, and a fuckton of shenanigens

While I think Sklonda is right to be critical of the Bad Kids and specifically Kristen, I think that a lot of the reason she did so is that she was missing a lot of context the other parents were given. We see in Freshman Year that she’s often given the information about their quests from Riz, several hours after the fact, and he shares clues with her rather than personal things. He doesn’t think the personal bits are what she cares about because, for him, that’s not the problem being solved. He’s happy with his friends and she only really would hear if one of them caused a problem. Her apartment isn’t a hangout like Seacaster Manor, Mordred Manor, the Thistlespring Tree, or even Gilear’s season one apartment were. By the nature of her being a single working mother in a difficult financial situation, she often was left out of extracurricular activities.
For example, Mordred is obviously a place filled with a lot of activity, and plenty of kids to give updates on said activity if something slips through the cracks of someone’s retelling. If Adaine leaves out a personal moment because she’s focused on the case, Fig or Kristen or even Ragh could fill in that blank, plus the fact that the other BKs spend a lot of time there means that Sandralynn, Jawbone, and Lydia are usually getting every side of every story. The Thistlespring Tree is where the Bad Kids go not just because it’s a nice place to spend time, but because it’s often directly tied into a plot or subplot! The power source in season one, the satellite in season two, and Gorgug’s artificer journey + the whole Frosty Faire thing going on now! Besides that, the Thistlesprings have raised Gorgug in a way that encourages open channels of communication about his emotions above all else, so he tells them what’s going on! Fabian’s parents over at Seacaster Manor haven’t been involved so much this season, but Bill Seacaster saw their bond from the start and taught them how to take care of each other and fight as a group, and Gilear has always been heavily involved in their adventures because all of the BKs have been emotionally invested in him as well!
Aside from that, she’s missing the context of actually being able to attend their quests like some other parents/guardians were able to in Sophomore Year! Gilear and Cathilda and Sandralynn all know things like the fact that everyone was worried about Riz and called him their little angel when he was gone and that Kristen saved him almost at the expense of her own life in the Nightmare King’s forest. She never sees them together, the way they’ll risk everything for each other when the chips are down, the way they all show they care in little ways all the time ( like Fig giving him the card or Fabian’s gifts in Freshman Year). She doesn’t understand that while “the Ball” may have come from a bully on the first day of school, it turned into a term of endearment! She doesn’t see how hard they’ve been trying this year to pass their classes and such, not because it matters to them, but because they know it’s important to Riz. He never even explained the whole needing scholarships thing to them! He showed up with folders on the first day, stressed out of his mind about all of them passing together, and basically decided to get their shit together! Sure, it took Kristen and Fig a little while to do it, but that’s because they were struggling to build better habits!
I also understand how she could think Riz does all of the heavy lifting: when he presents the clues to her and he’s their lead investigator, do you think she assumed other people did the finding? Absolutely not! She doesn’t see the way they put things together by focusing on their individual strengths; she only sees Riz trying to put it all together and find the connections. Why would she know that a lot of the investigative work was done by Adaine and Kristen in sophomore year because so much of it had to do with religion? She wouldn’t!
All this to say: Sklonda is a good mom for checking in with Riz, but she also has a narrow view of things that no one else has. If she were to be exposed to the BKs more often and actually pay attention to how things work between them, I think she would be much more understanding.

also ik some ppl are not the most pleased abt some consistency things like sklonda already being a practicing lawyer but tbh 1) we have no idea how long it takes in brennan's made up fantasy world how long it takes to become a lawyer and 2) it's been several real life years. it's been months since sophomore year but in real life it's been like 4 years. go off i get it king it's not a big deal

I think something that I haven't seen talked about as much as just how important names are to this season, like yes Brennan very much has been going on and on about the names of God's but I've also noticed it in smaller moments like Sklonda not liking that Fabian calls her son "The Ball." There is also a heavy emphasis on family this season, families of course share last names. Notably Gilear's curse passed on to Fig, despite them not being related by blood, likely because she shared her name. Hell, even the very first encounter of the season, the Nightyorb gained HP whenever its name was spoken. I don't entirely know where this is going but it is a motif I have been noticing. It might be a bit that showed up independently of Brennan's intent but this theme even ended up coming through in everyone's refusal to refer to Kipperlily Copperkettle using her actual name, perhaps preventing her from gaining power in the inverse of what was happening with the Nightyorb, which would be a great parallel if she ends up being the final boss of this season.

Loved Sklonda in this latest episode of FHJY and it really shines a light on how parents can view the interpersonal relationships of teenagers.
Teens are so incredibly secretive, which is just natural at this stage of their development. They feel more grown up, more interested in making their own decisions and so want as little input as possible from their parents, even the ones with the exact experience that could help. It's the struggle of every parent to watch their kid grow and make mistakes and not ask for help all the time.
And because teens don't always share, a parent sometimes only has their own observations to work from. She sees Riz who has taken on so much, not just for himself, but for his friends and she doesn't see the other side of things.
Riz, who is terrified of not getting a scholarship that will pay for college despite his good grades. Who sees probably more than he lets on how Adaine struggles with the weight of being the Elven oracle and also broke and abandoned by her parents. He sees Gorgug struggling with his rage and his place in the world. He sees Fabian's loneliness and his desire to look strong & put together. How Fig really cares and is trying so hard but has no idea how to go about it in a healthy way. And Kristen. Oh he sees how Kristen is spiraling and trying to put herself back together and trying to come to terms with her faith. He sees how she is grasping at anything for purpose and how grateful she is about his support.
And I think, even if he doesn't see it clearly, he knows they want to help. It shows up in the way they just started taking their classes seriously. I know that Fabian was inviting Riz and everyone over to Lofi Study Night to at least make him comfortable. Adaine is definitely worrying over Riz, even if she doesn't know what to do and is going through her own stuff. And Fig sending that card to Riz? Ok, she signed it as Gorgug, but it's the acknowledgment that he needed to know he was being seen. And the reaction to the card being one of such immense gratitude and sentimentality towards Gorgug, that rather than correct the situation and find out who actually sent the card, Gorgug saw how much his friend needed care and gave him a gift to go along with it. Because he may not have sent the card, but dangit it's a good idea!
I see a group of friends who love each other deeply and want to be there for each other, but don't know how to get around what life is throwing at them to do it.
And Sklonda has literally no way of knowing any of this. She is working so hard and probably dealing with her own guilt of not being able to be there for him as much as she would like and all she is seeing is the aftermath of the Bad Kids, not what they are actually doing. While I'm sure she does care about them, her priority is her son and she sees how he struggles and in the face of not knowing what the solution could be, she instead tries to loosen his grasp on the stress he's taking on for them. Because she worries he's becoming a people pleaser and won't get anything back for it.
It's a beautiful miscommunication that I don't know will (or should) get resolved. Because your first hardcore group of friends, the ones you would die for, is so important. And one day, she will either see how much they did for each other, or she won't, but what matters is the love. They love him, he loves them and his mom and would do whatever it took to make them happy and that is special.
