Chicago Rodent Control: How to Safeguard Your Property from Infestation
The Windy City’s Wild Pest Problem: Safeguarding Your Chicago Property from Rodents
Chicago is sadly no stranger to rodent infestations. Our sprawling metro with its huge sewer systems, garbage dumps, riverside restaurants and dense housing - makes for a veritable rat paradise. Residential buildings, shops and warehouses face chronic rodent problems across neighborhoods; with complaints rising sharply since 2020.
Let’s understand why Chicago is so infestation-prone, how we are affected and most importantly - what countermeasures property owners can undertake for preventing rat/mice activity inside our homes and buildings.
Decoding Chicago’s Pest Control Woes
From a rodent perspective, our city offers unlimited food waste, Benedictine water supply through sewer system and Lake Michigan alongside ample harborage options in buildings, yards and parks. Milder winters nowadays allow year-round breeding as litters need warmer temperatures. Climate change impacts like extreme heat/cold, heavy rainfall are also shrinking natural rodent habitats - driving them indoors for shelter.
Additionally, Construction boom has disrupted underground burrows while growing outdoor dining culture and improper trash storage in neighborhoods, alleys provides free meals encouraging infestations to spill over into adjoining properties.
So a combination of conducive environment, weather volatility and urban dynamics is responsible for Chicago’s uncontrolled rat populations beyond sanitation capacity - reflected in increased citizen complaints.
How Rodents Affect Us
Living or working in rodent-infested properties directly threatens -
Health & Safety: Rats can transmit dangerous diseases like Leptospirosis. Mouse allergens also trigger asthma. Rodent bites cause wound infections. Electrical fires or outages can occur from damaged wires. Burrowed yards, walls risk injury/falls.
Property Value: Infestations decrease real estate value due to unsanitary conditions. Prospective tenants/buyers get turned off by rodent issues. Banks deny loans on affected properties.
Business Revenue: Shops/restaurants with rodent presence face legal actions, fines or closures over health code violations - causing severe financial setbacks. Loss of customer base too over public image concerns.
Clearly, we must take responsibility to ensure our homes, offices, shops do not attract rodents and proactively prevent infestations - rather than suffer the damages later.
Fortifying Your Chicago Property against Rodents
While completely rodent control chicago-proofing buildings in Chicago is impossible, we can surely barricade entry points and deny rodents food, water and nesting grounds to every extent possible. Here are 7 ways to fortify your property.
Inspect Premises
Check all corners inside and perimeter outside for entry or exit holes. Seek gaps in walls, gnaw marks on wood. Identify potential nesting spots. Track activity signs like droppings, greasy smudges. This reveals vulnerabilities needing resolution.
Block Entryways Seal all crevices, holes with concrete/steel wool. Install weather strips below doors with adequate sweep. Mesh wire on vents blocks access via ducts. Maintain window screens. Perimeter fencing with concrete footing obstructs ground entry.
Manage Food Sources Store food grains, pet supplies in chew-proof containers. Frequently clear crumbs, leftovers and clean oily deposits. Never leave edibles uncovered. Fix dripping taps and seal open drink containers. Manage dumpsters properly with tight lids. Discourage outdoor feeding of birds/strays.
Limit Harborage
Declutter garden areas, storage spaces and basements by removing debris piles where rats nest. Structural changes like boxed-in pipes, raised stacks, woodpiles also deny harborage. Reduce ground vegetation and trim overgrown branches.
Stop Plumbing Access Seal pipe openings with copper mesh, perforated aluminium sleeves. Secure floor and sink drains with weighted traps preventing sewer entry. Waterless trap seals in lesser used outlets preserve barrier. Always maintain water seals.
Seek Professional Help If despite proactive measures, an infestation begins - immediately contact certified pest control agencies for inspection and dedicated extermination services involving trappings, baits, fumigation and proofing reinforcements. They can also advise on permanent rodent-deterrent fixtures.
Community Participation Liaise with neighbors, associations and local authorities to collectively address area-wide rodent issues like burrows in vacant lots, debris near construction sites etc. Unity bolsters prevention capacity.
Adopting these building fortification measures with infection control essentials like disinfections and monitoring can help Chicago residents protect our most valuable asset - our homes & properties. Staying vigilant and working together as a community is key to safeguarding the Windy City from its wild pest problems in the long run!

RED-VELVET, GUTS, WHORE.
Lights, Camera, Acción. Winter dusk’s constellations whistled transcendent dreams, bathed in the ethereal glow of aurora’s luminescence. Airy bittersweet radiant amidst melodrama in the air. Ensnared by the meaning of slumber, I existed in-between a haze cognizant disruption and somnolent reverie. Awakened by the silence, burdened by the aphasic blare of the alarm's siren. Still I lay, halfway slanted over my body draped on the pearly-white and ivory golden rounded couch in despair. Languishing, unfathomed by the remnants from the night prior. A hangover grippingly lingers, seeping within and regret chokes me tight.
An aluminium can of Coca-Cola Cherry descends in echoes cluttering spillage on the white marble floor, as the scent of cigarette musk lingers in the atmosphere. Cursing breaths elicit underneath my throat and between faded red-stained lips. Wrapped in light's embrace, I’d wander through the resplendent marble vestibule interior of my apartment and enter its marbled white duluxe bathroom abiding inside the steamy mist.
Moments within time passed by hastily. The water droplets that were cascading down my freshen skin and glistening diamonds were now dry. My platinum tresses blew out and straightened to perfection. With a glimpse of anticipation, I begin to apply skincare products on my adorning bare facade with the right amount of elixir. The serums and creams melt seamlessly, enhancing my features. I glowed, dewy like a glazed doughnut and metamorphosed the art besotted flawlessness. A reflection initiates an art canvas amongst finger painting various colors to create an illusion of beauty, soft pads of my fingers blend in Les Beiges foundation by Chanel, my perception of art would be naturals, delicately blending in to embrace color. Then, I conceal without a brush, it'll look natural and any imperfections underneath the eyes will magically disappear using The Chanel Radiance Concealer as a little goes along the way. I add another touch of a blush, reaching for the N°1 de Chanel lip and cheek balm, a little dab here and there would suffice a bit of warmth.
Then, I use a brush to delicately dance, each stroke creates a symphony of shades and hues as I lace together artistry and self-expression.
I enhance my dewy glow, defining my features. Chanel's Les Beiges bronzer sculpts my sharp cheekbones. For my eyelids, I use the luxurious Ombre Premier cream eyeshadow, and for my perfectly shaped brows, I reach for Chanel's Le Gel Sourcils. A few strokes to shape and define my fuller brows. And at last, by accomplishing the look, I apply the Noir Allure mascara for voluminous lashes. Since my lashes are naturally long and I don't wear falsies, it makes other models presume they have feathers for eyes. With the Chanel Nude Brun lip pencil I trace the shape of my cupid's bow, filling in the corners. And a glossed layer for a mesmerizing finish.
Passing through an elevator exit, alabastrine glow painted air illumination, heavenly renaissance interior upon the ceilings reconcile with a gaze before relinquishing for day. Bypassing the doorman who greets residents “Good Morning,” I feel a breeze of winter air wandering along the sidewalk around a nearest corner and a further pathway I spotted Au Cœur Couronné nestled upper-right in the corner, it’s sign in the shape of a reddened heart underneath a golden crown pendant embedded on peal-white cobblestone wall, arched windows and the doors infinitely ajar. Au Cœur Couronné beckons me inside without a second thought, saccharine pastry collides with the robust aroma of delicate brewed coffee and Chocolat Chaud. I preferred this place amongst other coffeehouses. The interior full of historical art statues, paintings attached upon carmine walls and golden panels ignite French architecture and monochrome checkerboard floors. Au Cœur Couronné's cake exhibit varied its delicacy with marbled macarons of scarlet cherry, pearly-white, and speckling gold leafs. Éclairs. Cupcakes of carmine served with velvety white chocolate frosting and on top a glint of glitter, on the far left array’s cherry and raspberry torté, blackberry red wine chocolate gourmet and decadent strawberry tarts. A burst of redness captivating the art of passion and desire, but lastly among it all was the heart shaped red-velvet cake embroidered in its velvety texture, tiny hearts and rich palate. Adrifting, I withheld from the cake stand, making a note to order one for Friday. My attention temptingly drawn to the savoury salads. I was enticed, gazing for no more than three seconds. Salade de fraises, épinards et laitue. I've been in this position before. But an error suffices, an allergy to strawberries. I loathe food as much as I'd yearned for it. A prying urge to endorse pain, satisfaction had won as my intrusive thoughts consumed the very best of me. Upon reaching the plastic transparent box and pomegranate dressing resting on top, I rested it on the counter as the barista behind greeted me with a warming welcome.
“Morning, what can I get for you today?”
Through the reflection of noir sunglasses, he is unaware that I am gazing while he harbours a smile with his ocean blue eyes, exhausted with genuine curiosity. I paused momentarily to ponder what I'd been craving for.
“A regular on the go will do. Make it 170 degrees, but don't burn the foam and no sugar.”
As he gestures towards the coffee machine, brewing a fresh pot with steam flowing and the aroma of fresh beans filling our senses. I wander off to claim my seat by an arched window, seeking a more subdued light. Craving for grandiose between my lips, I search for the heart-shaped Vivienne Westwood lighter and ignite a grandiose cigarette. The smoke swirls around me in a wistful dance. Coffee is served and I ask for the card machine, paying for the things I purchased.
Ashes burned in-between a few sips of brew and smoke. I'd take a break from intoxicants to inhale crisp, cold draft, then exhale. Amidst all tranquil, my own thoughts soon conspired upon me. They crept in and whispered as temptation overbared the bylaws of my consequences. I'd soon disremember about my allergic susceptible affect, the indulgence of pain this would bring. Embracing determination to my senses, it became apparent that I disregard haunting thoughts and savour Salade de fraises, épinards et laitue.
Lights, Camera, Acción. Strut on the runway, evade from jogging, running, or waving. Let your countenance remain stoic, and prevent smiles. Embrace the power of a resting bitch face. Stay focused and exude expressionism of the higher ground. At the Chateau Hall rhythmic melodies reverate, stroboscopic light and camera flare beaming within the distance. The upcoming fashion extravaganza, a spectacle of sartorial brilliance drew nearer with each passing day, casting a shimmering aura of anticipation upon our hearts. The runaway stage design was noir, monochromic, capturing attention with bold elements. Mirror pillars would reflect the stage and the centrepiece persists with an open wide mouth, symbolising the presence and nature of the fashion world. It almost looks surreal with a touch of mystery behind it, but overall its aesthetic would be an unforgettable runway experience. Models would walk in as others would exit out. I was supposed to be up there myself, but being already late, I'd face consequences. Leaning upon the door frame, gazes of the cosmos never faltered as colleagues who participated exulted the platform.
‘’Oh, look who decided to show up. Tardy Barbie thinks she's too prestigious for punctuality. Iris won't be thrilled, that's for sure. Guess nobody asked for your fashionably late entrance.’’ Ugh.. Ava’s voice is unbearable like chipped manicured nails on a chalkboard. I find it insufferable when I take a deep breath, the calmness I once abide shattered into pieces, and my body tenses up in utter cringe. Enduring in silence.
‘’Fuck off, Ava.’’
In cold response, still gazing at the stage of catwalks and visuals. A flamed light ignites Gauloises attempting to search calming waters.
“No, I'm going to stay here and watch you get in trouble. Iris should be here any second now.’’
“Aw, like the time you had wandered in and saw your fiancé's cock down my throat, or the time he and I fucked in the bathroom at your wedding? God, he hated you.”
‘’You are such a cold-hearted /bitch/,’ I can hear her voice triggering in a wearing tone.
‘’And you’re a cunt. Maybe deep throat better and you’ll eventually keep someone.’’
I flicked the burning cigarette in her direction, walking in another. She tugs on my arm, her face glowing red but I divert by shoving past her side. Things were still intense between me and Ava, her attempts to taunt me and dredging up past indiscretions perceived as nonchalant. Faces turn at the small commotion across the entrance exit Ava follows like a lost puppy still raging on about the great mistakes I made. Dwelling in the past is far long and exhausting. We were never friends, not even close. In an inconvenient time, while I am still being provoked Iris walks down the hall, folders in hand, and her facade burning red. There is steam almost eliciting out of her ears. I knew Ava would get into shit for causing a scene with her intricate interplay. I watched as Iris dismissed Ava further away from me, disdaining the havoc behind, then turning to me with a stern faded glare. She inquired about my whereabouts. And I explain, though Iris seemingly visibly upset in her frustration with everything else.
“You can't just show up when you want to, otherwise, nothing will work out. I think we'll have to sit you out on this one.” Iris assigns me the task of designing for Alina, lacing her words with a subtle threat of consequences for being late again.
“And Carmilla, if you ever show up late again, I will fire you. That's a final warning.”
Alina Xialing abides in high fashion, soaring elegance at the zenith of 6.5. She is attired in delicate lingerie, and her confidence scaled the rooftops, alluring the ethereal glowing atmosphere. It reflects on her soft, glowing skin. We both have diverse aesthetics but identical concepts for every design, as if it were the art of fate drawing us together. She informs me that my work is immaculate, admiring the designs almost warmed up my icy cold heart and would be honoured to wear every piece. Upon the attire fitted on her slender figure is a translucent skin mesh top laced with Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” in noir infinite artwork. Her skirt is shortened to her slender thighs, and she wears high-knee heels creating a stunning visualisation. The tattoo on her right arm adds an edgy glimpse to her final ply of artistic expressions. I perceive as if I’d near despise her.
On the runway an array of girls find solace in intoxicated elixirs for confidence and courage, others imbibe for ketamine and a variety while the majority use the pleasure in any substances they can get their hands on. They’re driven by famine and insatiable hunger exhilarated by their own experience, it's no wonder they seem halfway through their demise.  I stood on the top floor, leaning over the balcony, I couldn't help but observe the disastrous scene unfolding on the runway. The model, seemingly under the influence, stumbled along the path, her eyes drawn to something beyond the gleaming, flashing lights. It was as if she had taken more than enough substance to charge past her limits. Beside me stood Iris and her boyfriend, engaged in a conversation laced with flirtatious undertones. He shamelessly tried to win her over, while Iris, seemingly tipsy and lightweight, laughed uncontrollably. Just like the model, she stumbled like an idiot, and my eyes widened in shock as I heard something crack, I almost dropped the burning Gauloises. The entire place seemed to synchronise its gasps, stifled laughter, and the model's face was now full of blood, dripping onto the floor. To my surprise, Iris rejected her boyfriend's advances, adding another unexpected twist to the chaotic scene rushing past to aid the falling model’s side.
‘’You’re staring.’’
I hear a deep, stoic voice say in one ear.
‘’What?’’ Caught off guard, I respond.
‘’I said, you’re staring.’’ Repeating his words. He takes the half-burned cigarette and settles it in-between his lips. I can’t believe my eyes won't tear away from his intense gaze. It’s consuming me.
‘’Way too much.’’
He reminded me so much of…
‘’I was gazing.’’ Sternly, I managed to say.
‘’And?’’ He challenges.
‘’Why are you with Iris? She’s out of your league.’’
‘’I keep some women for entertainment purposes.’’ He shrugs in response, a smirk forming upon his lips.
‘’You’re disgusting.” I whisper, secretly intrigued by this. Half-smiling. We both step closer, feeling the tension build around us. I reach into my pocket and hand him a slip of paper with my apartment number written in red. I slip it into his white, golden, and silver ringed palm. As my eyes wander away from Iris' boyfriend, I notice the untouched bottles of champagne on the table. I end up taking one with me as I head back home.
Back at the apartment, I sit, indulging in a delicious tub of ice cream. The bottle of champagne is almost half empty, and I can't help but get swept away by the scenery, glamour, and drama of Gossip Girl. I admire the art of Blair Waldorf her epitome of ambition and determination, always striving at the top, and a little like Serena, effortless with beauty and a free-spirited nature. The one who has it all. But just as the show on the screen reaches its peak, there's an interruption at my door. I get up from the pearly-white and ivory-golden rounded couch, dragging both feet on the white-marbled floor. The timing couldn't be worse. I'm caught off guard, trying to find the right words to navigate this unexpected encounter.
He would only want one favour from me with his heartless demeanour, add it with a few lines of ketamine and coke and we’re both all over the place. It's a moment of confusion, conflicting emotions, and the lingering question of whether I should let my ex-boyfriend inside.
And I do, surrendering into his embrace. The door closes.

#JusticeForGrenfell💚
I haven’t seen much noise about this on tumblr and because it’s a topic that is very close to my heart, I thought I would write my own thing...
Today (14th June 2020) is the three year anniversary of the Grenfell Tower Fire. In the early hours of 14th June 2017, a fire broke out in a 24-storey tower block in Kensington, West London. The fire quickly spread, engulfing the entire building. The tragedy resulted in 72 recorded deaths, and more than 200 people were left homeless. It was 100% avoidable, and the fire was a direct result of funding cuts and cutting corners and finding loopholes to avoid adhering to fire safety legislation. News outlets across the country described this as a tragedy. It was not a tragedy, it was a travesty. Mass murder by any other name.
The Grenfell Tower Fire was one of the most visceral visual manifestations of racial and socioeconomic injustice in modern memory. I’m going to include a brief history/explanation as to why and how, but I am by no means an expert so I encourage you to read about this further.
Grenfell Tower was in the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, but was managed by the Kensington & Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation. In 2015-16, Grenfell Tower was significantly ‘redeveloped.’ as part of a £10million refurbishment project in partnership with Rydon and other contractors, which was part of a £57m neighbourhood regeneration scheme. As a part of the redevelopment programme, the building was installed with new windows, cladding, and thermal insulation. As part of this, new aluminium composite rainscreen cladding was introduced, of which two types were used: Reynobond PE and Reynolux aluminium sheets. The changing of the cladding was mainly to ensure ‘that the character and appearance of the area are preserved and living conditions of those living near the development suitably protected.’ - in other words, fire safety was compromised to make the building more aesthetically pleasing to the wider (note: wealthier) community in K&C. The company doing the cladding, Arconic, knew that it was unsuitable for high rise buildings over 10m (Grenfell was 63m tall). The new FLAMMABLE RS5000 insulation, produced by Saint-Gobain, failed several fire safety tests and was generally deemed unsafe for high rise buildings. The combination of flammable insulation and cladding caused a fire that should have been compartmentalised to one flat to engulf the whole building. The residents were subject to a ‘stay put’ policy that meant the majority of them were left unable to escape. I have highlighted the companies that are complicit in this corporate murder in bold here, because I believe their names should not be forgotten and they need to be heard so they can be held to account.
The building had no central fire alarm, no proper fire exits/fire-safe doors, no sprinkler system, no evacuation plan. It failed fire safety checks. Grenfell Tower’s infrastructure was illegal.  The area had also suffered cuts to the fire brigade under Boris Johnson, who was at that time Mayor of London.
In January 2016,  the Labour Party tried to introduce a bill that would require all rented housing to be ‘safe for human habitation’, and would have given residents of accommodation like Grenfell Tower the power to sue their landlords for breach of contract. It was voted down by 72 Conservative politicians, who at this stage has a majority in Parliament. They voted it down because they were landlords themselves deriving income from property. Landlord MPs can affect all decisions to do with housing legislation as long as they declare their interests, and they had a financial interest in the rented sector that led them to vote down secure safety protections.
The Grenfell Action Group raised concerns about fire safety in the building for years prior to the fire. In a blog post dated 20th November 2016, about 6 months before the tragedy, the Grenfell Action Group warned that “It is a truly terrifying thought but the Grenfell Action Group firmly believe that only a catastrophic event will expose the ineptitude and incompetence of our landlord, the KCTMO, and bring an end to the dangerous living conditions and neglect of health and safety legislation that they inflict upon their tenants and leaseholders.’ ‘The Grenfell Action Group predict that it won’t be long before the words of this blog come back to haunt the KCTMO management and we will do everything in our power to ensure that those in authority know how long and how appallingly our landlord has ignored their responsibility to ensure the health and safety of their tenants and leaseholders. They can’t say that they haven’t been warned!’ [emphasis added]. The government’s own equalities watchdog found that the management of the tower breached their rights to life and adequate housing of the residents, as well as many human rights inquiries since.
The Grenfell Tower tragedy is inextricably tied with race and class. This was a council estate, which meant it was occupied primarily by working class people, the majority of them council tenants, Muslims, immigrants, and refugees. Grenfell tower stood in the most deprived area of the wealthiest borough of London: it was a stark, brutalist block surrounded by cushy mansions and estates. Furthermore, the process of concentrating processes of urban “regeneration” and gentrification is a wider symptom of the privatisation of social housing, and is trauma from neoliberalism. I could go on forever about how political history and gentrification and the ways in which this ultimately led to disaster, but I’ve already gone on for too long so long story short: this was an entirely avoidable tragedy that is a culmination of racist and classist policies, where profit for the companies and aesthetics for the affluent upper class neighbourhood was prioritized over the lives of members of one of the most deprived communities in the UK.
Today, not much has been done by way of justice. Although the ‘safe for human habitation’ bill was passed post-Grenfell, it only applies to new buildings. Current households with unsafe flammable cladding, of which there are approximately 24,000, are not required to be retrospectively made safe. The government has missed the target of June 2020 to get rid of flammable cladding. Some 246 buildings still have Aluminium Composite Material installed. The public inquiry into the fire has been put on hold because of the pandemic. It has already revealed that companies such as Arconic, Saint-Gobain etc. knew that their materials were unsuitable for Grenfell Tower, but the council went ahead with the regeneration project anyway to save some money.  Survivors of the fire say nothing has changed. The survivors of Grenfell Tower are yet to be offered permanent housing and were even threatened with being branded as ‘intentionally homeless’ if they refused significant relocation outside of London.
Please do not forget about Grenfell Tower. Do not let corporate greed and murder go unforgotten. This was one of the starkest illustrations of racial inequality and poverty and our lifetimes, and we must keep fighting for justice. The poor and the weak should not be cooped up in these unsafe buildings as lambs for the slaughter.
Please please email your MP and demand that the inquiry is continued and that the findings are widely publicized and lead to proper policy change implementing proper regulation of these criminal regeneration projects. Pressure your MPs to push for funding to be reallocated to these deprived communities. Please keep fighting for the Grenfell residents who are dealing with the trauma of losing their loved ones and gross incompetence by their council and potential permanent homelessness all at once.
Please follow Grenfell United, an organisation made up of survivors and bereaved members of the community and sign up to their newsletter for ways you can actively get involved. Please also consider donating to the Grenfell Foundation. Most of all, please do not allow Grenfell to leave the public consciousness. Don’t allow these to be covered up. Keep talking about it, please keep fighting for it. Love and solidarity 💚  #justiceforgrenfell

PHOTOLUMINESCENT POWDER INTRODUCTION
Photoluminescent powder, also known as pigment, is a non-toxic, non-radioactive new environmentally friendly alkaline earth aluminate pigment. Most of the visible or UV light will charge the pigment particles (excitation). The photo luminescent pigment then releases energy for 10 to 24 hours in the form of visible light (which glows in the dark). The photographic light-emitting pigments provide duty-cycle operation with a very high ratio of glow time to the desired charging time. Luminous intensity (brightness) and afterglow time than the traditional ZnS (zinc sulfide) or usually sold retail store products more than 30 times higher.
Photoluminescent Powder Characteristics
Safe for normal uses as it contains no radioactive or toxic materials.
Long glow time. Compared with previous photo storage materials, it has up to 50 times longer emission (glow) time.
High initial brilliance. Initial luminance of up to 40,000 mcd/m2.
High durability. Long shelf life if the crystalline structure is not damaged.
Outdoor usage. Suitable for outdoor usage as it does not suffer luminance reduction even when placed under a 300-watt high-pressure mercury lamp for 1000 hours.
Stable Chemical Reaction. Not-encapsulated powder is stable as it is resistant to most anhydrous chemicals, both organic and inorganic. However, it will decompose into metal oxide and lose its luminance when brought into contact with water. Waterproof powder should be used for high water content mediums such as kids water paint. Most resin, epoxy, silicone and acrylic paints can be used with our not-encapsulated pigment and brighter pigment.
Temperature Resistance:
High Temperatures. The performance and brilliance remain stable under temperature of nearly 1100 degrees Fahrenheit (600℃).
No decrease in performance even when tested at temperatures of -40 degrees Fahrenheit (-40℃). High durability.
How bright are these glow products?
Many photoluminescent pigments and products manufacturers refer to the extinction time of their products, which is defined as the time required for afterglow to be reduced to 1 masb (0.032 mcd / m2, or about 100 times the human perception limit). In practice, it is very difficult, unless your eyes are completely dark to adapt, and you are in a completely dark environment. For practical purposes, the brightness of one to two millimeters per square meter is a more appropriate limit for life safety applications, even if a smoke-free environment is assumed. Therefore, the zinc sulfide product may take 30 to 45 minutes after its excitation source is extinguished. On the other hand, the afterglow of strontium aluminate products can be seen for days or even longer. All PhotoLuminescent Powder are based on strontium aluminate. At the other end of the time scale, strontium aluminate products can provide surprising initial afterglow. For example, four inches of square material from the magazine page can provide enough light, at least in the first minute. In addition, the microprism retroreflector and other brightness enhancement techniques can increase the brightness of the material several times.
Are Photoluminescent Exit and Egress Signs OSHA Compliant?
Most people can figure out how to exit a building in normal circumstances. But add fear and an emergency, and normal tasks suddenly become difficult. Darkness after losing power and a fire’s smoke make everything worse. This is why it’s so essential to make egress—the act of escaping a building—simple and easy. And glow in the dark exit signs that are approved by OSHA are one way of lighting the way to safety.
In this article, we look at the requirements from OSHA, NFPA, and the IBC for the listing and performance of photoluminescent signs. These mandates include the need for proper light sources, glow duration, and legibility from a distance.
Feel free to skip to the sections on:
The basics of photoluminescent exit signs and egress markers
Listing requirements from IBC, NFPA 101, and others for photoluminescent signs
Are photoluminescent signs OSHA-compliant?
Installing, inspecting, and testing photoluminescent safety signs
The basics of photoluminescent exit signs and egress markers
Effective means of egress are described and regulated by multiple model building and safety codes. The National Fire Protection Association’s NFPA 101: Life Safety Code (2018 edition) is one key document. Another is the International Building Code (IBC, 2018 edition), which has been incorporated into the building codes of every U.S. state.
Proper signage is a key part of emergency preparedness, which is why you see light-up “EXIT” signs everywhere. Smaller egress markers, which often have arrows indicating direction and pictographs of a running man, are also common. These give directions in confusing parts of a building or where exit signs are far apart. All signs have to work well in the dark and without main power, so NFPA 101 and IBC both have specific requirements for backup illumination.
Photoluminescent signs (aka “glow-in-the-dark signs”) are a useful technology for exit and egress signage. They glow without a dedicated power source. Instead, they absorb the energy of light from normally well-lit surroundings—often a particular wavelength of light—and release it over time as a glow. The brightness of their glow diminishes after the charging light source is removed, but glow in the dark signs that are NFPA-, IBC-, and OSHA-compliant remain visible long enough to get people to safety.
Photoluminescent signs can be used as egress markers and exit signs as long as they meet the necessary performance standards. Indeed, many egress markers (being smaller and more common than exit signs) must be self-luminescent—electric illumination won’t do.
PVC Signage
Let’s be clear and as non-technical as possible in the description of PVC signs. The chemicals and the molecular makeup are the same as the pipe referred to in the opening of this article. The best way to help in differentiating the two as that the signs are more lightweight and porous, meaning full of pores. How does this translate to what you want to know? With all those tiny little pores in a PVC sign, it means it will accept liquids. In your case, it means they can accept ink, and thus we can create graphics on the sign you want for your company.
PVC signs have a matte finish, which means it eliminates glare or reflection. It makes your graphics easier to read. If you really feel you want a shinier gloss finish, we can do a decal print and affix it to your sign.
Brushed aluminium signs
If you’re looking for long-lasting outdoor signs, brushed aluminium material may be just what you need. They’re strong but lightweight and are quite durable. They can be cut to any shape or size and is quite popular due to their resistance to bending and water. What’s more, brushed aluminium signed to give your designs a stunning silver metallic finish.
This type of material is great for both indoor and outdoor advertisements, as well as decorative pieces. It is often the preferred option for wayfinding signs, making them perfect for offices, waiting rooms, or reception areas.
Painted aluminium signs
These are the same as brushed aluminium signs, except they have a smooth, painted finish. These are made from two synthetic plates with a hard di-bond door. They are extremely sturdy, yet surprisingly lightweight.
We suggest using this material when designing a panel for a sale or special offer. Just like brushed aluminium, this material is water-resistant and difficult to bend. This makes it perfect for outdoor promotion.
When you’re designing a custom interior sign, you have several options for materials, including plastic, wood, glass, and a handful of metals. Ideally, you’ll choose a material that best reflects your brand or the message of your sign. If that material is stainless steel, you’re in luck. Stainless steel signs signal strength and industriousness to your clients. If your business is about offering protection, stability, or innovation, stainless steel can help communicate that to customers. Plus, it offers five other excellent advantages we’ll detail below.
1. Eye-Catching Shine
Stainless steel is a highly reflective metal that gives off a pleasant shine. It helps catch people’s attention, especially when it is also the focal point of a room, as a lobby sign or other custom interior sign should be. If you use stainless steel for an outdoor sign, a sunny day will charmingly light it up.
2. Longevity
As stainless steel is rust and corrosion resistant you can use it for both outdoor and indoor signs. You can expect a long life out of these signs, as long as you occasionally maintain them. When you need to invest in a permanent sign that will broadcast your brand for the long-haul, choose stainless steel.
3. Cost-Effective Metal
Stainless steel is quite cost effective as a sign material, especially as compared to other metals. Bronze, gold and copper, or fake versions of these metals, can be more expensive. With a stainless steel sign, you get the benefits of metal without the disadvantages.
4. Completely Customizable
Many custom indoor signs need to be just that, very custom. If you’re thinking of an unusual shape, unique font or another uncommon design choice, stainless steel can be manufactured to fit your unique vision exactly.
5. Just Add a Bit of Steel
You don’t need to make a whole sign out of stainless steel. This material is a “neutral” that can be combined with several other materials to great effect. Consider adding stainless steel lettering on a plastic sign or combining wood and stainless steel for an industrial look. There are many other possible combinations that can work for your brand.

AESTHETIC
Acrylic signs are eye-catching yet subtle and tasteful. They are ideal for companies who are looking to add signage to their office which is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. It’s even possible to “float” the letters of the sign to create an attractive 3D effect.
DURABILITY
One practical reason why many people use acrylic signs is that they are very durable and need little maintenance. They can withstand any weather condition including snow, rain, hail high winds and temperatures.
CUSTOMIZABLE
Although an acrylic sign includes a relatively simple and straightforward design, there is still room for a high level of customization. The plate itself can be frosted, clear or even a solid colour. The design can include a simple name in a wide range of colours, or even logo designs.
BRANDING
Acrylic signs offer an excellent opportunity to improve the branding and brand visibility of your company. Acrylic signs allow for simplicity, which means you are free to use whichever typography or imagery necessary to communicate your brand.
PROFESSIONAL
We offer a variety of different signage solutions, but when it comes to combining visibility and professionalism, acrylic signs are the best solution and reflect the class of your company. Most signage is appropriate for B2C, but acrylic signage is primarily for B2B companies.
ACRYLIC SIGNS AT WARWICK SIGNS
At Warwick Signs we offer competitively-priced and professional acrylic signs.
What is Resin Stone?
Resin stones are made by taking shards of stone, binding them with a strong adhesive and molding them in with a special resin. The resulting mixture is then capped with acrylic or other coatings to ensure that the surface and core is protected and scratch resistant. And, because it is made from resin, the material is much lighter than normal stone without losing it’s durability.
What common items are made from Resin Stone?
Stone resin can be formed to make a number of common home items such as tile for flooring, bathtubs, sinks, showers, garden stones and even some jewelry as well.
What are the benefits of Resin Stone?
In addition to being lightweight and affordable, there is a reason this material has a bit of an edge when compared to other commonplace bathtub materials such as acrylic, fiberglass, porcelain and cast iron. The material will not warp overtime unlike fiberglass and acrylic, nor will it break, shatter or chip due to heavy impacts from accidental drops or falls like porcelain will and, as stated before, the material is as durable as cast iron with being four times lighter than it. It is non-porous, meaning it will not absorb water unlike fiberglass and acrylic, which means the structural integrity of it will never change, it also has excellent heat retention on par with higher end materials like enameled steel and copper. And lastly, stone resin is very eco-friendly, made from recycled materials with an entirely green production model. With the added benefit of being a durable material, it will also not create waste as stone resin bathtubs will last several lifetimes.
How to clean and maintain Resin Stone
Surprisingly, stone resin is also quite easy to maintain and clean, as most stains or dirt can be washed away with water and can also be polished easily as well. Simply use a soap based solution or any non-abrasive cleaners to remove any buildup or stains down the line. Avoid using acidic based cleaners or abrasive cleaners as it will damage and remove the finish over time.
How long does Resin Stone last with good maintenance?
With good care and proper maintenance, stone resin can last a lifetime easily.

How Oil And Gas Industry Should Choose LED Explosion-proof Light?
Tumblr media
The oil and gas industry is a dangerous one — the everyday work consists of several thousands of flammable and explosive particles. These are prone to causing explosions at any given moment, so it’s important to equip yourself with the equipment that will endure such catastrophic events!
Sharp Eagle has been helping the industry for years with cameras and explosion-proof lights to raise the safety of workers and help the management assess situations for future safety protocols.
Explosion-proof lights are sophisticated tools for low-light or no-light industrial areas because they are made robustly to prevent sparks from setting the workplace ablaze, but they help workers find a way out too!
criteria when choosing LED Explosion Proof lights?
Explosion Proof Level
Explosion-proof lighting is famous for its capability to prevent any foreign object, such as dust and particles to interact with electronics insight the light enclosure. It’s only natural you should want your lights to have the same capabilities! Sparks from lights and other electronic devices are the number one cause of explosions in oil and gas facilities.
One of the most important factors to look at in this regard is the IP or the enclosure level of protection! This level is marked by two numbers, the first one indicates protection against human damage, solid objects, and dust particles. This one ranges from 0 – 6, and the explosion-proof equipment has to be at a minimum of 4. The other indicates protection against water, and it ranges from 0 – 8.
Sharp Eagle’s explosion-proof lights are robustly made and have an IP degree of 68!
Performance, Quality, And Warranty Are Big Factors
Another thing you want to look for is durability. More precisely, how much will you need to spend on maintenance later on? If you’re looking to save on the equipment now, this can come to collect and skyrocket your maintenance costs. You should look for a product that’s durable, robust and that stands the test of time!
Sharp Eagle’s explosion-proof lights are highly durable and enclosed in materials that protect the lights from external elements, and extreme temperatures! Moreover, our products come with a five-year warranty that guarantees you won’t experience any high replacement costs for this period.
Choosing Reputable Manufacturer
Explosion-proof lighting can and should endure harsh elements and environments, such as heat, cold, gas, steam, and so on. The thermal control structure and enclosure are proven to fight against sudden temperature changes (such as an explosion), at the same time preventing any sparks from interacting with gasses or dust, thus preventing explosions too!
Sharp Eagle’s lights and cameras are proven and ATEX-tested and certified to work in hazardous locations, with areas ranging from Zone 1 To zone 2, from zone 21 to zone 22, and zone 0 explosive atmospheres. We provide an ideal solution that will function in the most dangerous of industries.
Sharp Eagle technology enables you to choose from a wide range of lighting solutions that will meet the challenges of today and the future, protecting your most valuable assets along the way!
Conclusion
Lighting is very important for the uninterrupted work of gas and oil facilities! Never look to save on ensuring workers stay focused, and keeping them safe. The best explosion-proof lights can be found here at Sharp Eagle, as they’ve been ATEX certified, so you can be sure they’ll work in the most dangerous of situations.

New hospital Michele and Pietro Ferrero: natural light, greenery and landscape to cure patients
The new Italian hospital designed by the French Aymeric Zublena of Scau Architecture with Ugo and Paolo Dellapiana of Archicura and Ugo Camerino is operational on the Unesco World Heritage Site of Langhe-Roero. The backbone of the project is the “medical gallery”, a glazed space that distributes light and flows to the complex set on a horizontal core plate
The “Michele and Pietro Ferrero” hospital in Verduno (Cuneo) at the center of the Unesco World Heritage Site of Langhe and Roero, is fully operational since July 19th this year. After twenty years, it was partially opened in a few days in May to deal with the Covid emergency. The new health complex, which combines the two poles of Alba and Bra, was designed by an international team composed by Aymeric Zublena from Scau Architecture (Group Leader, Paris) Ugo and Paolo Dellapiana from Archicura (Turin) and Ugo Camerino (Venice), winner of the tender in 1998.
Humanization, a new concept of hospital
The Verduno hospital is the result of the great season of competitions for new Italian hospitals at the beginning of the 2000s, which revolutionized the design approach bringing the patient to the fore, as suggested by the decalogue drawn up by the then health minister, the oncologist Umberto Veronesi, with Renzo Piano: humanization, urbanity, sociability, organization, interactivity, appropriateness, reliability, innovation, research and training.
Among the new hospitals, built in the name of effectiveness, functionality, comfort and safety often with the formula of project financing, the most avant-garde projects were the four in the Apuan Alps by Mario Cucinella Architects with Studio Altieri (inaugurated between 2013 and 2014), the one in Mestre (Venice) by Studio Altieri with the artistic consultancy of Emilio Ambasz (2007), the one in Biella by 5 + 1AA (2014), and the hospitals entrusted to the Parisian studio led by Aymeric Zublena, which in addition to the Verduno hospital, has also signed those in Bergamo (2012) and Este Monselice (Padua, 2014).
“In the Verduno hospital we took up the idea of the “medical route” conceived by Zublena for the European hospital Georges Pompidou in Paris in 2000 with even greater breadth, transforming it into a “gallery” to bring natural light wherever possible. This is why the new Verduno center is a place full of light and life that does not make you think about illness. The well-being of the spirit is, undoubtedly, one of the greatest contributions to healing.
The hospital must be a machine to be treated and not to be sick, a place to feel comfortable and, furthermore, to work. Technology and efficiency are important, but they are not enough. The quality of the medical service, the attention to the individual and his needs must be the focus of the project. Humanization means having a non-abusive, non-violent structure, a friendly and familiar environment, pleasantly finished, with light and greenery all around. All this will help the patient to heal more quickly”, says Paolo Dellapiana of the Archicura studio who also followed part of the construction supervision.
The design process was therefore fully based on attention to people and their needs. Spaces and paths have been conceived as safe, welcoming and domestic places, with pleasant finishes, natural light and surrounded by greenery to “humanize” the project.
Natural light, views on the landscape and differentiated flows for a hospital that treats
Located at the border between Langhe and Roero, in the north-western region of Piemonte, between the hazelnuts on the north side of the Verduno hill, the new hospital complex opens towards the hills and villages on the opposite bank of the river. The height of the building has been reduced by opting for a horizontal development with a “core plate” setting for medical wards, clinics, surgical hospitalization and radiotherapy wards, which, compared to the monobloc one, simplifies the relationship between the departments and allows greater flexibility of transformation over time to update the conformation of spaces in accordance with any future needs.
The large gardens and patios around which the plate develops, allow to illuminate each department with natural light and to let the vegetation penetrate the heart of the hospital, enhancing the internal-external relationship. The backbone of the complex is the “medical gallery”, a glazed gallery following the slope of the hill from north to south, becoming a large reception area from which it is possible to access the clinics and most of the departments. On the sides there is the “supported body”, two linear blocks housing medical specialties, recovery units and health areas.
Specific routes have been dedicated to hospital employees, in order to clearly divide the flows and keep patients and visitors on fixed areas and routes, specially marked to simplify their movements. Dedicated paths for workers and hospital machines – guaranteed in every department – ere conceived to avoid any type of contamination between different flows.
The main entrance is completely covered with glazed panels so that the exit, which is on the other side of the building, is visible from the first moment you enter the hospital. An internal/external filter that conveys a feeling of clarity and hope, without any oppression.
Always with the aim of “humanizing” healthcare places, the rooms have been equipped with a double row of windows, one high and one low, to allow those who are bedridden to enjoy the surrounding landscape. Waiting rooms, all equipped with comfortable elements, are located in sunny areas. The information points are identifiable and well distributed, the common areas in which to have more social contact are differentiated from private ones with greater privacy.
The facts and technologies of the project
The total volume of the intervention is 13.9 million cubic feet, divided into eleven levels, with approximately 1.18 million square feet of floor area. There are 350 beds, mainly in single rooms.
Twelve operating rooms, twelve intensive care beds, ten cardiac intensive care units, ten emergency medicine units and a radiotherapy bunker. A heliport connects the hospital with the regional hospital network.
The facades are made of insulated precast concrete sandwich panels.  The curtain walls are realized with aluminium and insulated glass, while the red cladded tower and volumes of the west facade and of the courtyard are made by insulated metal panels. The large glazed surface is instead a structural facade in steel and insulated glass.
The complex is equipped with the most advanced technologies that have been gradually updated since the original 1998 project and adapted over the years. High-performance windows, advanced wall stratigraphy, 200 kW photovoltaic system, 1,700 kW cogeneration plant, 16,000 kW condensing boilers, heat-recovery ventilation system, Led lighting, use of Bms – building management system – for building maintenance, has allowed to reach the energy class A+.

ARCHICURA by Paolo Dellapiana
Archicura is an architectural firm based in Turin founded by Paolo Dellapiana in 1994 with the collaboration of Ugo Dellapiana. Since its creation, Archicura has carried out numerous works in various fields: residencies, major work of territorial requalification, tertiary and productive buildings constitute the rich portfolio of the group, and participation in national and international competitions.
Among the main projects are the village of San Cassiano in Alba (2018), the factory Sancassiano in Roddi, Cuneo (2016), the new headquarters of Banca Sella in Biella in collaboration with Francesco Bermond Des Ambrois (2010), the church of the transfiguration in Alba (2009), Casa Visiera in Altavilla, Alba (2009) and the extension of the Cascina Adelaide in Barolo, Cuneo (2004).
A subtle thread links all Archicura’s projects: it is the emotional factor that any building can and should have towards its users, a key element that contributes to the physical and mental wellness that a construction should always provide through its form, its materials, its functionality and its relationship to the environment in which it is located.
An architecture that almost always arises in silence, embracing nature, the environment and the sky, which grafts the roots into the earth and opens the doors for those who will experience it. The motto of the studio is: “Architecture is frozen music, it is how music would appear if we could see it” by J. W. Von Goethe which emphasizes a sensitivity, almost artistic, in the approach to architecture, which is never monochord, but multi-coloured and polyhedral.

Thursdays Workshop
5th March
Today was one of the first day of the workshop that we have signed up for, this will be a weekly routine on every Thursday morning. The aim of the workshop/s is to develop our ideas and use a range of materials and processes to help us get the best possible outcome. We was producing and creating with a range of materials and processes.
Materials:
MDF
Ply
Coated MDF
Tin
Aluminium
Acrylic
PVC
Processes
dammering
drilling
spraypainting
scratching
burning
engraving
digging
heating
melting
Today was a day of creating art with the materials available, I created 15 different pieces, I tried to experiment with all of the materials in many ways, meaning that I have used the same type of material more than once but I have used a different process on it, this allowed me to see what it would look like but also what it does to the material how it affects its texture, flexibility and form.
The image below shows show the range of materials that I worked with.
Tumblr media
This is a selection of metals that I used, this consisted of tin and aluminium, there's many processed that I used this was mainly to see how each material reacted/formed, by playing around with this I now know how heavy each material is and how they work with each process.
With the tin I decided to burn it, that would be the piece of metal with the hole in it, I found this a quick and easy way of manipulating the product as it was not so dense and thin which allowed it to deform. Another pieces I hammered on a sound proof bag that is the bottom left piece of metal, this was also easy to do as the tin manipulated around the hammer to create quick easy dents, again this didn’t require me to use a lot of force. I found that tin is easily formed, it can be easily reshaped by hand, this tells you how malleable the metal is. I liked using tin as it is almost does what you want it do to, this is a good lesson for me as I have now physically played with it meaning that I can now figure out how I could use this in the future/or how it would come useful to me with my project.
The aluminium was a slightly different experience, with this I decided to hammer it on a metal cube that had holes already dented in them, this was made for this kind of purpose, the holes varied in size, I used two pieces of aluminium on this cube both with different holes. The metal on the left of the picture that looks bubbly was made on one of the sides of the cube that had a variety of 4 different sized dents, I decided to use all 4 sizes to create a pattern, I done this by placing down the metal plate on top of the cube and then with force hammering down to make the metal create these dents, I then moved the metal to the side where it was untouched and done the process again.
I then also done this to another pice of metal but on a different face of the cube, this is the pice in the top middle part of the picture, this side of the cube had one big dent that covers the whole face, I tried to create this dent on my metal but form the constant hammering in one place I made a hole, this was created through bad technique however this is just a test, I then decided to fold the edged of the metal around the cube just to see how it would form.
The third piece of aluminium I drilled in with a small drill piece, this piece is located in the bottom right hand corner of the image, this was a test to see how easy it would be to create holes in, also how the metal reacts and forms. I liked this as the outcome of this look neat and minimalistic, this is something that I like and what I will be aiming for in my project.
Working with the aluminium was fun, this showed me how the metal works and reacts to different processes. This material is defiantly more dense than tin meaning it could be more sturdy and would be good for structure/or protection. Now that I know this I could consider using this as one of my materials if  I needed to.
Tumblr media
I also worked with wood, I have worked with wood before so I had some knowledge already of what is available and what processes I can do with it to get a certain outcome. However it was still fun and satisfying to play around.
The wood in the top right hand corner is MDF this wood is easy to work with as this wood is soft and easy to manipulate. For this piece decided to use a chisel and carve out small scales, again I found this easy as the wood is soft and it didn't take too much pressure to insert the chisel, I then decided to born the pice to make the fins more visible. Making this allowed me to discover what a range of processes can create.
I then again used MDF as I have worked with it previously and it naturally felt comfortable to reach for it, this is the piece in the middle left of the image. As I have worked with it before I wanted to try as much as I could to see what my outcome would be, at first I hammered the wood which gave me the cracked edges, I then burnt the wood to emphasise the dents and cracks, after that I decided to spray paint and last I used a hand electric engraver and engraved the leaf into the wood. I found this piece fun and exiting to do as I didn’t know what the outcome would be after the next process.
The next piece of material I worked on was the white coated MDF this is the middle right hand side piece of material, with this I wanted to try out the different shapes and sizes of chisels, I found that chiseling in this wood was not easy as the grains of wood all flow one way and I was going against the flow, however I found that with smaller and thinner equipment it was easier to gouge than with the bigger, as you can see in the picture the smaller grooves look neat and precise, the bigger ones look uneven and messy. I mainly wanted to try this to see how it would look and what sort of texture it would have. After that I decided to burn the wood to give it a visual texture, I found that this also frames the grooves and gives it that juxtaposition between light and dark.
later on I decided to play around with PLY wood, I found that this wood was super easy and smooth to work with, this is the bottom piece of wood in the image. I again used the chiseling method, I found that this didn’t take much force for me to make a groove, making this piece was fun and easy.
Working with wood was a good memory tester, as I have previously worked worth it I had an advantage as I knew some of its durability and how it works. Now that I have tried these different processes I know how the wood looks and feels, I can now apply this to my work if I will be woking with wood.
Tumblr media
I also worked with acrylic. Acrylic is a plastic that can come in many colours and can easily be shaped under heat. I have also studied and worked with this material before.
These pieces of acrylic are all the same they don't differ in any way apart from the top design, I sprayed each pice of acrylic with different coloured spray paint, as you can see I used yellow green and red, however I used different techniques on each, I paced the plain pieces of acrylic on a spinning bored with the yellow paint I sprayed from the top to get a full spray over the material, with the green I sprayed from one side only which created a smooth smokey effect the green starts to dissipater towards the top and last I decided to spare the red on whilst the board was constantly spinning this sprayed every edge and also created a spitting/droplet effect towards the middle. Once the pint dried I engrave with an electric file these patterns, the green is a tall plant the red is a plant with multiple flower heads and the yellow is alemon with a leaf.
Spraying acrylic was fun and experimental for me as I didn’t know how it would turn out when spraying it in in the different angles and movements. I used the bright colours as I had a white clean canvas to work on the meaning that the full colour would come out and it would look bright and appealing, however in the future I will have to look into the colours and apply it to my audience and what they would like if I use this in my final outcome. Using the electric file was a challenge as the vibration from the mechanism goes up your arm which made me unsteady, have I wanted to use this process as I knew if I made the space between the colours it would allow the pattern or image to come through clearer than it would if I burned it or scratched it.
I like the final outcome of these test pieces this is something that I would definitely consider using maybe not in this form depending on what materials I decide to use, but I find it appealing and I could also find a way to connect it with my audience.
Tumblr media
Later on once I used all the material and processes, I got introduced to PVC this is plastic but it is in a form which allows it to change under heat, I have never worked with this before so this is something new and so was the process. I wasn’t too sure on how to play around with it or what to do, in which I then decided to reuse one of the pieces of wood which are drilled into from a previous material test and this was to see if the PVC would be hot enough and thin enough to fall through the gaps however I found that this didn’t work and instead the PVC just scrunched up and slightly formed around the woods and didn’t stick at all I could easily pull that off. With the other PVC I wanted to see if maybe the two plastics would melt together during the process of heating I found that again they only scrunched up by themselves and wouldn’t stick which I then tried to physically hold together to see if they would hold, as you can see the two pieces are together however I don’t believe they are stuck I think they have just moulded around the scrunched up plastic.
Playing with PVC was fun however its would be hard to use as it doesn't stick or I can't manipulate it into my desired from, I could however look into the properties and how the plastic works or what I could use it on, this could be used in one of my ideas as it has bright colours is a soft plastic Maning it could also be used as a waterproof base.
Tumblr media
One of the final processes that I haven't yet used was scratching into the metal, I was a little hesitant about doing this as if it goes wrong this could mean that you would have to start a whole new piece as you can't erase what you have done. I used aluminium as my desired material to scratch into as working with it previously I knew that's a much harder metal and could stand the scratching. The process of scratching is not hard its like drawing on metal but it is permanent. As I have never done this before and this was my first pieces I believe that it went well, I didn't find it hard to scratch into the metal as the tools where sharp.
This process is fairly easy and would be a good outcome if I work with metal as it gives it a small touch even when you leave the material plain e.g. not heated or painted. As you can see in the picture the image is not so visible until you shine light or come close to it, again this could contribute to a minimalistic design.
Tumblr media
I found this workshop productive as I have worked with many materials, I now know how they work and how to use them. I have also learned in the process of what different processes can achieve and I have also learned a new process which was scratching into metals and worked with a new martial which was PVC.
Not only was it the materials and processes that I learned about but it was also the health and safety of each process and how to do it without hurting myself or  others, this means that I can now go I into that workshop and used the equipment any time I want.
I believe that working with this workshop was a good idea as I now have experience with some harder metals and a range of processes which I can now use in my outcome/idea, this means that I can create a sturdier final piece (whatever it may be).

LED Lights - When And Where It Is Reasonable
Tumblr media
What Exactly Are Led Lighting?
LED could be the acronym for light emitting diodes. LED's are exceptionally versatile and employed for different jobs and also are found in a variety of apparatus. Ostensibly , they are tiny bulbs which fit right into a electric circuit. However, unlike standard bulbs that are shining they don't really have a filament that will burn out, plus so they don't get scorching . They're illuminated exclusively from the movement of electrons in a semiconductor thing, and their durable power can be provided a typical transistor. The life span of an LED exceeds the short life span of a luminous bulb with tens of thousands of hrs. Little LEDs have already substituting the tubes which light upward liquid crystal display HD-TVs to create slimmer televisions.
Light emitting diode lights usually are not that economical - notably such as a bulb which gives the very same level of lighting energy being a routine 60 or 75 watt incandescent bulbs. Yet, upkeep cost savings along with an general decrease in cost of ownership on the product's lifetime and can counter the initial high price tag of buying the gentle. You can get more details about LED light by visiting LEDlightstech site.
LED lights have a lot of great environmental benefits within the outdated conventional light bulb. The lights use in between 50%-90percent less energy compared to typical bulb which means enormous carbon dioxide reductions and because they do not include mercurythey last as much as 20 times more and so they truly are made from entirely biodegradable substances. For instance, the extruded aluminium heatsink used in LED down lights and LED area lights is manufactured with chiefly with post industrial recycled stuff. As they've been more difficult towards the environment depending around the substances they're made out of and because of the simple fact that they continue more implies a reduction in waste for homes and business.
When and where will be LED lights useful?
As a result of benefits of very low voltages, longevity, reliability, quick on-off switching, no UV emissions, and no flicker and also dramatically decreased maintenance requirements LED's are employed in several apps. They are mainly used in:
* visible display models eg. Seven section exhibits and alpha numerical screens widely utilized in watches, digital clocks and loops
* Optical apparatus like Optocouplers
* On-off index in cells.
* Some LED's radiating undetectable infrared light are still used in transferring information from remote controls and burglar alarms
* Collected collectively , they are able to form images on a jumbo television screen or light a traffic lighting.
LED lighting have several software and are currently utilized in nighttime light, art light, in your property - for closets, underneath or combined skirting in kitchens, as living and bedroom rooms, outdoor light and even xmas tree light.
They are generally utilised in modest gadgets such as an mp3player, DVD machines, computers and televisions. There are models of LED bulbs that can be used in routine light and lamps fixtures, nevertheless these bulbs come with a bigger price tag. Flash lights also make use of LED technologies due to its ability to easily be directed in a continuous stream. They truly are even found in visitors lighting and outward signs of some cities. Many motor vehicle manufacturers will also be applying LEDs for their headlights. Car parks, airports, hotels, pubs, nightclubs, business offices, fabricating marketplace, hospitals, aged car services, mining sector, ships, lifts, and exit signs and several different areas are now making use of the benefits of light emitting diodes.
We find them in photographic tools and they are available in numerous sizes plus several also provide the additional choice of a flash function, that may provide an extra burst of light if required.

Flight Price from Nigeria to Saudi Arabia 2019
Tumblr media
Saudi Arabia is unarguably one of the most popular travel destinations among businessmen, tourist and particularly Muslim faithful. Millions of travellers enter the country yearly for business, vacation and on religious adventures. Officially, the flight time from Lagos, Nigeria to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia is about 6 hours. This official flight time assumes a non-stop flight in a commercial airliner cruising at an average speed of 500mph. It is also calculated based on the shortest straight line flight distance from Lagos in Nigeria to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. This distance is around 2,609 miles which is equivalent to 4,198 kilometres. However, it's a little different in reality. Unless you are flying on your private jet, the time it may take to arrive at your destination can go as high as 30 hours.   Saudi Arabia Visa Requirements Nigeria doesn’t have a visa-free travel agreement with Saudi Arabia. This means that you are definitely going to need a visa to visit the ever popular Arabian nation. Travellers can apply for five categories of visa, depending on their purpose of visit. Tourist can apply for visitors visa, businessmen for a business visa, students for study visa, workers for a work visa and those on transit for a transit visa. Before you are issued a Saudi Arabian visa, you'll need to put the following requirements in order; A completed and signed visa application form Copies of your recent passport which captures your full face within a light background A Nigerian passport with a validity exceeding your expected return date and some blank pages for visa stamps Copy of the passport datasheet Copies of your previous visa if any A cover letter stating the purpose of your visit to Saudi Arabia Hotel reservation for the entire duration of your intended stay in Saudi Arabia Proof of legal stay (that’s if the application isn’t presented in the country of origin) Flight itinerary with dates and flight numbers specifying entry and exit from Saudi Arabia For a business visa, you’ll need to provide an original copy of the invitation letter from the inviting company in Saudi Arabia. Also, you may need to provide proof of previous trade relationship between you and the company if it exists Certificate of employment if employed A certificate from your employer approving your business visit if employed Trade register excerpts or similar documents if you are self-employed A recent bank statement Visa fees   Cost of Flight from Nigeria to Saudi Arabia Nigeria to Saudi Arabia via EgyptAir Economy class - ₦300,000 to ₦400,000 Business class - ₦400,000 to ₦600,000 Nigeria to Saudi Arabia via Turkish Airways Economy class - ₦400,000 to ₦550,000 Business class - ₦750,000 to ₦850,000 Nigeria to Saudi Arabia via Etihad Airlines Economy class - ₦600,000 to ₦750,000 Nigeria to Saudi Arabia via Emirate Air Economy class - ₦600,000 to ₦850,000 Nigeria to Saudi Arabia via Air France Economy class - ₦82,000 to ₦1,100,000 Business class - ₦1,300,000 to ₦1,650,000   Cheap Flights to Saudi Arabia When planning a trip to Saudi Arabia, the key to getting a good deal for flight tickets is timing. As much as 30% differences may exist between tickets bought from different time periods – even on the same day. Buying your flight tickets weeks before your flight is scheduled is a pretty good way to save some extra cash. Usually, tickets bought early are always way cheaper than those bought a few days before the flight. It’s not totally unusual to experience a hike in prices of flight tickets during Muslim holidays. Saudi Arabia is the birth land of the Islam religion and hosts two sacred mosques (Mecca’s Masjid al-Haram mosque and Medina’s Masjid an-Nabawi mosque) held in high esteem by Muslims globally. During Islamic Holidays like the Hajj, traffic from Nigeria to Saudi Arabia is always at its highest peak. Booking flights during these periods could mean you will pay more than obtainable at other times.   Prepping for an International Long Haul Flight If you booked a ticket for a flight from Nigeria to Saudi Arabia, you are undeniably in for a long haul flight. No matter how utopian your destination may seem, travelling in a high flying aluminium tube for several hours can seem a little problematic. Only a few lucky travellers can sleep well on planes, if you aren’t among the lucky ones, you might want to begin your journey only after being well rested. Some airlines might allow you to choose from available seats for an extra fee if you have the extra cash to pay. This is usually a good option to explore. By doing this, you can select a comfortable spot you can rest comfortably during the hours-long long-haul flight. Another option would be to upgrade to business or first class. Both classes offer larger space, better meals and ultimately a higher level of comfort. Flights from Nigeria to Saudi Arabia could be particularly boring if you aren’t well-entertained. Make no mistakes, this is usually the case for almost every other long haul flights, especially when the provided in-flight entertainment isn’t really your definition of entertainment. If your flight makes a stopover, it’s often a good time to take a quick walk to stretch your limbs and take a few moments to rest and recuperate. It’s advisable to go for a quick massage and, maybe, use the gym for a few moments if you are lucky to make a stop at a reputable airport. Cabin air is infamously dry; you might want to pack some extra bottles of water to drink during your flight duration if you are big on gulping water. Also, consider dressing light. For long haul flights that may see you seated on a seat for hours, it’s usually good practice to use light and loose fitting clothing. You might find yourself in a situation where you feel uncomfortable throughout the entire duration of the flight. Read the full article

The Mining of Aluminium
Durable and attractive doors are an essential feature in any home. Aluminum sliding doors provide the functionality to your home and are becoming a sign of luxury in the modern décor of UK homes, as an alternative to conventional hinged wooden doors. Aluminum doors give a welcoming atmosphere and a sense of style to your house. Sliding Doors made from the most beautiful quality aluminum will last longer, therefore increasing the value of your property/mining firm and are a low maintenance choice that will fit any budget. You are sure to find something that matches your needs perfectly as the UK based businesses, and suppliers offer a large variety of aluminum sliding doors and windows. The doors can be effortlessly swept aside in seconds enabling any room to embrace a larger space. Aluminum bi-folding doors can be installed as panels up to one meter wide, creating a sizeable obstruction-free opening that is why they are a popular choice for restaurants and high-class retail businesses in the UK.
Installing double glazing doors to the exterior of your house forms insulation against the noise outside of your home. The two panels of the double glazing door prevent heat from escaping and keep the cold air outside in winters while stops the unwanted heat from entering your home in summers, keeping the inside cool. Entry doors should be tough enough to withstand the vagaries of weather yet appealing and welcoming to you and your visitors. They should give protection to your home from burglars while giving you and your family quick access and exit. Old wood and veneer doors warp crack and delaminate with age due to exposure to the elements. Old metal doors are also prone to creaking and peeling after many years of faithful service.
Aging can create accessibility problems with your front door, making it a hassle not only for you but for other mining companies, especially those with mobility problems. It is essential to have an entry door which is accessible all your visitors able and disabled. The threshold and the front door must be made in such a way that no one will find it too cumbersome to gain entry despite their physical conditions. There are dozens of door designs, and extensive collections can be found at lumberyards home centers and door dealers. Miners can specify the types of panels and glass designs they want. Mining investors will, however, have to wait for a couple of weeks for such special requests. Choosing the material for your door is an important decision. Most aluminium doors and windows for houses are a combination of, although the surface is what mostly affects appearance, price, durability, and security. Attractive and robust doors are a central feature in any home. Aluminum sliding doors provide the functionality to your home and are becoming a sign of luxury in the modern décor of UK homes, as an alternative to conventional hinged wooden doors. You are sure to find something that matches your needs perfectly as the UK based businesses, and suppliers offer a large variety of aluminum sliding doors and windows. Catalyst for growth
SOHAR Port and Freezone is becoming instrumental in the growth of Sohar as Oman’s industrial, logistics and manufacturing hub. Excerpts from an interview with CEO, Mark Geilenkirchen
How was your performance in 2018? And please give us a brief on the latest developments and major milestones in SOHAR Port and Freezone’s operations?
SOHAR had another great year in 2018. The volumes that went through our port went up and the number of ships also increased. We received almost 10 ships per day in 2018, totalling up to 3443 vessels.
The volumes went up to a total of 64 million tonnes. (For the non-logisticians: this is comparable to 640 million large refrigerators. If you put these in a long row, you cover 448,000 kilometres of road, so refrigerators 11 times around the world).
Signalling a positive start to 2019, SOHAR has already welcomed Mannesmann and Oman Maritime Waste Treatment in the port to ensure our growth continues.
The collaboration with Mannesmann will see the creation of Calcined Petroleum Coke (CPC) and Recarburizer Calcined Coke (RPC) plants on a 40ha of land at the Port. This is one of the first projects that will be built in the reclaimed area of the Port, and will add value to both the aluminium and steel industries within SOHAR.
The agreement with Oman Maritime Water Treatment will result in the construction of a full-fledged International Protocol of Marine Pollution (MARPOL-compliant facility at the port. This is being done to ensure that ship waste collection and disposal are carried out in compliance with global MARPOL standards.
As well, SOHAR has signed an agreement to replace existing tug boats. Five vessels that provide towage services for all the vessels entering and exiting the port will be replaced. The contract includes the supply, manning, management, operation and maintenance of these five boats on a 24-hour basis.
In a significant effort to tap into the Sultanate’s renewable energy potential, SOHAR Port and Freezone has entered into a land lease agreement with Shell Development Oman (SDO) in collaboration with Shell New Energies. The agreement will see the provision of clean energy solutions through the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) projects, to meet energy demands of industrial tenants within SOHAR Freezone.
Sustainability is one of our key values at SOHAR and this partnership with Shell will create solar powered solutions that are the first-of-its-kind in the country. It also marks an incredible milestone and the first step in our proactive long-term programme to transform our 4,500-hectare development into a ‘green port’.
We hope that the changes we are implementing today will encourage current clients and future investors to adopt cleaner technologies and sustainable practices tomorrow.
Finally, SOHAR Port and Freezone have launched SOHAR Navigate, a unique online route planner, which provides information to find the best and most efficient way to transport container cargo globally via the port. The platform is the first of its kind in the region and will offer sea schedules to connect up to 550 ports worldwide. It is considered the most comprehensive route planner of its kind and capitalises on the technology of our partner, the Port of Rotterdam. We have designed SOHAR Navigate to suit our regional and global stakeholders and provide them with outreach, as well as a user-friendly means to locate the most efficient and optimal routes for their containers.
How is SOHAR Port and Freezone becoming instrumental in the growth of Sohar as Oman’s industrial, logistics and manufacturing hub?
Over the past year, SOHAR has not only witnessed growth in its capacity, but also in its physical size thanks to the SOHAR Port South expansion. In 2018, 50 hectares of land was added to the current capacity of 2,000 hectares in the first phase of the expansion and a further 200 hectares is planned to be added in the future. This significant development will ensure that we can attract even more interest in Oman as a logistics hub for the Gulf.
An achievement I am very pleased about is our partnership with Marafi Sohar to create and operate a new high-capacity mineral aggregate terminal at the Port. This development is expected to generate more market opportunities since SOHAR is ideally equipped to develop high-capacity aggregate facilities, especially when you consider most of the quarries producing mineral aggregate are in close proximity to the port. As a result, we can provide easy access for export, which is a great opportunity for development.
Apart from fuel products, the refinery in SOHAR also produces significant volumes of naphtha and propylene, which serve as feedstock for the adjoining aromatics and polypropylene plant.
Our deep-water berths also allow for raw materials such as iron ore to be easily offloaded, ensuring smoother primary and secondary production processes.
The Food Cluster at SOHAR has arguably been one of our most innovative projects, given the massive potential of the food industry both in upstream and downstream businesses. This project will drive further integration between the port and free zone complex as this cluster is to designed to offer an entire value chain of food processing and logistics support for the expanding multibillion-dollar regional food industry.
In addition to a new flour mill and grain silo complex, the SOHAR food cluster will also house a sugar refinery, with packaging and distribution facilities planned in the future.
The cluster will enable us to attract significant new business to SOHAR with a dedicated deep-water berth and agro-terminal for the fast and efficient movement of foodstuffs within the Port.
At the Freezone, agreements for warehouse units with Matrix Prime Logistics and J-Line Logistics will add a further 6,700 square metres (64 units) to the total current capacity of 13,000 square metres. Our goal is to establish a logistics cluster in the freezone, where transhipment and value-added logistics (VAL) can take place.
Similarly, SOHAR Freezone has also entered into a new partnership to develop a 58-hectare area to offer turnkey, readymade, built-to-lease logistics and light industrial units in various size formats, including box and flex-log. This will further help position SOHAR as a premier logistics hub in the region.
And how is your vision is aligning with the Sultanate of Oman’s national logistics strategy?
As part of the Asyad Group, established in 2016 to maximise the economic and financial returns from government investments in ports, freezones, land and sea transport and logistic services companies, we seek to play an active role in the nation’s vision to become a global logistics hub.
Earlier this year, we signed an agreement with Dredging International NV for the development of the first phase of SOHAR Port South. This expansion is vital for SOHAR and has been facilitated by our rapid growth and will be assigned almost exclusively for oil and gas-based investments. We expect to see a significant increase in trade flows to the Sultanate as a result, as it will encourage shipping lines to make more direct calls to the port, opening the doors of opportunity to a larger group of potential customers in the future. Oman is already experiencing solid growth in the food logistics sector and e-commerce so the rapid development of transportation infrastructure and modern warehousing equipped with IT, will be major contributors to that growth.
What is your future outlook?
We have many exciting new projects coming online in 2019.
To attract smaller players in cargo shipment, we are planning to promote the consolidation of shipping cargo in the Freezone, as many currently transport their cargo over land to other port destinations in the region. Providing more practical options for cargo consolidation will reduce unnecessary delays and helps increase cargo volumes.
Some of our larger projects include new ferrochrome smelters that are under construction in the Freezone. This will be accompanied by the second biggest antimony plant of its kind in the world, and the creation of the SOHAR Cotton Cluster.
We have also recently concluded an agreement for the creation of a petroleum coke calciner plant in the Freezone, where raw petroleum coke will be used as feedstock for downstream petrochemical industries.
As always, keeping in line with the SOHAR motto ‘It all starts here’, we are constantly seeking out new and innovative solutions for the benefit of everyone in and around SOHAR in order to sustain our rapid growth rate as well as a become known as one of the leading global integrated Port and Freezone complexes.

How Will Custom Metal Signs Help Your Business
Custom metal signs lend a shine to your business, no doubt.
Custom metal signs offer many options of sizes, finishes, mounting and shapes. A good aluminium signage should bring your business the attention it deserves. Your storefront or business premises definitely needs an impressive branding. With custom metal signages you could give it the shiny and glitzy look that could be an eye-catcher. Studies reveal that about one in ten customers walk in because the attractive business sign grabbed their attention.
Contour cutting of metal plates is now in trend. These could be signs or nameplates that could be printed to add that burst of vibrant colour, preferably a brand colour, which could be an impressive branding technique.
What’s more! Aluminium signs are attractive and effective, with a durable, weather-resistant metal finish. They are cost-effective and attention-grabbing with a bold style. Especially when you have to a need for outdoor signage that you do not want to go unnoticed, metal signs are your best bet. Think No Entry signs or Private Property signs, or even an imperative No Smoking sign indoors Your business would also have multiple uses for custom metal signs for indoor use as well. You could use signs with emotional messaging at exit points, like a “Thank You for Stopping By” sign, that would help customers build a bond with your business and have them come back effortlessly.
With custom metal signs even the most mundane No Smoking Signs can be resurrected with a more effective messaging, like “We would hate to see you leave us. Please quit smoking!” With that, you would already have your customer in your grip.
Custom metal signages allow you to be extremely creative with your design. Your No Entry signs could have a hint of humour, so you could still give your customers the message in a rather pleasant and effective way, which would allow you to garner that goodwill for your business.
There is no restriction on size while customizing it. When you need your message to be more noticeable from a distance perhaps, you would like to have a larger plate with contrasting black and white colours, so your signage doesn’t go unnoticed. As in the case of private property signs that you mount outdoors on a tree or on a high gate or wall, custom metal signs allows you the freedom of size, font and mounting options.
Irrespective of the size of your business, custom metal signs are a good investment in stylish, bold and durable signages, to show off your business, which would definitely help you create that lasting impression or goodwill with your customer base.
