I'm going back to sleep after this I only wanted to be up for a short while but I saw the notes on my blorbo house notes

I just want to state that no as far as I am aware I am not a system and the blorbo house is purely an imaginary thing that I made up, that just takes place "in my brain". It could've been any setting but when talking with my friend we made it be in my brain specifically because of things like saying a character is like a parasite in your brain or like you're rotating them in your mind... Just imagining how your blorbos would live in a house together, but it's tied to you specifically because they're away from their source in a safe environment with you specifically.... And also it's in my bio as a way to list some of my Blorbos

I am definitely very much so mental illness and let me tell you I am not normal about these characters I can get quite obsessive over these characters when hyperfixated but I feel like I had to make up a thing for them all so they feel like they're always there and aren't upset when I'm focusing on other things

I'm very happy that I made a post that's a hit with system communities but I'm just saying here to people possibly trying to diagnose me - I am not a system as far as I know, I definitely have undiagnosed things but DID/OSSD is not it because... I think I'd know if that was the case

But yeah, again, the blorbo dream house is a purely made up thing and I'm just mentally ill about fictional characters in Another Way

(I think a part of this is the wording of my post, especially when I said "supposedly exists in your brain specifically" I worded it that way because we were just making this up at first and it was kinda funny that like... I was discussing an AU thingy with a friend when the setting is MY brain like the were talking about a fictional place in another person's "mind". Except not really it's just... Made up. It's like saying your brain is empty except for 2 braincells who just slap each other with pillows, personifying 'two braincells')

so let's talk some more about gallavich and their adopted runaway trans daughter Starr (more on her here and here; it'll make more sense if you read those posts first)

I mentioned that I think Mickey and Ian would move back to the South Side, and they'd have a house instead of an apartment, and that Starr would clean up the place in thanks for letting her stay—while she's doing so, maybe she runs across a school photo of a little blonde kid with a goofy smile, and familiar blue eyes, and big glasses, and she'd bet anything that this kid is related to Mickey

and she finds a frame that isn't being used, maybe up in the attic, and puts the picture in the frame and sets it on the mantel in the living room next to other family photos (Debbie and Franny; Debbie, Carl, and Liam; Lip and Tammi and their kids; a selfie of Fiona at the beach; Mickey and Ian's wedding photo; stuff like that)

so Mickey is home one day while Ian is off visiting his siblings—Mickey is too peopled out that day and decided to stay home—when he notices the new picture with the others; Starr sees his reaction, like he's seen a ghost, and she says she found the picture when she was cleaning, and thought it looked good in the frame. but Mickey's reaction maybe spooks her a little bit, and she's like "I hope that was okay"

Mickey doesn't say anything at first, but he's uncharacteristically quiet when he nods and says "yeah, that's okay" but he doesn't explain—and look, Starr knows when people wanna talk about stuff but also don't want to at the same time, but she's thirteen or fourteen years old and has no impulse control so she asks who the kid is, and even though she guessed it she's still kinda surprised when Mickey says "that's my son"

and she asks him "do you wanna talk about it?" to which he says fuck no; she's all prepared to drop the subject when he says that he hasn't even seen the kid in years, not since he was in prison and Svetlana brought Yev to visit. and slowly—maybe over the next few weeks—she learns more of the story, and even though Mickey doesn't tell her everything, she's smart enough to put the pieces together

because I really love the idea that Mickey and Svetlana get back in touch after everything went down and he and Ian got married (she'd give him shit about where was her invitation and he was all "I didn't know your fuckin address!" but she loved seeing the pictures and said "you and carrot boy look very happy together"), and now they meet up every few months for lunch or something, maybe text now and again; she keeps him updated on Yevgeny and how he's doing in school ("he wants to go to college and be doctor") and she told Mickey that if he wants to meet Yev properly he can, but he's never taken her up on the offer because he thinks Yev is better off without him

and Starr just looks at Mickey, and the picture of Yevgeny—he's a couple years younger than she is, I figure this would be when he's about ten or so—and tells him about how she thought her parents loved her, but that was only when they thought she was their son, and "I don't know what you did before but you can't be worse than my folks"

they talk about it now and again—Ian knows they do but he's learned to let Mickey work through things at his own pace—and she finds out Yevgeny is about to start middle school, and Starr eventually tells Mickey that he should go see his son. Mickey of course thinks it's a terrible idea but she's like look, man, you guys have been great to me, and it wouldn't be the end of the world if your kid at least knew you were out there. unfortunately she's painfully aware of what it's like knowing your parents don't want anything to do with you, but it's also clear to her that it's painful for Mickey to think about his son ("talking to him might be hard, but it can't be worse than staying away")

finally after Starr has been staying with them for a while—she eventually got Ian on the "talk to Yevgeny" train too, and Mickey complained that they were "fuckin ganging up on him"—Mickey goes into the kitchen after dinner, and Starr and Ian can hear him talking on the phone to someone about "-wanna see the kid next time, if that's okay" and they give each other a tiny high five

when he comes back from lunch with Svetlana a few weeks later it's with a smile on his face and some new pictures of him and Yevgeny on his phone, as well as one with him and Svet and Yev

Ian is absolutely over the moon, too, and insists they print out the pictures and put them up on the mantelpiece; and Mickey asks if the two of them wanna come along the next time he sees Svet and the kid (and Ian is like uh yeah I haven't seen Lana in forever and I wanna know how Yevgeny is doing because he loved that kid so much and I really feel like the show dropped the ball on Ian and Svet's relationship too, which is a crying shame)

and the three of them settle in to watch TV together, their cat Duchess sprawled across Mickey and Ian's laps, and their pit bull Lady curled up by Starr's feet in her chosen armchair, and Ian just grins at Mickey and doesn't have to say how proud he is of his husband, because it's written all over his face

(I'm sure I'll write more about Starr and her adopted gay uncles in the future but I just love the idea that she'd be a catalyst for Mickey reconnecting with Yevgeny, and how he'd try his best to be the exact opposite of his own dad ;~; )

It's tough I know, and it can really wear on you over time. You're doing great though, you really are. It's so hard to see how far we've come when we are living in this constant state of survival, but you know what's really cool? There's a past version of you right now that is so incredibly proud of you. If that you could see yourself right now, they'd be in awe at how far you've come, and how much you've grown. Where you are today will be that same person in a few months or a year, marveling at your progress. You are doing so very well, even on tough days. Remember that. The crew and I are so very proud of you lovelies, and we know past you is too (and hopefully present you, but I understand if that's harder to do). Get some rest and keep at it, you got this. <3

THINGS I ENJOYED

THE FROG SCENE. My new favourite warriors moment. I need to draw Nightheart with a frog suckered onto his face. Incredible. Nightheart is such a silly goofy guy and I'm so glad he gets to do stupid things each book.

SPLASHTAIL!!!!!! This is a BIG one for me, and ohhhh he was so evil it was so GOOD. We really got to see his manipulative side come out here and I adored it

Splashtail rejecting Frostpaw because it would be weird to date an apprentice. It's a small thing, but it's nice to have a little bit of canon saying hey. Stop.

Frostpaw slowly realising something is Wrong in RiverClan, but still turning to Splashtail because he built up trust between them. It's so clever and dark

Harelight! I like the guy and I'm glad he gets a little bit of spotlight. It's also nice to see him telling Frostpaw that he can help her learn to disguise her pale coat, I feel like I haven't seen that mentioned in a while.

Cloverfoot mentioning how Mistystar decorated her den with shells and feathers!!

HER ENDING????? OH MY GOD I feel stupid but I did NOT see that coming I was so shocked it was like Curlfeather all over again LMAO. Why did they wait until she was right outside WindClan though. She'll be found and live. I highly doubt they'd kill off their best protagonist on book 3.

The trials! I know they were maybe a bit boring but I actually liked seeing them, AND seeing Berryheart get more and more pissed off throughout the book LMAO. Hilarious how they gave Nightheart a trial he basically already did last book (stealing from the twolegs)

Berryheart. She's terrible. It's fun.

Sunbeam is still a pushover. Sure she stands up for herself a bit more now, but she usually chooses to back down in the face of conflict. I'm glad she's kept her personality after getting with Nightheart, which leads me to...

Sunbeam and Nightheart's relationship. I actually thought they were written okay for once. Sunbeam is not so sure about him at first (and is reasonably upset he publicly declared his love for her and decided to move in with her without consulting her first) but we actually get to see her come to appreciate him more. It's not the strongest romance obviously, but for warrior cats, the way it was handled in this book (not the other two) was actually not that bad, and I didn't mind that they stayed together in the end. I liked seeing them spend time together and I liked the way they described each other's personality traits. Sunbeam thinking Nightheart's confidence was attractive, and Nightheart thinking about how he'll miss her cleverness and courage more than anything else. I dunno, I felt pleasantly surprised.

Nightheart realising he was being unreasonable and coming to understand his family's reasons for acting the way they did, and especially the way he reconciled with Sparkpelt! They both got a chance to apologise and forgive each other (and themselves) and it was really nice to see.

Sunbeam saying Blazefire 'broke up' with her?? Warriors never uses this casual language for relationships, especially when they weren't even officially mates to begin with, it was kinda jarring to see but I liked it

THINGS I DID NOT ENJOY

Nightheart's sudden switch back to ThunderClan feels sudden and unearned. He was literally fighting with Sparkpelt and Finchlight earlier in the book and then at some point he realised he was wrong for that off screen. Also I was kind of unreasonably irritated that he failed his last task on purpose lmao

Frostpaw not telling anyone anything. Frostpaw please talk to people.

WHY DID EVERYONE FORGET ABOUT TREE??????? WHY ISN'T TREE MEDIATING??????????????

MIXED FEELINGS

Squirrelstar. While I'm happy Bramblestar is stepping down, I'm not jazzed about Squirrelstar. I like Squirrelflight, but she's been around a long time now and I want someone newer. To be honest, I'm basically waiting for the older characters to die out at this point, and if Squirrelflight's going to stick around for the next several arcs, she's going to become the next Mistystar.

Sunbeam moving to ThunderClan. While I predicted this would happen, and it's kind of fun for now, it means we now have two perspectives in ThunderClan AGAIN. I am begging warrior cats to let go of ThunderClan. Having two POV characters in the same overused clan is not as fun as they think it is. Also, Sunbeam saying 'Berryheart was right about everything' then immediately changing her mind was kinda disappointing. Let Sunbeam have a villain arc.

Since the writing team simply refuses to have Oscar meaningfully interact with most of the main cast besides Ruby and Jaune (for now, at least) smh smh, what sort of dynamic and relationships do you think Oscar would have with WBY? Pine boy deserves more justice!

Ohhhh v good questions!! Basing off their respective characters and what few interactions he has had with them, it's still tricky to say, but I'll do my best. DISCLAIMER: RG GLASSES ARE ON FOR THIS, I AM VERY SORRY. IF YOU WANTED AN UNBIASED APPROACH YOU CAME TO THE WRONG PLACE 😭

Both him and Blake are fairly quiet and more introspective members of the group. I think if they had any sort of relationship they'd probably talk to each other about their shared love of books and stories. I do think it would be fun if Blake teased him a little bit like she started doing with Ruby in v8, although Yang is doing a good job of that on her own. My guess for their dynamic is dependent on where Blake's character goes from here though, which is yet to be seen.

As for Weiss... She seems to care about him a lot! And Oscar got super happy when she agreed to go to the movies with him and Jaune. It's hard to say what their 1-on-1 dynamic will be. Honestly i picture it being a bit like Oscar's existing dynamics with Jaune or Nora after the comic relief treatment Weiss got for all of v9. But it's also hard to say, I wish I could come up with more than that. :(

Lastly Yang... honestly she's the one I have the most hopes for future interactions. We've seen so far that their dynamic is a bit goofy with Yang teasing him lots, but she cares about him a whole bunch too. Very much living up to big sister energy imo. She also seems very aware of how close him and Ruby are with how often she brings him up when talking to her sister (Ex: Yang being the one to first call Ruby when Oscar went missing in v6, asking her how Oscar felt about lying to Ironwood, emphasizing that they brought Oscar back from Salem when trying to cheer Ruby up, etc.)

I think I'd really like to see a heart to heart between Oscar and Yang in the future. Not as much as a Ruby and Oscar or Ruby and Yang conversation, but Yang expressed a lot of frustration, hurt, and confusion after Ruby snapped. She doesn't understand why her sister hasn't spoken to her or the rest of their team about her struggles... but Ruby did speak to Oscar about them at one point. We've also been given direct parallels back to back of how Yang and Oscar both approach Ruby differently about the same issue. And I think there's a lot to explore there.

As much as I would love to look at this question as exclusively about Oscar + one other person, with no exterior influences, I really can't. When I think of the canon narratives around all these characters, it really skews my read on what to expect in the future.

During v9, we see WBY being setup to be more mindful of Ruby and her struggles in the future... compared to Oscar who has always paid attention to those things. And how any dynamic that mixes those two sides together could lead to Oscar and WBY learning to take better care of their Ruby together.

Also, while we don't get a lot of other relationship focus for Oscar outside of what's absolutely necessary for the story (curse you limited budgets), it is worth noting that Oscar is very often included in team RWBY meetings/arcs where the rest of JNR is not.

On 5Miinust (+ Puuluup) and the pleasures of sticking idol pop where it (supposedly) doesn't belong.

I haven't been around much lately, y'all. Partly because my dudes have also not been around much, although ZaQ continues to post a series of videos on the ARTJAQ channel, teaching the audience about... something. I continue, in turn, to not understand Kazakh. Throw in increasing disillusionment with K-pop (I guess now we know why GFriend was so abruptly shitcanned, though the knowledge doesn't make me feel any better), a general post-October-7th discomfort with most online pop-music discussion spaces, and work to get done at home, and Tumblr just hasn't been a particularly rewarding place for me lately.

I didn't think Eurovision was going to be a rewarding place for me this year, either. And then Eesti Laul happened.

It's like some divine imp was watching and saying to themself, "You know what Jessica needs? A pop-rap group from a former Soviet colony whose members love video games and refuse to take themselves seriously and release lots of goofy content that sorely lacks English subtitles. No, another one."

To clarify: the description in the previous paragraph only refers to four of the six people making up Estonia's Eurovision entry this year. The two guys in the clip with talharpas are the respected "zombie-folk" duo Puuluup, who play world music festivals and draw their own album covers and seem like a very fun and intelligent duo. They somehow have fallen into league with 5Miinust, a four-member (previously five) group that has been around since the mid-2010s. To the best of my knowledge 5Miinust have never been accused of being Satanic and/or gay like Ninety One have, but they are either a party group, a hip-hop group, a boy band, a bunch of frat bros (see this album cover), or a very savvy business collective whose members include a former advertising specialist and a trained accountant. Or, most likely, all of the above at once.

The 5Miinust / Puuluup collaboration by itself is charming enough, and if you want to know more about how it came to pass, I direct you to Overthinking It's very good video on Estonia's entry. And "Nendest Something Something," as @sole-cuore-amore-e-droga calls it, is the best kind of fun: chaotic at first listen, carefully constructed subsequently. I don't expect it to do well in Malmö. (I think "Europapa," which is also a seemingly chaotic song that turns out to have a lot more going on than its bouncy surface would first indicate, will win overall.) And I don't really care. I'm not sure 5Miinust and Puuluup care a huge amount about the scoreboard either. They've already recorded a full album together; they seem to be having a good time making silly videos for social media. They'd be my winners even without the added bonus, which is that these guys are absolutely giving idol-pop goodness.

I mean: go watch that Eesti Laul performance again. With the exception of the bridge, each performer gets his own solo time, a classic idol-pop move. There's choreo! And the styling: everyone shirtless under a suit jacket, but each suit jacket tailored slightly differently—that is such an idol-pop live-performance look. I cannot be the only person who clocked that Korea's suit is cut the same way as Nine's for "libidO" live stages, just more conservatively.

And the deeper you get into the 5Miinust rabbit hole, the more idol-pop-esque goofiness you find. Drag performances? Yep. Live radio performances with gimmicks? Here they are stripping to "Vamos." Super-dramatic award-show performances with loads of backup dancers? Here they are at last year's Estonian Music Awards. Do you need to learn the point dance? 5Miinust and Puuluup will combine forces to teach you the point dance.

And yet, talking about either (and both) of these groups as idols is a gloriously stupid idea, because "idol pop" suggests a willingness to subjugate themselves to audience demands that neither 5Miinust or Puuluup, for all their combined marketing skill, have. Idol pop historically depends on hierarchies—performers deferring to management, and, in a different way, to their audience—and that's not how 5Miinust or Puulup work. When I wrote up a guide to who's who for /r/eurovision, I said that Päevakoer is 5Miinust's maknae, and it was a joke because I'm pretty confident no one within 5Miinust has ever cared for one second who's older and who's younger. Just the fact that two different groups with a decade between them found creative inspiration in happily treating each other as equals gives the lie to the idol-pop framing. Nobody's bowing to Marko and Ramo. The whole idea is so far from how these particular performers relate to each other as to be nonsensical.

Which means: idol-pop goodness without stifling hierarchies; idol-pop goodness by people in charge of their own careers, who post goofiness on their own terms; idol-pop goodness combined with musical experimentation born of mutual respect. YES. YES. SIGN ME THE HELL UP.

(If it doesn't go without saying at this point, I would give a lot for my new faves to somehow meet my existing faves. Ninety One might not have enough English comprehension to make the meeting work, though. I think 5Miinust's ex-member Gameboy Tetris might speak Russian; whether he wants to speak Russian would be another story.)

I got lucky, and found people also willing to enjoy the 5Miinust-and-Puuluup-as-idols ironic glee. @sole-cuore-amore-e-droga really kicked things off by making that awesome lyrics video, and from there we got a line distribution video and a logo design for our fandom (Estoners) and photocards and a fanchant and a lightstick design and a "Gangnam Style" mashup and chibi art and then more chibi art. It has been one of the highlights of my past month, being able to giggle unreservedly with strangers. I haven't been able to do that in a long time.

Eurovision happens in two weeks, and then there will inevitably be a dropoff in activity, no matter where "(nendest)..." places. Without the Eurovision framework (and the English-language content that comes with it) I suspect most Estoners will move on. I'm still going to play the album, though, and keep an eye on these guys. Any chance to expand idol pop into more humane spaces, I'm going to take, no matter how silly it seems.

When I was in my mid-twenties I dated a serial rapist. Lived with him, in fact, attended the same dojo, and we talked sometimes about marriage. I loved him very much.

He was superbly charismatic, which is how he got away with many bad things. He had a lot of friends, and a lot of defenders, because it was so difficult to believe him capable of the things he did--and because he was good at making friends. Good at bringing people together, at seeing the edges where they'd fit. He was a little goofy, came off occasionally as kind of stupid and almost always as generally harmless, and many of the people he introduced to each other will probably be friends for the rest of their lives.

It was also amusing to him, on occasion, to drive a friend or girlfriend to near-suicide. "If one of them does it, I can use that story later to make people sorry for me," he said, at the end of everything when he was finally willing to be honest with me. When he knew that no one else would believe me, and he could reveal himself plainly with no threat to himself.

In 2016, years after our horrific breakup, he took a probably miscalculated (or even uncalculated) dose of a designer psilocin prodrug without a spotter, and while under its influence he stabbed himself several dozen times. The New York Post, salacious rag that it is, suggested that his death might have been part of a "pagan ritual." I thought for some time that it had been a murder, that some family member of one of his victims had decided to take a bit of evil out of the world. But it was just him being as stupid and arrogant as he always was, and thinking, as he always did, that he was invincible.

(A mutual acquaintance said that they thought possibly he got so high he could hear his conscience for the first time in his entire life, and took the honorable way out.)

(It does not escape me that if that is the case, he still managed to do it in the nastiest, messiest, most selfish way possible, as his wife came home that evening and found him.)

I was at a weekend house party a year or so after he killed himself, and another person there didn't know that I was that Gen, the one he still talked about until he killed himself--but I knew who she was, a lover-after-me. She was openly grieving, and I gave her cupcakes and silently wished her well, and avoided all conversation of him. At the end of that party our host--who had been dancing the same conversational waltz all weekend as I had--sank tiredly into the couch beside me, rubbed their face, let out an exhausted giggle. "I'm just so glad he's dead." they said.

It's been nearly fifteen years since the breakup, and most of eight years since he died. My life is entirely transformed, though I probably am not. I'm in a lot less pain, and I take a lot less shit; it would be difficult for one such as him to prey on me now, I think. But at the core I doubt I am much different.

While he lived, his favorite thing in the world, his biggest fandom, was One Piece. He was overenthusiastic about it, easily made giddy. A sincere fanboy, in way that like so many of his other behaviors was somehow endearing.

It's very weird this week to keep being reminded of him, and know how happy he'd be to get to see it happening.

I keep remembering being at the Saturday-night dance at a big anime convention in 2007 or so, throwing ourselves gasping out the double doors to sit in the cool hallway outside the ballroom and gasp for a few minutes. We were lying on the carpet fanning each other and laughing quietly when the opening notes of a dance remix of Folder 5's "Believe" came on, and his face just lit. And we hurled ourselves to our feet and back inside to dance until we were exhausted.

All of the ads and incessant saturation of One Piece live action stuff right now isn't what I'd call triggery, not the way some other things still are, but it...aches. A little. To be reminded, again, that he could have been wonderful, and instead he was a monster, but there were still parts of him capable of childlike joy without artifice. And those parts are lost with all the rest of it.

There isn't any point to writing this. I'm tired and sad today, and should probably bake something or work on a quilt, some thing to do with my hands and remind me of my place as part of the world. We do go on, those of us who can, and I suppose that's all there is to it.

Favorite thing about them: His pure of heart, dumb of ass nature... idk! I just feel like his bombastic, friendly personality is so lovable. I was invested in him from the second I met him! He just leaves such an impact with his silly but earnest personality. I love how determined he is, how he's got these big emotions and how much he believes in Blackquill and isn't scared of him one bit even though everyone else is because he sees Blackquill's raw potential. Waaaa. It's nice. Least favorite thing about them: Beyond him tasing Blackquill, um. What they did to his character by having him get murdered off-screen before the game starts lol. I think the way they did the Phantom twist was incredibly lame and I've talked extensively about it before so I'll spare y'all and just link the posts where I've bitched about it instead. 1 | 2

I haven't thought about it in a while so my opinions may have changed a bit idk just read these KRKFNM Second post isn't mine but I did leave a fucking tag essay so there's that. I do plan on replaying Dual Destinies soon to see what I feel about the game after knowing everything I do now, though. Favorite line: idk if it's a favorite line exactly but my favorite moment with him is in Turnabout Academy where he pops out of the art room window and is like "oh it's y'all!! in justice we trust!!" and helps out Athena and Apollo while Athena excitedly greets him n Klav and Apollo are like ??? It's so cute. brOTP: Ummm him with Ema is pretty fun! I want all the detectives to be buddies, and I think that Ema would originally be so pissed off and annoyed by him, but come to appreciate his earnestness and kindness. I think once she cools off and becomes a proper forensic detective she'd mellow out and be much more open to befriending people she works with. I think they'd get along very well. I also like the headcanons where Bobby really looks up to Gumshoe, so I like their dynamic too.

I also think him and Yuty would be fun. I think Nahyuta would be annoyed by Fulbright at first like Ema, though. But Fulbright probably fills a similar environmental niche to Datz, so I think Nahyuta could deal with him eventually. I imagined this scenario (admittedly in a shippy sense-- I think Madhibright is a funny ship and kinda cute, but I don't actually ship it anymore, they're just pals) where they meet post-SOJ and thought it'd be fun. Here's that post I made. OTP: Blackbright, I guess! IDK, I don't ship as much for him as I used to, but this is still my number one. I LOVE their dynamic in DD, I love the possibilities of what a dynamic could be like post-DD had he lived, so on. They're definitely Together but it might be kind of an unlabeled grey area friendship gay thing too. I don't know KRKF but I like them a lot! It's fun. I think they're very cute. nOTP: I dunno. Who are they gonna ship him with if not Blackquill? The Phantom? I've seen cute stuff with the Phantom and him as buddies that I find interesting. I wouldn't call romantically shipping them a NOTP, it's just vaguely weird but I don't really care at all. So, none I guess. Random headcanon: He's from the South and has a Southern accent!!! I love giving characters I like Southern accents it's kind of a thing I do if I have an excuse to, lol. It's why like half the Tazmily villagers were written with accents during my Mother 3 fanfic days. I think it suits him, idk why. It's better than the goofy ass voice they gave him in DD 😭 Unpopular opinion: idk. I don't know what people think about him, aside from him being another character the AA subreddit will try to convince you just absolutely sucks. Aside from, like, I don't know, I think it's a bit off sometimes if AUs where Bobby lives that people try to put all the blame for shitty behavior towards Blackquill on the Phantom. I get why, but I think sometimes it's worth examining how his position of power could be harmful to Blackquill regardless of his pure intentions or whatever. He's a cop, after all.

I know some people are uncomfortable with the ethics of a ship with Blackquill while he's still in prison (which is why some folks will specifically only interpret Blackbright as a post-DD thing) but I'm also like. idk I think THAT'S worth examining too! By people smarter than me. I'm not doing it KRKF I just find their dynamics interesting, warts and all.

Maximilian 'Max' Goof Was Created & Killed by Disney Through Neglect & Number Go Up

max was created in 1951 for the episode Fathers Are People Too, as a plot device for goofy.

his early design is finalized and acts as a stand alone character for the singular episode.

his second appearance is in goof troop in 1992, this was the first attempt to establish him as a side character to mickey for the 90s. this secured his existence in older kids minds (read older sibs) so that their younger peers would hear about it.

here's where you probably know max from. we all felt like we knew this character & he'd been around forever! he hadn't. they just established him that well & made the goofy movie that good. bc indisputabley, the goofy movie is a fucking well made classic story of parent child bonding. certified 1995, with the target age being 5-9, the sweetspot demographic for kids cartoons

the next appearance we see max in is the direct to video sequel, an extremely goofy movie (2000). (no, im not counting the direct to home 1999 christmas special where hes somehow younger again) now, depending on your age you may be surprised there was even a sequel bc you mentally merged the two films together. and if you're one of those people? statistically blessed. the movies not that great. good moments but not great. at this point the target age group is 10 at the youngest, starting to age out of younger kid cartoons.

we've been talking about max the entire time, but let's actually talk about max. max has grown up, he's been taught by his dad, then in turn teaches his dad how to live without him & that he did ok & leaves for college. both father & son acknowledge his personhood. he goes off to live life. now he's 20 years old, working as a valet driver who also hosts some non descrip montage show that he wasn't invited to. he's not even a guest at this show. and idk about you but some of these guests read as the interns were asked to draw papers from a bowl featuring d*sney's least used licensable characters as a throwback to get people to watch the films again.

yall even remember this throwback? bc that's exactly what it was & how it read on screen. "hey, remember this guy??"

that throwback was the last time we see him on screen & likely the final time. we aged up & newer, more profitable charqcters were available to peddle onto younger audiences. so, naturally, d*sney shelfed max. but you have to admit, it's kinda funny. d*sney created this character from birth, for the sole purpose of us watching him grow, learn. growing from the character. watching how he learned enough that he could even teach his father that they'd both be ok when he left for college. his dad cried in pride of a son well raised, a son who loves his father & his community. he learns to be a good person & then gets to do absolutely nothing with his life, stuck working a min wage job w presumably a college degree. kid got to headline with powerline & now nobody knows his name. hell, they don't even know who his famous dad is. bc at least if you have famous relatives, ppl might remember you exist on some level just by association. they created this entire backstory for max, from birth, through neglect & the pursuit of profit

great episode all around, loved hearing my queen yuuki as gina, too bad we won't see much more of her til cour 4 or 5 (depending on how fast adaptation goes) but it'll be worth the wait. also, since I read all of UU from start to just some months ago, in just a couple days I had things very fresh on my mind so I noticed it easily, but it's really crazy to see how early tozuka set up seeds for future payoffs, I won't mention what exactly cause spoilers but there were 3 ones in this episode and it really is great writing and storytelling to be able to pull that off

nice and action packed episode, fit for being the end of this initial cour/arc, which we only found out about earlier this week. should be getting a new op along with the new subtitle and stuff but we'll see. we also got some lore like the full team of the ancient adventurer and that the evil organization was related to him in some way. the goal now is to find the rest of the team so that should last for 25 more eps probably but we'll see, there should still be gym stuff along the way and all that

“I’m really sorry about all that, work has just been shit this week, every day it feels like there’s something new going on,” his voice is almost a whisper, but you can still detect the sadness and regret

“I’m sorry too… work hasn’t been great for me either…”

You both just quietly vent what’s been going on at your jobs and it ends with Luz engulfing you in one of his trademark Hugs

hi ! good morning :-) or evening, whatever it is for you. at first i read this and was like 'yeah that's a sentance/concept' before i realized that maybe. just maybe. it was a drabble prompt. because i do those lol. anyways, this one made me a little feral because i saw a post idea about it earlier but i forgot who posted it (feel free to lmk if you recognize the concept), and this ended up being a little over 1k words, so !! without further rambling, enjoy !

AU: EJ stays in Salt Lake; He and Gina are neighbors; Gina and Ricky are not dating/do not have feelings for each other (oh no portbowell :') )

"Shit!" Gina whispered to herself, running out to the sidewalk just as the school bus was pulling out of the neighborhood. It wasn't her fault it had to come so early; in a couple months, when she had her license and a car, she could leave the house a little later. For now, though, adjusting to the back to school schedule was brutal, and one-too-many times of running out of the house last minute had to lead to getting ditched.

She pulled out her phone, ready to call someone; Ashlyn, maybe, or Kourtney? Gina hated asking people for favors; she was self-sufficient for in getting the bus, but she couldn't just skip school.

"Hey," A familiar voice called, and Gina looked up to see EJ jogging over. His hair looked ruffled, as if he hadn't quite finished styling it, as off-brand as that was. He was also wearing sweatpants with a baggy shirt that read Gimme A Beat in faded pink letters.

Gina wasn't sure how to feel, seeing EJ. Her ex. There wasn't any animosity there that Gina knew of, but it was still awkward. Awkward and ironic, because after all the Success School drama, EJ ended up staying. (Which, one would think--if this were a Disney movie--they would get back together immediately. But things didn't work that way sometimes.)

"Hey?" Gina asked uncertainly. "What's up?"

"I noticed you missed the bus," EJ nodded in the direction of the retreating bus. He had a hand on his hips, absent-mindedly playing with a keychain on his car keys, which he'd brought with him. "Thought maybe you'd need a ride."

"Oh," Gina started. Honestly, she was just surprised to see him up. She hadn't thought about it--okay, so she thought about it here and there--that he'd still be asleep at this time. But he was up--tired, but awake. And offering her a favor she might not get from someone else. "Yeah, okay."

"Cool," EJ smiled slightly, heading in the direction of his car, Gina following. Just like that. He even opened the door for her, making a grand sweeping gesture of it, like the goofy prince he used to be.

"So," Gina started once they were both in the car. "What are you doing up right now? I thought you could do your schoolwork whenever."

EJ had mentioned that the last time they'd talked, when they both just-so-happened to be getting the mail at the same time. EJ didn't go to the Success School, so now he was living with his mom while he worked his way through online community college. Apparently, the classes didn't even have meet-up times, something Gina was incredibly envious of. If Gina could sleep in until ten, no one would ever catch her up at 6:30.

"I can, I just like to maintain a good schedule so I'm not tempted to slack off," EJ explained, wrapping an arm around the back of Gina's seat to check behind him, backing out when the coast was clear. "When I get things done earlier, I have more time to...bask in the joys of self isolation."

Gina frowned at the thought. EJ had been in half a dozen clubs in school and had a good group of friends--and now he didn't even have college classmates. She'd have to invite him to something the drama club was doing sometime.

"I'm sorry," she said softly, looking over at his profile as he watched the road. Even now, like this, he was pretty. There was no denying that.

"Don't be," EJ shrugged. "It's an interesting lifestyle. I'm discovering the joys of polymer clay art. I got all these little tools off amazon, and I made a little cow and a smiling mushroom--"

"Okay, we have got to get you out of the house," Gina couldn't help but laugh, which prompted EJ to laugh, and it filled her with warmth at the idea that she had not had fun with EJ in a really long time.

"We?" EJ asked once the laughter faded, a smile still gracing his face.

"Yeah," Gina replied. "I mean...it's a two-person job, at least. Maybe you could join a clay art club at the senior center."

EJ gave another soft laugh, and the two sat in comfortable silence for a moment.

Then: "Gi?" EJ asked, breaking the silence.

"Hm?"

"Do you wanna know the real reason I was up?" EJ continued, nerves creeping into his voice.

Gina's brows furrowed in confusion. Being up early to do schoolwork seemed like EJ, nothing more to it. But even so. "Sure."

"I..." EJ appeared to struggle for the right phrasing. "I've been getting up early every morning on school days--and, I mean, I am working on schoolwork, but I purposely work at the coffee table by the window. I make sure you make it on the bus okay--and sometimes I go back to bed after that." He said humorously. "But I just wanted to be there, in case you missed the bus. There's been a lot of close calls, you know, you should really try to get out of the house sooner."

"Oh," Gina replied, a silence spanning across them after that. She didn't know if it was just early and she was restless, but she found her eyes stinging. When she broke up with EJ, she'd told him he was no longer the guy that was gonna be there for you. But here he was, being there. Being there every day, whether she actually needed him or not. "Eej, I...I don't know what to say...thank you..."

"Don't mention it," EJ shrugged dismissively, as if Gina was not going to be rotating this notion in her mind for at least the next few hours. "Hey, you wanna go to Starbucks? We got some time, and I've got a craving for an overpriced caramel-coffee milkshake."

Gina grinned in that same old infectious was EJ always brought out of her. "If this is what happens every time I miss the bus, I'll have to wake up late more often.”

EJ glanced over at her thoughtfully then before looking back at the road with a matching smile. "I think I'd like that."

Okay so bs4/as1 has been a bit hit and miss for me so far (I've generally been watching one Buffy episode followed by one Angel episode whenever I sit down to watch and I've not often had a double bill of hits, but also never gotten a double miss so far so it's not I'm not having a good time even the misses have some stuff I like) but I watched I Will Remember You last night and it was such a banger I loooove the Bangel tragedy and it was such a good one. I watched Pangs right before and I was thinking wow they brought back Angel for this episode (this had so much baggage there was stuff I liked in it but oof)? But it was worth it I guess to get Buffy into Angel for the following one. I kinda wish In the Dark hadn't happened though cause it kinda cheapens the Angel being human in the sun thing by having him be in the sun already just four or five episodes ago and its way better in this one. I thought it was gonna just be hallucinations for a bit when he and Buffy hooked back up, there was no way that could be allowed in the timeline even if Angel vamped up again, but resetting the clock is way better, should've realised from all the clocks they were showing. It was just a real good Angel/Buffy power hour played all the hits, doing what they do best. I ship Bangel primarily in the sense that I love to see that tragedy aspect of it, no desire to see them together long term just burn bright, fast and break each other's hearts. And since it was a heavy crossover episode Buffy and Angel can share the crown of favourite episode yet across Buffy's s4 and Angel's s1.

Spike being fully into his loser era is great I can really get behind that. The Initiative at first glance I thought this is a bit goofy dunno if I'll buy this and then Walsh was the director of it as well as Buffy's psychology lecturer and I decided yes this is just goofy enough to get behind. Riley's alright he's not really got enough meat yet to get me into him yet but the duelling secret identities thing he'll have going with Buffy should be fun, I do find it kinda funny that now that we know who they are the Initiative goons just never wear masks anymore.

I thought Wild at Heart was real good but its wild to me that this feels like the first actual episode about Oz and its about him cheating on his girlfriend, killing the person he cheated on her with and then leaving forever (there's extenuating circumstances but still), wild, also kinda sad there's no more werewolf episodes cause somehow those costumes were getting even more ropey and I was interested to see how much worse they'd get. This was also a day where I got two hits with the Bachelor Party being just a really a fun Doyle episode.

Other hits I've had Room with a Vu, great Cordy episode her insisting to the ghost that she can't scare her cause she's from Sunnydale and refusing to give up on such a good place to live was incredible, and that scene with her talking about how she wants to stop being punished great stuff, and I Fall To Pieces, psychic limb detaching surgeon was wild and unsettling, I also really enjoyed Melissa's work as the victim. Admittedly, Angel is leaning very heavy into the damsel trope now that they don't have to write a show with a female lead. Oh yeah also it does feel a bit like they're playing fast and loose with the whole sunlight thing I feel like Angel's been in sunlight a fair few times this show.

Honourable mention to Fear, Itself, it's got some good stuff but largely it suffered from me thinking its not on the level of the s1 fear episode "Nightmares" and not as fun as the s2 "Halloween", but I didn't hate it by any means just didn't quite hit. And also its not fair to it but I thought going towards the climax it was either gonna be a that the Demon didn't want to be there either (hence saying "Release me" all the time) or that it was gonna be an Anya knowing him from her demon days thing so when it got to oh the demon's just tiny while fun felt like a bit of an anticlimax to what I wanted which isn't really the episode's fault.

Now Pangs, Sense and Sensitivity and Beer Bad those were hard misses. Pangs and Sense and Sensitivity, Pangs at least felt more like a fumble (Buffy sideplot about wanting a good Thanksgiving was also fun) while Sense and Sensitivity felt more intentional with it going hard into if only lawyers didn't get in the way of us beating suspects we could catch so many more criminals. Beer Bad on the other hand just not good (I was admittedly primed for this though I had my vague recollections of that great Sarah Z video essay on that time Buffy made government propaganda, so I knew going in it was not a well received episode) "My brother in law is a warlock" and then just moving past it is a GOAT explanation behind a plot and it was at least goofy and Buffy got to beat Parker with a stick.

Other minor things, Anya's just solid gold she's in the same vague area Cordy was for most of her Buffy run time (which is fitting considering she was introduced as someone who could steal Cordy's life and is now dating her ex) where she can just show up say anything, and its a winner. And I love the infrequent appearances of Harmony just redecorating in her lair she's basically inherited. Also feel like there's not been many cold opens of just slaying Vampires, which I guess fits with the Initiative capturing a bunch of them and storing them under the university. Also also I saw there's episode coming up where Cordelia is magically pregnant and I remember that Angel does not do well when its cast get pregnant so I'm filled with a sense of looming dread.

YESSSS okay. i will remember you is a great episode for folks who ship bangel in that particular way. for me - i love what they mean for each other and the role they play in each other's lives. i think they're just a fun, dramatic, supernatural version of the classic great first love. someone you outgrow, but you'll always love somehow. and i will remember you nails that so well because like - it shows them at their best, their passion and devotion to each other, and also why that's not enough to keep them together.

i'm definitely sympathetic to angel's choice at the end, his reason for undoing things and giving buffy up, but it's precisely why they don't work for me as a long term ship. his decision to protect her by making this choice for her, by taking the memories from her is just classic angel. it's something buffy would hate if she knew. for him, it's duty and selflessness. for her it would be a betrayal. it lays bare a kind of unavoidable paternalism that infects their dynamic from the beginning.

hard agree re: spike i always like him best when he's fully being the show's resident buttmonkey. put him in silly clothes! have him be a little pathetic and snarky! make him run around with that smoking blanket pulled over his head!

glad you're having fun so far and getting through it! the initiative will remain kind of weak, but there's still some really great stuff coming up in s4. hush, this years girl, and who are you remain series highlights imo.

Combat Goggles for the ship meme?

Alrighty, Yang and Neptune aka Combat Goggles for the rwby shipping ask game.

What I think works about the ship: For real, tell me Yang wouldn't be interested in a guy because they're goofy and amusing and would kind of worship her. Because she definitely would be, and Neptune could be that kind of guy for sure. Yang has a lot of confidence and drive to push Neptune out of his comfort zone. And she's playful and teasing, but also is a lot more intuitive and caring then people give her credit for, which would pair well with the fact that in my head, Neptune is a much more sensitive person than he lets on and cares a lot about what other people think. Yang would inspire confidence in him by just effortlessly demonstrating that being yourself is cool. And for Neptune, he's a friend first and foremost through thick and thin, willing to go the extra mile for Sun, understanding why Sun does what he does, and being a quiet listening ear when Sun goes on and on about Blake, and all of that is something Yang could use in her life. Plus, I'm sorry but they just look good together.

What season I think they were best in: Season two. The show pretty heavily hinted at Neptune's attraction to her in his 'what a woman' moment and they had good chemistry during their mission together.

How I would get them together in canon: I'd legit have it be an 'after the events of the show' ship. Like, all this stuff happens with Salem, and then they're just... supposed to go on with their lives and it leaves Yang kind of reeling. Yang stays on as a Hunter despite the fact that the rest of her team doesn't (Weiss wanting to take care of her brother, Blake working on Faunus rights, and Ruby focusing on helping to rebuild the world,) and she winds up working with Neptune a lot until they kind of just fall into a partnership. I'd have Blake's work cause her and Yang to drift apart, which Yang is hurt by but she tries to be understanding, and pretty soon realizes that all that's needed to turn her and Neptune's 'partners-by-convenience, have an apartment together as friends, go out to dinner all the time because what else would they do after work' relationship into a full blown romance is just asking if he wants that too. So yeah.

How I would get them together in an AU or re-write: Okay, I'd have Neptune connect with Yang during the Vytal dance instead of basically being told to go talk to Weiss. Then after they hit it off at the Vytal dance, they decide to start dating, and Yang makes it clear she only wants something casual and Neptune has feelings for her but agrees and complies with her wishes. After the Fall of Beacon, they go their separate ways, but reconnect once Yang gets to Haven. Neptune (and probably Sun too) decide to travel with them to Atlas after Haven gets shut down, and he and Sun are eager to join Team RWBY in whatever adventures they have and mysteries they might try to solve once again. Neptune winds up paired up with Yang for quite a few missions and when the two go out dancing with Neon Katt and Flynt, they're reminded of the Vytal dance and wind up starting to date for real.

What struggles I think they’d have to work through: I mentioned Neptune's 'womanizer' ways in another Neptune post, so I don't feel like I have to rehash it here, but yeah. To be clear though, I think Yang would be one hundred percent fine with him continuing to be flirty even while they're in a relationship as she's also just a generally flirty person, but it needs to be the 'respect woman' kind of flirting and not the 'you're trying to conceal your misogyny and nobody is fooled' kind of flirting. Yang the character as she should've been wouldn't stand for even a shred of disrespecting women, thank you very much. But tbh, that's the only struggle.

Do I think they’d stay together: They'd be the on again off again of the freaking century. They'd break up and make up and break up and make up so many times that their friends can never keep track of it. Like, Ruby brings Yang 'sorry you broke up' cupcakes and is like "hey sis, you wanna watch some of your favorite movies and listen to Taylor Swift?" And Yang's like "Oh I know last week I told you Neptune left me, but this morning he called and asked me to take him back, so we're fine."

How I personally feel about this ship: Fun fact, this is one of the earliest RWBY ships that I shipped! Like many of my early RWBY ships, I no longer ship this because my own fanfics and stuff have majorly evolved, but I still think this ship is fun.

then i met you... i really like our origin story because only we could have met in such a goofy way. even before our grand reveal, just the short time we spoke outside of ren and lia, you were easy and fun to speak to and i enjoyed our little random admin talks. as we continued to talk more as ourselves outside of liju, i realized how similar we were and it felt so comforting to know that i had someone like you who i could turn to whenever i felt discouraged about anything. you were — and still are, of course — like my favorite plushie; my comfort and security. you've always been so kind, compassionate and understanding towards me and anyone who's had the pleasure of crossing paths with you. you've never made me feel childish or immature, you've always validated my feelings and actions even though some may have been questionable. you've always been encouraging and patient, and for that i'll always have such a special love for you.
