Siddharth Anand has delivered greatly on an patriotic aerial action thriller. For India's first aerial action movie, this was really good. And that's the best part, how they have captured the essence of the Indian Air Force.
Every actor did their performance well, especially Hrithik Roshan, he just knows how to portray the emotions in every situation. And Sid Anand just knows how to use the charms of Hrithik Roshan. Truly one of the best duos in Indian cinema.
Being someone who absolutely loves the Top Gun franchise, I was eager to see this genre in India & I am not disappointed at all. The aerial action scenes were done really well. Credits to Sid Anand & D-NEG for that work.
Also, the movie doesn't take a cringe & over the top take on patriotism but an emotional & heartful connection. The movie makes full use of its run time without dragging or rushing anything. Also, the movie pays the utmost respect to the IAF which they deserve.
Although some songs are good, the placement was bad. And to conclude, this was a really great movie. Great work from Sid Anand, who is always trying something new every time. Well Done!!

FIGHTER REVIEW: NOT GREAT BUT GOOD ENOUGH!
After watching the movie in the cinemas, I finally caught the movie on NETLFIX on 21st of March, and felt it was time to review this movie.
This movie has all my favourite people. Everyone knows I have been a big Hrithik Roshan fan, and in recent times I have been in love with Karan Singh Grover (KSG).
It was fun to see them together!

However, I really wish this casting happened a bit sooner. When I was at the peak of the obsession of both them. That would have been so much fun.
The movie starts off simple. But dips a little in screenplay with the extensive dinner sequence, which in my head made no sense. Fat shaming two women who were trying to have their biryani is not what I expect of a 21st century Bollywood movie on Air Force Pilots.
Later, the makers establish the bond of the Air Force Pilots while "HEER AASMANI" plays!

This sequence is effective. And I felt there was a need to have our very own DESI movie based on Air Force. Especially since they do a commendable job in keeping India safe.
Later there are a sequence of events in which Hrithik Roshan's character (Patty) is more concerned about showing his superiority; showing people down and the movie proving a point that everyone is inadequate apart from him in this team.
Not only Patty is obsessed with being arrogant and not following protocol; his whole team is about enabling him; especially KSG's character Taj. The only voice of reason in the whole movie is Anil Kapoor's character Rocky who has the guts to call a spade a spade. But that does not stop Patty from pouting and acting like a useless victim.
The movie goes on to show some more bonding sequences and some romantic scenes between Patty and Mini (Deepika); but in vain, as these two for some reason could not establish any chemistry according to me.
I did enjoy their dream song sequence though; it was a nice detour, I liked their aesthetic bodies and costumes. The audio had a nice early 2000s vibe to it which was enjoyable.
Later the movie takes a serious turn by showing the PULWAMA attack. And from here the movie became way too anti-pakistani and jingoistic.
After this the movie became dead for me, apart from the air sequences and the very aesthetic “SHER KHUL GAYE” nothing is to write home about beyond that.

What works for the movie?
Good Actors, Good looking faces, Good songs, really good background score, especially the score: VANDEMATRAM, which hits you in the feels every time it is played.
What doesn't work for the movie?
jingoism, lack of a screenplay and chemistry, Hrithik Roshan's character having no character growth whatsoever. Even by the end of the movie he doesn't take ownership for his actions; instead the movie and his character are still hell bent on proving that all mistakes are fine if you are the "best" at what you do.
Performances:
Hrithik could have done better. Anil Kapoor's character made sense and he did complete justice to his character. Deepika had nothing much to do and was wasted. Karan Singh Grover was good with whatever he was given.
Overall:
I would give this movie 3.5/5. It is watchable, and in recent time with such terrible movies coming out this one sticks out as a decent flick.

Vikram Vedha's first song Alcoholia was launched at Mumbai's biggest single screen cinema Gaiety-Galaxy in the presence of fans & directors Pushkar & Gayatri, cast members Rohit Saraf, Radhika Apte and Yogita Bihani along with producers Shibasish Sarkar from Reliance & S. Sashikanth from Y-Not Studios.
The song Alcoholia received a unanimous thumbs up from the viewers, with fans of Hrithik Roshan going berserk dancing to the hook steps.
Some fans joined hands with team Vikram Vedha and performed a surprise flash mob for Hrithik Roshan. The Superstar was overwhelmed by the gesture and joined his fans to dance with much gusto.
The cast & film team were amazed watching the song on the big screen and thoroughly enjoyed Hrithik Roshan's dance number.
Speaking about the song, Director Pushkar said, "First I wanna thank Vishal Sheykar. When we spoke to them for the first time, they immediately got it,' We know what is it exactly you want, you will get it' that was their response and Manoj Muntashir wrote the lyrics for it and we love a good drinking song in each one of our films and I think this one has shaped out really well and especially because of Ganesh, the amount of effort he put into it. It was around 2 or 3 months of rehearsals and getting the team together then practicing with Hrithik and a lot of effort has been put by the team into getting this song. It might seem easy but it's not." said Pushkar.
Gayatri added, "This is our first song in Hindi and it's a dream. We have the best dancer in the whole country dancing in our song so what more can one want. Hrithik Roshan dancing in our song, what can we ask for."
Choreographer Ganesh Hegde said, “Behind every song there is a reason and when Hrithik called me and said I have a song for you. I met the directors and realised that they are hell bent on creating a magical song. They were like really kicked and I have been working with Hrithik since a long time. We had earlier done a song It’s Magic and this time I had to create Magic on screen again with him. Thank you Gayatri ji and Pushkar ji for giving me a free hand and reliance for giving me such a big song. Thank you Vishal Shekhyar and the cast and crew. I think we did a good job.”
The song also features millennial heartthrob actor Rohit Saraf, who plays Vedha Hrithik Roshan’s brother in Vikram Vedha. Speaking about his experience of sharing the dance floor with Hrithik, Rohit said, “This was a dream come true for every actor. I remember in Abu Dhabi I found out that I’m going to do a dance with The Hrithik Roshan and then to top that it was being choreographed by Mr Ganesh Hegde. That was insane so I remember on Day 1 of the song shoot, and I got ready and I thought I’m gonna go to the sets and see The Hrithik Roshan dancing in front of me and I’m just gonna sit back and enjoy. Super excited I’m walking on set and when I reach I see take no. 1 and then the excitement has gone down a little bit. And then I see take no. 2 and it goes down a little bit more. When I went I thought I’m gonna get to dance with him and then after watching him dance I thought there’s no way I can do this. I’m so excited that I got this opportunity. Thank you Sir (Pushkar), Ma’am (Gayatri), Ganesh Sir and the entire team.”
Actress Radhika Apte was left floored watching the catchy song and said, "I just told him why am I not on this side? I was so jealous sitting there. But seriously, what a song.”

The song has a lot of steps that got me very tired while filming that we had to take a break because I was not getting it only and Ganesh Hegde being a perfectionist here, he would not leave me only. 1-2 shots were there where I told him ‘It’s done! It’s done!’ But no it was not okay for him so I had to keep going on again and again. But the song was so good I really liked the track and Vishal-Sheykhar have done an incredible job and they have liked the video of this song. They have seen it and they really liked it. For me when a music director likes something that you have expressed on screen then you feel assured that you have done something good.”

Superstar Hrithik Roshan launched the first song from his upcoming film Vikram Vedha titled Alcoholia amidst much fanfare at Gaiety-Galaxy single screen theatre. The event witnessed a housefull of fans, who cheered, hooted & organised a special dance flash mob for their idol Hrithik Roshan. Witnessing the love & cheer from his audience Hrithik Roshan reminisced about his first ever fan encounter which took place right after the release of Kaho Naa.. Pyaar Hai at Gaiety-Galaxy. Sharing his emotional connection with the cinema hall, Hrithik shared, "Gaiety-Galaxy is very special. I think around 22 years ago, when 'Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai' was released, so first-day first show I came to Gaiety and I saw my first film with the audience and when the film got finished and the light was switched on, the people recognised me and that was the first time I experience what the audience’ love and excitement is all about and how important that was to me at that time." Whether or not God exists is one perpetual conundrum, but even the most hardened atheists of this world are rarely able to disclaim the significance of fate in life. What plausible reason other than misfortune accounts for the countless failures thousands of people encounter regularly in various spheres of life despite never making a mistake of their own? None. How else can a sane person explain why some individuals are born privileged while other similar ones are forced to suffer incessantly amidst abject poverty until death relieves them of their sufferings? Cruel, you say? Well, undoubtedly so. One person’s good luck so often brings misery to someone else.
This is exactly what happens in Zoya Akhtar’s debut directorial film, ‘Luck, by Chance’ when a photograph of the protagonist Vikram Jaisingh is selected purely ‘by chance’ for the lead role in a film and that of his at least as talented (if not more) friend Abhimanyu’s is missed. One random action, and Vikram rises to glory in the magical kingdom of Bollywood! Fortunately or unfortunately, this is true of innumerable ‘Vikrams’ and ‘Abhimanyus’ in the real world. Notwithstanding the massive amounts of effort that people involved with film-making put in every day, the vital role played by ‘luck’ in the industry can hardly be ignored. And Zoya is not scared to showcase it in her very first venture. She juxtaposes Vikram’s dream ride masterfully with Sona’s nightmare in Bollywood and allows the uncomfortable truth about brutal fate to reverberate unabashedly throughout her film. It is this hard hitting honesty that makes ‘Luck by Chance’ one of the best chronicles of the Hindi film industry during recent times.

Just like her later films, here Zoya presents the audience with a vast gamut of characters that add exquisite flavours to her concoction, thereby making it all the more memorable for them. The mix includes a shrewd producer, an ageing, conceited, yester-year, her impulsive as well as ambitious daughter, an incompetent director, an egotistical superstar, a self-centered newcomer and a talented, hardworking, but exploited young actress among several others. Farhan Akhtar and Konkona Sen Sharma lead this brilliant ensemble which includes some of Bollywood’s most respected names such as the late Rishi Kapur, Dimple Kapadia, Juhi Chawla, Sanjay Kapur, Isha Sharvani and last but definitely, not the least, Hrithik Roshan.

It is this last name and the character he plays that we are going to focus upon in the present blog. Of course, the film itself deserves a complete blog but since this project started as a celebration of Hrithik’s works, we deemed it best to maintain our initial objective. Perhaps once we have completed analyzing all Hrithik’s films, we can come back to this very special one and dedicate a separate blog to it.
Hrithik plays Zafar Khan in Luck by Chance, the quintessential Bollywood superstar. Suavity, good looks, charm, talent- Zafar has everything in abundance. He is also completely human, filled with the baser human emotions of envy, guile and selfishness. It is Zafar who backs out at the last moment from the film of his mentor (Rishi Kapur) because he finds greener pastures. He does so without much concern for the massive loss that his producer might incur, the same producer who had given him footing in Bollywood. But, as Zafar points out to his secretary, he is tired of being ‘owned’ by the man. Incidentally, it is this specific moment wherein Zoya decides to portray Zafar’s softer side. Stuck at a traffic signal, Zafar finds few street urchins flocking near his luxury car and what follows is one of the most endearing scenes Bollywood has ever produced. The pure joy on the faces of the children as they see the superstar ‘up close and personal’ is heart-touching. And so is Zafar’s reaction to them! Instead of being irritated or throwing tantrums which might be expected from stereotypical stars, Zafar engages with the kids in his own way, making them happier with every little interaction. In that instant, he is as pure a human being as is possible for anyone to be. Zoya masterfully manages to reveal that Zafar is neither a monster nor an angel, only a common human being filled with both positives and negatives, through this very subtle and apparently trivial moment. The closed window of Zafar’s car which acts as a barrier between him and the children is a metaphorical representation of the class divide that prevails not only in ours but every ‘civilized’ society across the world. It is also a symbol of the boundary that separates a superstar from his common fans; a boundary that is often impossible to cross even if someone is willing to. Only a director of Zoya’s calibre can be expected to convey so many hard realities through a scene that lasts for about a minute. As flawless with his expressions as ever, Hrithik is superlative in this scene as the humane Zafar.
Talking about expressions, Luck by Chance also contained ‘Baawre’ which definitely ranks among Hrithik’s top dance performances in our list, not just because of his moves but more importantly, due to his countenance and attitude. Hrithik is phenomenal in this song and it is an out and out ‘paisa vasool’ performance. One other scene that deserves to be mentioned in the context of Hrithik’s acting is the interaction between Zafar and Karan Johar at a party during which the latter discloses to Zafar how stars are made. It is all a matter of the same old ‘luck’. A reigning star refuses to do a film and some newcomer gets a chance. Luck by Chance! Of course, whether or not he is able to utilize that opportunity depends on the individual’s talent, but destiny does come first. Hrithik’s conveyance of Zafar’s jealousy as he realizes that he has created his own competitor unwittingly is absolutely on the spot. All in all, Zafar Khan is possibly one of the most impactful extended cameos Hindi cinema has ever seen, and all thanks to Zoya and Hrithik for that.

Incidentally, Hrithik also played notable guest roles in two other films. One of them was directed by none other than Zoya’s brother Farhan. Hrithik starred as none other but Don himself in a scene with the stunning Priyanka Chopra. Well, it was the Don (Shahrukh) in Hrithik’s mask. Looking dapper in a suit, Hrithik walked right into the hearts of the audience as he twirled with Priyanka on the dance floor. Farhan was clever enough to make use of Hrithik and Priyanka’s terrific on-screen chemistry in that one scene and they sizzled together. The other film in which he did a cameo was Vikram Phadnis’s Hrudayantar. He donned Krrish’s attire once more there to give a few moments of happiness to a dying child. The scene between him and the little girl was truly gut-wrenching.
With that, we bid goodbye to our lovely friends with a promise that the break shall be a short one. Thanks for being patient with us.♥️♥️♥️♥️

A Very Merry Bollywood Romance: My Personal Favourites

I'm not going to say 'there's nothing like it' merely on account of the fact that I grew up immersed in watching hours upon hours of Bollywood fantasies, but rather because I can say with hand on heart that there's something about Indian cinema that really knows how to make you feel. I don't whether it's the oozing charisma and genuity of the actors; how passions and flavour is woven into every detail and gesture; whether it's the fact that your screen explodes with unapologetic culture and colour, or the way the music surges through you like wine through water. True, it can be ridiculously cheesy (to the point where I've even had to leave the room for cringing), but when it comes to mixing serendipity with the sensuous to equate with an experience of heart-rendering love, then honestly; nowhere but India can do finer.
This admittedly comes a little late after Valentine's day, however I was inspired to collab together some of my favourite Bollywood romances of all time (or at least the last twenty-two years) to share in the hopes of inspiring your next Netflix binge if you feel the itch to dive into something different (and better) than your usual rom-com agenda.
Khabi Khushi Khabie Gham (Through Smiles or Through Tears, 2001)

'If you want to be something in life, want to get something in life, or want to win something in life, then listen to your heart always. And if you don’t get any answer from your heart, then close your eyes; think of your mother and father's names, and see how you will reach your destiny, overcome all your hurdles. Victory will be yours. Only yours.'
 You'd be hard pressed to find anyone in India who hasn't heard of this iconic number, this being India's answer to a cult classic like our own Bridget Jones or Notting Hill. Karan Johar's infamous blockbuster is a millennial Bollywood icon, and if you don't find yourself soaked in your own tears at least five times during the three-hour duration, then I would duly recommend getting your eye-ducts checked. And your conscience.
 Khabi Khushi Khabie Gham (or KKKG as it is also affectionately known) is first on this list as it is as quintessentially Bollywood perhaps as it gets: entourages of lavish dance sequences and ornate cinematography, all the while underlined with emotional questions surrounding obligations not only to one's culture and home but moreover to one's self. It concerns the consequences of when Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan), adopted son of wealthy businessman Yash Raichand (Amitabh Bachchan), dares to forsake the perfectly selected match his father has picked for him for that of the exuberant Anjali (Kajol) from the lower-class sphere of Chandni Chowk. His choice in prioritising love over tradition and duty creates a fracture in the family dynamic over a span of ten years, this only finally being addressed when his younger brother Rohan (Hrithik Roshan) chooses to repair his broken family and reunite a dedicated mother (Jaya Bachchan) with her favourite son.
 KKKG is one of my first choices whenever introducing newcomers to Bollywood as it would be difficult to find much to complain about with it. Yes it has its cheesy moments and a lot of the humour might require some cultural know-how, yet the comedy in question is so perfectly scripted that it doesn't detriment the moments of extreme emotionality - on the contrary, it positively amplifies it. I have additionally always had a soft spot for Anjali and Rahul as their relationship understandingly matures given the circumstances of their union, especially given Rahul's decision to move their small sect of their family out of India entirely. Regardless they still remain hilariously argumentative and flirtatious the whole way through, their more traditional relationship being paralleled through the younger and more westernised dynamic between Rohan and Anjali's younger sister, Pooja (Kareena Kapoor). The film is a package deal for all the emotions and a bonanza of some of the best acting talent in the industry, the love story being not just between one man and woman but towards one's home and family.

Mohabbatein (Love Stories, 2000)

'Love is like life; it's not always easy and it does not always bring you happiness, but if we do not stop living, then why should we stop loving?'
Now, Mohabbatein has a far more lavish layer of cheese slathered across it than the predecessor on the list, but that may be more down to how the cast is comprised of a camaraderie of newcomers alongside more the more accomplished acting masters. Mohabbatein is the story of three students who each fall in love whilst studying at the prestigious all-male college Gurukul under the lense of the strict headmaster Narayan Shankar (Amitabh Bachchan) - his most iron-clad rule bizarrely being that no-one is to pursue romantic relationships whilst under his roof for risk of immediate expulsion. Whilst all hope seems lost then for these horny *ahem* love-struck adolescents, enter the charismatic and emphatically romantic music teacher Raj Malhotra (Shah Rukh Khan). His presence at first seems innocent enough in his encouragement for the boys to nurture their affections as Robin Williams encouraged his own students in the pursuit of poetry, especially as it soon comes to light that Raj's own great love, Megha (Aishwarya Rai), committed suicide when her father expelled Raj when he learned of their relationship; determined that the two were not allowed to be together. That same father then being the unyielding Narayan Shankar.
 Mohabbatein then makes for such brilliant cinema and engrossing romance as it combines all the freshness and innocence of young love with the intensity of passions that transcend the boundaries of life and death. The sense of pathos invoked by Chopra is interweaved into every detail of the piece, from music to performance; the preposterous and absurd. The confrontations between Bachchan and Khan in this piece are far more enigmatic than in KKKG given the different stakes between a father and son and the different types of love that two men can feel when grieving over the loss of the same woman. It proves one of my favourites time and again given how, for all the playfulness and somewhat ridiculous outlines in the plot, it is the eternalised love that is embodied by Raj and Megha, and the wondrous idea that not even mortality stands as a barrier between those that truly love each other, that will be hard pressed to feel like your heart might physically glow.

Hasee toh Phasee (She smiles, she's snared, 2014)

'You are the oxygen to my double hydrogen. Our chemistry flows like water.'
 This more modern film addresses far more contemporary issues than its predecessors, the complex relationship between Nikhil (Siddarth Malhotra) and Meeta (Parineeti Chopra) abandoning perhaps much of the traditional grandeur in place of what one could argue is closer to the standard quirky, slice-of-life style typical of an adolescent British rom-com. What is indisputable is that even without as much of a flair for the dramatic and the abundance of glamour, the film still radiates with a palpable sense of heart, as it invites us to explore what happens when flustered yet well-meaning Nikhil becomes saddled with looking after his fiancee, Karishma's, eccentric sister during the week before their wedding. One can't help but chuckle and squirm as we watch Nikhil's hapless attempts to pass Meeta off as a long-lost friend to his family and friends in his and Karishma's efforts to conceal her from her own family, the reasons for her freakish personality going unspoken except for the ominous pills she keeps popping on the sly.

 We soon realise the reason Meeta has been isolated from her family is due to how she chose to prioritise her academic ambitions over that of the traditional femininity and getting dolled up for the purposes of marriage and domesticity; the disappointment invested towards her paving a way for a natural connection with an equally lost Nikhil in his endless efforts to appease the incessant demands of his more materialistic fiancee. This then is what makes the film even more compelling given how it goes against the culturally ingrained stereotypes of the man managing to be the effortless, seductive hero, able to provide and fight for the woman he loves in conjunction to the beauteous and elusive heroine. Instead, it invokes a relationship about two people who feel lost in the oppression of society's expectations, the result being that despite judgemental relatives and unstable emotionality, the two are able to find something magical that can only be brought out in each other.

Pardes (Foreign Land, 1997)

'You've all mistaken me for some innocent little painting that you've framed in gold, and now you want me to hang on these walls in silence and become a part of this false decor! This isn't the dream I came to this foreign land with, is it?'
Now, this is a controversial one. Pardes is probably the most politically charged movie on this list as it is famous for being an incredibly evocative piece of anti-Western propaganda. It concerns what happens when free-spirited Ganga (Mahima Chaudhary) is handed in marriage to the son of a wealthy NRI (Non-Resident Indian), however the vastness of the difference in culture on top of the distance between India and America sees to it that the outcome of such an engagement comes to some horrific consequences. Pardes is primarily then about the clash between cultures when the innocent essence of India is dragged to and exposed within the more confident and lavish shores of America. This premise in itself may seem problematic and would understandably evoke outrage as America is intentionally built up as the criminalised empire in the face of the all-pure India, however, what the viewer must remember when watching Pardes is that it is quintessentially a story about consent and respect. It's about acknowledging the difference in cultures and adhering to ways of life you may not understand, rather than trying to overwhelm and consume that sense of 'otherness' like a tyrannical Frankenstein 'penetrating into the secrets of nature' and causing chaos for everyone. It is fair to say then that Pardes is problematic and the socio-political accuracy of the piece could be spat upon until the cows come home, but it is this sense of duality and complication that makes it so interesting.
The main romantic storyline of the film then may be more of a Trojan horse for the more significant aspects for discussion, but it is more than fair to say that the political stakes are squarely matched by the passions at play. After all, when the wholly Americanised Rajiv (Apurva Agnihotri) proves to be more than a little bit of a disappointment, it is the relationship between Ganga and his adopted brother Arjun (Shah Rukh Khan) that comes to full heart-warming fruition. Arjun's role as the mediator between Ganga and Rajiv in trying to fulfil his adopted father's wish in smoothing the match over quickly escalates to into him becoming Ganga's most trusted confidante and defender. One can recognise perhaps the outdated sense of chivalry in this - especially as the inclusion of the attempted rape scene does appear to be an excuse for tensions to culminate in a traditional, Bollywood-esque full-on fist fight. However, credit has to be duly cast to the writers as they characterise Arjun as possessing a rare sense of compassion and empathy, especially given how his proclamation of love for Ganga is based not on lust but his genuine desire to trust, revere, respect and protect. In addition to this, it is easy to admire Ganga for her perseverance in trying to navigate this foreign land, she becoming all the more engaging for her burgeoning determination without the expense of her self-respect and ingrained love for her home nation. The prioritisation of one another's welfare above their own alongside becoming embroiled in their sense of duty to tradition and family is then what makes their journey towards each other so compelling and heart-wrenching. Pardes is a love story with incredibly heavy undertones that would have to be entered with a particularly open mind, but perhaps once the offences have been fully digested, one can fully appreciate why the film is so renowned; with a love that is all at once devastating as it is wonderful and profound.  
 Devdas (2002)

'Where can I find again my lost innocence? My lost dreams? My lost childhood? What happened to my home in the shade of the trees?'
 If there was ever an answer to the intensity and literary grandeur of tragic romances the like of Romeo and Juliet or Abelard and Heloise, then Devdas slaps back with unparalleled panache. If it wasn't a love story in its own right then Devdas is indisputably an affair for the senses; Sanjay Leela Bhansali's breath-taking production instilling every scene and action with such aestheticism that the Pre-Raphaelites are, no doubt, positively quaking. The story is no doubt a tragedy, following the titular character's (Shah Rukh Khan's) debilitating descent into alcoholism following his childhood sweetheart, Paro's (Aishwarya Rai), marriage after his mother ridicules her family for being descended from prostitutes a long time back down the line of their ancestry. Ironically enough, he seeks relief in leaving his home and taking shelter with a friend who works at a brothel, his emotional deterioration subject to the fruitless effortless of the heartfelt taiwaif (courtesan) Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit).

The relationship between Dev and Paro is continuously fraught with psychological manipulation as the two try to progress with their lives whilst undeniably in love with each other, the acting on the parts of Khan and Rai being so invigorating that it would not be surprising to find yourself holding your breath whenever the two are on screen. the interactions between Khan and Dixit are additionally moving as they have a deeper understanding of one another, their relationship perhaps being all the more rueful in the sense of it being a one-sided sense of self-sacrifice as Dev continues to ruminate over a love he can never have. Indeed, though Khan is typically praised for his rigorous performance, it has been disputed that it is perhaps the talent and dynamic between Rai and Dixit in their roles as Paro and Chandramukhi - the aristocrat and the courtesan - is the actual showstopper in this magnificent piece. It was never in the original story after all that the two women should have a relationship outside their original and comparatively brief confrontation over who loves Dev more, so that fact that Bhansali chooses to instal and flesh out the friendship between these two equally fierce and magnetic women is but one of the aspects that makes this film so essential and inspiring.

Goliyon ki Rasleela Ram-Leela (A Play on Bullets: Ram-Leela, 2013)

'If hatred and pride can make a desert of the sea, then love can make flowers bloom here.'
 Let's establish this from the start -  Baz Luhrmann can choke.
This is how a real Rom-and Jules-adaption is done. As the most sultry addition to the list by far (seriously, phew), Ram-Leela admittedly does take a lot of liberties with the narrative. Nevertheless, any alterations or revisions that have been made are entirely for the better. In fact, even if you were to take the stance that Romeo and Juliet were as young and naive as they are in order to heighten the tragedy of violence and conflict, then it becomes more than reasonable to argue that Ram-Leela actually captures the essence of the play more than the stagnant Western replicas that have plagued us in the past. We still have the warring families, the star-crossed lovers and poetics on steroids, only that the narrative is enhanced by the rawness of rural Rajasthan to bring Shakespeare’s message to better fruition.  Indeed, if you, like me then, have always been able to appreciate the ideologies behind the original play, yet remained impatient with the immaturity and implausibility of the titular characters in spite of yourself, then Ram-Leela provides the perfect amendment to all those irritations. Instead, we see two leads who are far more enthralling and philosophical, the opposition between them being so devastating given how Bhansali interweaves dramatic irony with frustrating relish. It comes down to how the Rajadis and Saneras cause the original Montagues and Capulets to look embarrassingly spineless by comparison; their inconceivable prowess in being able to manipulate even their own playing on our expectations so much that it cements the romance firmly within the boundaries of tragedy.
 Indeed, we are not just treated to a brief separation between the two until the time of death, but rather the stage is reset so that Ram (Ranveer Singh) and Leela (Deepika Padukone) become the respective heads of their families and are forced to war against each other - and not entirely against their own wills either. The film encompasses a similar sense of passionate antagonisation that abounds in Devdas as well then, the irony being that the more fraught and frayed the relationship, the more your heart aches for want of the forsaken lovers to be able to make it. In truth, the film actually starts out ridiculously playfully with bounties of energy and innuendo, the fact that it is able to convincingly transition on its axis to become so emotionally straining being a credit to Bhansali's directorial ingenuity. Of course, the chemistry between the leads in Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone is near indescribable, both balancing refreshing elements of mischief and charm alongside intense vulnerability and ardour. Critics have labelled their performances as probably being still the finest of their careers (which is saying plenty, trust me), the camaraderie between the two hardly being surprising. After all, the two did just get married late last year - and on the anniversary of the film's original release date no less! So if that doesn't convince you of the quality of such a love story, then I'm afraid that you will be convinced by very little else.

 Kal Ho Naa Ho (Tomorrow might not be, 2014)

'Listen - live, be happy, smile, because who knows? Tomorrow might not be.'
 Honestly, in light of all the films that have been listed before now, with their mind-blowing cinematography, incredibly moving soundtracks and ground-breaking scopes of acting, Kal Ho Naa Ho might seem to fall a little short. It's set in the dreary din of New York, the soundtrack is more constructed towards fun and contemporary glamour, yet it is undeniable that this film is my favourite of the whole bunch. The top of my list of romantic Bops then is the story of Naina (Preity Zinta) and the many complications which taint her family; the pressure being so much that she has been rendered the constant embodiment of irritability. And even forgotten how to smile. Everything turns around when Aman (Shah Rukh Khan) enters the family's life: optimistic, charismatic and caring, he literally breathes new life into Naina's existence, so that before long she finds herself completely devoted to him in place of the unspoken affections of her closest friend, Rohit (Saif Ali Khan). What pans out is that on the verge of telling Aman she loves him however is that he tells Naina that the reason he came to New York was to repair his frayed relationship with his wife, Priya (Sonali Bendre). Unbeknownst to the bereft Naina, this is, in fact, a lie. The truth is that Priya is actually Aman's doctor and he doesn't have much time left to live.
I don't know then whether it's because the characters and scenarios are so well grounded, the dynamics and difficulties within the Kapur family are more relatable, or that the relationships between and constructions of characters are perhaps the most believable, but it's one of those films that you'll agree, once you've watched it, has an inexplicable sensibility that takes the cake every time. A lot of it does seem to be grounded in the healthy and brilliant way the love triangle is handled in the film, as any sense of complication or rivalry between Rohit and Aman is evoked as comedy rather than any serious resentment or envy. It's an incredibly unique love triangle then and this is perhaps why it has garnered so much critical respect, as the love-triangle motif is such a typical motif of Bollywood cinema (with repeatedly toxic and violent confrontations like in Pardes), that it is refreshing to see a love depicted so genuinely and platonically. It's even more heart-warming to watch as Aman does his best efforts to ensure that Naina walks with Rohit down the aisle (or the Saptapadi to be precise) all the while wielding his best façade so that she never realises that he loves her too. In fact, the affections between them are so subtle and few that the effect is paradoxically more intense, as you find yourself latching onto every fleeting sign of love between them that you can. KHNH then is another one that I recommend first and foremost, though in truth it's best not to watch it too often unless you have a few days to spare in which to emotionally recover.

 And there you have it - they may not be the best according to everyone's taste, but the romances listed above are some of the most critically acclaimed and effective Bollywood masterpieces to ever grace the silver screen. Though they may start as cliched and melodramatic, with too much dance and quirky dynamic, this is always a foil to deep-rooted passions and die-hard affections - each a romantic experience above and beyond any of your expectations.

Finally, its time for some magic! Or may be we should say 'Jadoo'.
We remember hearing first about Koi Mil.Gaya when Mr. Rakesh Roshan announced it, possibly during the Zee Cine Awards ceremony of 2001 (the year when Hrithik swept up all awards for KNPH). By the time it released, a few years had passed which was natural considering the grandeur and scale of the film. Mr. Rakesh Roshan astutely conceived of a novel idea in the form of ET meeting Forrest Gump and gave us something Hindi cinema had never seen. Let us take a moment to deeply acknowledge this man, whose razor sharp mind not only engendered such a unique concept but also gave him the vision and stamina to actually turn it into reality.

Koi Mil Gaya was undoubtedly going to be one of the most ambitious projects Bollywood had seen till then, and the greatest challenge the Roshans had yet embarked upon. It would have been no trivial feat if they had managed to be even moderately successful in such a difficult venture. Instead, they broke box office records, and passed with flying colours.
The fact that Hrithik Roshan is one of those rare actors in bollywood who has a terrific following among kids is widely acknowledged at present. However, it was probably John Abraham, who first pointed it out, some time after Koi Mil Gaya. He said that a 'Superstar' was someone who could attract children, thereby pulling entire families into the theatre and in his opinion Hrithik was the only one like that in his generation. More than a decade later, his statement still holds true. And 'Koi Mil Gaya' was where it all actually began. Although KNPH had catapulted him into stardom literally overnight, KMG was the film that began endearing Hrithik to kids. This frenzy reached a peak after Kkrish but more on that later. Hrithik literally played a child in the movie, and he did it with such perfection that kids immediately considered him as their best friend. Last time the Indian audience had seen a similar performance was years ago when the wonderful Sri Devi ji (May she rest in peace) had played the role of Reshmi in the splendid 'Sadma'. Not surprisingly, critics compared Hrithik's performance in the film with hers, and every one of them unanimously agreed that both performances were flawless.
Hrithik changed his voice, his way of speaking, his looks and his body language so much that he actually looked like a little boy. He was optimally sweet, innocent, and annoying, just like you would expect a naughty child to be. Some of his best scenes were with the ever glorious Rekha ji who played his mother in the film. Rekha Ji has often claimed that if she ever had a son, he would be like Hrithik. Offscreen, they actually share a similar relationship and probably that fuelled their amazing mother-son chemistry on screen. The other fantastic partnership in the film was between Hrithik and Preity Zinta. Rohit and Nisha were one of the most unconventional couples of Bollywood. And also, one of the cutest! ☺☺

Nonetheless, the best pair in the film was undoubtedly Rohit and Jadoo. Hindi cinema has been responsible for presenting us with a number of iconic friendship duos over the years. Mohan-Ashok, Anand-Bhaskar, Somu-Vicky, Vijay-Sher Khan, Jai-Veeru, Vijay-Ravi, Kishan-Bishan, Ram and Rahim, Amar-Prem, Munna-Cirquit constitute quite an elite club and Rohit -Jadoo definitely made it to the list.

The kids who played Rohit's mates also deserve a mention here. Hrithik surely must have had a gala time while shooting scenes with them.
However, it was the script and direction that really binded the film together. We have often seen films fail dismally despite having a stellar cast, and the reason for such failure is almost always a lacklustre script or uninspiring direction. Fortunately, Koi Mil Gaya was perfect in both these departments, as a result of which Hrithik could literally soar above every other performer that year.
A few words need to be mentioned about the music of the film although it needs no introduction. The songs were a rage then; they are equally hummable now. Sadly, present bollywood rarely makes such melodious music anymore! The good old days...Ah! But let us not lament. Instead, why do we not just relive those moments for a while? Hrithik dancing in Rohit’s character remains one of the best bits of acting he has done in his life.
Coming to the scenes! Yes, the most exciting part 😉! It is really difficult to choose favourites from a film like Koi Mil Gaya. Even so, we decided to give it a shot. Lets start with the moment when Rohit discovered that he had not been promoted with his friends. Didn't the sudden disappointment on Rohit's previously excited face make you want to go and give him a cuddle? 🥺 Also, don't even try to tell us that you did not cry when the goons broke his scooter and later hit him with the basket ball leaving him battered and bruised or when he pleaded to Lord Krishna for more strength ('Thodi shakti mujhe de do Bhagwan) 😟🥺😭😭.

And what about the scene in which he was angry and upset about Nisha not being his 'girlfriend'? Hrithik and Rejha ji in intense emotional scenes are always a treat to watch. The scene where Jadoo met Rohit and Nisha for the first time and healed Rohit's scars with his touch after that iconic hand extension moment attracted silent awe from the audience in theatres then and remains goosebump- inducing even now. No discussion about Koi Mil Gaya can ever be complete without mentioning Rohit's splendid transition. We got the Greek God on screen for a few scenes in which he generated hysteria among the audience that had been viewing him as a son or younger brother for most part of the film. What an actor! The ending was bittersweet for many. After all, Rohit did revert back to his childish self as a price for saving Jadoo's life. But, Jadoo gave him his powers back! And thank God for that. How else would he go to Singapore and meet Dr. Siddhant Arya later in his life? Our Superhero Kkrish would not have a villain to kill in his debut film! My God, worse could have happened. Kkrish would have never become a superhero if Jadoo had not given Rohit his powers back! So well done Jadoo 🤗🤗

OMG! This blog has been running over pages! Excuse us for the length 😁. But one of us did watch KMG from the first row, all the while straining neck on the first day of its release. The other one watched it comfortably the first time ( tickets were prebooked, of course) but got a sore neck after watching it from the front row a second time, and also gave the same to the entire family. However, no one complained. So, now you know what this film means to us. Thank you for your love, encouragement and support. They keep us going. Adios Amigos till the next one 😉😊

In an industry that is ruthless and strictly business-minded, longevity is a trait that’s aspired by many but claimed by JUST a few. Bobby Deol’s career has had long legs, just like his signature long locks. Bobby marks 25 years in the film industry this week. He made his debut with ‘Barsaat’ on October 6, 1995. Twenty-five years is a long time for one to take stock of his career, think of the hits, and misses, and share some unmissable anecdotes. On the personal front, Bobby Deol got married to Tanya Deol on May 30, 1996, and they have two sons- Aryaman and Dharam Deol.
In a freewheeling chat with ETimes, Bobby spoke to us about his memories of ‘Barsaat’ and his thoughts on some of his iconic hits like ‘Gupt’, ‘Soldier’ and ‘Bichoo’. Here are excerpts from our conversation.
Bobby, while shooting for ‘Barsaat’ did you ever think you would be having this conversation 25 years in the future discussing your career? “I still can’t get over the fact that I have completed 25 years in the industry. Time flies so fast. I feel it’s just yesterday that I shot for ‘Barsaat’. I still have those memories, the outdoor shoots, the friendship we shared on the sets, the kind of fun we had on sets. It was a beautiful time, it was just the beginning of my journey and I think It was the most exciting moment of my life. And yes, 25 years have passed and I am sitting here and giving interviews. It is a great feeling of achievement and I have so much more to do in my life. It just makes me work harder and harder.”
If you had to sum up your 25 years of work in just ONE word, what it would be? “Wonderful” Because I have achieved so much, I lost so much and again I am achieving, so that is life, it can’t be perfect. You have to fight the odds when the odds are against you and you have to come out as a winner. Each time you fall, you have to stand up and I think I learned this from my career.
What did you lose and what do you think you achieved, talk to me a bit about this part of your career “There was a time when I was a big star and I lost my stardom at one point. After that I decided that I wanted to get back. I wanted to be known as an actor, I wanted to be known as someone who is capable of different roles and I think it is just the beginning of that chapter in my life. Right now I am at a place where I am doing something different which people wouldn’t have imagined I could do. People are appreciating my work in my web series ‘Ashram’ and ‘Class of 83’. So I think, it’s a wonderful moment in my life and I am in a happy zone. I understand it does not last that long as I need to keep working hard to maintain it. I am not promising that every time I come up with something it will be a success as I know failures are a part of a career and we have to just stand tall and brave those moments and come out as winners.
What would you say was the turning point in your career that made you sit up and decide ‘let me give this another shot’ “I think the motivation comes from within. It is when you realise you are responsible for so many people around you. You are responsible for your kids who grow up in this world, you are responsible for the marriage, being A son to your father, mother, brother, sister, and most importantly when you decide what you want to achieve in your life, you help yourself and I wish that people never give up in their lives.”
Tell me when you made your debut with ‘Barsaat’ was there pressure, given that you come from an acting family No, there was no pressure. I never thought about it like that, that my father and brother are big stars. I never got that pressure. The pressure was always to find the right kind of work, to do the right kind of movies, to work hard. We always tend to work hard and make our father or brother feel proud, I think that is something every child goes through and even I went through the same thing and not anything else. I didn’t think about anything. I had to carve my own identity in this industry. I never thought of being someone’s son, I never thought of being someone’s brother, I always thought that I am an actor, who has to do well, who has to work hard.”
Your son Aryaman has caught everyone’s attention with his good looks, he does look a lot like you, any plans to launch him? I think as a father and an actor, I would want my kids to be an actor but I know it is not an easy industry to sustain success. It is a very difficult industry to be a part of. I will never stop my sons, I have two sons, I will never stop them from entering the industry but at the moment they are studying. My older son is doing business management and he is very inclined and very much into his studies. I think everybody should increase their knowledge so that when they eventually decide to choose their career, they have enough knowledge about the world around so that they will enjoy their profession more.
How are you as a father? Do you guide him on how to be on social media? I am not strict at all. I can’t be strict. All the bad cops in the world are mothers and fathers are the good ones. I have given all the freedom to them. Talking about social media, my son is not on social media as he is aware of what all happens on social media. You can’t be perfect on social media. He can make mistakes on social media. Every kid knows how to be on social media. I don’t have to specially guide him on that.
Your long hair has always been your signature look, was it difficult maintaining it? ” I like my long hair. I always wanted to have long hair, ‘mujhe bahut shauk tha lambe baalon ka, Iss lockdown ke wajaha se meine apne baccho ke Baal nahi katwai’. I fulfilled the dream of my growing long hair. My sons don’t like long hair they like short hair and my younger son looks similar to me. See when you are young, your hair quality is better and when you grow old the quality goes away and I love long hair but with shorter hair, you can play different characters more easily. You don’t get restricted (more easily), you only get to play certain kinds of characters but with short hair, you can play many different roles. These days films also demand shorter hair but whenever a film comes to me that demands longer hair I will grow it..
Did any of your co-stars ever make fun of your hair? All my co-stars loved my curly hair. I always wanted straight hair but everybody loved my curly hair and complimented me for my look. People would think only Bobby Deol could carry long hair. My image is such that it just looked best on me.
Dancing has never been a forte with the Deols, yet you guys have amused audiences with your peculiar dance style. How would you rate yourself as a dancer? I am not a perfect dancer. I am not someone who is perfect with moves. I am not like Hrithik Roshan or Tiger Shroff who are extremely amazing dancers. But I don’t think it is about being a perfect dancer, it is about how you enjoy the song. Even my brother is a not good dancer, but when he does the steps, people enjoy seeing him and the same thing goes for my dad, even he is not a great dancer but whenever he dances people go crazy looking at him. So it’s all about enjoying it.
In one of your interviews you said, Salman’s ‘Race’ opened up a new way for you in Bollywood Salman gave a kick-start to my career. Being a part of a Salman Khan film is always the best thing anyone can have. And I was ready to be seen by the people again as out of sight is being out of mind because if films do a successful business then many people see it. So to be seen and to be a part of the business, I did a Salman Khan film. Salman called me up and asked,”shirt utarega” and I said yes. I worked on my physique and people saw me in a different avatar. That really worked for me and I will always be thankful to him for giving me this chance.
As you said Salman Khan owns a special place in your life, describe your friendship with him. He is a humble person, down to earth. He always follows my dad a lot. He looks up to my father a lot and the way they look at life is quite similar and how they are personally with me is the same. They both have a heart of gold and talking about my father, he has inspired me so much and I have the same feeling for Salman as they both have the same personality. So yes, he is family.
Your first memory when I name the following films .. Barsaat: A dream project, the beginning of my life, my career, and the most memorable period of my career.
Soldier: The most action film ever. The most stylised film ever. My relationship with Abbas and Mustaan began with this film. I was very lucky to meet them. Really proud of my film.
Bichoo: Very cool, sleek film. Rani and my character really worked magic. Rani is a sweetheart. I used to call her ded-futiya. I remember there was this Sanjay Dutt film where he called his friend ded-futiya. My chemistry with Rani was such that I used to lovingly call her with that name. My friendship with Rani is so awesome. She used to bring tiffin from home. Her mom used to give us fish. It was a great time being on the sets of Bichoo.

Dharamveer: Oh! I just cannot forget that film. As a child, I always wanted to be an actor. One day dad came and asked me “ek role hai mere bachpan ka, tu karega?, I said “Haan karunga.”. I was surprised that my dad was asking me something like that. Dad wanted someone who has tough legs and would play his childhood so he asked me. I remember my outfit was made overnight and when I went on sets, I asked them why are they giving me a frock to wear and I was told that this is a look. I faced the camera for the first time, it was wonderful. I also went for the golden jubilee celebration of the film. I went with my uncle as my dad was busy with shooting. I got a special trophy with my name on it. So it was one of the most memorable times.
Your father is already celebrating your silver jubilee on social media, what are your plans to celebrate? No plans to celebrate as, during the time of corona, we chose to be safe. So we might do a low profile, quiet celebration. My dad is a people’s person, he keeps on communicating with people. I have not met anybody like him on this earth. He is my father but even then, I haven’t met anybody who is so humble and such a down-to-earth person and I am lucky to be his son.
If ever you think of remaking your own film ‘Soldier’, whom would you cast as a lead? Obviously, I will cast my son.
Your performance in ‘Ashram’ and in the ‘Class of 83’ is getting a lot of praise. Any special compliment that has received so far I was watching Ashram with my younger kid and he said, ‘pappa, I don’t like that pappa in Ashram. I like you.’ People are appreciating my work in Ashram. My mother’s friends are messaging her to tell that I have done a great job in Ashram. My brother’s friends are also messaging him to tell him about my work. People whom I have not spoken to in ages are messaging me and telling me about the good work. It’s great.
