Listening to music in my target language(s) always helped me a lot with pronunciation, vocabulary and use of language, so i’ve decided to share my playlists that each focus on one language!
Some of them are still under construction and don’t have a lot of songs, but they will grow, I promise!

"pipeline" aka send me recs for these languages please
❗ disclaimer: these playlists may contain different dialects that may not be mutually intelligible/may vary from the dialect that you're learning. I therefore encourage you to ask about any uncertainties. I will try my best to answer your questions or to crowdsource answers.
I also address this problem under the cut:
First of all, many thanks to everyone who has directly or indirectly contributed to this project:
@lesbianmangoes @orzamara @yibo-wang @jackisblu @malfunctioningsublime @kreideprinz-studies @holochromatic @arag0ns, @quatregats @sandushengshou @highwarlockkareena @lan-xichens @aheartfullofjolllly @sovietunions @surnudring @nonenglishsongs @kristina100000 various anons and many other people <3
I also want to address a problem I've come across while making these playlists. These topics are absolutely open for discussion, any input is appreciated:
Dialect vs. language.
This question is probably as old as linguistics. You may have wondered why I have separate playlists for Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian and German/Austrian German, but not for the Arabic dialects when the former are mostly or partly mutually intelligible, whereas the latter aren't always mutually intelligible.
One reason is that I can personally distinguish the former, or I can use tools to figure out whether a song is Bosnian or Croatian. AFAIK, there are no such tools for Arabic - there is only one 'Arabic' option in g*ogle translate, where I often paste lyrics to figure out the exact language (among other methods). Honestly, I have not found a way to solve this yet. I'd be open to making separate Arabic playlists, but atm I have no means to manage that. Same goes for Quechua.
A similar problem occurs with English and AAVE. Since I do speak English, I want to further educate myself on how to distinguish AAVE and English, if that's even possible (where does AAVE end and English start - is it more of a continuum or are there clear lines etc.). I do feel like it would be nice to have a separate AAVE playlist, but that really depends on if I actually can separate them, and I am especially interested in the opinions of Black people about whether an AAVE playlist would even be a good idea.
That said, I am always open to receiving feedback on this project. I am aware of the political dimension that the categorisation of languages has, and I want to make this project as fair as possible. Thank you so much for reading 💙
Let's spice things up a bit; ANSWER ALL OF THE QUESTIONS
oh baby, you answered m prayers lol this is gonna be long so buckle up ?
1. favourite place in your country? my hill station, because of the weather, and because i haven’t been to many places, and the ones that i have been to were extremely hot and i never want to go there again,
2. do you prefer spending your holidays in your country or travel abroad? depends on the holidays tbh. what the festivals the holidays fall near and that. i’d stay here for some, but for the ones that we don’t celebrate in my country like Halloween, i’d like to go abroad.
3. does your country have access to sea? peninsula, babey!
4. favourite dish specific for your country? chicken biryani. boy, oh boy, just thinking about it makes my mouth water. it’s that good. gosh, the flavour, the spice. the way they cook it,,,, the colours ahhhh
5. favourite song in your native language? ones made before the 60s. and the patriotic songs. there are too many to name, but two (non patriotic) ones are this and this (because they’re sad love songs and give me flyboys feels ya kno?)
6. most hated song in your native language? like, as a nation? idk. but personally, i hate, absolutely loathe any songs made after the 60s. they lack originality and creativity. all they did was rip off popular english songs, and changed the lyrics. that’s literally all they did. and they are super proud of it. i hate it. the music industry had gone to complete shit. even today they don’t know what good music is and ow to make it. they’re remixing all the old ones because they lack creativity. i hate it.
7. three words from your native language that you like the most? i don’t like any three words, because they’re not that appealing on their own (not the ones i can think of right at this moment) but rather, phrases. when you string those words and make poetry or prose. it’s really beautiful, and really poetic. perhaps the best ones are in those two songs, and others like them.
8. do you get confused with other nationalities? if so, which ones and by whom? i haven’t been in a situation like that so i can’t say.
9. which of your neighbouring countries would you like to visit most/know best? probably Russia because the ones right next to me are exactly the same in topographical, cultural and architectural respects. there’s literally nothing new to see there, so i’d like to go to Russia.
10. most enjoyable swear word in your native language? so it’s basically three: bhenchod/madarchod/chutiya. all of them mean motherfucker in their basic essence, but are used to describe people, cuss out people, call your pal, so basically, the hindi equivalent of fuck. can be used as adjectives, prepositions, verbs, nouns, whatnot. can be used individually or all together. perhaps splash one of them in a conversation to make the group giggle a bit more while telling a funny story.
11. favourite native writer/poet? the ones who wrote nationalistic literature during the freedom struggle. so, to say, i like Sarojni Naidu, and Tagore. they’re perhaps the most famous ones of the time, and i like their work.
12. what do you think about English translations of your favourite native prose/poem? i don’t have any, because they’re already written in english by the authors. i read a poem or two lying around somewhere, but the thing about hindi is that the translations don’t bear the same feelings as the originals.
13. does your country (or family) have any specific superstitions or traditions that might seem strange to outsiders? oh there are too many. too many by far. most of them are the usual black cat and others, oh, one i heard when i was in like 4th grade was that you shouldn’t go out with open wet hair at night because a spirit can get caught in em and come home with you. so that was strange. my family doesn’t have any, we’re rather realistic.
14. do you enjoy your country’s cinema and/or TV? no not in the least. you know why? because of this. i swear to fuck, the person who uploaded this compilation didn’t edit a single thing in. how do i know? because i’ve watched these on actual television. when i was young. in my neighbour’s tv.
15. a saying, joke, or hermetic meme that only people from your country will get? remember when some of you motherfuckers got offended by bitch lasagna because you lack basic understanding what a fucking joke is? you don’t know what satire is? you are the reason why people think indians have no sense of humour because you DON’T it was a fucking JOKE holy shit i’m so triggered by this
16. which stereotype about your country you hate the most and which one you somewhat agree with? haven’t heard of many stereotypes about us, but the laziest one i can think of is that we can do math and are good at science. we’re not. i’m shit at all of that. so are my 34 other classmates.
17. are you interested in your country’s history? not really, tbh. maybe the period just before independence, and some post-independence stuff, because i got dirt on those politicians and i want more of that so that i have a reasonable justification for hating politicians.
18. do you speak with a dialect of your native language? i don’t know, maybe i’m so used to it i don’t even realise lol. but i guess so.
19. do you like your country’s flag and/or emblem? what about the national anthem? YES. YES. YES. i love them. i absolutely adore them. the flag is so symbolic and so beautiful i love her (orange on top for sacrifice, white in the middle for purity, green at the bottom for prosperity, the blue circle in the middle for resolution and justice, just ahhhh). the national anthem always gives me the chills. everytime i hear it playing somewhere, or when we sing it sometimes after assembly, or during days like today (independence day) or republic day, when we finish singing the last line it just always makes me a bit emotional and proud? yeah. today i almost started crying because i love it so much.
20. which sport is The Sport in your country? Cricket. even though the national sport is hockey. no one cares about hockey :(
21. if you could send two things from your country into space, what would they be? the memers who think they’re very funny, (which they are not in the least), and the anti nationalists and separatists. i do not want them here. get lost. fuck off. shooo.
22. what makes you proud about your country? what makes you ashamed? what makes me proud, is the freedom struggle of the revolutionaries, and the progress we’re making in every field, the hospitality of the people, and the unity in diversity. what makes me ashamed is that there’s still so much corruption in the government, can’t help it, the law’s delay, gosh the people who think they’’re better than everybody else, the entertainment industry, the music industry, some of the people, most of the politicians, etc.
23. which alcoholic beverage is the favoured one in your country? bold of you to assume we have a single favourite beverage for the entire country. i think it varies from state to state. for mine i think it may be something apple related, because we have lots of apples here. the season is also coming lol and also, it’s very confusing because some states have completely banned alcohol and in some the legal drinking age is 18.
24. what other nation is joked about most often in your country? canada and ‘murica mostly because so many people immigrate there
25. would you like to come from another place, be born in another country? i’d like to be British, because i like the aesthetic and weather.
26. does your nationality get portrayed in Hollywood/American media? what do you think about the portrayal? i don’t watch many movies, but i think it’s not much/a small amount and neither do i mind nor do i care.
27. favourite national celebrity? no one. i hate all of them.
28. does your country have a lot of lakes, mountains, rivers? do you have favourites? yep!! she’s not called a subcontinent for nothing, babey! i live near the Himalayas, so i like that.
29. does your region/city have a beef with another place in your country? oooooh yes. ooooooooooh boy. with Pakistan lol. mainly because of the union territory of jammu and kashmir. because pakistan wants it, we want it, and it legally also belongs to us. there’s separatists there, anti nationalists, and there’s poverty there, so it’s easy to instigate the people against the government. there were wars fought for it, most of them ended in our favour, but the other side is still making so many ceasefire violations, it is insane. it has been years, and every other day there’s a new violation. there’s lots of unrest in the valley, which is a shame, because it is a truly beautiful place.
30. do you have people of different nationalities in your family? my uncle is British, my cousin’s husband is also a Brit. a great-grand relative of mine was also British. there are none on my mother’s side.

It’s already 7:00 pm on a Thursday night, and I’m casually scrolling through my facebook feed. A video of some old K-POP songs and K-dramas pops up on my screen. One word to describe it, nostalgia feels. It brings back lots of core memories, feeling ko senior citizen na ako pagdating sa pagiging fan. I think I’m only seven years old that time, 2004 kasi ang Full House. So, it’s been 18 years? Pero hindi pa ako totally fanatic noon, nag switch agad ako sa K-POP after Full House kasi nga nadiscover ko ‘yung group na Girls Generation, Wonder Girls, SUJU and U-KISS, around year 2007-2010 ‘yon siguro if I’m not mistaken. Kapag it's a BOP no questions asked added agad sa playlist ko and I'll definitely stan the artists.
And truth be told, habang lumalaki ako nag iiba ‘yung lifestyle ko. Pero that time hindi pa kasi ka-grabe hallyu fever noon, di pa nag flourish ang korean industry and culture nila unlike nung year 2012. I’d been a K-POP fan since about 2007-2010, but towards the end of my junior year I was starting to lose interest. On and off lang ako when I feel like it. I happened to catch BTS’ Just One Day performance on M Countdown at ang pogi lang ni Jin dun eh kaya, I was curious enough to look up some of their music.
And thank god I did.
I didn’t just “fall down the rabbit hole” immediately; it was a long process, but I think the biggest help was the combination of EXO era and the BTS universe. They haven’t been like a magic light-switch that instantly fixed every problem I have, because that’s unrealistic to expect from anything or anyone but I feel like they’ve inspired me in so many ways with their messages, that I have been given not just one but 7 incredibly encouraging voices that have without-a-doubt helped me have the will to fight my own demons.
Noon pa man kasi I had trouble with feeling overwhelmed. I don’t really deal well with a lot of people and a lot of noise around me, which is laging nangyayari ‘yun during my early years. Sa dami ng ka-dramahan ko sa buhay. I don’t know how to explain it basta I was a loner and I just want to curl into a ball and I just don’t want to talk to anyone. Gusto ko nasa bahay lang ako. I've gone through some rough situations in the past couple years, and a very traumatic ongoing event and I think that caused my anxiety to be worse than ever. And so, K-POP and K-dramas provided an escape for me. Syang tunay nga. Medyo edgy teen ako noon. Pero it gave me peace, it became my outlet. ‘Kung para sa iba ching chong lang ‘yan, at mga baklang papogi para sa’kin iba ‘yung naging impact nila sa life ko. It has become almost like a stabilizer for whenever I feel like I’m losing control or becoming really stressed...
High school was bad and College was the worst, but my mental health worsened to the point that in the past I would walk to the library of our university, sit somewhere, and list as many reasons as I could for why I shouldn’t jump off. The downside, of course, was that I really hated life at the time. I was plagued with negative thought after negative thought. BTS was essentially the only hope of my life, the only thing I ever looked forward to. I mean out of all the groups I've supported, BTS has a special place in my heart. They're different.I loved how funny they are and how much they truly seem to care for each other, and it seemed genuine instead of fan service. Their videos and compilations always made me laugh and feel happy for a while. They are crazy talented with amazing personalities to top it. Good thing I went down the rabbit hole just for them.
Even up to this day. With BTS I can zone out. I can put everything down for just a little while, weather it’s listening to their music, streaming their music videos or watching their youtube videos. It’s keeping me afloat mentally, although may negative sides din sya sa life ko pero mas lamang ‘yung positive para sa’kin. Walang exciting sa naging buhay ko noon eh, pero ‘yang mga sinasabi nilang baklang oppa na ‘yan they add more excitement in my life and give spice to my boring life. It gave me something to look forward to. Instead of my life being the same repetitive schedule every single day, I now have comebacks, new programs and new era that I can totally anticipate. Grabe ang solid ko pala talaga, ‘kung mayaman lang siguro ako puro ako merchandise, albums at nag around the world ako para umeksena lang sa bawat concert nila.
I’m just happy na nadiscover ko ang BTS.
I'm not exagerrating. It actually helped heal a part of my soul I didn’t even know needed fixing. Sometimes your happy place isn’t a physical place. My solace was art and music and with that, I was able to live life normally then. I’m doing much better now. BTS didn’t save me, but they were part of that healing process. I continue to learn from and be inspired by them; I appreciate all of their good and bad points, because it makes them seem more human like me.
The reason why I am writing this post is that I just realized how thankful I am to K-POP and BTS. It helped me significantly improve myself. As a 24 year old, it feels odd sometimes that this became my main coping mechanism but I guess life is odd sometimes.
I'm also proud that I did grew up with them. I've seen them as the nugu's and I watched them become the underdogs who paved the impossible way and do amazing things for someone like me who need access to their magic shop. I mean if you are not an ARMY like me, it will be hard for you to understand what I'm trying to say. Hahaha! All I can say is that during my HYYH era until now, I knew I never walked alone because I have BTS.
So I saw my post 10 years ago, this includes my “cheating years” but I was single those months ( June 2011 - Feb 2012 - my single months lol)
This post has been taken from the song “Real Thing by Neyo”
“See I only want you, but he needs you, stay with the real thing”
I had a past lover she was taken , she fell in love with me, I fell in love with her also, (papano ka ba naman hindi maiinlove e, apaka ganda nya potangina tapos lagi kaming magkausap, after training nagkikita kami, saka siya naman talaga unang may gusto sa akin LUH PROUD YAN? HAHAHA) I didn’t know na may jowa siya, I’ve met her best friends SO AKALA KO, okay kami.
If you’ll hear that song the lyrics goes
“And I didn't feel bad about it till right then
Had to remind her that we were just pretend
I said baby I want you,
But he needs you
Stay with the real thing
I'll never love you like he'll“
SO ALAM KO SA SARILI KO NA KAHIT NA-INLOVE NA AKO DUN SA TAO, AT MUTUAL YUNG FEELINGS NAMIN DI KO KAYANG MANIRA NG RELASYON
Isipin mo naman years na sila, tapos dumating lang ako sa buhay nila na nagkakalabuan sila, eh natuwa sa akin si ate mo girl ( at malay ko bang may jowa, honest to goodness NO BS, di ko talaga alam) di ko kayang sikmurain yun na pipiliin nya ako over her jowa that time, di kaya ng conscience ko.
Nagusap din kami na tigilan namin yung sa amin, and lalayo na ako sa kanya, which I did, kahit naging mag classmate kami sa isang subject, di ko sila ginulo. NEVER. Tawang tawa sila, naging inside joke namin HAHAHA
There was a time na nakita ko sila magkasama sa school naglalakad pabalik ng school namin, then nasa yosihan ako, across the street, alam mo yun haha may kirot sa puso ko, pero alam kong tama yun ginawa ko, then her bestfriend came out of nowhere, nagyosi, inapproach ako sabi sa akin “awwww puta, mahal mo talaga siya noh?”
I said “oo, pero alam ko naman na tama yun ginawa ko, okay na yun basta maging masaya siya”
( ILANG BESES NA AKO NAGPAPAUBAYA POTANGINA TALAGA HAHAHAHHAHA)
Nagbreak sila after ilang months, then she called me Feb 2012, then we started talking again, kaso may thing na kami ng past girlfriend ko nun, tapos nabasa nun past girlfriend ko yun conversation namin sa FB ( wala pang messenger that time HAHAHA) ayun umiyak si ate mo girl past jowa ng grabeng todo na nagkulong sa CR, alam ko na sobrang nasaktan ko siya nung mga panahon na yun. so pinili ko padin si ate mo past jowa, kahit na alam kong gustong i-continue ni ate mo girl yun naudlot sa amin ( naisip ko din kasi na, kung kaya mong gawin yun sa past jowa mo, na years kayo, what more sa akin? na baka na overwhelmed ka lang - LOL SEE MAY TRUST ISSUES NA AKO NOON PA)
Hindi na ulit kami pinagtagpo ng tadhana. HAHAHA pota.
PARANG TELESERYE/ WATTPAD SERIES TALAGA YUN LOVELIFE KO PUTA.
Actually here’s a mini part 2 about sa “stay with the real thing” ay actually ibang song na pala siya HAHA “hardest thing-98 degrees”
“We both know that I shouldn't be here
This is wrong
This was 2013. Nun kami na ni ate past jowa, nagkaron ako ng ka something, na which is taken din siya, ( as told nga these were my “gago years” ). She was pretty din kasi, a week na may something sa amin, umamin ako sa past jowa ko about my affair, kasi nga di din kaya ng conscience ko talaga.
Although pinili ako ni girl over her jowa that time, di ko siya pinili.
The lyrics goes like:
I've made up my mind
There is no turning back
She's been good to me
And she deserves better than that
I can't let you see what you mean to me
When my hands are tied and my hearts not free
LOL
Karma or God’s justice really hits you 10x back yun na lang masasabi ko.
It was just a trial pero syempre immature pa ako and very unstable, nagpapadala ako sa mga nararamdaman ko back then.
so read my PART 2 - DAY 3 BLOG sa sobrang dami kong thoughts tonight
Musarrat Nazir is a Pakistani actress from the sixties, who’s famous for her wedding and folk songs. Being one of the most admired actresses of her time and one of the first pop icons of the region, she is also known for quitting her career at its peak to start a family.
While her folk songs are still deeply rooted in Pakistani culture, her music from the era of disco seems to be forgotten. After quitting her acting career, she reemerged in the eighties with her eclectic Hindi covers of western hits, like ‘Rahen Tere Bina’ (Eye in the Sky - The Alan Parsons Project) and ‘Gale Se Laga Lo’ (Happy Together - Turtles).
The tunes of Boney M were fused into the subcontinent in 1981 when Musarrat recorded the LP ‘M3 Disco Fantasy in Hindi’ with the celebrated Indian playback singer, Mahendra Kapoor. The interesting thing about this LP was that the lyrics weren’t loosely translated into Hindi from the original songs in English. The already vibrant melodies of the greatest hits of Boney M were layered with catchy and fresh Hindi lyrics that were enjoyed across countries as whole new songs.
Musarrat followed the same trend in her next collaboration with an Indian singer, Sharon Prabhakar, ‘Chal Disco Chal’, which was released in India in 1981.
Unfortunately the massive gap between the popularity of Bollywood music and solo pop albums back in the day made these songs fade away from pop culture. These tracks are now found here and there on YouTube and other streaming platforms where her fans from India and Pakistan fondly remember the ‘good old days’ in the comments while some new listeners compare them to the originals.
So, yesterday (March 28) I've decided to uninstall my IG and Twitter and deactivated my FB so that I could focus on the whole week (March 28,2021 - April 4,2021). This is how it goesssss...
MONDAY
Today is also the start of ECQ 2.0. we had a curfew at 6PM. I am overjoyed when I heard about the curfew because that means we can go home early. But guess what? I got home at 6:30 because customers suddenly rush at our store before 6. And then we have to eat dinner. Since I'm writing tonight, no one catch us lol. But tonight it is so peaceful and quiet! I am done with my devo then I excercised and took a bath. And then while writing, I just finished writing news in Korean and going to translate it, when something comes to my mind. This aha moment came when I want to listen to IU's songs, but girllll! Her voice is too high and I can't sing her song, LOL. I have to listen and read the lyrics so that I can practice my speech. Then I realized, why don't I listen to Korean worship songs?! I opened my Spotify and saw that SuJu (I'm a fan hahah) has a worship song!!! And I got across to this Psalm 23 song (last week I memorized the chapter so I thought I could record because I know what it says). I have to remind myself that I am a kindergarten at this moment while learning Korean hehe.
This is how peaceful the night is, but before 8, power was interrupted, but thankfully it came back after 20 minutes.
TUESDAY
Day 2 naaaa.
Okay, tonight is SOL day. And your ate is late na naman pero they are still waiting, unlike naman sa 20-25mins. na late every Tuesday. Salamat curfew, nakasali pa ako sa pa-games. What I learned tonight is that thankful ako kay Lord sa life ng mga leaders ko. Sa patience na ibinigay nila sa akin so that I can grow sa faith ko kay Lord.
Just to share what am I reading now
Super big help sa akin nito. Ang dami kong natutunan.
After the training, I exercised and drank tea. Yes, drinking tea is an achievement everyday. I bought that last year pero hindi ko pa rin nauubos! Ayun na nga, tonight kasi a friend messaged me sa viber, she shared some post about dreams na nawala. So, while taking a bath, bigla kong naisip na, bakit jindi kami mag-Bible study?!! I need that also, and she needs it. I opened to her this idea. And while typing this, nag-uusap na kami sa time kung kelan namin gagawin 'yun. Yehey!
Anywaysssss, that's it. 10PM na at hindi pa ako nakakapag-aral hahaha.
WEDNESDAY
My spirit is well fed today, that's why I'm just going to share my learning today.
On our morning prayer, God reminded me that He never wastes season. All of what's happening in my life are part of His plan. And ngayon ko na lang din narerealize yun, even my bad decisions He made it for my good.
Nanuod ako ng vlog ni ToniG kanina. I am super inspired sa faith ng girl na'to. Sabi nga ni Toni na nagcocomplain tayo sa little thing in our life pero may ibang tao na matindi ang battles na pinagdadaanan.
Day 28. This book was actually given to me by my friend/officemate. Maybe that time wala talaga yung heart ko to seek God. But I was reminded that OK lang na slowly (but strongly) yung pag-journey ko sa life. Dagdagan pa ng Bible reading ko in the book of John
Grabe naman yung YOU WILL HAVE TO SUFFER. Normal naman pala sa life yun. Pero may PERO! But cheer up! daw because Jesus defeated the world. Thank you Lord for the assurance! We need this today sa gitna ng chaos ng mundo.
Lastly, on my devo another translation said sa Ecc. 10:10 'If the iron is blunt, and one does not sharpen the edge, he must use more strength, but wisdom helps one to succeed."
I was reminded na hindi ko lang dapat laging gamitin yung strength ko but ALWAYS seek wisdom from God. Kailangang ko ring galingan sa lahat ng ginagawa ko, and I must value the time that God has given me.
Kidding aside, I'm so happy meeting new people despite the pandemic. And greatest thing I learned today is that kaya siguro I'm on 'spiritual high' ( yung tipong I'm happy and filled with God's word at this time) kasi God wants to use me para sa mga kaibigan ko who are losing hope.
Hay Lord, feel me with Your wisdom and continually to speak to me.
THURSDAY
April 1. How I wish at the end of the day may magsasabi ng joke lang ang lahat. Coming home last night, I excercised agad, then I read Day 29 sa book na binabasa ko, and 2 chapters in the book of John.
Supposedly after that I'll do my personal devo. But before, nag-set pa ko ng to-list for today because our store is closed.
So my to-do list is consists of attending morning prayer, reviewing Korean and memorizing words, and playing my Kalimba. Last night, I'm planning to write some lessons rin. Didn't update here the same day (since I'm writing this on a Friday morning) because something happened.
So back before I'm going to do my devo, I checked my messenger/viber and mydays of my friends. Then I saw nga yung myday ng one of my ates in church. I PM'd her, ate ano ibig sabihin nun? Because she said "You will be miss." Although sa totoo lang alam ko na yung ibig sabihin nun but I have this in denial stage pa na, hindi ko maintindihan pero naiintindihan ko, that kind of thing. I activated my FB just to confirm, and even called her. And yes, it is really true.
Last Saturday, just want to remind myself na, Hebrews 12 kept on popping in my minds. It's says there na therefore we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses.... Naisip ko lang siya nun because of the people around me na, oo nga Lord, I look up to them also kasi nakikita how You worked and still working in their life, and because of their faith to You mas nag-hohope din ako at mas lumalakas. Then I remembered a friend dear to who passed away early, na still one of the heartbreaks ko, I still remember that I dreamed of her the night before she died and waking up from the text messages na wala na siya. Of course I'm sad, but looking at her life and seeing her faith to God despite she's been gone through in life na masasabi ko na, she's one of the great clouds of witnesses in my life pala.
Even yung mga kulit moments nila. I can't imagine the grief of those people that are close to him. And, as I mention earlier, I activated my FB and upon scrolling a former officemate just passed away rin, I was shocked, that time nagsi-sink sa akin na Lord hindi ko alam talaga what will happen to me, kung kelan Niyo ba ako kukunin?
What I said to Lee last night (we've talked for 4hrs, 3:30AM na ako natulog) na gusto ko kapag ako namatay masasabi niyo na, "Ay yan si Bevz nagawa niya yung purpose niya dito" and they would be comforted to the fact na I'm with God, and I'm home.
FRIDAY
Since 3:30 na ako nakatulog kagabi, I still set an alarm na 5:30 to attend MP. Napatay ko pala yung alarm ko and bigla na lang akong nagising ng quarter to 5. After prayer, Bishop spoke.haaaayyyy 😭😭😭😭😭😢💔💔💔💔💔💔💔. (No words)

Michael V (AKA “Bitoy”)’s song Hindi Ako Bakla, is a rather interesting take on LGBTQ+ pride. Although about 14 years old (as it was released in 2006), Bitoy’s representation of gays and gay pride in the video is not far from how gays are currently being portrayed and represented in today’s Philippine society and media. Let’s talk about the messages in the video along with the different signs and symbols that helped amplify these messages to its viewers.
1. The nature of forced masculinity
It’s no surprise that the idea of being in the LGBTQ+ community is something that is generally frowned upon, especially by our elders. This is often dealt with by parents (especially fathers) via attempting to “toughen up” their sons. The general disapproval on top of the parents’ attempts to “fix'' their children induce a kind of fear wherein the son mans up in the presence of his father by walking and talking in a more manly fashion.
The symbols:
The deep beginning
We can observe that the video starts off with a funky tune and a deep singing voice accompanied by stiff dance movements. These, accompanied by lyrics expressing disappointment and offense over being called “bakla” is a good representation of their attempt to keep their masculine front.
2. The growing confidence of the once fearful community
The symbols:
The change in the dance movements and the singer’s pitch
The change in the singers tone is very noticeable after the first chorus as both the singer and the backup dancers seem to start doing softer, more flowy movements and Bitoy begins to sing at a slightly higher pitch. This gradual transition is representative of their steady resistance to the masculine norms forced upon them in the past.
The change from standard Filipino lyrics to gay lingo
Below are sample verses from the first half of the song (top) and the second half of the song (bottom)
There is a noticeable difference in the manner of speaking and language used between the two with one being more lively and carefree than the other. Moreover, this also suggests the things one learns as they slowly gain confidence in their community and how it is eventually incorporated in the way they present themselves.
The quote at the end of the video
As a final punchline, the video ends with the quote “Ako? Bakla? Halleeerr!!!”. The term “Bakla'' has always been used as an insult in their community. The quote, however, shows how the gay community has managed to take it and own it. The confidence that their community has gained over time allowed them to wear the once derogatory term as a crown.
3. Embracing one’s true sexuality
The whole music video serves as one big metaphor for the process of coming to terms with one’s sexuality, which starts off with being in denial and ends with acceptance. The changes in the pitch, the outfits, the dance moves, and the language used in the lyrics is not there for mere comedic effect, for these changes signifies the stages of embracing one’s true sexuality that was always there and lingering in the background.
The symbols:
Removal of clothes
The quick removal of clothes in 1:33 and 2:54 in the music video signifies the stripping away of one’s masculinity, which is represented by the suit, to show their true skin. In Filipino, hindi na sila nagbabalatkayo, wherein pagbabalatkayo is often said to those who are still closeted. This quick removal also sends a message that once one is stripped away of something that is holding them back, it will become easier to show who and what they are made of since the change of outfits happened after these frames.
The background lights
Throughout the video, there are mostly two scenes: the bright scenes which have blue and pink background lights, in which the colors often represent masculinity and femininity, respectively, and the dark scenes which only have the pink background lights. The bright scene may signify the day wherein one has to pick between the two colors to show who they are, at least by the society’s standards, whereas it is clear that when everything turns dark, they choose pink - symbolizing the Filipino expression lalaki sa umaga pero babae sa gabi.
The word “Echos” at the beginning
Despite the obvious masculinity that was shown in the beginning of the music video, a gay word, echos, was said before Bitoy started singing, implying that despite showing masculinity and “being a man” from earlier times, the gayness still came first. This is also suggests that there are those who already know that they are gay right from the start, but because of the heteronormative society, they were forced to act masculine.
The pink spark and the pink flame
At the beginning of the video, it is seen that there is some pink spark in his hand when he said the word “echos”, again, signifying that the gayness came first before the masculine act that was done to hide one’s true sexuality. Eventually, this spark becomes a flame as he said the word “ching” in the end, which symbolizes the acceptance of one’s true sexuality resulting to a fire that empowers and fuels one's drive to unapologetically show who they really are. This flame also signifies the light that they found within themselves after being in the dark for so long.
4. Gays in the Philippines are flamboyant and comedic
The iconic gay figures to arise on the Filipino media industry are usually in the likes of Vice Ganda, Awra, Juliana , and Chokoleit (as shown in the photos below) who are all known for their flamboyant personalities and comedic presence. Bitoy and his representation of the classic gay is no exception.
The symbols:
The atmosphere of the video
The very nature of the video exudes a comic relief aura from the onset with the words “Based on a true story” along with the funky beat and light hearted vibe and lyrics, the music video was not intended to be a heavy, serious take on the gays. It had meant to show them and the bubbly, confident personality that the people know and love which is further represented by the girly jumping and giggling at the end of the video.
The costume changes
The costume changes in the video (especially the red outfit at the end) only further amplified the comedic aura. The cropped suit top and the red outfit are representative of the loud, unique, flamboyant fashion sense that the Filipino gays are quite known for.
