The Lovebirds (2020)

The Covid-19 Pandemic might’ve been favorable for The Lovebirds. You’re not going out and paying the price of a movie ticket x 2 for you and your date to see it as was originally planned. Instead, you’re catching it at home. It’s a mostly effective comedy that for the price of… 0$ (kinda) is a pleasant way to kill time.

Jibran (Kaumail Nanjiani) and Leilani (Issa Rae) are arguing on their way to a party when they witness a mustached man (Paul Sparks) murder a cyclist. Believing the police will pin them as the murderers, the couple decides to exonerate themselves by solving the crime.

The material given to Nanjiani and Rae is not that strong. While it’s funny to see the two bicker about the kind of inconsequential topics that bother only couples who have been in a strained relationship for years, it doesn’t take long before they become annoying. No matter how crazy their situation gets, they just keep talking and arguing and talking and arguing. You want something heavy to fall on one of their heads so they’ll shut up. Even just a few minutes of silence would be sweet. It’s too bad. Together, they’re so good. Both performers play off each other effortlessly. You instantly believe them as a couple and the moments of them at their happiest make you want to see them patch things up… but this would also mean a lot of the two of them talking and that, you could do without.

Rae and Nanjiani are both fully committed to their parts, delivering lines that confirm these characters are more than just overwhelmed by the murder they’ve witnessed, they’re stupid. That’d be fine if the movie was smart. When they’re forced to interrogate or lie on the fly to get the answers they need, these two dummies can’t get anything right. When the people around them acknowledge this, you’re in stitches. When they talk nonsense and no one bats an eye, it makes you wonder if their stupidity is intentional or not. Towards the film's end, things just stop making sense; as if everyone looked at the clock and said “well we’ve had some laughs so let’s just wrap it up quick”. There are several jokes that miss but overall the film works so there was no need to rush out.

We’ve seen both Rae and Nanjiani excel when placed in straightforward romances and struggle in comedies but it's always been clear they could excel in both genres if they had the right script. The Lovebirds is a big missed opportunity because they’re so good together. Enough you kind of wouldn’t mind someone taking a second shot at this scenario. The moments that work are that good. Cine: Closet Monster (2015)

A los nueve años, el pequeño Oscar Madly (Jack Fulton interpreta al personaje en su etapa infantil y Connor Jessup en la adolescente) atraviesa dos situaciones demoledoras, traumáticas: el divorcio de sus padres (Joanne Kelly y Aaron Abrams) y el atestiguar un acto de odio inenarrable hacia un joven gay al que poco le faltó para culminar en tragedia. Al menos tiene a Buffy, un hámster con la voz de Isabella Rosellini y que es, a su vez, su única compañía y una suerte de representación de su ser interno. 

Diez años más tarde, Oscar es un joven que vive con su padre alcohólico y sueña con desarrollar una carrera en el maquillaje para proyectos cinematográficos de fantasía, terror y ciencia ficción. Para sus trabajos recibe la ayuda, a modo de modelo, de su amiga Gemma (Sofia Banzhaf).

Más allá de la escuela, su compleja vida familiar y su sueño, Oscar es empleado en una tienda mayorista de artículos de construcción, adonde conoce a Wilder (Aliocha Schneider), un joven con quien entabla una relación que no puede definir si se trata de amistad o de deseo. El trauma que le generó la visión de ese chico que ha quedado parapléjico por un violento grupo de adolescentes  aparecerá para replantearse sus propios miedos e incluso su sexualidad.

Escrita y dirigida por Stephen Dunn, esta producción canadiense se ha erigido por derecho propio como una de esas pequeñas joyas del subgénero “coming of age” que nos ha regalado la segunda década del siglo XXI.

up until literally right now i thot ur icon was chilton from hannibal and i just clicked on it to realize it is very much not. anyways.

It’s not but Chilton was 500% my favourite character and I love Raúl. ❤ So that was a likely enough guess! I never finished Hannibal because the horror elements started to stress me out in the bad way (even though I watch a lot of intense stuff) but I loved the first two seasons.

He logs on automatically, never letting his emotions getting in the way of what he's supposed to be doing here. Coming into work is a pleasure to serve his country, and there's no other reason for him to be pleased to arrive. Every day, he comes in, greets his superiors and his coworkers just alike, and sets about his day like any other agent of the FBI. There is nothing special about himself or his subject of work, but there is something strange about his focus objective today: Steven Lim is not usually online on his laptop on this hour.

Steven Lim runs a small catering company out of the east side, and he does his work with the prettiest smile. Well. A pleased smile. He doesn't think it's pretty, because thinking his objective is pretty is against protocol, he's sure (even though he's read over the protocol a hundred times and never found that rule). The point is, Steven Lim is not meant to be on his laptop at 8:07 am; he's meant to be on his way to work. He needs to log into Steven's webcam - something could be wrong. He doesn't know what to do with what's actually there: no Steven, but flowers, and a note that says

"Happy Valentine's, FBI Guy."

and he just doesn't know what to do with that.

Code 8 (2019)

Code 8 creates such an interesting world it’s a shame it's explored through a largely routine story. Still, what it does well and for its potential should sequels happen, it’s worth checking out. It's something to throw in your snooty friend's face when he complains about “all superhero movies being the same”.

In an alternate world, people with superhuman abilities proved essential during the early 20th century. Today, their unique abilities have been largely replaced by machines. Those with powers are prejudiced against and face unemployment. An addictive drug called Psyke is made from the spinal fluid of Powers - some willing participants, others victims. Connor Reed (Robbie Amell), a 26-year-old who can control electricity is looking for a way to pay for his mother’s chemotherapy. When he is approached by criminal Garrett (Stephen Amell), Connor decides to go against his better judgment and take his offer.

This take on the superhero genre contains numerous smart allegories. As Connor and his similarly-powered friends are unregistered, they spend their mornings waiting in a parking lot to see who will drive up and offer them work. At that moment, they’re illegal immigrants just looking to pay their bills. The fact that they can’t get work because of something they were born with, and that they’re disproportionally targeted by the police is an issue people of color face worldwide. You don’t need a degree to see that the Psyke problem and the Powers’ unemployment feed each other. You could relate this issue to what's happening in the real-world as well. The damage the unregistered Powered can do, makes you think of gun control. On a more granular level, the character of Nia (Kyla Kane) - she has the ability to heal - introduces some thought-provoking concepts. You could lengthily discuss the police's robotic enforcers and what they symbolize. And plenty more. It’s a standard-length movie but there’s so much going on it could easily be the basis of a television series. If not, Marvel Studios should recruit Jeff Chan (who created the short film this one is based on) and Chris Pare to introduce the X-Men to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These parallels to real-world issues are what make Mutants relatable, not stories like Dark Phoenix or Apocalypse.

With this sturdy foundation, it’s too bad the rest is a standard heist/crime story. There’s some razzle-dazzle in the well-executed special effects sequences but the innovation stops with the setting. Even the characters - with a few exceptions - are stock and that goes double for the police. Aaron Abrams' Agent Davis has terrible dialogue. The character is a cartoon. Sung Kang as his partner, Agent Park, is more restrained but anytime the police arrive, you wince - and not because they're closing in on Connor.

Code 8 blends several genres and mostly, it’s successful at it. The crime story is where it’s weakest but this doesn’t sink the ship. It merely means you get something good instead of great or special. (August 1, 2020)
