For me it's the fact that Thomas finds it more important to love Varian while Varian finds it more important to protect Thomas. It's about how Thomas is keeping himself open and vulnerable while Varian is closed up and wary. He wants to keep everyone safe and he feels that even though he'll never be able to do enough, he can do this for Thomas. He doesn't let himself love for fear of disapproval and it makes it so much more important when he finally does come out of his shell- and so much more heartbreaking when he leaves Marseille.
