I'm watching the Public School arc, and one of the "drudges" gives the student he's serving extravagent treats because "Redmond deserves delicious things." Of cource Maurice is selfishly making other students do the work for him.

But I'm convinced Bunny tried to do the same thing for Raffles when they were in school...only they turned out much less appetizing, with lumpy icing and cakes that don't quite match the shape of any pan in the kitchens. But Raffles claims that they are to die for.

I graduated from college last month with a degree in philosophy and a degree in english literature. It’s been two months, more or less, since I turned in my last papers (a 15 pager on AJ Ayer’s Emotivism and a summary of the Extended Mind Theory advanced by Clark and Chalmers), and I’m living at my parents in the Washingtonian suburbs. I’m unemployed.

I spend each day in more or less the same fashion. I wake up around 7 or 8, take an antidepressant and a stimulant along with breakfast, and then settle into whatever material I’m going to be reading and focusing on by 9. I read something significant that I want to understand, for about an hour, then spend an hour completing exercises in my logic textbook. After I’ve done that, I write for about an hour. I eat lunch, exercise for two hours using the weight set in the garage, and then relax for the rest of the day, preparing dinner for my family, watching inane things on youtube, and idly refreshing my social media accounts in anticipation of some new change taking place in the life of a person that I haven’t seen or spoken to in years. Of course, nothing new does happen.

My friends have sent me texts. My friends alex, alec, josh, will, eli... they’ve all tried to get in touch. But I’ve completely lost the will to respond to any of their queries for information. I lack the motivation to respond to their messages, more or less completely. I feel ambivalent about having friends right now.

With this routine, in Sammamish, where no one, more or less, in the world, that I used to know now knows what I’m doing and where I’ve been, I’ve vanished. I’m no one now, which is freeing and depressing. Uplifting and constricting. I feel that I have all the time in the world to pursue knowledge in physics, philosophy, psychology, literature... All of the things that interest me. But I keep asking myself, to what end? Am I going to be able to tell anyone anything of these things that I’m learning? A lesson that I learn over and over again, that seems to be implicit in all of the branches of knowledge I’ve studied, is that a certain element of the world seems to defy all rationality, and that only sensory experience and action can lead to an unreserved participation in the external world.

If I die alone, having not written anything, nor communicated what I thought about to anyone else on this planet, then wasn’t it all for nothing? The learning that I committed myself to? What use is intellect without bravery? Let’s say, even theoretically, that I manage to discover a new form of logic, or I deduce from known principles the hidden mechanisms of reality... Will it matter if I can’t fight for my beliefs, and stamp them on the minds of others? And what is this stamping? Isn’t it better to just live without such lofty and abstract aspirations? Why even use words like aspiration and stamping? 

What if I were to go back to school and study computer science, move to Redmond and implement cybersecurity software for grocery store server systems, marry a woman I meet through an online group for bouldering, play board games once a week at Card Kingdom, and slowly and methodically, with consistent and normalized pleasure, watch all of the content available to me through a netflix or an HBO subscription? This seems to be the lifestyle of many people that live in the greater Seattle area, and I don’t think its irrational. It certainly doesn’t have a negative effect on the world. If there’s any critique I have against it, it’s that it’s expected, predictable, and secures my place as another faceless advancer of the greater agenda of powers that already are. It’s respectable. It’s normal. And it’s not necessarily easy to live this way. It’s a privileged life, and it could be mine, if I wanted it.

But I’m so mired already in these meta-ethical concerns that I can’t see how I’d make it towards acting. I’m sickled o’er with a pale cast of thought... trying to envision every pathway, and not seeing one.

Am I being too intellectual? Is there a point where pure intellectualism is pointless? Has the evolution of the pre-frontal cortex gone too far and cannibalized all other functional elements of the human being in order to further its own advancement towards a dead-end?

Toes Spacers, anyone?

Less pain through better mechanics?

We have been using toe separators for various foot problems like hallux valgus, hammer toes and flexor dominance/extensor weakness. Our reasoning is that through changing the angle of attachment of the muscle, you alter the mechanical advantage of that muscle and help it to work more efficiently. This seems implied in the literature with respect to foot orthoses (1-3) but we could not find any data regarding toe separators. Toe separators DO seem to reduce pain and increase function (4-6). Perhaps this is through better biomechanics, mechanical deformation, proprioceptive changes, or most likely a combination of all these factors and more.  We think clinical results speak volumes. It is nice to see more data coming out on these easy to implement clinical tools.

Iraj looked at the empty bowl. He looked at Vex’s face. Then he moved a game piece and said, “How unfortunate.” 

Under Mahin’s contemptuous stare, Vex felt obligated to add, “I told him it was for my master.” 

“How thoughtful,” Iraj said. “It was not for me, actually, but I appreciate your attempt to obtain the soup.”

Vex blinked at him. “If it was not for you, then why send me for soup?”

“It was for you,” Iraj explained sweetly. “I am dining with friends tonight. What a dreadful shame that cook was so rude!”

       It was the only thing to do, really,since I couldn’t chase any leads. And since food was the best substitute forplant magic outside the Land, I loaded up and then gave myself a physical. Mybroken ribs were practically healed and my side barely had a scar. Nothing toshow I had almost died ten days ago. Though I still wasn’t ready to tackle anynew healings, the last of the magical burnout was gone.

       I didn’t think I’d sleep, but dinner hitme as well as two bottles of Sablinian whiskey and a lot less painfully. I wokeup around midmorning feeling downright refreshed. After eating the leftoverpotatoes, I even felt equal to Hatchett’s chaos-ridden orders.
