For @sterekdrabbles!  January 5th’s prompt was keen, rabbit, cake, and with a prompt like that, I had to make Stiles a werebunny!  XD
Also on AO3.
**********
It was the time of year when all unmated of-age omegas presented alphas or betas they were interested in with presents to show that the omegas could take care of them.  As an alpha, Derek had received many presents from interested omegas and one obnoxiously persistent alpha.  But the present he was most keen on was the beautifully decorated cake from the 18-year-old wererabbit with the adorable nose, moles all over his visible skin, and the most tantalizing scent.
Most people wouldn’t picture a rabbit and a wolf together, but Derek thought that he and Stiles were a perfect match.

For @sterekdrabbles!  I definitely needed a break after being both an artist and a writer for the Sterek Artist Seduction Screw, but I’m finally back to doing Sterek Drabbles!  January 12′s prompt was thread, wine, car!
Also on AO3.
**********
The last time Stiles had spoken to Derek a few days ago, Derek had told him that Stiles couldn’t possibly want a relationship with him, that Derek would ruin Stiles’ life just like with his family and Paige.
Well, Stiles might not be old enough to drink wine, but he was nineteen and old enough to make his own decisions.  And Stiles wanted an idiot werewolf who was far too self-sacrificing for his own good.
He stormed past Derek’s fancy car and over to the elevator.  He had a massive thread of thoughts to unleash on Derek.
(They totally worked!)

Here is my late gift for @reallysmartladymariecurie for the @911giftexchange!  Marie liked Buddie, Christopher, and telenovelas, so I had the three of them watching telenovelas together!  With a bonus ficlet, also on AO3.
**********
Buck sat on the couch at the Diaz apartment with his two favorite boys watching another telenovela.  Thanks to that bartending stint years ago, Buck did know some Spanish and was able to follow somewhat, but his Spanish had greatly improved, especially thanks to Eddie.
Christopher sat in between Buck and Eddie, holding a bowl of popcorn with a big grin on his face, greatly amused by the action on screen.  Eddie was amused as well.  Every so often, he’d look over at Buck with a smirk.
Buck had been a little confused the first time he’d gone over to the Diaz’s and saw them watching a telenovela.  Eddie had explained that it was a good way for Christopher to learn more Spanish.  But after several years with Eddie and Christopher in his life, finally getting together with Eddie in the last year, Buck had a feeling that Eddie had been picking up some things from the telenovelas as well.
As they watched the heroine argue with her boyfriend and then faint dramatically, Buck was reminded of Eddie’s behavior when they had done that treasure hunt, or how Eddie had behaved when Buck had been together with Taylor, or how Eddie had said he didn’t like drama, yet he was amused by the bride and bridesmaid.
Yeah, Eddie might not think so, but that man did love drama and he had plenty of his own dramatic moments.  Buck had to laugh.
Eddie looked over at Buck again.  “What’s so funny?” he asked.
“Nothing, Eds.”
Buck wondered if one day, Eddie would dramatically faint, too, for some ridiculous reason.  He couldn’t help but laugh even harder.  But then he could sweep Eddie off his feet…
“Buck,” Christopher tugged on his sleeve, “you’re gonna miss all the drama!”
No, Buck thought, there was plenty of drama, both on and off the screen, and he was going to enjoy every moment.

For @sterekdrabbles!  January 7th’s prompt was next, dislike, need, and I wanted Derek to yell out “Next!” after being flirted with by Stiles!  =3
Also on AO3.
**********
Derek didn’t dislike the guy with all the moles who came into his coffee shop every weekday morning, ordering a caramel frappe with extra caramel and extra whip, but he certainly tested Derek with his not necessarily unwelcome flirting.
As Derek handed the mysterious “Stiles” his cold, caramel-laden beverage, the man took it and, while maintaining eye contact with Derek, swirled his tongue around the whipped cream and drew the large dollop into his mouth.  “Sweet, but what I really need is a date with someone ever sweeter!” he drawled with a wink.
“Next!” Derek shouted in a strangled voice.

My #1 post of 2022
For @sterekdrabbles!  Another year, another attempt at finishing drabbles, though I do plan to try to do the rest of 2021′s drabbles, too...  ^^;;  January 3rd’s prompt was vein, cruel, squeak, and my first thought was getting a shot, but I’d written a similar drabble already.  Finally, I settled on wolf Derek!
Also on AO3.
**********
Stiles had been walking through the preserve toward the Hale house.  But the preserve was silent, without the usual sounds from the animals living there.  That was definitely a suspicious sign for nearby danger, and Stiles wanted his blood to stay in his veins, thank you very much.
Suddenly, he was knocked over and a pair of red eyes appeared in his vision.  Stiles let out a startled squeak.  The fact that his throat wasn’t being torn out meant that it was only Derek, greeting him in his favorite way.
“You’re cruel,” Stiles grumbled.
The wolf licked him in response.

You always hand over the good things first; here is my laughter, here is my confidence, here is the part of me I think is cute and worth loving. Buck makes a small noise. “Have you tried kissing someone?”
Eddie’s head snaps towards him. “I’m sorry, what?”
“True love’s kiss. It works in, like, all the Disney movies.” He pauses. “And the Hallmark ones.”
Eddie shakes his head. He can’t think of anyone other than Buck he would kiss, and he can’t imagine that would go over well.
“I can help… if you want.”
or eddie gets stuck in the strangest time loop he has ever heard of
don’t even ask me what this fic is. i do not know what it is other than it is an extremely late @911giftexchange for @adventuresofprettyboyandthekid. it certainly is. something so i hope you enjoy! this was also inspired by this incredible fic by @hmslusitania so please go read that!
1
Eddie wasn't having any of this. None of...whatever this is.
This, of course, being Hen's insistence on having their holiday party directly after their Christmas Eve shift so they all got to see midnight together. Christopher was having fun and was incredibly overjoyed at the chance to stay up past his bedtime, but Eddie was too tired to properly enjoy the party.
It was fun to watch the rest of his team and their families be merry from his spot on the couch, nursing some sort of drink that Karen had pressed into his hand with a grin and desperately trying to keep his eyes from closing.
Maybe waiting until the night before to wrap all of Christopher’s presents wasn’t the best idea. It had him staying up late before a very early shift.
Buck sits on the seat next to Eddie, the couch dipping with the extra weight.
“You okay?” Buck asks, almost a whisper.
Eddie nods and replies at the same volume, “I wrapped all of Chris’ gifts last night and that took forever, so I didn’t really get a lot of sleep.”
“Maybe you shouldn’t do all your gift wrapping so last minute,” Buck offers the sound advice that Eddie had been pondering himself, and Eddie would really truly consider it if there weren’t… outside factors.
“It’s mainly that I don’t know how to wrap. I’m really bad at it, which I know you know because you make fun of me for it all the time.”
Buck laughs gently. “Yeah, you are really bad.”
“You know, normally that’s the point in the conversation where the other person says ‘oh, you aren’t that bad!’ or something.”
Buck laughs again. “Do you need me to validate your poor wrapping skills?” And maybe Eddie feels a little bit like a toddler when he nods, but he was too tired to care. “Aww, it’s okay. You’ll get better one day.”
Eddie shuts his eyes and hides them in the crook of his elbow, trying to block out any of the light. “Thank you.”
“Anytime.”
He looks over at Buck and the Christmas hat he is wearing and the only thought that comes to mind is pretty. Buck was always pretty, but mixed with Eddie’s exhaustion and the holiday atmosphere, Eddie was really seeing it right then.
It takes a great amount of effort, but he moves his head from the back of the couch to Buck’s shoulder, allowing himself one deep breath in. Buck smelled like sandalwood and promises.
“You should wear Christmas hats more often,” he mumbles into Buck’s shirt as his eyes shutter again, only slightly aware of the words coming out of his mouth.
Buck’s breath hitches beneath Eddie’s forehead. “Why’s that?” Buck asks, voice low.
“Just ‘cause.”
He isn’t sure how long Buck sits next to him in silence or how long he is able to keep himself awake, but it can’t be long because there’s a voice murmuring in his ear about laying down and then he’s horizontal and then he’s really out for good.
Christopher was going to flame him for falling asleep so early.
2
An alarm was blaring somewhere around Eddie’s left ear, and it took everything in him to muster the willpower to swing his arm out from under his pillow to shut the alarm off. He must have forgotten to turn his alarm off yesterday, but the bright date glaring at him from his phone screen told an entirely different story.
December 24th. It was Christmas Eve morning again.

buddie (1k) (t) (read it on ao3)
Happy @911giftexchange to @b99tgplhtgawmf1sh!! So, fun story with this one. I originally wrote a completely different fic for you, but it ended up turning out kind of sad, which just really didn't feel like the right move for this exchange. Thus, the below was born! Incidentally, I'll still be positing the other fic later today, so if you want to read it and think of it as a second gift, feel free! Anyway, I really hope you like this, and hope you have a wonderful new year!
Secret relationships, Buck has realized, are really fucking hot.
Which is inconvenient, considering who, exactly, he and Eddie are hiding from. Because touching Eddie is addictive, and even though he’s less than two feet away, Buck can’t reach out. It’s maddening.
His only solace is that clearly, Eddie thinks so too.
Despite their agreed upon no funny business at work rule, Eddie’s brushed up against him no fewer than fifteen times this morning, and yes, Buck’s counting.
At any rate, it’s not altogether surprising when, after returning from their third call of the day, Eddie grabs Buck’s wrist and, as subtle as he can, pulls him into a supply closet.
“Hi,” Buck says, laughing breathlessly.
“Hi yourself,” Eddie replies, light but with an undercurrent of tension.
“I thought we said we weren’t doing this at work,” Buck grins, biting his lip. His fingers twist in the material of Eddie’s shirt and pull.
“Doing what?” Eddie says, undoing the button closest to Buck’s collar. “I’m just… making sure you weren’t injured on that last call.”
“Mm,” Buck says, slipping his hands beneath Eddie’s shirt to feel his warm skin. “That elevator rescue was pretty dangerous.”
Eddie pops another button. “Need to make sure that harness didn’t cause any bruising.”
“Wouldn’t want that,” Buck murmurs. He leans forward and nuzzles at the bolt of Eddie’s jaw. He wants to bite, but if he’s going to leave a mark it can’t be visible.
The last of his buttons goes, and suddenly Eddie’s hands are all over him, sliding across his chest and down his sides. Eddie leans into him, mouthing over a bruise on his collarbone that’s decidedly not from firefighting. Buck pulls Eddie flush against him and–
The door opens.
Fuck.
“I, uh… I can explain?” Buck says pasting on the most winning smile he can manage.
Bobby sighs, and yeah, fair, because the explanation is pretty obvious. Buck’s shirt is open and Eddie is pressed against him, face tucked into Buck’s neck, and Buck knows enough (read: too much) about Bobby’s sex life to know that he knows exactly what’s happening here.
“Please don’t,” Bobby says, looking towards the ceiling. “Both of you, my office, ten minutes.”
The door closes and Buck sags against the wall.
“Tell me that didn’t just happen,” Eddie groans, the words muffled against Buck’s collarbone.
Buck huffs a nervous laugh. “Wish I could,” he says. He presses a soft kiss to Eddie’s temple.
“I’m sorry,” Eddie says, “This is my fault, I-”
“Stop,” Buck says, squeezing Eddie’s waist. “They were going to find out eventually.”
Eddie pulls back, face flaming red. It’s a color Buck’s never seen on him before, and under any other circumstance, he’s pretty sure he’d like it. “Not like this!” he hisses.
“It’s going to be okay,” Buck says. And it will, probably. He thinks. Hopes.
“What if they separate us?” Eddie asks, biting his lip.
Buck takes Eddie’s jaw gently in his hands. “Then we fight,” he says, surprised by the conviction in his own voice. “We go to the union, or– or to the chief himself, I don’t care. It’s my job to have your back, no one’s taking that away from us.”
Eddie swallows and nods. “I really love you, you know that?” he says, looking Buck in the eye and smiling.
Buck feels his own smile grow in return. “I really love you, too.”
“Come on,” Eddie sighs, quickly re-buttoning Buck’s shirt. “Time to face the music.”
///
They emerge from the closet, not bothering to hide that they were in there together. If the rest of the station doesn’t already know, they will soon. Each step towards Bobby’s office feels like a step towards their execution. And yeah, Buck meant it when he said they’d fight. But he really, really doesn’t want to. He and Bobby have been on opposing sides before, and he doesn’t like it.
As if sensing his train of thought, Eddie grabs his hand and squeezes.
Whatever happens, this time he’s got Eddie. Buck takes a breath and steels himself. He opens the door and they step into Bobby’s office together.
“Sit down,” Bobby says, indicating the two chairs in front of his desk.
Nervousness vibrates through Buck’s body, but he does what he’s told. Eddie sits as well, maintaining his hold on Buck’s hand.
“Before you say anything–” Eddie starts. His posture is ramrod straight, a surefire way to tell he’s nervous.
Bobby holds up a hand. “No, you two are going to listen to me.”
Buck bites his lip and casts a nervous glance at Eddie.
“As your friend,” Bobby says, a little fondness leaking into his tone, “I’m happy for you. For both of you.”
A little tension bleeds from Buck’s shoulders.
“As your boss, though, you should have told me. I need to know, when we’re in the field, that you’re both still capable of being professional. How long has this been going on?”
“A month,” Eddie answers truthfully.
Bobby sighs again. “You both have a lot of paperwork to sign,” he says.
“Wait,” Buck says, leaning forward. “You’re not– we’re not being separated?”
Bobby’s expression changes into something amused. “You’re aware that Katy and Jack on B shift are engaged, no?”
Eddie’s mouth drops open.
“I– no!” Buck splutters. “Are you telling me we could have been making out in the station this entire time?” Eddie kicks him under the desk
Bobby’s eyes widen and he rapidly shakes his head. “Absolutely not, Buck,” he says firmly, using what Buck likes to think of as his dad-voice.
“Right, no, of course not,” Buck says sheepishly. “But–”
“As long as you don’t give me a reason to, I won’t reassign either of you.”
“Thank you,” Eddie says, a little tremulously.
“Now get out of here,” Bobby says, and yeah, his voice is definitely fond now. “I’ll have the paperwork ready for you at the end of your shift.”
Buck stands, pulling Eddie up with him. “Thanks, Bobby,” he says earnestly, turning to leave.
“Oh, and by the way,” Bobby says, as they reach the door, “Athena and I will be expecting you both for dinner very soon.”
Buck grins and Eddie nods. “You got it, Cap,” they say in unison.

We’ll heal and the sun will rise
Four months after breaking up, TK and Carlos run into one another and it is revealed that Carlos hadn't told his family that they had gone their separate ways. Now invited to Christmas, TK and Carlos make a deal to pretend that they are still dating for the sake of Christmas not being ruined. But the two of them discover that maybe the spark between them may not be completely lost.
Or Another Hallmark Christmas AU.
For @iboatedhere for @911giftexchange! Happy Holidays, Rae. I really hope you enjoy this. 💛🎄
A very special thank you to @pragmaticoptimist34 for reading things over and being an absolutely wonderful support through all of my breakdowns.
[15k words]
--
“You’re late.”
TK is barely able to push the door of the studio open, his one hand holding a tray with two coffees on it and a bag of pastries, his other hand holding onto his camera bag. As he steps through the door, allowing it to close behind him, he turns to throw a glare in the direction of Paul.
TK walks to his own desk, setting everything down on the top before he plucks one of the holiday decorated to-go cups from the tray and grabs one of the pastries out of the bag. “You sent me to get coffee, remember? This is entirely your fault.”
Paul chuckles, taking both of the items from TK and setting them down on his desk. “That’s because I am nothing without my morning coffee. It’s okay, Mrs. Vega isn’t even here yet for the meeting. You didn’t forget about that, did you? Because I sent you four reminders.”
“Of course I didn’t forget.”
It hadn’t been a lie, his entire being had been taken over with nervous energy of meeting with Tommy Vega. She has been one of the best magazine editors in Austin for years now and she was giving TK and Paul a chance of having a Christmas themed spread in one of her magazines. It was huge and he’s not sure he was ready for it. Paul, of course, had convinced him multiple times that he was good enough and that Tommy would be lucky to have his work in her magazine.
Paul must notice his silence and he clears his throat, effectively grabbing TK’s attention. “You’ve got this, alright? Don’t think about anything else except getting that spread. You take good photos, TK.”
TK raises an eyebrow. “Only good?”
Paul rolls his eyes and proceeds to throw a balled up piece of paper at TK. “Quit being an ass.”
“Um, hello?”

Missing Piece
-summary-
Chris has big plans for New Year's, ones Eddie would like to avoid, kind of like his feelings for his best friend.
rated: g
read on ao3
Eddie waited for the other end to connect, pacing around his kitchen as he did so.
There wasn’t much time before he needed to leave to pick up Chris from his sleepover, and he’d already been putting this conversation on hold for too long.
As the all too familiar voicemail message rang out through his ears, Eddie sighed, though the ridiculous message made him smile every time.
This is Buck! If you’re hearing this, that means I’m busy being a badass firefighter or a badass uncle…or uh, hanging out with my favorite little buddy.
It was the last part that always got to Eddie, Buck not knowing how to refer to Christopher, even though they’d practically been co-parenting him for the last few years, Eddie officially making Buck Christopher’s legal guardian if anything ever happened to him; for all intents and purposes, they were a family—just not quite in the way Eddie yearned for.
Eddie clicked the end button before he could leave any words he might later regret, pocketing his phone and grabbing for his keys.
He kept his eyes focused on the road, though he continuously looked out of his peripherals, hoping the adorable picture of Buck and Chris eating pancakes would appear over his screen, signaling his best friend was calling; it didn’t.
Chris was all smiles as he greeted his dad, the two hugging each other tightly, Eddie thanking his classmates’ parents once more.
“Hey bud, you have fun?”
“Can we go tonight, please?”
Of course, the first thing out of his son’s mouth would be the thing that Eddie had been trying to avoid, especially since he hadn’t been able to get ahold of Buck.
“Um, let’s talk about it when we get home mijo.”
Chris sighed, though he got into his seat, Eddie making sure he was buckled before moving to the driver’s side and taking off.
He never wanted to disappointment his son, hated the way it made him feel, but Eddie wasn’t sure he was ready for this, not Christopher, but Eddie himself.
Looking in the rearview mirror, Eddie could see Chris’ arms were crossed, the boy looking out the window, clearly trying to avoid his dad’s gaze. Eddie sighed to himself, gearing to come up with some lame excuse when that all too familiar picture popped up on his screen, Chris instantly recognizing the ringtone.
As he clicked accept, Chris excitedly cheered aloud.
“Buck!”
Buck’s laughter filled the air, his voice warming Eddie wholly.
“Hey buddy, how was your sleepover?”
For the next several minutes, it was as if Eddie wasn’t even there, Buck and Chris talking all around the other; Eddie didn’t mind.
Focusing on the road and their cheery voices, Eddie almost forgot why he’d called Buck to begin with, almost.
“Uh Eds, you um, you called?”
He could’ve easily lied, said that it was a butt dial or something…. technology was always out to get him.
“Yea, I uh—”
Why was this so hard?
Oh right, because Eddie had left the 118 and they’d barely talked since, not to mention Eddie may or may not be repressing some old fears—he did not panic, ok?
“I just um….”
Before he could muster up the courage to get the rest of the words out, Christopher took over.
“Bucky! You should come with us tonight!”
Thankfully they were at a red light, because Eddie then whipped his head around, glaring at his son, his voice a harsh whisper.
“Chris! I said we would discuss that at home.”
Chris only shrugged, Eddie having no idea where to go from there; he only turned back around when he remembered they weren’t quite alone, Buck’s voice echoing throughout the truck.
“Uh, come with you where?”
If the light hadn’t turned green, Eddie would’ve slumped his head against the steering wheel, maybe even banged into it a few times for good measure.
“Chris, he um, he wants to go to that New Year’s Eve show, but uh, you probably already have plans and—”
“I’m free.”
Great.
Christopher squealed with delight, the sound making Eddie feel slightly less guilty.
“What time should I come over?”
Chris began to recite the times, much like any kid who committed their favorite commercials to memory; Eddie was only grateful he didn’t have to do much of the talking.
“Ok, I’ll see you about seven then.”
Chris and Buck said their goodbyes as Eddie pulled into the driveway, grateful to be home.
“Eds?
“…yea?”
There was a pause, Buck hesitating, though in the end he seemed to change his mind.
“See you soon.”
“Yea, see you when you get here.”
~
When they got inside, Chris beelined for his new Lego set, the one Buck had gotten him for Christmas, no doubt eager to show his Buck all the progress he’d made since the last time he’d shown him.
Eddie was once again left alone with his thoughts, wandering around the house aimlessly, cleaning things that didn’t need cleaning as he went.
The new year always brought a lot of thoughts, but especially this year; Eddie wasn’t sure if he could handle anymore change.
As the clock clicked closer to seven, Eddie busied himself with helping Chris get ready, moving to do the same for himself after.
Promptly at seven, there was a knock on the door, Eddie’s gut wrenching just a little; when had Buck stopped using his key?
Eddie rubbed his palms against his jeans before pulling the door open, Buck’s smile bright as ever, dimming slightly on the edges as their eyes met; yea, what could go wrong tonight?
They stood there awkwardly for a moment, neither of them knowing how to greet each other, Chris thankfully popping up behind Eddie to take over.
Buck offered to drive, but Eddie waved him off, insisting this was their treat, when in reality he needed the distraction, something to keep him focused.
And so, the three of them piled into the truck, Eddie trying not to think about the somewhat lengthy drive they had ahead of them, Buck sitting all too close, Christopher beaming brightly in the backseat.
Eddie turned up the radio, hoping to drown out some of the silence, grateful when Buck and Christopher quietly bean to hum along. He hadn’t realized how much his leg was bouncing up and down until Buck’s hand came to rest over it, Eddie stilling immediately; these rolls were usually reversed.
As their eyes met, Buck looked him over curiously, removing his hand shortly after; Eddie felt anxious all over again, though for a completely different reason this time.
When they finally pulled into the parking lot, Eddie couldn’t tell if he was ready to get out of his truck to avoid the tension inside, or stay in his truck to avoid his fears of what was to come. In the end, he got out, following closely behind his boys as they went, letting them guide the way.
There were vendors and people all around, music blasting through the air as they went. Everyone had on headbands or necklaces, all lined with 2022 or the words Happy New Year. It didn’t take long before Chris was begging for a set of his own, the three of them waiting in the long line to get their own 2022 attire.
After they were all decked out, they stopped to get some food, the three of them sharing a plate of nachos, followed by churros for all of them; at least there was one good thing about the night.
They wandered around after, eventually running into Hen and Karen, plus Denny and Nia; they really made such an adorable family.
“Hey boys, why don’t you join us?”
Hen smiled to them brightly, Karen patting the blanket they were currently spread out on.
Chris was quick to join them, Eddie lingering awkwardly, watching as Buck quickly got distracted with the kids, the four of them making funny faces; he was so in love with this man that it physically pained him sometimes.
Eddie finally settled after a bit—meaning he uncrossed his arms and plastered a smile over his face—the others playing some board games Hen and Karen had brought along.
With midnight fast approaching now, the kids were tuckering out, Eddie becoming all the more anxious.
Hen looked over to Eddie, then to Buck who was watching him intently; she needed to put them both out of their misery.
“Why don’t you guys go watch the show? Christopher can hang out with us.”
Chris seemed content to do just so, already comfortably sprawled on the blanket.
Eddie had no idea how to answer, wanting to flee the event altogether. It took Buck nudging him with his elbow to bring Eddie back to the present, Eddie offering him a half smile in turn. They both thanked Hen and Karen, each of them ruffling Chris’ curls before wandering off.
They walked side by side, shoulders and hands bumping every so often with their close proximity; it was Buck who finally broke the silence.
“So, are you going to tell me why you really invited me, because I know things have been uh, weird since you left, but this feels—different.”
Yes, it is different, because I announced I was leaving and we haven’t talked about it since.
“Technically Chris invited you.”
“Eddie.”
Eddie sighed, coming to a stop, Buck following suit.
“I just—I didn’t want to come here tonight, but I didn’t know how to tell Chris no, so I uh, I invited you.”
Buck furrowed his brows, not quite believing Eddie’s story.
“Why uh-why didn’t you want to come here tonight?”
There it was, the question Eddie had been avoiding all night, and pretty much since the moment Chris had asked him.
He shrugged his shoulders lamely, not looking up to meet those piercing blues.
A soft touch was pressed under his chin as Buck used his hand to lift Eddie’s head, their eyes meeting automatically.
“Eds talk to me. You know, you know you can tell me anything…right?”
Eddie read the unsaid words there—like about you leaving the team, me.
“I just—I thought I could handle it.”
“Handle what?”
Handle not having your back every day, handle shit on my own, handle the fact that you’ll never love me the way I love you.
“Eds, I’m sorry that we haven’t—talked, that I, that I haven’t really been around, but—”
Eddie put his hand out between them, motioning for Buck to stop.
“Buck it’s not—”
He couldn’t lie, because that was part of his problem, just not the current one.”
As the announcer came over the loudspeaker, announcing the show was just minutes away, Eddie’s heart began to race, the words he’d been holding onto finally spilling from his mouth.
“I’m afraid of the fireworks, ok?!”
Buck didn’t laugh, didn’t tell Eddie he was being irrational, just simply pulled Eddie into his arms, hugging him tightly.
“Eddie I—I wish you would’ve told me sooner.”
Yea, me too Buck, me too.
“We can leave now if you want. Just let me grab Chris and—”
Eddie shook his head, pulling away from Buck slightly.
“No, no I don’t—I just didn’t want to be here alone” without you.
Buck gave him a soft smile, reaching out to squeeze his forearm.
“Then you won’t be. I’ve got your back, remember?”
Eddie could only nod, not wanting to let his emotions overtake him.
They made their way toward where the fireworks show would be happening, neither of them needing to be too close with their height; sometimes it had its advantages.
While they stood and waited, Eddie couldn’t help but to shift closer to Buck, the man not seeming to mind in the slightest.
“I’m usually good about—”
“About hiding your feelings? Yea, I know.”
Alright, that was fair.
“Yea, I uh—after everything this year I just didn’t think I could handle fireworks, as lame as that sounds.”
Buck turned to fully meet him then, his voice sincere.
“Eddie, there’s nothing lame about your fears, especially with everything you’ve been through.”
Eddie pulled in his bottom lip, biting at it, nodding his head in agreement, even if he wasn’t quite on the same page as Buck yet.
“What can I do to help?”
After thinking about it for a minute, Eddie didn’t say anything, simply reached his hand out to link it with Bucks’. Buck didn’t say anything in turn, though he squeezed their fingers, instantly calming Eddie; you he thought, you’re all I need.
They stood hand in hand, Eddie trying not to wince as the announcer declared it was time. Midnight was only ten minutes away now, Eddie anxiously squeezing Buck’s hand.
When Buck tugged him closer, Eddie couldn’t help but to look over at his best friend, not taking his eyes off the man he loved, not even when the first boom erupted into the air.
Buck was looking straight ahead, all the beautiful colors reflected in his eyes, Eddie unable to look away, which is why Bucks’ voice startled him, Eddie smiling sheepishly.
“You know, I dunno why you invited me to watch the fireworks with you, when all you’re going to watch is me.”
“Nothing shines brighter than you.”
Buck snorted, though he ducked his head in a shy smile, Eddie letting his head fall against Bucks’ shoulder; God this man made him such a sap.
As Eddie lifted his head, Buck was staring right back, those blues glistening in the night light. The crowd around them began to count down from ten, neither of them looking away, blue holding brown.
With every number their heads drifted closer, their lips brushing together just as midnight rang out. It wasn’t like the fireworks erupting in the sky, or the loud cheers around them, but something more, almost as if the world around them ceased to exist.
Their kisses started slow, soft even, Bucks hands eventually moving to cup Eddie’s cheeks while Eddie moved his own to Bucks’ hips, pulling the man impossibly closer. When they finally pulled apart, they were still close enough to breathe each other’s air, Eddie already dizzy with want.
“Happy New Year Eds.”
“Happy New Year Ev.”
They came together for another searing kiss, the two of them smiling into it. Eddie reached his thumb up to brush over Buck’s lips, leaning to rest their heads together.
“C’mon, let’s take our son home.”
With their hands linked once more, they made their way through the crowd, oblivious to anyone around them. Hen and Karen only gave them warm smiles, the two giving their thanks before wrapping Chris in their arms, carrying the sleepy boy back to the truck.
Their hands met again as they took their seats, Eddie’s body calming once more. There was much to be discussed, but for now, they had each other, and that was enough. With Buck by his side, nothing could bring him down; they would always be there to lift each other up or bring them back down.
The new year always brought change, ones Eddie usually feared, though not this time; sometimes change was good. After all, change is what brought them together to begin with, Eddie never trusting anyone more to have his back; it was a new year indeed, one Eddie intended to make the most of.

our bodies, possessed by light

TK tries to get comfortable, ignoring the burning behind his eyes and the uncertainty ahead, absently squeezing Carlos’ hand with his taped fingers, paying no mind to the radiating pain that shoots up his arm over the action. His attention has been stolen, anyway, by an all-too-familiar black-and-white scene filling up the tiny TV screen. His heartbeat is pulsing in his ears as he shakily drops the remote onto the table. George tells Mary he’ll give her the moon, and TK feels understood down in his marrow. Just say the word, and I’ll throw a lasso around it and pull it down. (Or, their car versus some black ice sure can dampen the holiday spirit.)
my @911giftexchange gift for @moviegeek03! this was so fun to write, and i hope you enjoy, brit! have a very happy holiday season <3
The first thing TK registers when he steps outside is the cold.
It's that nose-burning, take-your-breath-away kind of cold, where it settles quickly and bites at your exposed skin, and it's been like this since the temperature dipped into the freezing range the first night of Hannukah. Ever since the devastating storm a couple of years ago, they'd thought they'd seen it all when it came to less-than-pleasant and far-from-usual Texas winter weather. And yet, here they are, slammed with every possible scenario in their already busy schedules of toy drives and plans for shifts at a local food bank, resulting in shifts so long that the line between days off and days on has been blurred for weeks.
He blinks a few times to get used to the harsh sunlight against the frosty roads and sidewalks, his breath puffing out into a cloud in front of him as he zips up his jacket, still feeling grateful to have 126 stitched into the fabric once more. It's a bit of a rookie mistake, but his distraction means he isn't watching his step, and he nearly slips on a patch of ice, just managing to catch himself against the side of the ambulance.
TK thinks he's steady before he takes another step forward and falls onto his ass.
Nancy, always appearing in moments like these, smothers a snort behind her mitten-clad hands—they're bright red and hand-knit and she'll wear them whenever they aren't on a call—before helping him up to his feet.
"I thought you were used to this," Nancy teases, recalling those days so long ago when he and Paul admittedly got a little too confident in their ability to handle the cold and all its woes. He shivers at the memories—himself, half-dead and hypothermic; Paul, trapped and alone for hours—and rolls his eyes at his partner.
"I promised Carlos to never test the universe by saying stuff like that again," TK says, dusting off the back of his pants before hopping into the driver's seat.
