Buck has chased romantic love conceptually his whole life but he’s never actually made the first move. Abby called him. Ali called him. Taylor kissed him. Natalia asked him out.

Initially I was thinking of it as growth until I realized that. He needs to make the first move because he NEVER. HAS. They make the first move. He begs them to stay and chases their affections. That’s how it would go.

But he always waited for them to come to him. Not in the relaxed way he thinks, though. In an emotional risk-aversion way. And for him, usually, risk avoidance would be good. 

But this is different. He settles. He always has. For whoever will take him. So much so that he has never made the first move on anyone, even Abby. Some he likes more than others but, as we saw with Taylor, once he actually “achieves” that love, he doesn’t know what to do with himself when faced with the question he never thought he’d have to answer of “do I love her”.

He needs to make the first move. Which is actually the opposite of chasing. Because he has waited for whoever wants him to come and then tried to keep them. To go for someone himself is to say “I don’t know if you’re even attracted to me but I believe myself lovable enough to have a shot”. Making the first move might get you somewhere great or it might get you an immediate rejection. Buck isn’t rejected often. He’s been left, but not rejected, because he waits for them to come to him because he has thought that there are few enough that that’s the only way he’ll find them - letting them filter themselves out. Because if your odds are truly slim enough, hitting on people is a total waste of time. So to make the first move would actually be to believe himself lovable.
