Three things.

I came close to doubting my sanity because SO many food and I got ptsd flashbacks from the time I recapped 200+ dishes of Royal Feast lol. And Tumblr has a 10 pics limit per post and I don't feel like making these two eps more than two posts, so I resorted to cutting the food scenes into videos.

To my further frustration the HD video I downloaded of this ep had terrible hard subs and I ain't gonna redownload it so please turn a blind eye, I'll type the proper translation anyway and there's the Chinese subs.

The food is incorporated in the backstory of the son of Chenghua emperor (featured in ep 11), and his Empress. He was famous for being one of the two monogamous emperors of China.

Beginning of Spring (Lichun)- Spring Rolls

Other Traditions: Horse racing, wear Nao'e headdresses.

Spring Rolls originated in Eastern Jin. Thinly rolled wheat dough is served with vegetables to be wrapped in it. The emperors of Ming would award the officials with this spring platter to welcome the spring.

Shangyuan (lantern) Festival in Lichun - Yuanxiao

Make balls using crushed peanuts, black sesame, sugar, milk. Dampen and coat in glutinous rice flour and put in boiling water. The detailed process of making it is recorded in "Zhuozhongzhi" of Ming Dynasty. A Song dynasty verse says, "Culinary officer searched for new flavor.

Kitchen maid marvelled at the new technique.

Bit of a shorter week as we won't be having a stream on Saturday morning! Excitingly though we'll be playing a new cozy puzzle game on Sunday!

Mahjong Night will be in Mahjong Soul this week assuming we don't run into maintenance. Anyone wanting to participate in friendlies can grab a free account on their browser of choice or mobile!

HARVESTELLA saw us finishing up the chapter in Argene and what a ride it was. We nearly got executed, foiled a mass murder event, and brought down a cult. Truly we deserve a break and some farming after all that! We'll be aiming to get some heart events and side quests done as we meander through summer.

24 Solar Terms is a laidback puzzle game centered around Chinese farming proverbs. The art looks lovely and the idea of using proverbs as the clues for a puzzle game drew me in! I'm excited to see how this one plays out as it just came out in April~

Second Rain of The 24 Solar Terms | “Three Cold, Four Warm”

The twenty-four solar terms are a Chinese time knowledge system and practice formed by observing the annual movement of the sun, and after the formation of the Yellow River Basin, it was gradually promoted as a guide for the production and lifetime of the farming society. Japan follows this system as well and, according to it, every year around February 18th and 19th is the second rain of the twenty-four solar terms. Rainwater means that snow turns into rain, ice melts and becomes water, but it is also the time when plants sprout. There's still a long way to go before spring comes in earnest, and there may yet be heavy snowfalls. However, for every few days of cold days will come days of unexpected warmth. This is called "Three Cold, Four Warm" and means that we are inching ever closer to full-fledged spring step-by-step. Also, in some regions, it is said that if you display hina dolls on the 18th and 19th of February, you will be blessed with a good match.

【冬至/Winter solstice】

It is the 22nd solar term in China's 24 solar terms(二十四节气) and one of the eight astronomical solar terms.

Solar terms originated in China, then spread to Korea, Vietnam, and Japan, countries in the East Asian cultural sphere. Although each term was named based on the seasonal changes of climate in the North China Plain, peoples living in the different climates still use it without changes.

This is exhibited by the fact that traditional Chinese characters for most of the solar terms are identical.On December 1, 2016, the solar terms were listed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of China.

冬至 is also a traditional ancestor worship festival in China. It is regarded as a big festival in winter. There is a saying in ancient folk that "the winter solstice is as big(important) as the new year". The customs of the 冬至 vary in content or details due to different regions.

“画九/Huajiu ”

The so-called Huajiu is actually a diagram for calculating the date of warm spring after the 冬至/winter solstice. The Ming Dynasty's "Emperor Beijing Scenery/帝京景物略" contains: "On the day of the 冬至/winter solstice, draw a plain plum with eighty-one petals,dye a petal every day, when you dye all the petals, the spring is coming." The "Nine-Nine Cold Dispelling Map/九九消寒图" has three schemas, which are characters, circles, and plum blossoms.

Making Rice Wine/酿米酒

The traditional Gusu(Now:Suzhou) family will making rice wine on the night of the 冬至/Winter solstice.The Glutinous rice or yellow rice is used for brewing wine in winter, and sweet-scented osmanthus is added for brewing

【What do people eat on 冬至(Winter solstice?】

汤圆(Tangyuan)/Glutinous rice balls

Eating Glutinous rice balls is a traditional custom of the 冬至/Winter solstice, especially in the south of the Jiangnan. "Tangyuan" is a must-have food for the 冬至/Winter solstice. " 圆 Yuan" means "reunion 团圆 " and "completeness 圆满 ". There is a folk saying that "you will be one year older after eating glutinous rice balls".

Dumplings(饺子)

In many parts of northern China, there is a custom of eating dumplings on the winter solstice every year. In the northern part of China, dumplings are eaten on this day because dumplings have the meaning of "eliminating the cold". There is still a folk proverb that "if you don't serve the dumpling bowl on the winter solstice, your ears will freeze and no one will care about you".

1. Fungi discovered that can eat plastic in just 140 days

Australian scientists have successfully used backyard mould to break down one of the world's most stubborn plastics — a discovery they hope could ease the burden of the global recycling crisis within years. 

It took 90 days for the fungi to degrade 27 per cent of the plastic tested, and about 140 days to completely break it down, after the samples were exposed to ultraviolet rays or heat. We really see a solution within five years, according to environmental scientist Paul Harvey, an expert on global plastic pollution.

2. Topeka Zoo welcomes new African Lion as female sprouts mane

The Topeka Zoo has welcomed a new African Lion to its pride, a male, as one of its females started to sprout a mane following the 2021 passing of the pride’s last male.

The Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center announced on Thursday, April 13, that Tatu, a 4-year-old African Lion, has arrived in the Capital City. He comes to Topeka from the Denver Zoo and his arrival marks a time of growth for the zoo.

3. This barber opens his shop on his day off for children with special needs – and all of their haircuts are free

On his day off, Vernon Jackson still goes to work, opening up his Cincinnati barber shop, Noble Barber and Beauty, for VIP clients: children with special needs.

"I was hearing so many horror stories that parents were going through with other barber shops and just the barbers or stylists having no patience with their child," Jackson told CBS News. 4. Renewables break energy records signalling ‘end of the fossil age’

Experts are calling time on the fossil age as new analysis shows wind and solar power produced a record amount of the world’s electricity last year.

The renewables generated 12 per cent of global electricity in 2022, up from 10 per cent the previous year, according to the report from clean energy think tank Ember. Last year, solar was the fastest-growing source of electricity for the 18th year in a row, rising by 24 per cent from 2021.

5. New nuclear medicine therapy cures human non-hodgkin lymphoma in preclinical model

A new nuclear medicine therapy can cure human non-Hodgkin lymphoma in an animal model A single dose of the radioimmunotherapy, was found to quickly eliminate tumour cells and extend the life of mice injected with cancerous cells for more than 221 days (the trial endpoint), compared to fewer than 60 days for other treatments and just 19 days in untreated control mice.

To explain it in simple terms because this is so freaking cool: There is a radioactive atom attached to a drug. The target cell eats the drug and the energy coming off of the radioactive atom kills the target cell

6. Colorado passes first US right to repair legislation for farmers

Colorado farmers will be able to legally fix their own equipment next year, with manufacturers including Deere & Co obliged to provide them with manuals for diagnostic software and other aids, under a measure passed by legislators in the first U.S. state to approve such a law.

Equipment makers have generally required customers to use their authorized dealers for repairs to machines such as combines and tractors.

The Times:

The Prince of Wales is to build and fund a £3 million social housing development on his land to tackle homelessness.

William has overseen plans to construct the 24 homes in Cornwall to be ready next year. They will provide high-quality accommodation in an area with one of the most acute homelessness problems in the UK.

The development in Nansledan, a suburb of Newquay, the Cornish seaside town famous for its surfing, will include a mix of four-bedroom houses and one-bedroom flats.

The duchy, which provides the heir to the throne with an income, recorded profits of £24 million in 2022-23. It will supply the land for the project free of charge and cover all construction costs. It will also invest in local infrastructure, including a bus link and connections to electricity, water and superfast broadband.

The new low-carbon homes will feature slate roofs, granite lintels, solar panels, heat pumps and colourful timber windows. It will be built in a “traditional Cornish seaside” style, designed by Adam Architecture and local firm ALA Architects.

It is understood William wants the development to “look and feel as homely as possible” to combat the stigma of social housing. The site will also be re-landscaped and shrubs and wildflowers planted to encourage biodiversity.

Sources close to William, 41, said he wanted to “lead from the front” and encourage other landowners to build more social housing. He is said to be considering further projects on his land.

The duchy is working on the project with the Cornish homelessness charity St Petrocs with the long-term aim of helping people move from temporary accommodation at Nansledan into permanent homes.

It will provide residents with a range of “wraparound services”, including mental health support, counselling, training and employment opportunities, in what Kensington Palace described as the duchy’s “first innovative housing project to help address homelessness”.

For future local developments, HRH has committed to increasing affordable housing from the 30 per cent national requirement to 40 per cent, with a focus on social housing, meaning an extra 200 affordable houses will be built in Nansledan, where there are 1,020 homes at present.

Last year William, who is patron of the homelessness charities Centrepoint and the Passage, launched Homewards, a five-year initiative to tackle homelessness. It will provide £3 million from the Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales — £500,000 to six locations across the UK where groups of housing experts, businesses and councils will work on plans to end homelessness in their areas.

Experts from Homewards will also work on the Nansledan project with the hope that its success can be replicated nationwide, and in the Homewards locations in Northern Ireland, Lambeth, Aberdeen, Newport, Sheffield, and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

Kensington Palace said: “The prince is delighted that the duchy is using the Homewards approach as inspiration for building this innovative housing project, partnering with St Petrocs to find ways of ultimately getting people into permanent housing.

“It is exactly what he wants to do and for him it’s another example that if we can show people here and in other countries what is possible, maybe others will follow our lead. The prince hopes that every town and city in the country will take inspiration from this project.”

During a day of engagements in Cornwall last year, the duke and duchess visited St Petrocs, which works alongside Cornwall council to identify those experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless.

William was given a copy of the charity’s book People. Project Cornwall which explores the experiences of people with housing difficulties. He was “deeply moved” and arranged for all members of the Prince’s Council, the Duchy of Cornwall’s board, to receive a copy.

Henry Meacock, the charity’s chief executive, said: “Where Prince William is showing great leadership is in wanting change in the approach to prevention and early intervention around homelessness. “We have a unique opportunity in Nansledan with a socially-minded landowner who has a long-term development mindset, demonstrating to the private sector that you can still be commercial and make a profit but also invest in the local community. The focus for us is about breaking the cycle of homelessness and ending it for good.”

The plans for Nansledan will go out for public consultation this month, with work on the development to begin in September. The first homes are due to be complete the following autumn.
