You hated math class. It was your least favorite period of the day. Math was never your strong suit, meaning you constantly failed it. Your Math teachers' words sounded like gibberish to you. Not like you were even paying attention to her to begin with. You never could. Not when they were sitting right in front of you. Laughing and smiling. Touching knees and elbows. It wasn't fair. It never seemed to be.

You and Vance had been best friends for the longest time. Your parents were neighbors, meaning the two of you hung out a lot. Any and everything you did, Vance did it with you. Or vice versa. The two of you were inseparable, attached at the hip. He was the yin to your yang. Hell, your parents even had photo Albums of the two of you. From your first birthday parties, to your first day of each grade. He tended to get you into trouble, but you were always the one to get both of you out.

It's hard for you to remember when you developed feelings for Vance. Maybe it was when he beat up those kids for making fun of your backpack in 6th grade. Or the time he danced with you at the school formal when you didn't have a partner. Maybe, just maybe, it might have been when he held you as you cried over your first boyfriend. It didn't matter though. Because you never stood a chance. You might have. Until she came along.

Quinn.

Quinn had moved to your small town at the beginning of February. She didn't look like the rest of girls. She had long black hair and emerald green eyes. Her tan skin decorated with freckles. She wore eyeliner and had multiple piercings. She listened to bands like ACDC, Fleetwood Mac, and Black Sabbath. She wore up to date clothing and excessive amounts of jewelry. She was smart and friendly, skilled in karate, and was way better at guitar than you too. You didn't care much that she caught almost every dude's attention. Not until It was Vance.

She had accidentally bumped into him at the Music store the two of you visited. Instead of threatening to beat the person who caused him to drop his record to a pulp, he softened instantly at the sight of her. You swore to god that he blushed when she smiled at him. The two of them hit it off quickly and began chatting. You had planned to go get lunch after with just Vance, but he thought it was a good idea to bring her along. While they sat way too close for comfort in the booth, gushing over pinball, you just poked at your fries.

Vance took her everywhere after that. Your movie nights at the cinema? She took your spot beside him. The little trips to the go-go mart? She was the one cheering him on as he beat is new high score. The picnic spot off the hill you introduced to him to? She asked him to take her there. It made it worse that he complied and didn't even ask if you wanted to tag along. You hated her. You hated how she took your best friend away from you. It made your blood boil.

You were the one who tended to his wounds after he fought someone. You were the person he came to when he needed help in school. It was you who watched the stars at night and pointed out constellations in his backyard. Not her. What did she have that you didn't? Is she better looking? Smarter than you? Nicer? More sociable? What was it? Why did he like her and not you? It wasn't fair. You wished that Vance looked at you the way he did at her. The way he hugged her. The way his face lit up when he saw her walk through the door. The final straw for you was at your 16th birthday party. ︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵

You had planned this party out since you were 11. Vance even helped pick out most of the decorations and food. It was a Saturday evening and your parents were helping you set the music up. You had picked the local amphitheater to host your party since it was pretty big and had nice scenery. Bruce, Gwen, and Finney had offered to help you decorate beforehand. Vance had too, but he was nowhere to be seen. It didn't bother you that much since he wasn't one to have good timing. But you felt some concern as time passed.

Your friends and family arrived a bit after you set out the food. Sure, you were a tad bit popular, but no where close to Quinn. You felt relatively good about the amount of people who you invited, considering they all showed up. But Vance was still no where to be found. His family was there so you decided to ask if they knew. His mom gave you a sad look and shook her head. His dad just patted your back and shrugged. You knew he would show up eventually.

Right?

You needed him to show up. You relied on it. Sighing, you stepped to the side and took out a piece of paper out of your back pocket. The paper was a mix of different words and arrows. It was a script, if you will. Tonight would be the night that you told him you liked him. It was a good idea in your mind. The party was going well, and you would pull him to the side and blankly spell it out for him. As Time went on, he was still nowhere to be found.

Eventually, your parents made you open your gifts. Even though you insisted on waiting on Vance. Your guests didn't disappoint with them. They gave you all sorts of things. New games, clothing, books, even stuff you said you'd been interested in once or twice. The last gift you had to open was Bruce's. Before you got the chance to pull out the remaining tissue paper, you heard a familiar voice. You looked up from the table to see Vance walking towards you. He wasn't alone though. Quinn was with him.

Hand in hand.

Everyone greeted and chatted briefly with them as they made their way beside you. "Hey (Y/n)." You turned as he spoke. "It's nice to see you! It feels like you're never around anymore." Quinn added. You forced a smile before your dad came up behind you. "Vance! It's nice to see you! We were just finishing up the gifts." Vance's face changed to hesitation, as did Quinn's. Vance's dad asked if they brought anything for you and neither gave them a reply. Before you could make a comment, Mrs. Hopper came back from the bathroom. "Oh my! Honey, you didn't tell me your girlfriend was this stunning!"

Your world collapsed in those few words.

Girlfriend? Were Quinn and Vance dating? Since when? And why didn't Vance tell you? You were his best friend after all! Is this why he never hung out with you anymore? Were you just not as important? Did he even-. You were pulled back from your own thoughts as you heard his mom point out Quinn's Necklace. It was a silver chain with a guitar pick hooked on it. Why did it look so familiar? Maybe because you had given it to Vance after his first guitar performance. You couldn't help but feel tears build up. Why did he have to bring her? Why would he not tell you they're together? Why the hell would he give her your necklace? You didn't have a chance to process anything before the words slipped out of your mouth.

"Vance, what the fuck?"

There was a wave of silence as you spoke. The music seemed to fade along with side conversation. Your mom called you out, but you ignored her. Vance gave you a look of confusion. "What is what?" He asks. You scoffed. "Don't act clueless. We both know you aren't dumb." You took a step closer to the couple. "Why today of all days? Why didn't you tell me? Why now?" Quinn gave you a eyebrow raise. "What's wrong? Why are you-"

"Shut up."

She did shut up. "Don't talk to her like that." Vance sneered. You felt a bit hurt at his tone. He'd never talked to you in that manner and you didn't like it. "What's up with you (Y/n)? You've been acting so different lately." Quinn added. "What's up with me?" You ask. "What's up with you Quinn? Hm? What's up with you waltzing into town and taking everything away from me? What's up with you being better than me? Or prettier than me? What's up with you stealing my friends? My life even." She didn't say anything. "(Y/n), you're being dramatic. We can talk about this-"

"I'm being dramatic? I'm the drama? Why don't we talk about this now Vance. Let's talk about how my lifelong best friend replaced me. Why don't we sit down over dinner and talk about how you chose a complete stranger over me. Oh, no. Let's talk about how you never talk to me anymore, why Don't we? Might as well chit-chat about how she's messed everything up! Ever since she came into town, you've changed. I don't like it. You do everything with her and nothing with me. All you do is constantly ditch me to go to everything we ever did with her. I never see you anymore. She's taken my friends from me. No one hangs out with me because they're too busy with Quinn. She took my seat in all my classes. My spot at lunch. Everything! Vance you forgot about me. You forgot who I am. For fuck's sake, you forgot my own birthday! You helped me plan this for years. I bet you're only here because your mom told you to be. You didn't even get me a gift! I could care less about that to be honest. But you gave my gift to you away!" You shouted, pointing to Quinn's necklace.

"You and I both know damn well I gave that to you on October 27th, 2 years ago. The chain and all. You give Quinn everything! Your time, Your food, Your hair products, everything! I had tonight all planned out. Everything was supposed to go smoothly and not be a complete shit show. I saved a spot for you at the table and left your favorite records out." You took the note in your pocket out, and unfolded it. "I had a plan to tell you how I felt-" Your voice got quite as you looked at your scribbled words. "I planned to tell you I liked you. That I've liked you for the longest time. To tell you everything I like about you. To tell you that I'd always like you.." Tears flooded your face as you looked up to him. You could see a look on his face you'd never seen. In all the years you'd know him, he'd never given you this look. You didn't know if it was sympathy, or hesitation. Regret or guilt.

Vance let go of Quinn's hand and walked towards you. He stood in front of you and sighed. "(Y/n)…" He placed a hand on your cheek, only to have you shove it off.

"Why not me?"

You asked, choking on your own sobs. You couldn't handle this. Not the way Vance looked at you. Not the guilt on Quinn's face. Not the way your parents looked at you with sympathy. And especially not the way the world seemed to go quiet when he said nothing. You figured you'd only make things worse than they already were. You took this chance to part your way through your guests and walk out of the amphitheater. You could hear the voices of Vance and everyone else calling out to you as you made your way to a nearby forest.

He’s barely dated enough girls to subscribe to a type, and loathes the idea of being predictable enough to have one, but it doesn’t exactly take rocket science to understand that whatever that type is, Sansa Stark is definitively Not It.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

She has a picture of her winning Miss Teen Pennsylvania on her dresser in her cluttered little single freshman dorm and the social media christened title of Miss Bamarush and a personalized, monogrammed jewelry box that could have very well paid a solid chunk of her tuition if her parents weren’t already doing it for her and more pink clothes than he thought was physically possible.

She carries a tiny sewing kit in her bag. Like an actual sewing kit.

Everything she knows about football is against her will.

When he asked her—with no small amount of surprise, he’ll admit, though it was completely unintentional—You got into Yale?—she stared at him, mouth curling into a sneer that was sugary sweet, It wasn’t like it was hard.

From that very moment, she decided she couldn’t stand him, which he supposed was fair.

The sex is insane.

She’s got this cross necklace, a flash of 22 karat gold just between her breasts. It triggers something like a Pavlovian response in him after they hit the two month mark, makes his mouth water and his breath quicken. It brushes cold against his chest whenever she rides him.

Jon is 20 when he recalls why sex makes people do the craziest things.

Eight years of gymnastics, she says, a little haughtily, when he marvels at the limberness of her body. She folds her legs perfectly over his shoulders so she can open wider, presses her knee almost flat against her stomach just so he can be deeper, arches her back when he’s behind her because they are now so in tune with what the other likes.

She likes his mouth, on her throat, sewing hickeys into her skin like glittering red sequins, and bracketed by her thighs when she straddles his face from above. Oh please, she snaps, when she’s just about had it with him and she’s gonna let him know, then: Please, muffled into her arm when his hands are on her hips and he’s pulling her back onto him.

He likes messing her up. He likes tossing her prissy little headbands to the side and leaving a rash from his stubble between her legs and shoving down her tube top and winding her hair around his hand, making it known on her body that he was here, even if the assholes stumbling over their feet on campus can’t see them, he knows—

He knows.

“You’re the worst,” She grumbles, dabbing concealer on her neck before she heads back to her dorm in time to get ready for date night.

Roaring 20’s is the theme.

Her flapper dress is the color of starlight. She tried it on in front of his mirror, and he pretended to do his homework while she twirled in front of the mirror.

He didn’t know what he liked better—when she didn’t know he was watching or when she pretended not to notice.

“You could stay,” he offers, casual, like his heart isn’t in his throat, like she isn’t under his skin.

Sansa’s gaze slides over to him in the mirror as she strategically drapes her hair around her neck.

He breaks first, looking away.

This happens a lot with her.

“If I did,” She says, voice lilting and airy, “You’d never get anything done.”

Probably not. Then, as she makes his way towards him, he amends that, “Definiteky not.”

Sansa kisses him, soft and brief, tasting of cherry chapstick and him.

“Thanks,” it’s sweet and it’s quiet and it’s sincere and that’s probably the worst part of all, because that’s just who she is. It probably means nothing.

He doesn’t even want it to.

She isn’t even his type.

Cyra waited patiently for the door to open. She clutched the beautifully wrapped box in her hands. She really hoped Ace would like the Valentine’s present she got him. Sure, they weren’t actually dating but Cyra didn’t care. She just wanted him to know how much she adored him regardless.

The door opened and Ace’s gaze immediately fell to the box. He didn’t say anything about it until they got into the house though.

“The driver said you were late meeting him,” Ace said, tapping his nails on the kitchen counter.

“Sorry, my plane landed a little later than expected,” Cyra explained.

Ace ignored her apology and pointed at the box. “What’s that?”

Cyra perked up. She walked to the other side of the counter where the femme was standing and held the box out to him.

“Happy Valentine’s day!”

Ace raised an eyebrow and took the box from her. He set it down on the counter and carefully untied the silk ribbon that was wrapped around it. He then unfolded the wrapping paper with delicate accuracy, not tearing it at all.

When the white box was revealed underneath all the fancy packaging, the femme glanced at Cyra. She just stared at him nervously.

Ace lifted the top of the box off and set it to the side, unveiling a large, two-finger ring. He took the ring out of its cushioning and examined it closely.

“What is it made of?” he asked.

“Diamond in the center, surrounded by emeralds and the rest is 22 karat gold,” Cyra explained. “The ring part is made of pure silver.”

“Just 22 karats?” Ace looked over at Cyra, waiting for an explanation.

“I couldn’t get 24 in that size. They would have been too big.”

She waited patiently for a response as the femme went back to looking at the ring. He turned it around, inspecting it from all angles.

Finally, Ace held the ring out for Cyra to take. He then extended his fingers towards her. “Put it on for me.”

Heart leaping with excitement, Cyra took the ring and slid it onto the femme’s long fingers as carefully as she could. Once it was on, Ace admired the piece of jewelry on his hand.

“Thank you,” he said. “It’s beautiful.”

Cyra smiled and watched as Ace put the lid back on the now empty box.

“I didn’t get you anything,” he said. His tone was patronizing instead of apologetic, like he was trying to rub it in.

“I didn’t expect you to,” Cyra replied with a laugh.

Ace giggled too. He quickly looked Cyra up and down, his long eyelashes fluttering. “Come here.”

Cyra obediently stepped closer to the femme, having no idea why he wanted her closer. Ace gently wrapped his hand around her jaw and pulled her into an unusually sweet kiss. It only lasted a couple, painfully short seconds and then the femme pulled away again.

“Next time, get 24,” he whispered.

Cyra snorted out a laugh as Ace stepped away from her. She wasn’t sure why she expected him to be completely satisfied with anything she did for him. For some reason though, she held onto the hope.

“Am I not worth 24 karats?” Ace asked, holding his chin high.

“You’re worth a million,” Cyra replied, matching the femme’s level of drama.

“Exactly.” Ace picked up a makeup bag that was sitting on the kitchen counter. “Let’s get ready. We have lunch reservations.”
