Letter from John Adams to the President of Congress
Record Group 360: Records of the Continental and Confederation Congresses and the Constitutional ConventionSeries: Papers of the Continental CongressFile Unit: Letters from John Adams
Passy Decr 6. 1778 [29 in upper right corner] Sir I have had the Honour to inclose to Congress, the speech at the opening of the British Parliament, by several opportunities: But as it opens the Intentions of the Ennemy, and warns us to be prepared, for all the Evils, which are in their Power to inflict and not in our Power to prevent, I inclose it again in another form. I have the Honour to be, with the highest Respect Sir your most obedient, and most humble servant [signed] John Adams. President of Congress.

Pilgrimage certificate with illustration of the Ka'ba, Saudi Arabia or Iran, 1778 (1193 A.H.)
"This pilgrimage (hajj) certificate shows the holy city of Mecca, with the Ka'ba at centre and various monuments surrounding it. The style of domed arches that surround the map suggests that they may have been painted by Indian artists in Arabia. This image would have provided a way for the pious Muslim to imaginatively re-trace the path of pilgrimage, as well as to share that journey with those still waiting to depart. The inscription reveals that this certificate belonged to a woman, Bibi Khanum, who paid Sayyid 'Ali Wali to perform the pilgrimage in her place, perhaps due to poor health. The seal of Sayyid 'Ali Wali appears below, guaranteeing the completion of Bibi Khanum’s spiritual obligation."

I am young, I am therefore unexperienced, but every mean in my power, every knowledge in the military way I can have got since the first days of my life, every thing nature could have granted to me, all my exertions, and the last drop of my blood, schall be employed in showing my acknowledgement for such a favor and how I wish to deserve it.

George Washington to Ensign Jacob I. Klock, Valley Forge - Head Quarters, [June 13, 1778], in John Laurens's writing
Tumblr media
Sir
Thirty four of the Indians who are in Camp being desirous of returning home, and it being necessary to commit them to the care of a prudent officer who will preserve good order among them I have appointed you for that purpose and you are to conduct them to Fort Schuyler or the neighborhood of Johnstown—pay the strictest attention to restraining them from irregularities, and causing an uneasiness to the Inhabitants on the road—You will draw provision for them upon giving your receipt at the Continental Magazines as Occasion may require.
As you are going to the neighborhood of your own habitation I have no objection to your taking a week or ten days for your private affairs. I am &c

Sir
I take the liberty of transmitting to Congress the Enclosed letter, which I just now received from the pay master General. They will perceive by it that the Military Chest is entirely exhausted and that a third of the army remains unpaid for the months of April and May. The importance + now pity of an immediate and large supply will at once appear and I am persuaded it will be ordered and forwarded with all possible expedition.
Since I had the honor of writing by Colo Hoth on Sunday last I have not received any advice from Rhode Island.
I have the Honor to be
with great respect & esteem
Sir
Your Most Obedt Sevt
Go Washington
Hon ble
Henry Laurens Esq
