Today is Armistice Day. The eleventh month, the eleventh day, the eleventh hour, and now on my end the eleventh minute.

My country was never engaged in 'The Great War', but the even shook the Swedish consciousness and perspective on war. It served as an affirmation of our reluctance to join international alliances and a reminder that modern warfare was one with unparalleled misery and destruction.

"Never Again" was a phrase we took seriously, and entire batches of people born certain years where decided to never enter military service or military conscription. Sadly, just about 20 years later, it was very clear that "never again" was a phrase that needs to be put into quotation marks, and uttered in its historical context as a hopeful one.

Today war rages on, as it has intermittently since 1918. Wars are not frequently, in my perspective, close to my borders. But in the last couple years it has been, and we have had to take stock on our stance on neutrality and resistance to military alliances. My thought goes out to everyone, near and far, that suffer the injustice and crimes against humanity that is war and the other horrors that far too often comes with it.

I will light a candle for all the victims. Not the one close to my home and heart, but all that suffer. I will say "Never Again", and I will mean it even if it will not be true today, or tomorrow.

One day, I hope, it will be.

1 was from Egypt, 1 from Lebanon.

None of the hijackers were from Iraq.

None of the Sept 11 hijackers were Iraqi.
