PLEASE READ ALL
Hey there Puparoonies! With December fast approaching and a new 101 Dalmatian Street trending party set up for Jan 2- Jan 3, I figured I should make some ART! I've made an all new drawing grid just for Drawcember and made it vague so people can reuse it for whatever fandom they want! (A shout out back to me so I can see your art would be great if you do btw!)
HOW ITS GONNA WORK- I have made a grid of aesthetics that will be the theme of the piece. Basically I'll draw a characters in an outfit that matches the aesthetic provided. They will get a hat, a bag and a piece of jewellery and I'll try to make it match their personality if I can! (For example, if Dylan got the Space Aesthetic I'd go more sciency. For Dawkins, more sci-fi show. For Dolly, cool aliens!)
HOW DO WE PICK THE CHARACTERS TO AN AESTHETIC?! - I'll be holding polls to decide now that Tumblr can do that. We have an A team and a B team. So we'll be voting on two Aesthetics at a time. I'll post the Aesthetic and a description so you know what to expect.
WHAT ARE THE AESTHETICS?!
Tumblr media
(Photos just grabbed off of google. All pictures here are not mine.)
Descriptions
(Please note that aesthetics can very from person to person on what they mean, and what they include! These are just my takes.)
Pastel- The pastel aesthetic is just as straightforward as its name, focusing on everything that's less saturated and in lighter hues. In particular, the word “pastel” refers to a soft and delicate shade of a color produced by adding more white.
Vaporwave- The Vaporwave aesthetic incorporates early Internet imagery, late 1990s web design, glitch art, and cyberpunk tropes, as well as anime, Greco-Roman statues, and 3D-rendered objects. VHS degradation is another common effect seen in vaporwave art.
Dark - Dark aesthetic covers a wide range of different things. If its dark and edgy , it can fall under this same system. Sometimes there's horror elements, but it can also be cutesy. All you really need is black, greys, and sparse uses of blood red and neon green. Some spikes can't hurt either!
Neon- The Neon aesthetic (Or Glowwave.) Is the use of bright, almost glowing colors on darker scenes. Reflective surfaces, sparkles and bright 'neon' pink can dominate this aesthetic.
Pastel Goth- Pastel Goth is an aesthetic that is a result of mixing goth or grunge with the sweet pastel elements of the kawaii aesthetic. Think if horror was cute, or cute was horrific if that's easier. Lots of black and pastel colours here.
Punk-Punk aesthetics determine the type of art punks enjoy, which typically has underground, iconoclastic, and satirical sensibilities. Punk can be as messy or minimalist as you want. It also tends to be more focused on the handmade, reused and recycled. Newspaper collages, safety pin, metal spikes, oh yeah!
Black and white- Contrast. That is the core of the Black and White aesthetic. Using only grayscale to convey detailed images. Tends to be fancy, simple and clean!
Rainbow- COLOUR, COLOUR, COLOUR! Rainbow is all colour all the time! With clear, fun shapes and fun splatters, rainbow is just... colourful fun.
Space- Spacecore is a type of aesthetic that is centered around astronomy, stars and planets. It can also be called astrocore or cosmic core. Spacecore uses lots of stars and planet type things in clothing or decor. Many spacecore aesthetics will have pictures of the sun, the moon or the stars.
Cottagecore- Cottagecore is an aesthetic that celebrates simple living, particularly in the countryside. It encourages a lifestyle rooted in traditional skills—like baking bread, gardening, and sewing your own clothes. Basically you live in a modern day Jeremiah Puddleduck book.
Pale- Palewave centers around muted and pale colors with a very relaxed and comfy vibe. Think light, easy, breezy and gentle designs. Nothing pops out right off the bat in this muted aesthetic.
Kidcore- Bright colours, cartoon designs, nostalgia, and fun! Its somewhat similar to rainbow, but you can't escape consumerism in this aesthetic usually! Toys, games, anything to do with just being a kid and enjoying life is included!
NOW WHAT?!
Now you vote in the polls! Just pick whichever character you want to see in the aesthetic listed. Please note that in order to draw this all in one month, I will be making the polls quick! The first one I'll have last a week, to help spread the word, but after that they will likely only last a day! That being said, each character will only be used ONCE. So once they're picked for an aesthetic, their off the voting board. Were you hoping a character would get a different one? Well don't worry! I may do this again, or you can try it yourself to! Just have fun!
Make sure to follow @bks-blogs for more 101 Dalmatian Street news and updates for the trending party!

Fairy-tail—Luke Hemmings oneshot
Tumblr media
I watched all of the 101 Dalmatians movies and this is what happened. I hope you like it!
feedback is always welcome💖
word count: 2.5k
enjoy!
Ever since Luke could remember he’s always loved dalmatians. When he was a young boy he exhausted the VHS tape of 101 Dalmatians so much his parents had to buy two different tapes and regulate how many times he watched the movie. He loved the live versions as well.
It was something about how each dalmatian wouldn’t have the same spots as the other and they ultimately looked cool. He begged and begged his parents to get a dalmatian puppy but they were an expensive breed  and the answer was always no.
It wasn’t until he moved out, got his own apartment and started going to college that he was able to purchase his own dalmatian pup. He had to take odd jobs here and there, delivering food, teaching guitar lessons, watering his neighbor’s plants that always seemed to be traveling to Greece or Brazil. He worked odd hours and on top of school he barely slept, but he loved staying up to search for dalmatians for sale.
He spent a lot of nights eating ramen or cereal. Luke looked at five shelters daily in case dalmatians showed up. It wasn’t until one of his classmates, Michael, tagged him in a post on Facebook showing a litter of dalmatians were up for sale. Luke quickly removed his reading glasses to rub at his eyes.
He placed the glasses back on so he could see more clearly as he read the post. Nine puppies, five female and four male were for sale. Luke quickly sent a message to the owner without bothering to look at the pictures. After a few quick replies back and forth, Luke had a meeting set up for Sunday afternoon.
During his music class he kept looking through the photos of the puppies, each one adorable in their own way with their own set of spots. He was distracted through his Friday classes and was antsy in his apartment all Saturday.
He woke up early Sunday morning and tried to keep himself busy by cleaning his apartment, jotting down a few song lyrics and keying at his piano. He paced. He laid on the floor and tossed a ball in the air, something he’d do when he had a mind block on writing.
When it was finally time to leave he practically skipped out the door, down the stairs and all the way to his car. It was an hour drive to the owner’s house and he cruised the highway at a steady 90 mph.
The house had chickens running amok around the yard and a beautiful dalmatian greeted him on the front porch step, tail wagging and wet nose keening to sniff at Luke’s fingers.
“Hey boy, you must be the proud father, huh?” Luke smiled then rang the doorbell.
The owner was a woman in her mid fifties, her white hair pulled up in a tight bun. When she smiled, wrinkles formed around her mouth and Luke could tell she was a woman who loved to laugh.
“You must be Luke,” she smiled opening the porch door.
“I am. And you must be Dotty.”
“I am, please,” she stepped aside and gestured inside the house, “come in. The puppies are in the mudroom with their mama.”
Luke had a ball of excitement in his chest as he followed her through the house. Very soon he would be picking out his own dog, his own dalmatian. He could hear the soft squeaks of the pups and when he turned the corner, his eyes widened at the sight of them all.
Two were sleeping against the mother, some were playing with each other, one was playing with the door stopper and yipping at the rattling noise it made. He was so happy he almost cried.
“Did you have a preference on which type you wanted? Male or female?” Dotty asked.
“It really doesn’t matter to me,” Luke shook his head, “Is that all right? I was kind of hoping I’d know when I meet them.”
“Of course it’s all right. You’re the first one to reach out so you can pick whichever one you’d like,” Dotty smiled. “You can go on in and introduce yourself.”
Luke climbed over the gate and as soon as he did, all the puppies flocked towards him. He really could cry now as they scrambled over one another to get to him.
“Hi guys,” he smiled at each one, letting one climb up and lick his chin. “You’re all gorgeous, you know that? Look at you.”
He played with them for a while but his eyes kept going to the puppy that was playing with the door stopper. She was sitting patiently watching her brothers and sisters interact with him, but whenever Luke looked her way, her tail wiggled. He set one down and held out his hand to her.
“Hi pretty girl, do you want to say hi? It’s okay, c’mon,” he made kissy noises and she stood on all four legs. Her dark brown eyes stared into his eyes, then she pressed her cold nose to his fingers. “That’s a girl.”
She licked his fingers then approached him slowly until she had her front legs on his lap. She stretched up and he noticed she was a lot smaller than the others. She sniffed at his chin and ear before sitting in his lap and then laid down completely. Luke stroked the curve of her back noticing how some of her spots were arranged in the shape of a petunia.
“I think you’ve been chosen,” Dotty said with her hands on her hips.
“Why do you say that?”
“That little one hasn’t warmed up to anyone in my family, even me and I’ve been breeding for years. She loves her mama though, but she went to you right away.”
“She is very sweet,” Luke smiled down at the puppy. He stroked her nose and her eyes closed.
“Well? What do you think, have you found your puppy?”
“I think so,” Luke smiled.
***
After filling out the paperwork and taking copies of the vaccinations and shots  the puppies received, Luke and his new companion were on the road together. He drove a lot slower on the highway this time and he would glance at her every few seconds to make sure she was all right. Eventually, she crawled onto his lap and he held her protectively for the whole drive while she slept.
“I suppose I should go get the food Dotty recommended, huh?” He asked her and took the exit towards the pet store that’s fifteen minutes from campus.
He let her walk around on the grass so she could go to the bathroom then carried her inside. Luke grabbed a cart heading in the direction of the dog aisle.
“Would you like a bed? You’ll sleep with me mainly but maybe you’d like one of your own,” he said looking at each one. She eyed them as well then yipped when he rolled her past a pastel pink bed. “You like this one?”
It was a pretty big bed for the size of her but he relented because she’ll grow into it one day. It took him a bit to maneuver the bed on the lower rack of the cart and he went down the toy aisle.
“Okay, you can pick three toys,” he said pulling her from the cart. She sniffed at them all then licked at a pink stuffed pig, a blue dog and a pink tug toy. “You like pink, huh? I’m sensing a theme here, little pup.” He kissed the top of her head putting the toys and her back into the cart.
Then he grabbed the food, some bones and balls, and some puppy treats. He made sure her collar and leash were pink before he headed to the checkout line but then had to run and get a food and water dish.
She laid on his lap again for the ride back to his apartment. She followed him to the door but then sat at the bottom of the steps before he noticed she wasn’t with him. She stared at him waiting while he had his arms full of bags.
“Oops, you don’t know how to walk up the stairs yet, huh?”
He set the bags down and lifted her up into his arm. Somehow he managed to keep all the bags and her in his arms safely as he trekked to the second floor.
“Welcome to your new home!” he said then set her down on the floor. He watched her sniff and smell certain spots, when her nose bumped the string of his guitar and made a noise, she jumped back and yipped at it. Curious, she bumped it again so it made the same noise and he wondered if it reminded her of the door stop.
He walked over the pick up the guitar and sat down on the floor. He played a few chords, she sniffed at his hands as they moved along and barked along with his playing.
“You like music, that’s good,” he smiled and propped the guitar on its stand again. He lifted her in his arms, she licked his cheek. “I should give you a name, huh? You know, I’ve wanted a dalmatian all my life and not once had I thought of the name. I always liked Pongo from 101 Dalmatians but you’re a cute little girl dog, not a boy dog. What was the girl’s name again?” He held her up so he could look at her eyes. “Petunia?”
She yipped and licked his nose and his face, making him laugh.
“I guess that’s your name, Petunia.”
Later on while they were laying in his bed watching 101 Dalmatians he found out the name was actually Perdita but he thought Petunia fit her more.
***
A year later he and Petunia formed their own routine together. She’d wake him up before his alarm with a lick to his cheek and a paw to his chest. They went for their morning walk, then he made her breakfast while his coffee brewed. He kissed her head and he was on his way to class. He’d come home, take her for a walk again and she’d listen to him play his music.
They formed a bond and he rarely had her on a leash unless he was called out on it but ultimately, she wouldn’t leave his side as he got the mail or ordered a large pretzel from the guy on the corner. She always got her own little pretzel too.
On the weekends they’d walk around campus and visit the dog park where he’d toss a ball for an hour before Petunia laid down and took a nap. Luke would pull out his notebook to jot down some song ideas but he was in a bit of a writing slump. He had to come up with a piece for the end of the semester and all he had was crumpled up sheet music littering the floor that Petunia thought were balls.
Petunia would wake from her nap and they’d head home to watch Friends or Modern Family. He would try to write some more but always came up blank.
“Well, at least I have all of Spring Break to try and figure something out, huh?” Luke asked her while he was brushing his teeth. She barked in agreement.
On the first day of Spring Break Luke and Petunia did their normal routine but it was a bit windy outside. He’s glad he put on his beanie because the wintry air still lingered in the wind and his ears would have been cold.
The dog park didn’t have many people and dogs but he still threw the ball for Petunia. On the third throw, she dropped the ball in front of him, staring at him with her dark eyes.
“Wanna head home, girl?” he asks and she licks her nose, whining a little. “Okay, let’s go. Crappy day, huh?”
Just as their about to leave, Luke hears a shriek and some barking behind him. Both he and Petunia turn around to see you running after papers blowing in the wind with a dalmatian dog barking and biting at them as well. Luke runs over to help, a sheet curling around his ankle so he picks it up and notices there’s writing on it.
“Good boy, Pongo, get them!” you squeal pulling sheets from a low hanging tree branch. Your dog barks and grabs a few from the bushes nearby.
Luke scrambles to grab more then notices your bag is still open in the grass. He closes it so no more papers fly out.
“Did we get them all?” Luke asks pressing the papers to his chest so they stay, they’re bent and crinkled.
“I think so. Man, that wind is crazy today,” you sigh walking towards him. “Thank you.”
“Uh, y-you’re welcome,” Luke stutters when he meets your eyes. You have the cutest face he’s probably ever seen. You start putting your papers back in your bag, your fingers brushing his. “Are you writing a book or something?”
“Kind of, it’s a short story for my semester grade and I thought today would be a good day to edit it. The wind thought otherwise,” you laugh.
Petunia barks up at you, pieces of paper sticking out of her mouth.
“Is she yours?” you ask.
“Yes, that’s Petunia,” Luke smiles down at her. You take the papers from her.
“Thank you Petunia,” you tell her and your dog sits down next to Petunia, papers in his mouth.
“Did I hear you say your dog’s name is Pongo?”
You shifted your eyes down bashfully.
“Yeah, I loved 101 Dalmatians growing up and I knew he’d be my Pongo. It’s weird, I know–”
“No, not at all. I’m obsessed with the movies too, Petunia’s named after it as well.”
“There’s a dog named Petunia? I don’t remember that one…”
“Well, no,” now it’s Luke’s turn to be bashful. “I know her name is Perdita but I thought it was Petunia and…here we are.”
“I think it’s sweet.”
“One of her spots even looks like a petunia.”
“Really? That’s even more special,” you smile and latch your bag shut. “Well, thanks for helping me.”
“Yeah, do you uh…wanna grab a coffee? Warm up a little from the wind?” Luke asks and then immediately regrets it. He’s a complete stranger to you.
“Coffee sounds great,” you nod. “Come on Pongo. I know this great place that allows dogs–”
“Pawsitive Coffee? I go there all the time,” Luke smiles.
“Really? We must just miss each other then. I’m y/n by the way.”
“I’m Luke,” he can’t stop smiling.
The pair of you walk out of the park, sometimes being pressed together by the wind with your dogs following behind. In the wind, Luke can hear it humming your name and he’s got a string of lyrics and chords racing through his mind. By the time you make it inside the coffee shop, he already has a song written about your smile.

Honsetly I totally agree about the remake. I don’t like how they put little effort on remakes to try to surpass the original or be as unique. every time they have speaking dialogue in the new one, they always seem monotone and robotic. It like they either have no or show emotion telling us what they feeling *that why I like the animated movie because you can get away of expressive character can get by their face or they’re voice*
The only remake I still love and will keep on watching is homeward bound and 101 Dalmatian with Glenn close *despite having a few changes, they still kept what made us love about the original. And Glenn close had way too much fun playing the role of the cruella. this was after the movie fatal attraction and I love how the meaner she was, the better the movie became*
The one thing I love about the old classic Disney movies is how Walt Disney made the movies came to life and given how limit technology they had in 1940’s. For example the movie Bambi. After the success of Snow White, Walt wanted to make a animated movie of a deer but he wanted a realistic drawings of animals, so he went and bought live animals so his employees can study the behavior of the animals
He had a subtle way of sending a psa message of preventing/how someone can recklessly start a Forrest fire *I know this because the vhs of the end of this movie had a behind the scene of how they made this movie and I love the process and learning the knowledge* and I love the music
And when I learn that they might remake, I was livid. It was one thing that we deal with Bambi mom death, we don’t need to see it live action again
Disney classic has a subtle way of sending the message, but the live action remake tend to hammer and shove the message down our throat.
I agree! I think it's important to note that, in general, the Live Action Remakes don't just "shove the message of the classics down our throats, though."
The worst thing is that they change the message of the classics, and then that new message is communicated so clumsily that it feels like they're shoving it down our throats.
Because it's like I've said before: a movie's message and a movie's characters go hand-in-hand. In fact, everything about the movie from the lighting to the music is meant to make the message clear, but still compelling.
So in a remake, if you change the message, the original characters won't fit. And if you change the characters and the message to try and match, the whole story starts to feel less compelling, less interesting, less seamless. You would've been better off making a brand-new story.
But that's the thing. They won't take the risk of making a new story. And they also won't take the risk of honoring the classic messages--and it would be a risk to do so, because the classic messages no longer fit what our current culture says about things like faith, self-sacrifice, race, love, duty, etc.
And what I mean by our current culture is, people who believe in girlbosses and self-actualization and power/agency-in-the-form-of-power, to the detriment of all the values I listed above.
Anyway. You're right! Thanks for the compliment.

We watched Walt Disney's The Jungle Book (1967).
IMDb Link: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061852/
The Jungle Book is a 1967 musical comedy film produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by Buena Vista Distribution.
The film is based on Rudyard Kipling's 1894 book of the same name. It was the 19th Disney feature film and the final film produced by Walt Disney who died during its production.
The film plot follows Mowgli, an abandoned human child raised in the Indian jungle by Wolves. Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear have to convince Mowgli to leave the jungle before Shere Khan arrives to kill him.
Wiki link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jungle_Book_(1967_film)
Early versions of the screenplay and soundtrack were more faithful to the book with a dramatic, dark and sinister tone which Disney did not like. Leading writer Bill Peet was replaced. Much of Peets work was thrown away but his characters were kept but made more happy and funny.
Work on the animation began on June 5th 1965. The animation was done by Xerography, using rough artistic edges to contrast the round animals. Background were hand painted and used in the foreground and background to create a feeling of depth.
The character of Baloo was based on real footage of bears and their movements in the wild. This was one of the first animated films to study animal behaviour.
A Disney trademark of using previous cel-sequences from other films was used for the Jungle Book. This includes 101 Dalmatians and A Tiger Walks.
The films score was composed by George Bruns and orchestrated by Walter sheets. The score features six original songs, five by the Sherman Brothers and one by Terry Gilkyson who wrote The Bear Necessities. The songs have become classic in their own right. The songs are as follows:
- The Bear Necessities - Trust in Me - I Wan'na Be Like You - Colonel Hathi's March - That's What Friends are For - My Own Home
For more information on the production of The Jungle Book, see:
Favourite scenes in The Jungle Book:
- The wolves scene at the beginning, who adopt Mowgli and raise him.
- The King Louie scene where he sings 'I'm the King of the Swingers'. ''Have Two Bananas!''
- The vultures 'That's What Friends are For' scene. The vultures where influenced by the Beetles who came from Liverpool. - - The 'Trust in Me' scene featuring Kaa the Rock Python who tries to hypnotise Mowgli with his eyes and the song!
- And of course, The Bear Necessities, which Baloo sings with Mowgli in the river.
The Jungle Book was released in October 1967, 10 months after Walt Disney's death. The film was a massive success, costing $4 million dollars to make and earning over $23 million dollars by 1970.
The film was re-released throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s and is regarded as being in the top 50 grossing films of all time.
The film has been released to home media on all available formats from VHS to streaming. The Jungle Book was digitally re-mastered in 2014.
The original aspect ratio of The Jungle Book is 1.37.1, the alternate theatrical released was 1.75:1.
The Jungle Book received positive reviews upon its release. This was partly due to the affection for Walt Disney after his death. Although it was nothing like the book, the film was seen as simple, bright and delightful entertainment.
It still has a rotten tomatoes approval rating of 88%.
In later years the film has received some criticism for being racist, however this was not the film makers intention.
In 2016, a live action/CGI version of the Jungle Book was released. It is darker than the animation but it is highly regarded.
I have seen the live action version recently on BBC iPlayer.
I first saw the Jungle Book in the late 90s on VHS, more recently I brought a copy of the film on Blu-Ray disc in 2017. This version was watched on YouTube Movies. The Jungle Book looked fantastic on my 4K LG TV!
I particularly enjoy watching Kaa, as I like snakes!
My favourite stories from Rudyard Kipling were his 'Just So' stories which I first read in the classic children's Golden Treasury book. My favourite story from 'Just So' is How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin!
Obviously the film isn't up to modern animation standards, but it is still really enjoyable to watch with its catchy songs and engaging characters.
It is a classic!

tagged by @ruby-red-inky-blue (thank you! i love movies :D)
rules: post 10 of your favourite comfort movies then tag 10 people
Robin Hood: Men in Tights — there were countless summers I spent with my brothers and we all sat together and we all enjoyed this ridiculous movie. we didn’t truly understand all of the jokes and 1990s pop culture reference, but boy did we laugh out loud the whole time.
Tumblr media
2. Pride & Prejudice — this one just hits all the right chords for me. i still love and am Mr. Darcy.
Tumblr media
3. Howl’s Moving Castle — I remember gravitating towards this movie when it first released because I saw Christian Bale was listed as a voice actor. And then I just made this ghibli movie part of my personality and you all have to deal with it.
Tumblr media
4. The Nightmare Before Christmas — another movie from my childhood. It was released on VHS (vhs!!!!) on my birthday, but my mom bought it as a gift for my older brother’s b-day two-weeks later. It’s safe to say I enjoyed it more than he did. I feel a little cringe admitting how much this movie comforts me but I’m trying to get over that.
Tumblr media
5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze — we’re not getting away from my childhood just yet. Another movie my brothers and I loved immensely. Also filipino Ernie Reyes Jr?!? Someone who looked more like us than any other actor we bothered to recognize as kids? We all wanted to be like Ernie in this movie.
Tumblr media
6. Kung Fu Hustle — also enjoyed the crap out of this one with my brothers. See this trend here? I talk about this in therapy. But, it’s got two things I love: martial arts and comedy. So good
Tumblr media
7. Tangled — after swearing I’d never enjoy another animated musical again for some weird reason, this movie came out and i watched it again and again and again.
Tumblr media
8. Alice in Wonderland — during a really hard part of my young adult life, I watched/listened to this movie a lot because something about it made me feel comfortable.
Tumblr media
9. 101 Dalmatians — another movie I had on repeat that I also watched a lot as a kid. I still want a house full of dalmatians.
Tumblr media
10. Little Women — the most recent of the bunch. i watched this for Saoirse Ronan, and then all of these old memories I had of watching the Winona Ryder version came up and I just. I can sit and watch these and for a 90-120 minutes I forget about my real life troubles and I’m just calm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
of course, share only if you’d like: @ladytharen @scoundrels-in-love @allatariel @jedi-bird @freebooter4ever @gretamaya @freshgratednutmeg and anyone else that would like to be tagged :D

What are Amaelia’s favorite movies tho?
Ok I hope I’m not forgetting anything!! I’m pretty sure I’m gonna think of more movies but these are the ones that came to mind:
Ok I just gotta add that, as we’ve established Modern!Aemond as a cinephile™️ he was probably like: “MY daughter will be introduced to CINEMA from a young age! She’s gonna have TASTE.”
And then fast forward to when Amaelia is already 2 years old and he knows the dialogue of ‘The Swan Princess’ by heart because it’s all she watches during a period of her life lmao. By now his movie shelf filled with AUTEURS™️ is starting to get filled up with princess movies. He’s not even mad though.
Peter Pan is a favorite (the animated one and the live action one from 2003). She loves to see the pirates and mermaids and the dog! And she loves Wendy because of her love for telling adventure stories. But she’s a massive fan of pirates in general.
On that note about liking pirates, she loves Treasure Planet. It’s pirates in space™️ but also loves the Muppet Treasure Island with Tim Curry.
Uncle Daeron introduces her to the live action ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies
A Bug’s Life, because it’s ‘Auntie Helaena’s movie’
For some reason, ‘Oliver and Company’ and the love action ‘The Cat In The Hat’ are Uncle Aegon’s’ movies ashshdjdksk
QUEST FOR CAMELOT! Need I explain this one? It has dragons and knights, it’s the perfect movie in her book. She loves anything with dragons and knights (dad’s influence).
Also because of knights and wizards, she loves disney’s The Sword In The Stone.
Going to self-indulge for a hot sec here and add The Black Cauldron because it’s a spooky one. Reader, seeing how much Amaelia enjoys knights and princesses, suggested this one. You were afraid she was gonna get scared but she ended up loving it.
Extra self-indulgence: reader also suggests to her ‘The Road to El Dorado’ because of all the adventure but also because of the big inspiration from Mayan cultures. Triple self-indulgence: reader and Amaelia sing the songs together every time they watch it.
Aemond really wanted Amaelia to enjoy these because they were his childhood faves, and he’s so thrilled when she does: 101 Dalmatians and Lady and The Tramp. Because, dogs! She lives in a household with two loving doggies, so of course these are amongst faves. She also loves the 101 & 102 Dalmatians movies with Glenn Close.
She has a love/hate relationship with The Land Before Time because she LOVES the dinosaurs in it but HATES the scene where Littlefoot loses his mom 😭 — she just cannot watch that. She’ll burst into tears every time and she has to be cuddled and kissed by her mom all day afterwards.
For this same reason, she can’t watch Finding Nemo, because she cries when Nemo gets separated from his dad.
I feel like she loves/is exposed to many old-school animated movies because her parents show her movies that they liked when they were kids and that want to share with her. And also, I’ve said before that Aemond loves analog media and he has a working VCR still. He must have gone to Alicent to scout for all the VHS tapes from his childhood to play Amaelia.

'90s Animated Movie Blockbuster Runs
Given how much I've been thinking about low animated movie openings lately and how much the stats regarding an animated movie's box office fascinates me, I thought I'd look at - following up on my post about not-sequel animated movies and their opening weekends - how animated heavies did around 30 years ago...
Tumblr media
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, after playing in select theaters, opened wide a week before Thanksgiving in 1991. The 22nd... Its opening weekend gross was $9m... Of course, that's in 1991 dollars. Today, that would be significantly higher, I think...
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST ended its box office run sometime in mid-1992 with $145m domestically. At the time, this was the biggest gross for an all-animated feature film, besting THE LITTLE MERMAID's $84m take from two years prior.
Back then, things were significantly different. There were no digital platforms, there were certainly less distractions, and the video release was not right around the corner. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST came to VHS and LaserDisc on October 30, 1992... That was almost a **whole year** after it had come to theaters. The public was first made aware of this on a preview at the end of the 101 DALMATIANS VHS that streeted on April 10, 1992... That was already around five months into its theatrical run.
Much like THE LITTLE MERMAID, it played off of word-of-mouth. Even nowadays, an animated feature's best friend at the box office is word-of-mouth, and where does that word-of-mouth come from?
Adults.
If LITTLE MERMAID didn't have that in 1989-90, it would've just been another GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE. Something that parents took their kids to, and maybe few Disney regulars would show up to, but that was about it.
Nestled in-between MERMAID and BEAST was THE RESCUERS DOWN UNDER, which was treated as dead-on-arrival upon its botched Thanksgiving 1990 release. Didn't help that a little movie called HOME ALONE was playing next door, which captured the minds and eyeballs of the public, from families to adults. RESCUERS DOWN UNDER not only struggled, but Disney shot the horse right as it trotted out of the gate, pulling all of its marketing within weeks of posting disappointing weekend returns. Even then, DOWN UNDER still managed to make over 8x its opening weekend gross. Only a select few animated movies have achieved that kind of multiplier post-1999. (I have a list for that, too!)
There's a stark difference between the run of a movie like RESCUERS DOWN UNDER, and the one-two punch of MERMAID and BEAST that got the "Renaissance" going for Disney Animation. DOWN UNDER, alongside Don Bluth's ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN and Fox/Kroyer's FERNGULLY: THE LAST RAINFOREST, kind illustrate this nicely... All three of those made less than $30m individually, while MERMAID, BEAST, and later ALADDIN and THE LION KING... Tore up the box office. Sometimes breaking records and topping the chart completely in the process.
ALADDIN's opening weekend in fall 1992 was $19m. THE LION KING, a summer bow in 1994, opened with $40m. From there, animated movies that audiences really wanted to see often opened with $25m or higher.
And it was because Disney at the time knew how to get people **other than** families to go see their animated movies. It was an experiment they tried out as far back as the spring of 1986, for a theatrical re-issue of SLEEPING BEAUTY... As evidenced by the tagline on this poster:
Tumblr media
"Share it with someone you love."
Dating adults.
MERMAID, BEAST, ALADDIN, and THE LION KING were partially fueled by young dating adults, giving those movies more traction than they could've ever wished for. Also helps that the movies themselves had romances in them. Adults weren't really there for DOWN UNDER, ALL DOGS, FERNGULLY, etc. They didn't have that adult hook.
It's probably why Disney seemingly mandated romances for almost every animated movie after ALADDIN and THE LION KING. Until the well dried up, that is. Maybe their executives saw just how big their movies were with dating adults, and kept going for romances. Funnily enough, the majority of THE RESCUERS DOWN UNDER's runtime is Bernard trying his damnedest to propose to Miss Bianca, and he finally gets around to doing so by the movie's end... It's a lot more subtle in that movie, and it's not a musical, so it doesn't have that sweeping sense of grandeur to it. I get the sense that a movie like DOWN UNDER was written off by moviegoers as just another kids' cartoon, some throwaway adventure like GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE, ALL DOGS, and FERNGULLY.
And of course, other animated movies began to show that you couldn't just depend on romance or big musical numbers. The Pixar films especially, even something like A BUG'S LIFE has the whole Flik-Atta dynamic secondary, and the first two TOY STORY movies don't make a huge deal about Woody and Bo Peep's relationship. FINDING NEMO kills off the love interest in the opening minutes. None of those movies were musicals. DreamWorks' CG movies weren't, either.
But it was the way the Disney filmmakers told those stories, and Disney's strategizing, that got adults to show up for those massive films...
Maybe that's the problem now. Maybe Disney Animation's WISH, STRANGE WORLD, etc.... Just didn't give anyone other than families a reason to go check out the films - in both the films themselves and in the marketing. Pixar's ELEMENTAL had awful advertising that had a real "please clap" energy to it, but when the word got out about the romantic comedy being worth watching, the movie stuck like glue for months. Even with competition left and right. DreamWorks/Universal basically threw RUBY GILLMAN out and said "Yeah, here's a movie... Maybe see it? I dunno-" Despite being buried, it somehow mustered up a 3x multiplier. WISH will be lucky to achieve that.
No matter how much people like to deny it, it takes adults to make these things successful, too. Something like PAW PATROL 2 can only go so far (it hasn't made 3x its opening weekend gross, which indicates most of its legs are from parents taking their kids to something), it takes more than just parents looking to keep their kids busy to make a blockbuster. Something the size of FROZEN, ZOOTOPIA, SECRET LIFE OF PETS, COCO, etc. With huge renowned IPs, the work is kinda done for you, i.e. SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE and such. You'd have to make it really look unappealing in order to *not* score with it.
Even in an age where a streaming/video release is within weeks of a movie's opening (sometimes the theatrical release is one big ad for the streaming debut, such as Apple's rollouts of KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON and NAPOLEON, and Amazon's release of AIR), you can still get people coming back... Right now, it seems as if Disney Animation couldn't get that right for its last two features.
Legs mean everything, you gotta give the adult something to keep them coming back.

Because I recently went to see WDAS' most recent film, Wish, and because it's their centennial, and because I'm currently listening to a mega-draft podcast of the films, here are my Top Ten Walt Disney Animation Studios films (not my list of personal favorites, the top ten films I would say are the top ten best of the canon):
Beauty and the Beast (1991) - an assuredly told version of the story, an outstanding score, stellar cast and voice work paired with great animation, a highlight of the medium of animation
Pinocchio (1940) - this was their second one out of the gate! i mean there's so much to admire: the shot of jiminy's perspective as he hops to geppetto's shop, the overhead shot of the town, the horror of lampwick turning into a donkey, the monstro chase, everything with figaro and cleo!!!
Sleeping Beauty (1959) - they set out to create a literal moving work of art and they did it. the tchaikovsky score and gorgeous painted backgrounds, PLUS you got The Golden Girls raising a child in the woods, "And now you shall deal with me O Prince, and all the powers of Hell!" FUCK.
101 Dalmatians (1961) - I watched this in its entirety for the first time as an adult after previously only seeing part of it once or twice and I never knew how fucking tight of a film this is. So tightly told. And it looks exciting and charming. A real gem from the studio.
Cinderella (1950) - the part when the grand duke is talking to the king about how the prince would react if the girl of his dreams showed up to the ball and they show the prince reacting to cindy walking into the ballroom, good shit. the message of "a dream is a wish your heart makes" gets a bad rap, but it's a pretty song and sentiment. also this movie has one of my favorite animated scenes where lady tremaine wakes up the stepsisters to tell them about the slipper and cinderella slowly realizes she danced with the prince the night before and she has this dreamy look on her face and then lady tremaine figures what's up and they pull in on her glowing green eyes and it's over for her. also I think this is one of the most gorgeous and elegant animated films. cinderelly, cinderelly!
The Little Mermaid (1989) - this probably wouldn't be on my list a few years ago, but with the live action adaptation this year and its entry into the National Film Registry, I've been reconsidering this movie and it's such a joyous and ✨ magical ✨ animated work with an emotional center that connects with so many who watch it. the YEARNING. ashman understood it. also, glen keane's (i believe he animated this part?) animation on the part of your world reprise is glorious with that fucking hair, pat carroll and the design of ursula, a heavenly match. and menken's delightful score. it's so good.
Aladdin (1992) - this is actually my number one personal fave, it's the VHS tape I watched the most growing up, but I think this is a good placement for it. It's beautiful to look at, it's a full-fledged animated comedy, it's the last of howard ashman's contributions, "friend like me" is one of the best animated sequences ever, aladdin was my first animated crush, i still stan jasmine, it spawned a pretty terrific spinoff series, jonathan freeman's cackle is the best villain cackle, and of course, robin. also, ron clements and john musker are kings.
Lilo & Stitch (2002) - the more time passes, the more I think this film proves itself to be a grand achievement in the canon. the amount of sentiment is just right, stitch is an entertaining creation and his connection with lilo is relatable, i mean the ending scene always gets me with the "it's broken but still good", also the fact that not another film in the canon looks like this one makes it stand out. and the ending shot of stitch's picture attached to the weathered family photo, ugh. it's also a love letter to "weird little kids". i love it.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) - i mean, yeah. it's scary, it's silly, the queen's transformation into the hag still rules. "one song" is an underrated song.
The Emperor’s New Groove (2000) - this movie is legendary. the story of how it came to be is insane. i read that there is actually no completed screenplay of the movie??? that's how much they had to scramble to put this together? i would also put this on a list of great comedy films. eartha kitt, eartha kitt. i don't know what things would look like if we actually got kingdom of the sun, but we are so lucky to have this hilarious movie.

Ah, Joel 🫠🫠🫠
Thank you for both the ask and the delicious gif 🩷
9. Pixar or Dreamworks?
While there are amazing movies from DreamWorks, I have to say Pixar 🙈
12. Are you against book-to-movie adaptations?
Not at all. I love seeing the books I love turned into movies or series. Has there been some hit and misses? Yes, but I still love them.
Side note to this: Can't wait for the new Eragon series 😍
31. Movie your parent showed you?
My mom has always loved movies, so from an early age she introduced me to a lot of great movies.
But my earliest memory is when we walked through a snowstorm to see the live action of 101 Dalmatians in the movies 😆
34. An underrated movie?
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. I snort laugh everytime I see it and everyone should definitely see it 🤣
69. The main movie you remember from your childhood?
Annabelle's Wish. Every Christmas me and my mom would watch it on the 24th of December. Eventhough I no longer own a VHS machine, I've kept the tape ❤️

What do you think of Direct-To-DVD sequels? I mean you mentioned about Aladdin but what about some like Cinderella.
Direct-to-DVD? Oh sweetie, for me they were direct-to-VHS. Yup, I'm THAT old!
Tumblr media
Anyway, I actually liked both Cinderella sequel. I was so happy in the second one when Anastasia found herself a boyfriend. I was even afraid when I saw the beginning of the third movie that he was erased but no, still present in the ending! Phew! Also the third movie? Hilarious and a lot more of twist and turns than expected? I felt like I was watching a telenovela but with magic.
The Direct-to-Video movies for Fox and the Hound, 101 Dalmatian and Lady and the Tramp were very nice too. Though the 101 Dalmatian sequel is the superior one of those threes.
I'm not counting Peter Pan 2 since it came out in theater (but the DVD bonuses were hella cool) nor the Jungle Book 2 since it also came out in theater but they were fun movies!
Never saw the Rescuers Down Under. We couldn't find it and we had our habits wen renting movies so our dad wasn't going out of his way to find it.
I can't recall more of those right now (probably because I'm answering those asks at 3:38 am again...) but if there's another Disney movie you want my opinion on ask away!

For Feb 2nd, it’s my second fave Disney movie, and the definition of Team Dad and Team Mom, Pongo and Perdita! Their official ship name is Pongita.
101 Dalmatians was one of the first movies I ever saw, and my Dalmatians VHS I owned 20 years ago was one of my first memories.
