Q keeps a Scrabble board in his office as decoration and amusement on late nights. But one day, someone decides to play against him. And he thinks they may be trying to tell him something.

I absolutely adore some witty (and nerdy!) flirting using a scrabble board, not to mention I'm always a sucker for the tried and true exploding pen joke :) This story is always a delight, and I've read it a few times.

Safin stopped the inevitable monologue and pointed the gun right at Bond’s head. He was close enough James could see inside the barrel, but not close enough to wrestle the gun away without getting shot, either by Safin or the men who already had guns aimed at Bond’s back.

Y'all this is arguably one of my favorite takes on a NTTD fix-it fic. Sending current Bond back to relive his earlier years so that he can (should he choose) change his future? PHENOMENAL! It's a stellar idea and it's done beautifully.

Bond knew of the unorthodox powers that came with her position. Somehow he had found out that M didn’t stand for Mansfield, but for Medium. So why was he playing dead?

An absolutely gorgeous remix of @deadicateddeath's sci-fi NTTD fix it fic We Are Made In The Eyes Of Those Who Love Us (not gen, but also highly recommend) Oliver took Thumper's concept and created a prequel from Mansfield!M's POV as she struggles with Bond's absence in Skyfall and what that means for her job.

10. rec a fic that stayed with you

There are so many fics I adore, but one I return to over and over is Sigh No More by @dhampir72. I start flailing and lose my words a little bit about this fic, because to me, it is absolutely perfect. It’s also the fic that brought me into this fandom, and forever encapsulated for me what fan fiction, at its best, can do. The characterizations of Bond and Q are loving, thoughtful, and heartbreaking while still being hopeful. Without spoiling this for the few people who may not have read this yet, there’s a bit near the end where Q is described in such a way that it forever altered how I think about this character, and how I write him (it’s a paragraph that contains the phrase “straightens his spine,” for those that are curious), and the whole thing is just a gift. I also absolutely lose my mind about the fact that it’s this deeply romantic, wonderful piece of art *while also* doing one of my other favorite things in fanfiction: seizing on a mundane detail that canon conveniently ignores (in this case, “but isn’t Bond tired of all that time on planes?”) and answering it in such a perfect way that it’s now canon to me. This is uhhh possibly more words than you wanted, Anon, but thank you for giving me a chance to flail about this fic!

25. what is the worst place you’ve read smut fic with a straight face?

Ok I adore this question, and I’m worried my answer may disappoint: I have learned the hard way that I can only read smut in the privacy of my own home, dear Anon, because I am tragically, physiologically incapable of keeping a straight face. I don’t mean that just in the wink and nudge “lol I’m not straight” way (although also, accurate), but also: I am a blusher. Like unmistakably so. If I read smut in public everyone would immediately know what I was up to and I have decided to spare us all that awkwardness. 😁

But I will give a shout-out to the random woman I saw in a coffee shop once while I was studying for the bar exam. She was reading Fifty Shades of Gray and, no joke, fanning herself and flagging down the barista for more ice water. It was so perfect I sometimes wonder if it was performance art. Bless. 💜

Crossing the Bar by GwynDuLac - Q pulls bond out of retirement for an emergency mission. the best mission fic i have ever read hands down.

Off the Books (Skyfall AU, 00Q, Explicit, 83k WIP). By far my most ambitious project to date! The James Bond I’m writing as the narrative POV here feels like why I’ve loved James Bond for decades; the stoic spy, the broken man, the hopeful lover, the inveterate manipulator, the skilled fighter, the loyal subject, the shameless hedonist. And on top of all of that, the claustrophobic complexity of an unreliable narrator too busy ignoring his own traumas to see his world clearly. I’m really looking forward to writing the finale of this epic romance-and-revenge tale this Fall!

Please Ask (for Help) (James Bond, 00Q, Teen+, 29k). I think this has been my favorite fic to write. I wrote it based on a super-sweet art prompt of James Bond taking care of injured Q, and that sweetness gave me the excuse to fully indulge in all my favorite tropes: hurt/comfort, pining, and James Bond in love. Is it self-indulgent? Yes. Do I feel a bit exposed by all of the yearning in this fic? Yes. But every inch of this fic feels written ‘for me,’ which I suppose is why I loved every moment of the writing process.

Roman Holiday (Spectre AU, 00Q, Teen+, 2k). This canon-divergence prompt, randomly assigned as part of Festive Fanwork Fiesta, turned out to be the perfect prompt for me. I saw the whole scene instantly and wrote it in a rush of excitement. I’m really proud of the structure and pacing and dialogue and feelings packed into this short scene, not to mention the world of possibilities it opens up for what comes next. In a way I can’t put into words, this one feels like a quintessentially me fic, a perfect exemplar of my style.

Aftershave (The Man from UNCLE, Illya/Napoleon/Gaby, Explicit, 4k). I’m thrilled with how the characterizations and voices turned out in this fic; they feel like they’re straight out of the 2015 movie! For all that it’s an OT3 established relationship, I loved putting Illya into a situation where he has to confront his remaining reservations about Napoleon—the American’s incessant needling, the way his smirks always feel like an insult. And what better time to confront your trust issues (and your partner’s latent trust kink) than when he’s holding a knife to your throat…

A $500 Bottle of Bordeaux (Glam RPF, Adam/Kris, Teen+, 8k). This one’s a real throwback! The first fandom I ever wrote for was American Idol RPF, and even though I haven’t read or written RPF in several years, I have such a soft spot for this particular fic. What starts as a classic meet-cute between a fan and his Broadway-star crush becomes wildly complicated over the course of an intimate dinner party. I love how the four characters all have their own motivations and histories, and none of them are ‘bad’ people, despite the ways they hurt one another; there’s a lot of forgiveness and heart in this fic. The goodnight kiss at the end is some of my most romantic writing, and overall it’s a really hopeful, romantic story that always feels comforting to revisit.

Q allows himself the indulgence of a smile and the next taxi that idles up to them, he flags down. “Peak Road,” he tells the driver. To Bond, “Get in.” This is Hong Kong, and they’re here to kill a man.

this fic is so atmospheric to me as a member of the Asian diaspora and i love it so much.

2. Requiem for the Deathless - nagapdragon

It's MI6's best kept secret, the reason why the Double-0s never seem to die. An enchanted pot of ink that ties one person's life to another, keeping one safe so long as the other survives. One person to protect, the most trusted person in a Double-0's life, and they cannot die. James Bond doesn't know who his is, and he doesn't want to know.

this fic feels like a cool take on a soulmate AU but not quite - it's such a unique and interesting concept and the characterisation is perfect!

3. the places you leave in the dust - thestalwartheart

SPECTRE fix-it where Q deals with the professional and personal consequences of Bond leaving. Continues on to explore the impact of Bond's actions on their relationship.

this series is still ongoing but it really hits a chord in my heart. everything about this fic feels so real, and it made me think about what the true consequences of Bond leaving would be, compared to the usual handwave-y 'it's all fine' most movies adopt. I loved this so much, and I strongly recommend everything on thestalwartheart's backlist!

4. the warmth of your doorways - cicer

James stared gloomily at his papers. "I suppose you could marry me,” Q added, “if you're that desperate to do away with the forms. Otherwise, I'm afraid you'll have to fill them all out." His voice was rich with amusement. Clearly Q thought this was quite a joke. But James paused. He tilted his head. Then he set his pen down. Q tapped away at his keyboard for a bit, then looked up. He promptly blanched. "Oh, good lord. You're not serious, are you?" "It would be convenient." (In which James Bond is a middle-aged spy with a highly adventurous career and promiscuous lifestyle…who kind of wants to settle down, get married, and enjoy a stupidly domestic lifestyle in between missions. Now what?)

As an ace-spectrum person - I absolutely love all of their fics. Connection to me is so important and the slow build and burn of it - ack, it gets to me. This series is also on-going and i'm excitedly waiting for its completion.

I have relatively few works posted so far so I'm only going to rec three that are special somehow. To Tell The Good From Bad, Villains From Heroes Mission fic, 18 chapters, my entry for the 00Q RBB 2021. By far the longest and plottiest fic I've written so far, a NTTD fix-it of sorts, written before the movie even came out. Tenacity Another NTTD inspired piece that doesn't really fix anything, but Bond lives, if only because Q won't let him die. This fic is my personal favourite but also the outlet of all the pain that NTTD caused me, and fairly graphic. You've been warned.

The Best Proof Of Love A crossover with London Spy. WIP but fully plotted and outlined. A close collaboration with Anyawen and I believe, thanks to her, the very best I can produce - even though the reception hasn't quite been what I'd hoped for. It has also been dreadfully difficult to write at times. Still, it remains my feel-good story because I've enjoyed working on it very much and I just love the complicated relationships between all the main characters.

So without further ado, may I present a list of some of my favorite fics based on one of my favorite tropes, James Bond taking care of Q. 🥰 In no particular order:

When the Morning Light Explodes by Mlle_Heloise. A perfect example of a sickfic, and also introduced me to one of my new favorite songs!

Please Ask (for Help) by @samanthahirr. One of my all time favorite fics ever. The slow burn pining while Bond helps Q recover from an injury is just ::chef's kiss::.

then that's what we will have to do by @mr-iskender. Fluff? by Alex??? more likely than you might think! I adore this piece, featuring Bond taking care of an exhausted Q so incredibly much. Also features one of my favorite examples of the "miscommunication/misunderstanding" trope ever.

Where You Are by dhampir72. Another one of my very favorite sickfics ever. The tenderness in this one is everything. Mind the tags, but don't worry about the fact that the fic looks like it's unfinished based on the chapter count--IMHO, it ends in a perfect place.

The Cumulative Effects of Dining In with One's Quartermaster by @dassandre-00qpidsarrow. This fic also features an exhausted/hungry/overworked Q, and it is so gentle and lovely and kind and everything you could possibly want. I love it so much.
