2022 Books I’ve Read
Tumblr media
106/150
Offside with #55 by Piper Rayne
(Hockey Hotties book 6)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My life went from simple to complicated in the span of an hour.
I love the letter to the ARC readers more and more every time, and this one might be my favorite? The future of Florida Fury is upon us, which seems fitting for the last book of the series. Which means it’s bittersweet. Not that this gave me much time to focus on the sad when there was so much perfect tension of the sexual variety going on! As we already know going into this, Kane and Jana are…enjoying each other’s company.  But during Coach’s retirement party, things change in an instant. And suddenly everything Kane and Jana knew was completely changed. I wanted to hug Kane from the get-go. I mean, I’ve always felt like I needed to give him a hug. But definitely now! Our darling goalie is sometimes arrogant, usually cocky, and always confident. But when he goes from player to coach, he’s hesitant, almost lost. And losing Jana to her new job position, well…he’s definitely lost. Especially when she unexpectedly pulls the plug on him, when he was hoping for more. (And this is my first time reading the GUY wanting more while the girl doesn’t, so I enjoyed that aspect.) Even though there’s tension and they’re both unhappy with the situation, that doesn’t mean either of them are ready to let the other go. I found myself saying “you tell her Coach” out loud MULTIPLE times. Because Jana is still her usually cold self. He wouldn’t ever admit to it, but you could tell it really hurt Kane to feel like he was back on the same level as ‘everyone else’. Jana was so out of touch with her friends, herself, the team, and reality. She had so much animosity towards him, as if HE’S the one who called it quits on HER. I went into this still a little upset with Jana. So she had to do a bit of butt kissing for me. Which, I’m happy to say she did. Kane never half asses anything, so after the highest of highs and the lowest of lowest, he’s ready for all in. I loved every moment we got with this friend group. It always makes everything feel special, like we’re part of the fun. The bonus scene…was a perfect send off. I already miss everyone.
My Favorite Quotes:
• “I’ve had a hell of a day. I don’t want egg rolls and lo mein. I want you naked, coming around my c!ck and screaming my name.”
• “I’ve seen you come around my c!ck, my fingers, and my tongue. You’re not going to intimidate me.”
• “When I have you again, I want to know that you’re not going to walk away from me.”
• “I know you want me, and it’s okay if you’re not ready yet.”
• “Come to me open to seeing what this is between us, and you’ll make me the happiest man on this planet.”
• “I never hated you. Not even for a second.”
• “I’m giving you fair warning, if you don’t want to be kissed, move.”
• “God, I feel like I’m in a dream. Tell me I’m not.”
• “Then I’ll take my Cs somewhere else.”
• “Ride me, baby. Just like you used to.”
• ‘I reach for the back of her neck—not to guide her, she’s perfect. I just need to touch her.’
• “I only want one thing for breakfast and that’s you.”
• “Say it again, baby.”
• ‘But I want us to live where we fell in love and that’s where I fell in love with you.’

****************************************
After your less than satisfying encounter in the maintenance closet, you had made an early retirement to your quarters to sulk. You slept, but your dreams were ridden with visions of a certain bleach-blond captain. You awoke the next morning ill-rested and heartsick.
You showed up late to your first tactical meeting with the upper ranks of the 501st in a disgruntled mess of dark undereyes and wrinkled robes. If Rex noticed your sleep-deprived state, he made no mention of it. You had positioned yourself strategically in the back of the room, precisely so if you peeked between the admirals, you could clearly see Rex discussing troop formations with General Skywalker. His structured brow was furrowed, and you noted the way he gestured at the maps as he made his point. He was so much more confident now, so much more self-assured than that often-anxious shiny you remembered from training drills two years ago. Maybe that was why he gave you the cold shoulder yesterday—had he outgrown you? Two years was a long time, especially during a war. Did he find someone new? Your heart burned at the thought. You hadn’t even tried to move on—at times, at your lowest points, you considered it, but you never gave up on him. You had broken your code for him. You had broken it every day since you met him, and yet here he was, the picture of cordial indifference. You were attached, deeply and painfully. Did he still care about you?
“Commander, I can hear your gears turning—any input?” Skywalker looked at you expectantly.
You eased your tired features into a placating smile. “Looks good to me, General,”.
“Perfect. Rex, you’ll go with the commander. I want you two waiting just outside the village. The Separatists should arrive within around two hours of landing. Comm me when you see the Separatist forces coming, and you guys cut down as many of the first wave as possible. I’ll circle around with the rest of the 501st and we’ll finish off the rest from behind. All clear?”
You nod in assent as Rex answers with a decisive, “Yes, sir,”.
***
Rex was going to have to have a conversation with his general after this. Your very first mission with the 501st, and Skywalker had paired you with Rex on a glorified stakeout of all things. Rex was pissed. He had decided as soon as he found out you would be consulting with the 501st that he would keep his distance. He knew it wasn’t your fault that you hadn’t seen each other in years—war makes love near impossible. He was more upset with himself for falling for a Jedi. It was against the law for either of you to have an attachment to each other. Rex had fallen in love, and it was a stupid, shitty idea. He had spent the better part of two years trying to bury his memories of you, and just as he was beginning to succeed, here you were creeping back into his mind. Just the sight of you threw him back to two years ago—back when he was really, truly happy. Rex was built for war, nothing more. The problem with you was that being with you made him think otherwise. When you were together, you would always talk about ‘after the war’. Rex knew that as a clone, there really wouldn’t be an after. You, with your altruism and soft smiles and gentle touches were everything Rex didn’t need.
Rex walked to the pod that would take the pair of you to the Separatist-threatened planet. You were already seated. You thumbed the grip of your lightsaber, and Rex recognized the gesture—it was a habit whenever you were nervous. His eyes were locked on you, debating whether or not he should say something despite his earlier promise to not get involved. You broke the silence for him.
“I can feel you staring, Rex. Talk to me,”.
You could always tell what he was thinking. As your friendship first blossomed, it unnerved him, but as your paths intertwined more and more he found it a comfort to have you understand him so well without him even saying a word. Rex met your eyes, and his stomach clenched. You were still so beautiful. He looked away
“Just thinking about the campaign, sir,”.
Your heart ached. Every bone in your body was screaming, ‘I love you, I love you, I love you,” and yet he called you sir. He addressed you as a superior, another link in the chain of command. He really had moved on, hadn’t he? You bit your lip, the sharp pain of your teeth against the tender skin attempting to draw your attention away from your torturous thoughts. You had a mission to complete. You peeked out the porthole, and you saw the terrain approaching far faster than normal.
You landed with a crash. You were jostled from your seat, your head smacking the metal wall painfully. As the ringing in your skull crescendoed, you took stock of your darkened surroundings through your blurred vision. The lighting in the pod must have been damaged during your landing. You ignited your lightsaber, illuminating Rex with its soft glow. He stood up and rolled his shoulder experimentally, his nose scrunching in pain.
Your brows furrowed, “Are you alright?’
“I’m fine,” He grunted. He felt his way along the walls. “Exit’s been jammed shut, though,”
You searched his eyes in the dim lighting, another pang of longing reverberating through your chest. You dismissed the sensation and plunged your lightsaber into the wall of the pod, freeing yourselves. You emerged from the battered pod, your head pounding as your eyes adjusted. It was bright, with the triad suns beating down on you relentlessly. You checked your positioning system—you had landed a mere 15-minute walk from your stakeout site. You watched as Rex eased himself out of the pod. He groaned, his hand cradling his right arm. You handed him his positioning chip, and the two of you set off towards the village outskirts.
You noticed his hand lingered on his right shoulder, and he would grimace from time to time when it jostled. You reached your hand out to his plastoid-covered shoulder. “Rex, let me—”
“I’m fine,”.
His tone was sharp and dangerous, affecting you like a slap to the face. You sucked in a breath, and walked the rest of the path in silence. The planet was beautiful—you were surrounded on all sides by strange golden grasses that swayed with the breeze. Its beauty did nothing to distract you from the man by your side.
You arrived at the meeting point and immediately settled yourself against the large boulder meant as your cover. Rex sat across from you, leaning against a smaller rock. He tilted his head back, closing his eyes for a moment and swallowing thickly. You traced the sharp line of his jaw with your eyes, following down to the thick cords of muscle in his neck. You contemplated another attempt at offering him some bacta spray, but considering his earlier response, decided against it. When did Skywalker say the Separatists would arrive? Two hours?
You spent around an hour in silence. You meditated, as General Secura had taught you. Time moved thickly around you, your aura burning bright as it cut through the hours and seconds. With your deep focus came little flashes of memories.
You saw Rex, smiling. His golden skin was warm against the soft sheets. His thumb traced the apple of your cheek. You grinned.
“What do you want to do, Rex? After this is all over?”
He paused, his hand resting heavy on your jaw. “I don’t know, cyare. Guess I never really thought about it,”. His eyes flicked over your gentle smile and bright eyes. “I’d wanna be with you, though,” he whispered. You’re everything he could ever want. He’d never loved anything so much, and he knew he’d never love anyone else the way he loved you. What the hell did he do to deserve you? “What about you?”
“My parents—I barely remember them now—had a house on Naboo. We could live there, just us. No war, no fighting. It’s so beautiful there, Rex. The grass is long and tall—as a child, I’d play outside for hours just soaking up the sunlight. It’s a good place for raising children,”. Your face heated as you said the last part.
“Raising children, eh?” Rex tilted your chin, and you lifted your gaze to his eyes. You nodded slowly. “With me?” His eyes shone in the morning sunlight, his brow furrowed.
“Yes, Rex. Who else?” Rex’s expression eased, and you pressed your lips to each of his cheeks, followed by a gentle kiss to the tip of his nose. Rex sighed contentedly. He had no clue why you were with a shiny like him—he was one of a million genetically and physically identical men. He was sure that eventually you’d realize just how much better you could do than a clone, but until that day he’d savor every precious moment with you.
“You’re gonna be a great parent, one day, cyar’ika,”.
“You will, too, Rex,”.
You jolted out of your trance. It was just your luck that Rex had infiltrated the one escape you had from your relentless thoughts of him. You opened your eyes to find him studying your face. He averted his gaze quickly.
“Rex,” you called.
He fiddled with the straps of his armor.
“Rex,”.
He dropped his hands to his sides with a harsh sigh. “Would you just stop it?”
You were stunned. “Rex, I—”
“I spent two fucking years trying to forget I ever loved you. I was nothing, I was nobody, and you were this—this ideal being. I had no fucking clue why you gave me the time of day, but I let myself fall for you anyway. When we left for our tours, I broke. You were the first real thing, the first good thing I ever had, and you were gone. I was sure I was gonna die over there—and you wouldn’t have even known if I had. It was so much easier to believe that you had moved on, that you were through with me. Now you’re here and you’re alive and I—” his voice broke, “I don’t know what to do,”. He met your gaze, and his eyes glistened. His voice was barely a whisper, “You were always the rational one. Please tell me what to do,”.
Your wide eyes watered. You turned your head to the golden fields and let out a tiny sob. What the hell do you answer to that? Just as you opened your mouth to speak, you spotted what seemed to be a thousand metal heads just over a rolling hill. The separatists. You hastily wiped your eyes and took a deep breath. This would have to wait.
“The Separatists are here,” your voice wavered more than you would have liked. “I’ll comm the General,”. You sniffed, rubbing your eyes again. Get it together, you thought. You were a Jedi Master, for gods’ sake. Ever since returning to Coruscant, you’d been an emotional trainwreck. You were starting to see why the council discouraged attachments.
You allowed Rex a moment to collect himself, turning to face the oncoming droids as the two of you prepared in silence. The metallic clang of their footsteps grew louder and louder. Rex slipped his helmet back on over his head and unholstered his blasters.
“It’s your call, Commander. When d’ya wanna go?”
You looked back over your shoulder at him, and you were instantly thrown back to the hours of training exercises you had completed together. You grinned.
“Think you can take down the battle tank over there?” You motioned to the gargantuan hunk of steel situated right in the middle of a sea of battle droids.
The competitive edge you had so dearly missed was back in Rex’s voice.
“You know I never miss,”.
“Race you there,”. And with that, you were off. The two of you flew down the hill, cutting down the droids as if they were made of straw. You swung, decapitating a droid and ducking as Rex put a blaster hole through the one taking aim at you from behind. You worked well together, always did. The rest of the 501st seemed to be making easy work of the droids from behind.
“Rex, blaster!”
Rex tossed one of his blasters into the air, and you force-pulled it into your grasp in an instant. You fired off three quick shots at one of the tanks, damaging the traction treads. Rex looked over at the tank, and recognized the maneuver you had initiated in an instant. He took off for the tank, and called your name once he was just yards from its base.
“Saber!”
You switched off your saber and hurled it in Rex’s direction. He had barreled past at least ten lines of troops, snatching your lightsaber from the air before igniting it and plunging it into the battle tank’s generator while simultaneously firing off a few rapid shots at the droids. The droids’ main attention, as planned, was on you, and you were beginning to feel the heat. You force-pulled your lightsaber, still ignited, from Rex’s grasp and into a line of battle droids before its heavy weight met your palm again.
“Blaster!”
You tossed Rex his blaster, and he caught it with ease. With your lightsaber in hand, you began cutting a path to Rex, who had holed up against the decommissioned tank.
“Need to get me one of those,” Rex motioned to your lightsaber with a grin.
You shook your head with a laugh, deflecting a blaster shot as Rex took aim at the next line of droids.
It was your fault. You got distracted. Something about the focus in Rex’s masked stare as he picked off the droids one-by-one pulled your attention away just long enough for one of the droids to press the cool metal of its blaster against your neck. Before you could react, Rex fired two quick shots into its head.
“Told you, cyare, I never miss,”.
You missed this. The nicknames, the banter, working together like this. It felt good. It felt like coming home. You snuck one last glance at Rex before sprinting out from your cover to cut down the next row of droids.
Rex was fucked. Did you realize he called you cyare? It just slipped out—something about being here with you, fighting next to you—it brought him back to two years ago. He shook his head, firing at a droid that had pointed its blaster at you. He was done with pretending he didn’t care. He still had no idea what to do, or where this would go, but he could figure that out later.
You finished off the last droid, looking back at Rex with an easy smile before waving to General Skywalker. Rex jogged over to you, pulling you back behind the tank and away from the prying eyes of the rest of the 501st.
“Rex, wha—”
He ripped off his helmet, letting it fall to the ground as he pulled you into a kiss. His hand fell to the small of your back, and you practically collapsed into him. His lips were hungry against yours—he was all tongue and teeth and desperation. He needed this. You needed this. You raked your nails through his close-cropped hair, drawing a little groan from deep in his chest. His hands were everywhere—your hair, your neck, your waist—
“Rex, where are you? Are you injured?”
For the second time today, Rex was going to kill his general. He pulled away from you reluctantly, his hand lingering on your waist. You take his hand, and press your lips to his palm.
“We should go,”. Rex nods. “Meet me in my quarters tonight—you still like firewhiskey?”
“Rex—are you over here?”
You meet Rex’s eyes, and he smiles. A real smile. “I’ll see you tonight?”
“See you tonight,”.

FINAL SPACE EP CHAMBER OF DOUBT LETS GO *SPOILERS*
Let's get the lighter parts out of the way:
gay -> gary carressing avocato's pecs for No Fucking Reason?? gay
love -> gary and avocato's interactions when trying to figure if ash was bad
milf -> sheryl goodspeed (i will announce this every time even if she only had like one line this episode)
i lowkey really like orb guy. i forgot his name but his whole thingamaboo is really cool
ok THEORY TIME - please go look at @unus-annus-will-live-on 's theory it's sexy and better written
this isn't really a theory but a train of thought and Can We Address Gary's Mental State right now?
man was abandoned by his mom at an early age
dad fucking dies the most bold-faced tragic death of all time
man goes to jail ISOLATED IN SPACE!! FOR 5 FUCKING YEARS!! with n o human (or I guess living) contact or interaction
only to then get thrust into a bullshit space fic where he has to fight aliens
his best friend (made from the lowest standards possible) fucking dies
not-gf gets taken into an alternate dimension
so does his PLANET
he gets trapped in alt dimension, gf about to die, takes on agonizing pain, gets separated, sees his mom again, loses child, the list goes on and on this man is nottttt mental stable dawggggg
he can't. no way. absolutely not
and now: he kills fox against his will. after he was already Possessed by invictus
this man was already Barely holding on and Obviously not processing his emotions one bit. he would rather jump off a bridge than admit anything (maybe that's why i love him so much). this has to be the last straw
but then we have episode 8? which is supposed to be the Hardest episode for any of the creators to voice act?? after we say avo and gary FIGHT in the trailer? nah this man is gonna lose it
in the earlier theory I mentioned, they made the great point that invictus would Want gary alone because he is the literally glue that holds everything together. throughout the show we keep getting reminded of gary's importance (even this ep from the insane bolos) and with the amount of therapy this man fucking needs? i won't be surprised if he just ups and leaves to 'protect the crew'
isn't a repeating thing that 'gary will be the end to everything'? let's not forget the Looks he keeps giving every time he hears it (also the LOOKS!! Am I supposed to believe this man is not doubting himself to the MAX right now??????????)
like are we honest to god supposed to believe this man loves himself? he already blames himself for Everything so ash being upset with him for something he did Technically do? i wouldn't be surprised if he needs little convincing from invictus (or anyone) to leave the crew at this point. or maybe just himself. this man is so self sacrificing that he would see this as a way to protect them or make them happy. cause would he really want to make anyone 'suffer' around him?
maybe i'm wrong and gary still has confidence and happiness left in him. but i would not be shocked
(this episode is so painful this isn't even half of what i want to yell about but i have to stop at some point)
(also are we gonna address the little-cato-is-over-60-years-old thing soon or what)

Pidge - the heroine with Schrödinger problems
Tumblr media
Translated and edited by @Nadezhda932
I think it's worth saying a few words about Pidge, because as far as it seems no one ever spoke about the problems of her character. Actually, even her creator, Lauren Montgomery, after the release of S8 with greatly changed original script began to insist that Pidge was fine and had no flaws. Although Pidge's problems were voiced by Keith in the first episodes of the series. This is absolute indifference to everyone who is beyond her personal circle of people, everyone she doesn't like or cares. “You can’t leave everyone to the mercy of fate for the sake of personal desires!” - says Keith, who, with all his teenage issues and egoism, is a very responsible guy (that very trait which will help him grow to the Black Paladin over time). “I really can!” - Pidge answers confidently.
Tumblr media
Pidge is a supporting character, but her problem was announced almost immediately. Why? Because she is the favorite character of the main screenwriter, Lauren Montgomery. A good screenwriter knows that a hero without flaws and problems is of no interest to anyone. You know, there is an interesting point in that Lions (with the exception of White and Black) are in many respects opposed to each other. And if the first and most obvious coupling is Red and Blue, then the coupling of Yellow and Green is in the background and remains invisible, although it was also shown quite early. The Yellow Lion is a self-confident rock, a support for others. The strongest and most massive of all. If Blue is the one who consoles and wipes away tears (healer in game terminology), then Yellow, as a powerful shield, will take all the fire upon himself (tank). Do you need to be reminded of what happens if a healer or a tank falls in a game during a raid on Boss? It’s shitty, despite the fact that they have the lowest attack in the group.
Tumblr media
The first appearance of Yellow is marked by the fact that he stands between the Blue and the enemy as a shield.
The Green Lion is ... an extravagant scientist, shallow and fidgety. This one will not protect anyone, but will crawl anywhere and achieve her goal. She doesn't have a powerful attack, but she has a trick. In game terminology, she would be called an assassin-horn, the most insidious class (that's who exactly from the ninja clan ...). He is an even greater loner than Red - who, although selfish, is held by Black, as his right hand. The Green Lion is on her mind, her motives are not always understood by others, but she doesn't want to be understood.
Tumblr media
It's funny that the paladins always used Green to sneak past the Galra imperceptibly
Paladins reflect their Lions. Hunk, despite his fears, immediately stood up for the inhabitants of Balmera, simply because if not him, then who? He is the person who is ready to stand up for the first comers if he sees that they need his help. It doesn’t matter: Galra, humans or some new unknown race. Hunk is a born negotiator, he knows how to understand people and is always ready to make contact. And Pidge is... his exact opposite. She was ready to abandon everyone who depend on her, for the sake of saving her father. What about establishing contact with strangers... it's not something that she can't do, she simply doesn't want to. She always says what she thinks, not caring how much it hurts others. Do you remember how she said to Allura something like: "Your father is dead, but my one is alive"? Can you imagine how painful it was for Allura to hear this?
Tumblr media
Allura couldn't have done that. And it’s a pity, in S6 it would be very useful to her.
And this is her problem. This is a problem for many children spoiled by their parents. After all, these are the roots of Pidge's behavior. Let's recall her childhood. Katie is a special girl from a special family: brilliant scientists, not like everyone else. Because of this, she had conflicts with her classmates - but on the other hand, the family itself nurtured and cherished her, assuring that it was good to be special. “You are exceptional and that’s wonderful" - they said. Forgetting that there's nothing remarkable in the inability to communicate with peers in a normal way. And that surely the conflict was not only one-sided - sorry, but Pidge isn't made of sugar. No wonder her entire company in the Garrison consisted of Lance and Hunk - VERY flexible and patient ones in communicating with other people. Blue and Yellow paladins, remember. But the problem was ignored, it was solved by stroking the daughter on the head. The girl was cherished, the girl was spoiled. The girl is a genius, which means that everything is excusable to her. The girl abandoned her mother without hesitation and fled, for the sake of the mythical opportunity to save her father and brother. Think about it: what it was like for this unfortunate woman? The husband and son went missing, and the daughter followed them. And not for a day, not for a week. For months and years.
Tumblr media
Pidge didn't think about it. Pige didn't want to think about it. And this is a problem that remained unresolved. You know, a person’s character is revealed when he or she doesn't need to hold the face. When he or she isn't obliged to establish good relations, when this person is the master of the situation. And the authors directly showed us how deplorable the situation is with Pidge. Do you understand what I'm talking about? I'm talking about the very scene when the issue of giving of Lotor to Zarkon was being decided.
Tumblr media
Stop the planet, I’ll come off... quiznak, it's all the same in the entire universe.
There is something very significant in that Lotor then stood in front of the paladins without a helmet, face to face. More precisely - eye to eye. Since this is very important. Stormtroopers in Star Wars, Galra soldiers in VLD series, and even quite real death row in modern China - they all have their heads covered. At least the eyes. Because it depersonalizes a person. No personality - no empathy. You can abstract from it, you can stop considering this man alive. He's not the same person as you, which means that there's nothing wrong with his murder. That's why the scene where an inanimate robot takes off his helmet and turns into a person with eyes - windows into the soul - is always very important in any motion or animated picture. He is now a person. He is alive. You need to step over yourself to raise your hand on him, and his death is no longer something insignificant for the plot. And now a little girl of 14 y.o. screams almost with foam at her mouth, demanding that this living person - completely dependent on the decisions of the paladins - must be put to death.
Tumblr media
I need to say, the rest of the team was slightly shocked too.
Didn’t you have a jump in your soul? No thoughts about Christian values, psychological barriers to killing a person. Well, you know, about things that should seem to matter in our culture. I understand that Pidge wanted to save her father. But I absolutely can't accept how easily she was ready to kill Lotor, who completely depended on the mercy of the paladins and didn't show any aggression towards her. Like, "if I didn’t shoot him myself, but through third parties, everything is normal"? The hands ard clean and conscience too. After all, the latter snores sweetly. Of course, you can say about the enemy, and that there's no place for compassion, but you're the paladins, not unprincipled Galra. You're the good guys. Or not so good anymore? Even from a position of profit and simple logic, the Galra prince could bring much more benefit in war than a scientist with an industrially backward (from the point of view of the universe) Earth. But what benefit, what compassion we're talking about. "Give me dad back!" and that’s it. As a result, the paladins didn't even think of giving Lotor at least some (!) chance for the rescue. They didn't come up with at least some plan. They stupidly decided to give him to Zarkon, knowing that for Lotor this was a one-way ticket, and knowing that with a high probability Zarkon would deceive them - that is, Lotor's death could be in vain. Bayard was given to Lotor by Kuron, after Haggar ordered to activate the third phase. Haggar didn't want Lotor's death. And this is a big problem, actually. Because Haggar-Honerva herself showed how dangerous a brilliant, but unprincipled scientist is. But if Honerva became so because of quintessence, then Pidge is a direct result of improper upbringing. Alas, in this series this problem wasn't solved. Because the entire story arc of Pidge in S8 was cut out. What was this arc? The realization that not the whole world revolves around you. That not only your interests matter. That you can objectively be wrong with others, and you must be able to admit your wrong. Simply put, the Pidge's arc must be connected to two figures: The first figure is a figure embodying one-sided attachment for Pidge. Love without bestowal, as it often happened with the love of parents to Pidge herself. The second figure is an absolutely alien person for Pidge who is not in the circle of loved ones. Pidge was often rude with such people, and she must realize how wrong this behavior was. Who are these figures? I think the answer to this question is not difficult: Lance and Lotor. Pidge got used to the fact that all the people who are not indifferent to her revolve around her. In particular, Lance and Hunk. But in his chase for Allura, Lance began to move more and more away from his friends. They ceased to be Garrison Trio from the first seasons, who used to do everything together.
Tumblr media
Nothing unites people like a joint escape from the cops... at least it used to unite.
For Pidge, this was very unusual. And very hard. Especially the moment when Lance, with the help of his "retinue", invited Allura on a date. Now they're not a company of friends - Hunk, Pidge and Lance. Now Lance is with Allura, and they're somewhere on the side. Pidge feels that for an important person she is now in second place. And she really has a hard time feeling it. She's used to take care of loved ones, and she continues to take care of Lance. But she has to personally face what you feel when your care isn't appreciated and remains unnoticed. When your love is taken for granted and never comes back. She's in the place of her own mother, whom she so easily abandoned, ignoring the fact that her mother might worry about her.
Does it hurt? Yes. But it's necessary. Alas, this part of the plot was never developed. There's nothing to talk about Lotor, remembering the events that I described above. Do you remember the paladins apologizing to him? No, you don't, because it never happened. And Lotor - oh, such a bad guy - forgave them and pretended that everything was fine, just an everyday matter. Lotor is used to the fact that people around him treat him like a piece if crap. He forgave the generals, forgave the paladins. He forgives everyone, what a vile bastard he is. But since the entire arc of justification or redemption - no matter - of Lotor was cut out, the whole arc of Pidge was cut out too, the arc where she realizes her wrong. There's no awareness of wrong - there's no rethinking of oneself as a person. No growth, no development. Pidge remained convinced that everything she had done was right. And it's just awful, because the children see it. They see and find something close to themselves in Pidge. And they see the message - yes, that’s right, that’s okay. Then these children will grow up and some of them will become not a small Pidge, but a big Haggar. And it won't be funny at all.

Reasons: a T-rated McKirk story
featuring Angst (with a happy ending) and James T. Kirk’s self-esteem issues. And a couple of swears.
Also on AO3
“It’s not even worth thinking about, Jim, what’s anyone gonna see in a guy like me anyway.”
It’s not even a question. For a moment Jim is speechless, because it’s the most ridiculous thing he’s ever heard and Bones just accepts it. Downs the last of his drink and gets up to use the head with a sigh. Like he’s so sure he’s right, except-
“You know that- that’s not true, don’t you?” Jim asks when Bones returns to his seat, on the couch in Jim’s quarters, only to be regarded with an expression of vague surprise.
“What isn’t?”
“You know that- you could have anyone you wanted. Don’t you?”
The answer, such as it is, just consists of Bones looking at him like he’s gone mad. Jim is sort of concerned he’s fallen into a parallel universe where everyone except for him is an idiot.
“Bones. You’re a catch.”
“Sure, on paper.”
“No! I mean, well, yeah. But not just on paper. Because sure, you’re a doctor and you helped save the planet or whatever, but you’re more than that. You know that.”
Bones pours himself another drink. Jim declines another of his own. He feels like he needs to communicate as clearly as he can. The look in Bones’ eyes is something like a challenge, but Jim never backs down from those.
“I don’t even know where to start- actually, wait, yes I do, because you say it all the time and it really bothers me. The washed-up country doctor thing. You are an amazing doctor. So yes, okay, you got fired from one hospital when you were at literally the lowest stage in your life, battling pretty much all of the worst things anyone can go through. That’s understandable!
“And maybe you did join Starfleet on a drunken whim, but I did it on a fucking dare and I’ll still admit it’s the best thing that ever happened to me. Okay, second best, but we’ll circle around to that one. You work so hard every day. You do things most doctors can’t even imagine. You’ve invented techniques that even now are saving lives across the galaxy and don’t you dare say they don’t-” because Bones opens his mouth as though to argue, and then begrudgingly closes it again. “Because I read your mail so I know there’s a Vaynol mother and daughter out there who were saved by your research just yesterday.”
Bones does get a few words in then. “A Vaynol is a breed of cow.”
“Is it? Well, that was a bad example. But my point still stands.”
“And stop reading my mail.”
“I wouldn’t have to if I didn’t have to prove points like these! Next, the divorce. Yes, I know. You see that as a huge personal failing. But you know nobody else does, right? You were so young. Nobody would have blamed you for giving up. But you held on, and you were faithful. Do you have any idea what that means, in times like this? I have never met anybody who would try so hard to keep their relationship going because it was the right thing to do. She screwed you over, real bad, and you still won’t hear a bad word said about her! That respect and loyalty- it’s amazing.”
Bones is silent, watching him. It’s very disconcerting. It means he’s either really listening, or really not.
“And Joanna does not hate you. She misses you. But she’s old enough to understand what you do. She reads every one of your messages, watches every vid you send. And you know she’s somewhere safe. You would never let anything happen to her. She knows that she can talk to you about anything and yeah, maybe it’ll take a couple of weeks for her to get a reply but there always is one. I don’t know if you realise how much that all means.”
Shit. Jim has to blink a few times to clear moisture from his eyes, takes a fortifying sip of his drink because this is turning into so much more than the pep talk he had planned, but he can’t stop yet.
“What else? You’re always telling me you’re old and bitter. Well, I don’t buy it. You act that way, sometimes, but it’s not who you are. You were hurt, and yeah, I know it’s difficult to admit that. But you are also the gentlest person I know. I’ve seen you make an Ensign cry over their own stupidity in one breath and ease another through the treatment for an open fracture in the next. You got Pike through his recovery, listened to every terrible thing he had to say in those months it took us to limp back to Earth. You remember birthdays, even though they’re in everyone’s file. You’ve been talking to Chekov about the panic attacks he thinks I haven’t noticed.
“And you- always know what I need. Do you have any idea how many people, in my entire life, have hugged me? You just care, so damn much. I think you wish you were bitter, because it would make it easier, but- well, I’m sorry. You have saved everyone on this ship, including me, multiple times. And not medically. Although that, too.
“I think that’s most of it. Just one more thing- have you even looked in a mirror recently? Or- ever? Because- holy shit, I am not kidding, you are objectively the most attractive person I have ever met. You are a ten, straight up, and I have no idea how you don’t see it. Okay, that might actually be part of it, in that way that being aware of how attractive you are actually makes you less attractive, case in point-” Jim gestures to himself, gets a quirk of Bones’ brow in response. “And it’s not even the doctor thing, the uniform and the hair and the posture and that face you make when you hate someone but you’re trying not to tell them. You are hot just rolling out of bed or stumbling in from work. Do you want to know the real reason I transferred Yeoman Barnes from Medical to Engineering? He got no work done because he was so flustered around you that he couldn’t even hold a tricorder.
“And as for what’s under the uniform? There are not even words. You should have your own fucking calendar because your body is astounding. How are you slim and broad at the same time?”
Jim takes a deep, reviving breath. He feels light, like he’s just finished a therapy session.
For another moment, Bones is silent. Then he snorts. “You’ve got all that to say, maybe I should be dating you.”
Jim freezes, glass halfway to his mouth, because fuck. He has been desperately obvious, has finally snapped and- “Maybe you should.”
Bones just stares at him. His eyes are wide, beautiful. Jim could have mentioned that too, but even his ridiculous, lovestruck brain apparently recognised it would have been a step too far.
He lowers his glass. His heart is pounding in genuine terror because he could be doing what he has for years promised himself he wouldn’t allow himself to even contemplate. He could ruin everything with those words, could lose his friendship with Bones and a piece of himself along with it.
But even he has to admit there will never be a better moment. He will never again be laid so bare and Bones deserves that, has earned that right to hold Jim’s beating heart in the palm of his hand. Whatever happens next, Jim tells himself, he will be okay with it.
Bones is still staring. Jim only hopes it can be possible that it’s in a good way, lifts his chin but cannot find the confidence to harden his eyes. He lets -makes- himself stay vulnerable instead, has no idea what Bones can see in his face but knows that at least it’s honest.
Every second, another fragment of hope breaks away and dies in Jim’s chest. Jim has never known Bones to have so little to say.
Bones looks shattered, when he finally manages to ask, “Are you asking me out?”
Jim can’t help it, his lips twitch upwards. Of course Bones is just as dense about this as he is about everything Jim’s already had to explain. But his confidence, so usually infallible, is deserting him. Jim has fought to save planets but none of it has carried the weight of what he could be saying in that moment. “Are you saying yes?”
It makes Bones huff, exasperated. “Don’t give me that. Are you asking, or not?”
It’s an out. Jim should take it. “Yes.”
“Why?”
Jim’s heart feels like it’s breaking. It’s so much easier to find words when Bones looks at him like he can’t possibly understand why Jim would want him. “Because I’ve loved you forever.” Jim had thought it would feel good to say it, to set it free, but it hurts, hurts worse than dying and regretting never having said it at all. “Because you’re the only thing that makes my life worth living, some days. I mean everything I’ve said. Anyone would be lucky to have you, and you deserve so much better, but-” Jim has to be honest, has to, even though he hates himself for it. “I want to be selfish with just this one thing. I want you to be mine.”
Tears fall, unhindered, because Jim will not look away, will not miss an instant of the moment that could make or break him, that determines his future. He’ll forever define his life as times with Bones, and without. If he’s honest, he has done for a while now.
“I thought you didn’t believe in love.”
It’s a fair point. Jim manages a watery smile. “I don’t believe in love at first sight. And- I did not love you when you threw up on me. So to say forever, I guess, is hyperbole. It just feels that way because loving you is a part of me that goes so deep it feels like it’s always been there. It makes me better. You make me better. That was- when I said before that Starfleet was the second best thing to ever happen to me. You’re the first.”
Bones is back to staring, confused, surprised, horrified. Jim looks away, then, stares down at the empty glass in his hands. Bones’ is still full. They’re both way too sober to pretend none of this conversation ever happened. It’s probably for the best. In the long-term. Whatever that means.
“Why did you keep this from me?”
It’s valid, of course it is, but Jim wishes Bones would give him an answer instead of more questions. It’s tearing him up inside, not knowing, and he gets a little less hopeful with every moment. With no words to quite sum up his many and varied reasons, Jim settles for gesturing to himself, blotchy and red-eyed and emotional and fucked up as he is, lets that serve as his response.
It doesn’t exactly work. There’s still no answer, but at least Bones’ expression softens and he reaches out with those wonderful, gentle hands to pull Jim into a hug. He’s so solid and warm and Jim has never understood how he can feel so at home in a place he doesn’t feel like he deserves. It might be the last time he ever does. He clings, and he sobs, because he swore he’d never do either of those things with anybody, and Bones just holds him tighter instead of shoving him away like he should. He’s perfect.
“I love you so much,” Jim chokes out without having realised he was going to, because he can’t live with the doubt, the regret, anymore, of Bones not knowing that he is loved, even if it’s only Jim. “I’m sorry.”
“No.” Bones sounds pretty wrung out too, presses his cheek against Jim’s hair. “Don’t you ever apologise for feeling, Jim Kirk. I won’t stand for it.”
Well, how could that do anything but make Jim cry harder? He has never cried in anyone’s arms before; he’s not much of a crier and there were never arms. All he knows is that he can’t lose this.
Bones just holds him, one big hand on the back of Jim’s neck, thumb rubbing through the hair at his nape. It’s soothing, and he doesn’t shush, just waits until Jim has stopped shaking, and then pulls back just enough to look at him. Jim looks terrible, feels worse, but Bones’ soft smile is worth everything.
“We’re going to be a real mess of a couple, you know?”
Jim stops breathing. He’s light-headed before he can get out a stunned, “What?”
“Well, neither of us have exactly dated before. I was married, and you’ve done- whatever it is you do.”
“Did,” Jim corrects, has to. Bones’ gorgeous smile takes on a curious tilt until Jim adds, “I don’t do that any more.”
It’s Bones’ turn to look stunned, although in a good way, Jim thinks. It’s really the least Jim can do, and it’s not like he’s been able to think of anyone but his best friend in years. He’s made token attempts to forget but mostly accepted that Bones is it, for him.
Jim doesn’t know if it’s his words or the way his thoughts show in his expression, but that’s when Bones leans in and kisses him. Even as he somehow finds the coordination to kiss back, Jim whimpers, because it’s all he’s wanted for so long and it’s perfect right down to the taste of bourbon on Bones’ lips. Jim doesn’t deserve this, he never has, but he trusts Bones to decide for him in that moment. What matters is that he feels like a part of himself has slotted into place, filling a void he’d thought he’d have forever. Bones’ lips are warm and soft and he’s close enough that Jim can touch his chest and marvel at finally being allowed, at not having to feel guilt every time he aches to tell Bones he’s beautiful.
It can’t go on for long. Jim’s been crying and he can’t breathe through his nose and he is a complete disaster, but Bones knows that already. He knows Jim better than anyone, and he still wants him. Jim can hardly believe it. He settles back, just far enough away from Bones to be comfortable.
“Also you have great taste in men,” he ventures, and Bones’ fond exasperation is reassuringly familiar. They can do this.

"I'm really grateful to my fans. They are as precious as the air to me. We can't live without air, not even for a moment. Without fans, Super Junior can't also exist." - Leeteuk
"You may say it's such nonsense, but I always liked Super Junior's balloon color. Pearl Sapphire Blue. Until pearl sapphire blue covers the entire planet, Super Junior will continue to perform." - Leeteuk
"Our ELF, Ever.Lasting.Friends...the friends that walked beside Super Junior since we debuted and even the name of the fanclub, are all made from us. To say the truth, I used to not like blue, but after forming Super Junior && meeting ELF, no matter where I go there are people asking me what color I like, I will say I love sapphire blue. It is not ELF who was poisoned by Super Junior, it is Super Junior who was poisoned by ELF. Everytime the internet has some untruthful news, the fans tell us, 'Oppa, didnt you tell us you would be truthful to us? Why did you lie?' Truthfully, I feel very bad. I really want to go on a live show to tell everyone, 'ELF I AM INNOCENT! Why do you have to believe those words. Believe what I say!' But I was afraid, so I didnt say anything. I wanted to explain to everyone. When the members are sick, they cry together with us. When we are happy, they smile with us. Although there are a lot of high school students in ELF, but once Super Junior's age gets older and older ELF will also follow and get older and older. If Super Junior becomes an old group and come out to sing, ELF will bring their own kids and introduce us as their favorite hyung or oppa in the past. When I think of these times, I feel very happy. ELF && SUPER JUNIOR ARE INSEPARABLE. Life couples or partners. I LOVE YOU ALL!" - Kangin
"When we feel very tired, and see everyone's happy smile from the stage, waiting for us, it gives us even more courage and become our strength. Although I am very thankful to the people that directly helped me, the people i should really thank is ELF." - Yesung
"Just like the words ELF, they are everlastingfriends. I always assumed that nothing in this world could be everlasting, but everytime we feel tired, our fans always support us. When we, 13 members, as Super Junior debuted, even though we started as 12, we suffered through many suspicions of the skills of so many members. They asked, "Can they succeed? Can they do it?" A lot of people asked these questions. Changing the question mark into an exclamation mark was our ELF. Truthfully, many people around me also told me to not be stubborn about popularity and the responses of fans, and gave me a quote. "Popularity is only for a moment."I thought about what it really meant. Because I didn't know when popularity will come and go. If you are too stubborn about that. Then your hope is destroyed, you become tired. Or you reach your lowest point. You won't be able to get back up again. But I believe in every one of ELF. To me, I can believe. As long as there are the Super Junior members & ELF, Even though I usually see everyone on TV. It is not only because of Super Junior. If there was no ELF, I would become empty. To me, ELF is like Super Junior...they are my heart and lungs. I love you all <3" - Leeteuk
"Our fans, ELF is where our strength comes from. Really, if there was no ELF, there would not be us. Without us, there would not be ELF as well. Like the dependence of Super Junior & ELF on eachother, I want everyone to feel like one. ELF and us come together as one, completing more and better stages & performances. I want it to start now. it is already the 2nd album now. We will be more hardworking until the day comes when ELF and us become one. Hope the will continue forever." - Shindong
"Elf..many celebrities probably think that fanclubs are just fanclubs but there are other who don't. to me, it is not only a fanclub anymore. it has already become a very important existance. no matter if i'm having a hard or happy time, fans really give me alot of strength. i am really thankful to them. because of the fans, i have cried many times and have had many happy times. the same when i see the comments in the fancafe. the best elf fan of lee hyukjae. there are alot of comments like that. like this, i am very happy. very happy that people like me. of course I also sing for others but when i'm old i hope i can still sing and dance for all of the fans. i hope that we are not the same as other singers. hope that we can become even closer. every time we finish our performance, we think of ways to meet our fans more and play with them.ther are times when we let the staff become very tired, but it's because we love our fans so much.hope that we will forever maintain this kind of relationship." - Eunhyuk
"Our elf is really too cute. in our group, because leeteuk is the leader, he lets me depend on him. but if i am alone without any members, my vigor truthfully comes from elf. if there was no elf, there would be inexpressible space the feeling of not knowing what to do and loneliness. our elf is like our SJ's everlastingfriends, our beloved girlfriends, lovers? this is what I think" - Sungmin
"ELF brings me self-confidence and courage. Because there is ELF, Super Junior can have something to depend upon, build up confidence, and create courage. ELF is a rest station that we can depend upon." - Kibum
"The existence of ELF is like the heart and air of Super Junior. They are like the air that is most important for people to survive...It is like people who cannot live without air. We are the same. Without fans, we cannot survive. Like this, fans are the most important to me, just like air. " - Siwon
"Like the words say, ELF are like friends, like nunas, like hyungs, or dongsaengs. It seems like it is different from the past. Celebrities from the past have an invisible wall between them and their fans. They have a definite distance. But now, it really is like friends since the internet has developed. They can more or less see our personal lives. Although it is like this, they won't have a heart to satisfy themselves and get close to us. Instead they will worry about us and comfort us. It is also the same between E.L.F. If someone says, "Oh, today I did bad on my school exam," The other fans will encourage them. Looking at this, I am very happy. Even though it is because of Super Junior that ELF can gather together, They can also become good friends. And a very good affinity. We Thank you. Being able to blindly see us. ELF doing what bthey are supposed to; keeping with the rules. To say it again, the freedom of following rules is the most beautiful. Even though if there is no Super Junior, there would not be an ELF fanclub, if we turn to another perspective, the relationship has already become. If there is not ELF fanclub, there will not be SUPER JUNIOR." - Heechul
 "To. ELF, Super Junior's girlfriend that loves just Super Junior;
Since that time when we first met until now, there hasn't been a time when I didn't think of you.
You've always watched over us warmly, held our hand and picked us up when we fell. Told us not to cry and wiped our tears away when they fell.
Always moving us deeply by appearing anywhere like Superman without growing weary.
Telling us it's okay when we show an ugly side of us; thank you for even loving and caring for that side of us.
Because of you I feel like I am always smiling and crying.
Don't say the words "thank you" to us.
Because the people who are eternally thankful are us.
Again, thank you and thank you again.
Starting now as the time goes by, even when I'm 30 years, 40 years, 50 years old, I would like to remember and cherish this current time and smile.
Although there may be lots of dread, and many hard times coming up, I'll think of ELF and try to endure it all and work hard.
I will continue to ask for your favor.
Wherever, I will be the unashamed Donghae and Super Junior.
There's the thing that I always say, right?
This is something that I really ask of you, even if nothing else matters, please just don't be sick.
Let's make more amazing memories in 2008.
Once more I bow in thanks and I love you."
- Donghae
"At this moment, I feel like I own the whole world.
Whether good or bad times. We've experienced it together.
Sometimes I feel apologetic and sorry to you all.
If we can be like now, crying and laughing together always
When I become older, we will all become older
So at that time, we will have to be together
because we exist for each other, right?
I love you all."
- Kangin
"To me, it is an existence that cannot be missing. It is the strongest army in the roads upcoming. They give us lots of love. No matter if it's a happy or tough time, they will stand by our side. Even if we made a big mistake, they will stand by our side. It is an existence that we can't not have." - Kyuhyun
"Can be described as partners? If there was no E.L.F, there wouldn't be me. Without me, there would not be E.L.F. They are friends that continue to have a good relationship with us. Everlasting Friends. All E.L.F. I really thank everyone." - Ryeowook
"Thank you for making me shine." - Leeteuk
"Because E.L.F exists, Super Junior is eternal." - Heechul
"All the more important E.L.F. Thank you so much and I love you." - Hankyung
"Everlasting, reliable defender, E.L.F...I love you." - Yesung
"As like we started together, lets put up the end together." - Kangin
"I hope we can be one forever." - Shindong
"Super Junior can sing because of E.L.F's support." - Sungmin
"You guys are so precious to me. Don't change..." - Eunhyuk
"I will keep in my heart even after I die, the fact I met E.L.F." - Donghae
"They are like oxygen." - Siwon
"Everlasting friends that I can be with keeping a mutual relationship." - Ryeowook
"They encourage me and inspire me." - Kibum
"They are the existence that has to be there with us." - Kyuhyun

Hey, could you do a description of my chart? 💗 I’m a scorpio sun, aquarius moon, sag ascendant, scorpio mercury, venus and lilith, virgo Mars, pisces jupiter, aries Saturn, aquarius uranus, Capricorn neptune and sag pluto. Thank youuu 💖
So I left out a few generational planets, mostly because you didn’t include houses, which is completely fine lol but it’s harder to interpret Pluto for someone especially when it applies to a whole generation—if you know what I mean haha.Scorpio sun- Passionate and complex. Usually very attractive and magnetic. Most of the ones I know are funny as hell lmao. You guys have depth to you and give off this vibe that makes others feel at ease. You can make anyone feel special. Aquarius moon- Emotions are something you may shy away from. You may prefer logic to emotions. You are very creative and likable. You are genius! You may have novel insights. You can be detached but you can also really empathize with others. You are a leader. Sag ascendant- Born philosopher. You approach life ready to tackle new challenges, mostly for the sake of growing and gaining wisdom. You are fun to be around and usually inspire and encourage others quite easily. You are a forever optimist. Scorpio mercury- Deep thinker. You have profound insights. A lot of what you say has a dark element to it. You may often shock the hell out of people. You aren’t afraid to go deeper and beneath the surface. You’ll discuss sex, death, psychology, anything that has the ability to bring strong reactions. Your voice tends to have an element of ‘sex’ in it. You can be a smooth talker and you may have a sexy/raspy voice. Scorpio venus- Intense intimate relationships. Intimacy for you is about breaking barriers and giving yourself over to someone completely. Your attachments are strong and often severe with an element of pain almost. Love may cause suffering but it transforms and teaches you about yourself too. You are wildly attractive and alluring. You have no problem attracting others. In love you can feel a strong infatuation with your partner often wanting to spend every moment with them just getting to know the core of their being. Your ability to easily relate to others is what makes you so damn interesting. Scorpio lilith- Exploiting and manipulating others may be something you partake in to further your own agenda. You are a very guarded person and if you feel threatened you go into fight mode ready to tear anyone down. You are intense and have a searing aura around you. If you go down, you’re taking everyone down with you. Exposing others is something you may find yourself doing a lot. You hate when people hide under facades. At your lowest, you are manipulative and challenging. You give off femme fatale vibes. You may have strong and overwhelming sexual urges at times. You can be into domination/submission and like to be in control, wanting others to yield to you. Virgo Mars- You have a practical and careful way of approaching confrontation. Your words sting and that’s your weapon. You are great at arguing and if someone chooses to argue with you then they’d better be ready to endure some humiliation. You are punctual and hardworking. You like to be prepared. Nobody has work ethic like you. You are very admirable. Pisces jupiter- Expansion comes through spirituality. You will embark on a journey of soul discovery through spirituality. You meet your higher self through practicing self love and healing practices. You have a wonderful gift to offer the world. You are a natural healer and through healing—of yourself and others, you will learn to live life to the fullest. Aries Saturn- Struggles come with ones inability to assert oneself. You may not be very assertive or confident. It’s important that you learn this in order to live life without worry.

(wc: 2.8k. michael is the Sawi Best Friend . pining + pining + pining = pining. part 1. part 2. part 3. or read everything here on ao3)
The English Project Christine Crisis begins with Jeremy wordlessly sitting next to Michael during lunch, back stiff, face pale, looking a little bit like a gargoyle that just saw another, uglier gargoyle, before grabbing his bag and raptor screeching right into it.
“I have no idea what you’re doing or why you’re doing it, but honestly? Hard same,” Michael says, patting Jeremy’s back as his screeching slowly dies down into pained warbling. “Let it all out, buddy.”
“Mmmmmmrrr,” Jeremy says into his bag. He turns his head to face Michael, face creased from the bag, “Dude, do you ever feel like sometimes the universe is trying to be nice to you but it’s spent so long being a dick to you that everything is still kinda awful?”
“Uh,” Michael says. “I’m going to need a little bit more context.”
“Like, are you ever given a really, really good thing, but it’s the worst thing ever at the same time?”
“Okay, I catch your drift now,” Michael’s got the worst crush on his incredible best friend, so yeah, he gets it. Michael pats Jeremy’s head. “Wanna tell me what’s up?”
“Christine,” Jeremy sighs dreamily.
“Was she, like, extra cute in the hallway today or something?”
“She’s always cute in the hallway,” Jeremy says. “But uh, in English today, there’s this paper we’ve gotta write.”
“Uh huh.”
“And it’s by pair.”
“Alright.”
“And Christine was assigned as my partner,” he says, voice getting more urgent with each word.
“Well, that’s great news, isn’t it?” Michael grins, but Jeremy just looks like somebody just killed a bunny in front of him.
“It isn’t! I’m going to have to talk to her and spend time with her and stuff and it’ll be great but I’ll mess everything up because I always do,” He groans, burying his face back into his bag. Michael has to lean in to hear the rest of his muffled words. “How are people even supposed to function around people they like?”
Michael, expert at functioning around a person he likes, decides to be sympathetic. “Okay, first off? You don’t always mess everything up. That’s my best friend you’re talking about, so don’t be too hard on him,” he ruffles Jeremy’s hair. “It’ll be fine, okay? Just act like you normally do.”
“Anxious, tense, and weird?”
“Funny, sincere, and interesting,” Michael says, fingers threading through Jeremy’s hair. “A little awkward sometimes, but hey, who isn’t?”
“You’re my best friend, you’re practically contractually obligated to think all that,” he grumbles, but then he looks at Michael. “Thanks, though. Also, if you keep touching my hair like that, I’m gonna fall asleep.”
“Whoops,” Michael jerks his traitorous hand away. “So, uh, what’s project about?”
“The Tempest,” Jeremy answers, smiling a little bit. “Christine and I talked about it a little before class ended, and she was so excited, god it was so cute. It’s dumb, but I wish she’d get excited about me too.”
“Geez, dude, this project sure is going to be wild ride, huh? You just switched from dreamy lovey dovey to mega sawi in under a second.”Jeremy makes a questioning noise, one that Michael’s come to understand as Jeremy’s shortcut for what did that mean now that lately, Michael’s been speaking a bit more Filipino around him.
“Sawi literally means ‘unlucky’, in English, but lately it’s been kind of specific to describe people who are down in the dumps and shit when your love life is kind of crummy,” Michael explains.
“Why the hell does your language have so many fitting words about love?” and Jeremy’s face is back in his bag again.
“No idea, dude,” Michael sighs, wondering the exact same thing.
-
Here’s the thing about Jeremy:
He’s a big ball of nerves who’s anxious ninety percent of his waking life. He second guesses his second guesses and doubts as if he’s being paid good money to. He tries to hide it, but he’s bitter and pissed off about a lot of things in life like his parents or his social standing. Sometimes, even if he doesn’t mean it, he’s a bit of an asshole. The state of Jeremy’s self-esteem, based on what Michael’s seen, is akin to an on fire screaming garbage can that keeps setting itself back on fire every time Michael tries to put it out.
But he also wears these dumb cardigans that are really soft and often are too long, covering his hands til only his fingers peek out. He’s got a weird, adorable, wheezy laugh that’s a remnant of the asthma he grew out of when he turned eleven. He keeps a paperclip or two in his pockets all the time to give to Michael just in case Michael feels like he needs to fidget with something. He always remembers Michael’s birthday. His Filipino is atrocious, but he tries to speak words and phrases of it anyway.
The thing about Jeremy is that he’s pretty much the best person Michael knows.
-
heerefarwhereveryouare is calling…
“Coolest guy on the planet speaking, how may I help you?” Michael wedges his phone between his head and shoulder so he can continue to rinse plates with his hands. On the line, Jeremy lets out a very emotional screech. “Uh, buddy?”
“Are you busy right now?” Jeremy asks.
“Just dishes,” Michael grabs another plate. “What’s up? I thought you went to Christine’s place for the project?”
“Exactly! I mean, I’m home now, but, oh my god! I went to Christine’s house!”
“Ohhhh, I get it, this is call is going to be gushing about the whole experience, am I right?” Michael says fondly.
“No—I mean, yeah, but, you know.”
“It’s alright, Jer, you don’t have to justify it,” Michael thinks that if he actually had any other friends, he’d love to gush about Jeremy to them. Alas, he wasn’t as lucky. “Go for it.”
“For real?”
“It would be a privilege to have your sonorous voice wax poetic while I get sudsy with plates,” Michael tells him sincerely. “Unleash the raving dude. I am ready.”
“Okay, well,” Jeremy says. “Okay. Okay. I’ll start from the top. So like, she lives pretty nearby so we walk and it’s kind of awkward for a bit? I’m like, agh, fuck it, so I just say whatever the hell is on my mind and it turns out what that was was dolphins.”
“You fucking furry.”
“Says the guy who followed Meerkat Manor religiously,” Jeremy fires back with no hesitation. Michael has never been prouder of his boy. “There was a documentary about them on Animal Planet a few days ago focusing on their sonar powers so I just kind of blurt that out weirdly. I wanted to like, dive into a gutter and die, but then she just keeps asking about it? She got really interested in it. At one point, she makes this adorable dolphin noise, it was—” Jeremy makes a noise which Michael understands fully. Michael also feels very random noise over cute shit Jeremy does all the time.
“See? Being sincere works! Even if it’s about dolphins,” Michael laughs. “How’d the rest go?”
“Uh, well, we we’re productive, for most of it. We drafted what parts of the drama we wanted to expound on,” Jeremy sighs. “She’s really, really, smart Michael. I’m okay in English, but she’s a genius. She’s so passionate and perceptive about the themes and ironies present in the text. She’s a huge theatre kid and she’s super excited for the school play which is gonna have their sign ups soon. Dude, if she signs up, I will too.”
“Nice!” He smiles. “I’m loving the confidence!”
“Yeah, I—She’s just really confident with herself so she makes me want to try to, if that makes sense?”
“Of course it does. I’m glad she’s bringing this out in you, man.”
“I am too,” Jeremy sighs, ridiculously fond. It’s a soft sound, but it echoes in Michael’s head, bouncing off the walls of his brain, clattering around, causing all kinds of shit like aches in his chest or a hunch to his back. Oh, how he wishes. He wishes, real bad.
“Michael? Michael, you still there?” Jeremy voice brings him back. Right. Rinsing a plate and on the phone with a boy who’s got no idea.
“Yeah, still here, dude,” Michael says. “Just zoned out a bit. You know how I get with the dishes. All the soap gets really existential.”
Jeremy snorts, “Whatever you say, man. Listen, I’ve gotta go. I promised Christine I’d message her the google doc link to what we made today. Thanks for listening, Michael! You’re the greatest.”
“And don’t you forget it,” Michael dries his hands. “Good night, dude.”
“Night!” and Jeremy hangs up.
Michael takes a deep breath. Then another. And another. He runs a hand down his face and thinks, fuck. Michael is happy. He’s gotta be happy. His best friend is actually interacting with the girl he’s crushing on, so Michael is over the moon. But the tight feeling in his throat stubbornly says otherwise.
Sawi doesn’t even begin to describe whatever this is now.
-
Here’s the thing about Michael:
His head is a cluttered mess that goes eighty eight miles per hour basically every second, but never in any useful direction. He likes obscure stuff that not many other people can relate to. He gets that sometimes he speaks too fast or is too loud or generally just is too much, but doesn’t know how to tone himself down. He’s weird and uncool but he’s also aware that there’s honestly nothing wrong with that as long as he’s having fun. He’s a loner, but he doesn’t care because he’s got Jeremy.
Michael’s also been Jeremy’s best friend ever since they met twelve years ago at some undisclosed sandbox where Jeremy talked to him out of nowhere holding a beetle in his hands. He’s seen Jeremy at his highest (first place at the sixth grade science fair with his experiment that tested out the slipperiness of certain fruit peels), and his lowest (“Michael? Can I come over? Uh, well, I’m fine, I swear. It’s just—mom left and. I’m fine, I’m—”). He slowly dug himself a hole of non platonic feelings for his best friend and only noticed he didn’t bring a ladder with him to get out once he was already in too deep.
The thing about Michael is that he’s had a lot of practice at this.
-
Somebody taps Michael’s shoulder in the hallway and he almost has a heart attack. He turns around slowly, apprehensive, because Jeremy never touches Michael out of nowhere without clear visual warning, so it’s either a bully, an axe murderer, or the heaviest fly in the world.
None of the above. Michael has to look down a little bit to see Christine Canigula waving at him sheepishly.
“Uh,” Michael pulls his headphones down. This is odd. People don’t talk to Michael. Christine is people. He should probably say something. “Hi?”
“Hi, uh, I don’t know if you know me,” Christine says, gesturing wildly already despite only having spoken for two seconds. “But you’re Jeremy Heere’s friend right? Michael?”
“Yep, that’s me,” Michael smiles. Nickname wise, Jeremy Heere’s Friend is a lot better than Anti-Social Headphones Kid. He hopes it catches on. “You’re Christine.”
“Yeah, how’d you know?”
“Jeremy talks about you a lot,” he says because he’s a goddamn good friend, damn it. “Like a lot. You’re a great English partner. The absolute best, if his words are to be believed.”
“He’s just overselling me,” she laughs. It’s a dorky, wheezy laugh, Jesus Christ, they’re made for each other. “Jeremy’s really sweet.”
“Yeah, he’s like, the softest boy in the world,” Michael tells her.
“I really like your patches,” she segues, pointing at the Rise Above Racism one in particular.
“Thanks. I really like your dress.” Michael says, for the lack of anything else to say. There was never a walkthrough on how to do smalltalk. It really is a nice dress, though.
“Thanks!”
“So, uh,” Michael fiddles with the wire of his headphones. “What’s up?”
“Oh! Right,” Christine blinks, slinging her backpack off her shoulders. “He forgot his cardigan back at my place, yesterday. I could’ve returned it tomorrow, when we have class, but he’s pretty thin so I was worried that he might get too cold. I really don’t want my English partner to die from, like, hypothermia, or something. Especially since he’s been a great partner. I’m really glad I got paired with him, because I’m pretty sure everybody else in the class doesn’t really care all that much about the text. It’s like, there’s a reason Shakespeare is timeless, y’know? But a lot of people nowadays don’t wanna give it a chance long enough to see just how incredible all his works were, and still are, even now!” She says, impressively, all in one breath.
“Yeah, dude, rock on Shakespeare,” Michael smiles, kind of taken aback, but charmed all the same. Michael’s about as straight as a circle, but he can see why Jeremy likes Christine. “Jeremy’s the raddest.”
“Rad!” Christine cheers, Jeremy’s cardigan in hand. It’s adorable. “Here, you go. Heh, Heere. Heere you go.”
“Oh geez, I’ll tell him you said that, he’ll lose his shit,” Michael laughs.
“Nice,” she rocks back and forth on her feet, then suddenly she jolts, as if remembering. “Whoa, wait, sorry I’ve gotta run. Thank you so much, Michael. See you around!”
And she whirls off, walking away with a happy skip in her step.
-
Here’s the thing about Christine:
Michael doesn’t know her. He knows the adoring stained glass image collage of her that Jeremy has created through dreamy anecdotes and forlorn sighs. He’s aware that there might be a lot different between that image and the real Christine Canigula, but just by going off of what he’s seen, Christine is a great girl
She’s nerdy and unapologetically passionate about her interests. She’s a little all over the place, but so is Jeremy. She smiles a lot and happiness trails after her like an devoted puppy. She layers clothes like a boss. Michael doesn’t know her all that well, but she makes Jeremy happy.
The thing about Christine is that she makes Jeremy happy. And that’s the most important fucking thing.
-
“Dude, are you wearing my cardigan?” Jeremy asks later when they meet for lunch.
“Sure am,” Michael says, picking up his juice carton. “I bumped into Christine earlier and she told me you forgot it and gave it to me instead of waiting to see you tomorrow because she was worried your skinny ass would die from the cold.”
“She was worried about me?” Jeremy smiles like a dweeb, before blinking and saying, “Wait, that doesn’t explain why you’re wearing my cardigan, though.”
“It’s soft as fuck,” Michael bites his straw to hell and back. “You can have it back after lunch.”
“Fair enough,” he says, starting to eat whatever mush it is the cafeteria served today. “So what’d you think?”
“Of what?”
“Christine,” Jeremy says. “That’s the first time you met her, right?”
Michael nods, deciding to pick on Jeremy a little bit. “She’s nice, I guess.”
“You guess,” he hisses. “That’s it, take off the cardigan. Only people who appreciate Christine for all her glory is allowed to wear it.”
“Agh! I’m kidding, I’m kidding, she’s incredible and perfect and she’ll wage an army of puppies to fight off people who don’t like Shakespeare,” Michael laughs, batting away Jeremy’s grabby hands.
Jeremy huffs, sitting back down, and he’s silent for a moment. Then he says, “I think I might tell her soon.”
Those seven words rattle in his head. Clang, clang, clang, motherfucker. But Michael’s been doing this long enough to expertly cram all of it into a box in the corner of his mind for later. Priority number one: Jeremy. Always.
“Dude! So proud! High five,” Michael raises his hand. Jeremy sheepishly swats at it. Close enough. “How are you going to do it?”
“I haven’t thought that far ahead yet,” he grumbles. “I always stutter and forget how to talk when I’m around her.”
“Maybe you can try writing a letter?” Michael suggests past the tight feeling in his throat. “She’ll love something like that.”
“You really think so?” Jeremy smiles, a little unsure, a little perfect.
“I know so,” Michael assures him. “And whatever happens, I’ll be here to help you through, ‘kay?”
“Thanks, Michael,” Jeremy leans his head against Michael’s shoulder. “What would I do without you?”
“Probably crash and burn,” he says, swallowing all the aches down.
-
His point is this. Christine, should she ever like Jeremy back—which is highly probable given that Jeremy is a fucking catch—would be really good for Jeremy. They’d be really good for each other. They’re both nerdy and cute and they’d be so good.
Michael might be the pining best friend, but really, he’s a best friend first. Best friends make best friends happy. Above all, Jeremy deserves that.
Even if it’s with somebody else.
(not as much filipino in this part :^(((. i’ll make it up in the later chapters [prayer hands emoji])

Its about cooperating. Everyone together, equally: Helsinki, the Finnish capital. Photograph: Hemis/Alamy
Western Europes last naturally caused famine ended 150 years ago this winter. In a poor and backward part of the Russian empire called Finland, more than a quarter of a million people nearly 10% of the population starved to death.
Last year, on the centenary of its independence, Finland was ranked, by assorted international indices, the most stable, the safest and the best-governed country in the world. It was also the third wealthiest, the third least corrupt, the second most socially progressive and the third most socially just.
Finlands judicial system is the most independent in the world, its police the most trusted, its banks the soundest, its companies the second most ethical, its elections the second freest, and its citizens enjoy the highest levels of personal freedom, choice and wellbeing.
The Nordic countrys 5.5 million inhabitants are also the third most gender-equal in the world and have the fifth lowest income inequality. Their babies are the least underweight, their kids feel the most secure, and their teens perform the second best at reading (only third at science, though).
In a century and a half, they seem to have done rather well. And so, as the Guardian embarks on a new series investigating the things that are going right in the world, it feels natural to start in Helsinki.
If you look at where we were then and where we are now, I think, absolutely, you can talk about a Finnish miracle, said Bengt Holmstrm, a Helsinki-born Nobel prize-winning economist not much given to exaggeration. How and why did it happen? Now thats a question.
There are limits, of course, to the usefulness of this kind of exercise: no two countries their circumstances, their histories, their people can be the same. Learnings may not be transferable. The magic sauce that made Finland would not produce the same results in, say, France.
It is true, too, that shown the long list of social and economic measures by which their country can only be judged a success, many Finns snort: emerging slowly from a long recession, with unemployment at 8% and a populist, nationalist party garnering up to 20% of the vote, the countrys not what it was, they say. Often, the response only semi-joking is, You mean other countries are worse?

What is The Upside?
News doesn’t always have to be bad indeed, the relentless focus on confrontation, disaster, antagonism and blame risks convincing the public that the world is hopeless and there is nothing we can do.
This series is an antidote, an attempt to show that there is plenty of hope, as our journalists scour the planet looking for pioneers, trailblazers, best practice, unsung heroes, ideas that work, ideas that might and innovations whose time might have come.
Readers can follow up with our Further Reading guides and can also recommend other projects, people and progress that we should report on, by filling out the form at the bottom of the article.

But inquiring after the sauces recipe of, among others, an economist, a philosopher, a sociologist and an ex-president, intriguing ingredients emerge.
To begin with, the geography and its consequence, the climate. We live, Tarja Halonen, Finlands president from 2000 to 2012, says carefully, in a cold, harsh and remote place. Every person has to work hard for themselves. But that is not always enough. You have to help your neighbours.
Bruce Oreck, who served as Barack Obamas ambassador to Helsinki (he liked it so much he stayed), says this has been a profound, long-term influence. Its made Finns self-reliant, private, but also dependent on a highly cooperative society, where rules matter. Its cultural, but its become part of the chemistry.
Of all the Finnish words that are hard to translate into English, the one Finns cite most is sisu: a kind of dogged, courageous persistence regardless of consequence. It is what, in 1939-40, allowed an army of 350,000 men to twice fight off Soviet forces three times their number, and inflict losses five times heavier than those they sustained.

But there is another that is, perhaps, more revealing, says Sirpa Khknen, an award-winning historical novelist. Talkoo means working together, collectively, for a specific good, she says. Getting the harvest in, stocking wood, raising money. Its about cooperating. Everyone together, equally.
Cooperation, but also relative equality, are recurring themes. Ruled for almost 600 years by Sweden and a further century by Russia, Finland was generally and democratically poor, says Khknen. There were no serfs, but no wildly wealthy aristocrats either. Society was not hierarchical.
Since long before independence in 1917, says Riitta Jallinoja, a sociologist, gaps between the social classes in Finland have been smaller than usual. Even the industrial revolution here was modest: no Rothschilds, no Fords, not even a dynasty like Swedens Wallenbergs.
Even in todays clean, functional, visibly prosperous Helsinki, that still sort of holds. You can be walking down the street next to the richest guy in town, and you really wouldnt know, says Oreck. In Finland, insists Halonen, You dont look up at people, and you dont look down. You look level.
The countrys most successful current firm, games studio Supercell, creator of Clash of Clans, paid over 800m in tax, producing seven of Finlands top 10 income tax payers in 2016. Along with the rest of the countrys highest 10,000 or so highest earners, the amount they pay is published in an annual list, on national envy day. Finland is big on civic duty, but also on transparency.
The success of the countrys free national education system, established before independence in 1866 and regularly ranked among the worlds best, also has its roots in a more egalitarian society, says Jallinoja: Education was the key to advancement.
Not only that, says the philosopher and professor emeritus Ilkka Niiniluoto, but the whole country is actually a social construction created by university professors. The academics who led the countrys nationalist movement created Finland as a nation: its language, history, literature, music, symbols, folklore. The nationalist leader was a philosophy professor.
Since independence, nearly 30% of Finlands heads of state and government have been university professors, including half its early prime ministers. They shaped the country as we know it, says Jallinoja. But vitally, they also created confidence in social mobility, and real belief in education. That history comes with us.
If, however, Finland has been rated the worlds most literate country, it may also have something to do with a 19th-century decree that a couple could not marry in the Lutheran church before both passed a reading test. Quite an incentive, observes Halonen, to learn to read.

Gender equality, similarly, was baked in. In 1906, Finnish women became, if not quite the first to win the vote, the first to run for electoral office. Nearly 10% of MPs in Finlands first parliament were women (the figure is now 42%); as early as 1930, up to 30% of university students were women. Women in Finland took their rights seriously, and men accepted it, says Halonen.
Other ingredients have since added to the sauce. Finland benefited enormously from wise wartime and postwar leaders, insists Holmstrm: They thought about the good of the country; took big, sensible decisions. And the consensus backed them, because everyone knew we were fighting for our existence.
Responsible choices were made, invariably by continuity-conscious coalition governments, on big industrial and infrastructure investments, that have paid dividends many times over. More recently, todays high-tech, startup-friendly Finland was born of record investment in research and development in the 1990s, nearing 4% of GDP.
Steady growth through war, the collapse of the Soviet Union and a deep recession in the 1990s, Finlands economy has expanded over the past century at a rate equalled only by Japans has bolstered trust in the nations institutions. People criticise the government constantly, and often for very good reason, says Khknen. But fundamentally, they do trust it.
As they do, on the whole, their welfare state on which Finland spends 31% of its GDP, the second highest proportion in the OECD. (If youre going to have a welfare state, says Halonen, the only real way to it is so well that theres no point having a private alternative.)
But Finns also trust each other more than most, says Andr Chaker, a Canadian-born lawyer and public speaker who has lived in the country for 25 years. Corruption and organised crime are all but nonexistent. That feeds into the business environment, he says. Things get done here faster, more reliably.
And it is trust that breeds confidence, and a willingness to innovate: the World Economic Forum ranks Finland the most innovative country, per capita, in the world. For years dominated by monolithic mining and forestry firms, then by the once-mighty Nokia, Finland today is close behind Silicon Valley in the number of startups per head.
The magic sauce, then, seems based mainly on basic virtues: self-confidence, cooperation, equality, respect for education, trust. At bottom and in practice, says Anu Partanen, a Finnish journalist who now lives in New York, it boils down to a different quality of relationship. She calls it since it is shared to a greater or lesser extent by Sweden, Norway and Denmark the Nordic theory of love.
In the family, its realising that relationships can only really flourish between individuals parents, children, spouses who are equal and independent, Partanen says. In a society, it means policy choices aimed at ensuring the greatest possible degree of independence, freedom and opportunity for everyone.
