Some thoughts about Max and Oscar
This has been on my mind for a while and i've been noticing it more each time i watch an episode. The two of them swap between who's taking point very easily and naturally. This applies to most situations, primarily illustrated by their positioning/walking.
On police business Max falls behind Oscar in most situations. In casual settings they'll of course be side by side or facing each other when convenient. Situations where Max takes point are "high society" events, art exhibition, opera, movies etc. But there are special occasions where they break these rules, and the scene where they interrogate Gruner is particularly good at showing it.
When Gruner walks in, they're relatively equidistant from him, but Oskar is off to the side, not drawing attention to himself. Max is the star of the show at the moment despite this being a police inquiry. I assume this is not only because this case is important to Max, but because Oscar knows something of Max's relationship with Gruner. I don't remember it being mentioned in front of him onscreen but if i'm wrong i'll gladly stand corrected.
Gruner is instantly hostile, so ofc Oscar approaches him, without too many words and without even introducing himself, even when asked (lmao eat shit old man) just to be an intimidating factor in this equation for Max's sake. AND he gets even closer as Gruner gets progressively uppity.
Other reason Oscar stepped up, so he can do this. We love a practical king. He plants Gruner in a chair and then does my favorite Oscar manouver, Push Entitled Man Back Into Chair™. Works every time btw.
He stays close to Gruner before he starts talking, but as soon as he's sure the man will cooperate he moves back, just as Max steps forward to take the "front line" again. I cannot be convinced that oscar doesn't know this is something Max needs to do. He's likely never met Gruner but he 100% knows exactly what Max thinks of him and identifies.
Obviously this doesn't apply exclusively to their positioning but it's a good vessel and a good metaphor to express it, and I thought it was neat!
