Incorrect Star Trek Picard #13
Elnor: I don’t like this.
Hugh: Me taking a risk, or me using logic against you?
Elnor: Both.

I know that Elnor is practically Raffi's son, but I wish that Elnor and Seven interacted more.
Elnor's absolute candor is so much like young!Seven, on the other hand maybe Elnor was too much like Seven and maybe Icheb that it became painful for Seven to be around him and she pulled away (season 2).
But man, do I want Elnor and Seven to interact more, hopefully, if/when the proposed Star Trek show gets greenlit Elnor will become the Chief of Security or at least part of the security under Seven's captaincy!

Finally got a chance this week to sit down and read Second Self , the most recent Picard novel. I pretty much assumed I would enjoy this one because it's Una McCormack (which is like slapping a guarantee on the package for me) and because her first Picard novel was a banger, despite my having more tepid feelings about the series itself.
If you’re in my Trek circle of tumblr, you should give this one a try, guys. It's good.
Tumblr media
Random thoughts (here be spoilers):
The moment I saw the words "a Cardassian," I knew I was going to see Garak. I knew because #1: are there other Cardassians? Really? and #2: Dr. Una wouldn't play with my heart like that. (Also my spouse, who had already read the book, kept staring at me while I was reading, judging my reaction. Bit of a tip off as well.)
I fucking love Raffi. Specifically, I love this novelverse version of the character who has depth and is so relatable. She was the best part of Last Best Hope, and having her take center stage was a treat. I would like to kindly request of the Star Trek gods to please give us a smidge more Seven/Raffi in the novelverse. The radioplay was lovely, and Beyer fed us well there. But I want more, and I'm especially curious to see what Dr. McCormack's would do with it. I have waited a lifetime to see an explicitly canon sapphic ship* in Trek: I am hungry. (*other than Dax/Kahn)
Juxtaposing Elnor and his absolute candor with Garak is just *chef's kiss fireworks yes* BRILLIANT
As with most of Dr. Una's work, not only was this an engaging read, but it was thematically rich, too. The meditation on justice vs. retribution vs. restitution is so immediately relevant and so well done that I know I’ll be thinking about it many times outside its trek context. And I was so grateful for the recognition that choosing restitution is an heroic act on the part of those who truly deserve retribution/justice. Effing lovely.
I always wondered how one could satisfactorily end Garak's story. I mean in my heart I knew it couldn't be purely happily ever after. There were war crimes, buddy: probably need just a smidge of comeuppance there. But also, the other part of my heart didn't want to see him suffer more because...because it's Garak. This ending managed to please both halves of my heart, which I didn't think possible. (When I say end, it is by default in quotation marks because that story will never be over, I refuse)
I will forever and always wonder how different this arc is than the one that might have been in the prior DS9 litverse.
Okay, @unamccormack, be honest: how much of that letter Garak left for Bashir have you mentally written? Actually written? I have to know what it says. I need it like air. I just know it would be full of references to The Tempest and musings on missed opportunities and past mistakes. Please, I'm begging: release the extended cut!

okay imma need elnor to get to enterpise-g like yesterday-- all the interesting dynamics to be had for him there with his absolute candor.
him not liking jack at first and taking a while to warm up to him, but finally he is becoming the match-maker for both captain seven / raffi as well as jack / sidney's likely super on-again off-again relationship.
elnor meditating with worf and getting him all grumpy when he points out some obvious truth about something, and then them being buds destroying bad guys.
and he gets a cat ofc

For your ask game, how about Elnor (surprise surprise lol)?
The prompt: "Preparing tea is a sort of meditation for me."
Thank you for asking, @the-qalankhais-sweetheart! 💕 I hope you like it. 🤞
———
Brewing Hope
He had been quite small, a blunted tan qalanq sword holstered to his back, the blade dragging behind him, when he told one of the sisters how he would grow up to be a great Qowat Milat.
And, of course, in the Way of Absolute Candor, she had crouched in front of him and said, “No, Elnor, you will not. You can train in our ways, but you will never be one of us.”
He had not cried.
Perhaps he had known, somehow, that while he lived among people who loved him, he was not like them.
The sister had made him some tea and told him of the Romulans arriving to Vashti, large transports full of those fleeing the impending supernova, and surely someone would adopt him.
But no one did.
Tea was hope, though, and when Elnor was in need of hope he would ask for tea and, when he was old enough, would make tea for himself, carefully heating and pouring the water, seeping leaves, the first sip a balm to the little boy he was and to the young man he had become.
Then he was at Starfleet Academy, a dorm room with a human roommate who sat cross-legged on a narrow bed and watched as Elnor made — not replicated — two cups of tea.
“Why do you do it that way?” the roommate asked, not rude — only curious — and Absolute Candor was both home and way station for Elnor so this question was easy to answer.
“Preparing tea is a sort of meditation for me." Elnor handed a warm cup to his cross-legged, human roommate. “It allows me to consider what I have, and what I hope to achieve.”
The roommate sipped, contemplative. “What do you hope to achieve?”
And Elnor had thought this was obvious, had believed that what he wanted was what everyone yearned for but few attained. “I hope to achieve belonging. To be a full member of a group that values me for myself.”
Perhaps the warmth of the tea caused redness in the human roommate’s eyes, rapid blinking, and a shaky breath.
“I’d say,” the human roommate held the cup of tea gently, like a treasure, “you’ve got that if you want it, Elnor. A bunch of us are going to play hoverball tonight. Do you want to be part of the group?”
And it had come true, finally, someone had adopted Elnor — not as a child, but as an equal.
“Yes.” Elnor’s belly became warm with tea and belonging. “Yes, I would like that very much.”
———
Send me an ask with character(s) and a prompt and I’ll do my best to brew up something you’ll like. ❤️

Picard did Elnor dirty and I'm still mad. Little absolute candor baby boy. Season one they initially set it up like he looks up to Picard as tiny child, like Picard as a father figure. Then your like "oh found family maybe as an adult? Rekindling that?" Aha. no. He's just a deus ex machina. Little sword boy saves the day. Season two. Just like. Mmm kill him so Raffi has angst.

he’s a ten but his absolute candor gets him in trouble ( elnor ofc! )
he's an eleven because even though he might not be able to fight his way out of every scenario, his found family will literally help fix a timeline to have him breathing again ( and i suppose everyone else, too ) - even if not a guarantee.

With the Georgiou/31 spinoff turned to a movie special (I'm going to follow TrekCulture's lead here and call it a Long Trek), I have been thinking about some ideas for other Long Treks that could be put together. Cuz there's plenty Trek out there to build on for series, Short Treks, and Long Treks, so let's get some exploration of these ideas.
Gonna put this behind a cut though, since I go on and on, especially when I give myself a platform.
First off, and most importantly, I really want to return to the Picard-original cast and give them further features - hearing that Isa Briones thought that fans didn't like her broke my heart, so let's immediately jump into a Soji-Data story that features father and daughter. Not to say that screen Trek should totally rip off the novelverse, but that could also give a genuine return for Moriarty, since his actor was disappointed to not actually be playing Moriarty. Or do some follow up on the synths who left that message that the Zhat Vash were so afraid of and deal with THAT aftermath. But yeah, let's see the father-daughter adventure that Picard Season 3 couldn't afford.
I'd like also to take advantage of Rios being in the early/mid 21st century and actually get a WW3 story - y'know, we have this established major character (possibly characters if Guinan gets to be involved as well) who would be there in this time frame, and, on top of that, this is a story that kinda DEMANDS being told, since Rios stayed for Teresa and Ricardo, so presumably with the intent and desire to protect them when the war broke out.
Then there's the natural Jurati and her Borg Collective to explore, which would be able to also explore what that massive galactic threat was - if, just as a theory to connect it with what else was happening in Picard season two, it was tied to the death of Q, for example, we could also learn about the fates of the Lady Q and Junior.
Elnor, I think, would have a story more appropriate to a Short Trek, not these Long Treks, but only because I feel like it would be reasonable to have him join the cast of the potential "Star Trek Legacy" that people call for. With that in mind, I'd like to see him settle on a career in Starfleet that suits him - specifically, counseling. Cuz sure, the guy is a sword wielding badass and looked to Picard as a mentor figure, so those imply a security or command track, but I'd sooner see him turn his heritage with Absolute Candor be part of how he helps others to heal. That said, there's certainly room to build up a cast of Starfleet cadets who are experiencing the aftermath of the Borg Attack on Frontier Day - how many of them were also assimilated and turned on their teachers and instructors and families? Indeed, that could be part of the catalyst of him taking that career track. Plus we'd be able to get more of Romulan history and culture explored.
Speaking of the Romulans, we really DO need a story that explores the actual events of the supernova that destroyed Romulus - it was a plot MacGuffin in 09 Trek, Picard season one dashed the Hobus star explanation utilized in the original Countdown comic and adopted by Star Trek Online by calling it the destruction of the Romulan star, and the novel Last Best Hope (which, while not being something that screen Trek is bound to, there has been more cross over/through with canon/non-canon material in modern Trek, so it's at least something that might be acknowledged) implied that the supernova was caused by some internal faction of the Romulans. This is a mystery that deserves to be solved - or, more bluntly, a plot mess from a time that didn't expect to HAVE to deal with it that needs to be cleaned up.
On a similar note, SELA. This character needs some kind of actual use and development - for all the fanfare that she got as an introduction, she ended up used as just a generic Romulan antagonist, and she should be further explored. She could be a major character of the Romulan supernova story or of a separate story, say, of rebuilding the Romulan society in the aftermath.
As a bit of 'hold us over until Star Trek Legacy can happen' kind of thing, I'd also like to get a Seven and the Fenris Rangers adventure, develop some of how she ended up with this group. As a bonus, we could get some acknowledgement of other Voyager crew in the mix as well - maybe she ends up running in to Harry Kim (finally promoted). Potentially, if this were to take place between the first two seasons of Picard, we could even get more of Santiago Cabrera as the La Sirena holograms (yes, I just want more Santiago Cabrera in Star Trek). Either way, though, I want to explore the shift in Seven from the end of Voyager to the time of Picard.
On a "just cuz" note, I want to see a pre-Picard Worf and Ro Starfleet Intelligence story, maybe something that further alludes to what Worf had sacrificed, as he said in Imposters. Plus explore more of his growth and development. I mean, I'd certainly not mind a Captain Worf of the Enterprise-E story (see just what was- er, WASN'T his fault about why they couldn't use it), but I feel like the Worf-Ro dynamic is something that it'd be interesting to dig in to (and, yes, I am aware she's among his crew in the Star Trek Defiant comics, but more is good).
This is where I'm going to cut myself off, because I could probably just keep going and have dozens more ideas. But just... I liked Short Treks, I want to see Long Treks be a thing, and I think both ideas give a great deal of room to explore more of the Trek universe.

I realized last night while watching Picard S1 again that someday Elnor, my brother in absolute candor, has the potential to be the first Romulan captain serving in Starfleet and I cried about it lol. I wish I had an Elnor in my life. I don't think I've ever seen a fictional character before that made me go "if I had a brother, I would want him to be like this". We have so much in common! I also spent much of my childhood alone, mastering the blade. I also love telling the truth and fully expressing my emotions!

JJ Abrams made Romulus and Vulcan gone, it's the Kelvin timeline. Though, in the ST Picard, Kurtzman and Chabon keep Romulus gone but not Vulcan. It didn't add anything. I don't even understand Laris and Zhabzn, they stay with Picard who failed... This is unromulan in my opinion but ok. The only good thing is thé Qowat Milat.
Yeah, I remembered Abrams deciding Vulcan was no more. That pissed me off royally when it came out. At least Vulcan is back in this timeline. I just didn't know Chabon was the dude who came up with Romulus being gone. There was no need for that, really. What would've been cool was seeing more of the planet itself - learning about Romulan culture and society more than we did in the older TV shows.
I can't speak to Laris and Zhaban's motives. I liked them, but they felt slightly out of place to me. Imho, it felt like they were just there to give the exposition about the Tal/Zat Vash/whichever organization they talked about. Aka, they felt like a cheap, quick, plot device that they thought they could disguise with pointed ears. But that's just me.
The Qowat Milat were an interesting inclusion. I enjoyed their "Absolute Candor" policy - refreshing coming from Romulans, and quite funny at times. They really could have done more with that. I feel like that's why Elnor was so effective.

Leaked Script of Star Trek: Legacy S1E1
TEASER:
The USS Enterprise-G, led by Captain Seven of Nine, is patrolling the Gamma Quadrant, searching for any signs of Dominion activity. Suddenly, the ship's computer systems begin to malfunction, and alarms blare throughout the ship.
ACT ONE:
Seven of Nine orders Commander Raffi Musiker to investigate the cause of the malfunction. Meanwhile, the ship's Chief Engineer, Alandra La Forge, is already working to fix the problem. She quickly realizes that the ship's systems have been infiltrated by Gamma Quadrant changelings, who have embedded an organic virus in the ship's computer systems.
As the crew works to contain the virus, Elnor and Jack Crusher are determined to obtain pineapple pizza. However, the ship's replicators are on the fritz due to the virus. Elnor decides to take matters into his own hands and attempts to fix the replicator himself.
ACT TWO:
Elnor's attempts to fix the replicator only make things worse, and the ship's systems continue to malfunction. Meanwhile, Raffi and her team discover that the changelings are trying to take control of the Enterprise-G's systems. They work to isolate the virus and prevent it from spreading further.
Back in the mess hall, Elnor and Jack are joined by Worf, who suggests they meditate to calm their minds and find a solution to the replicator problem. As they meditate, Elnor has a realization that the principles of The Way of Absolute Candor can be applied to the situation.
ACT THREE:
Using the principles of The Way of Absolute Candor, Elnor and Jack are able to identify the source of the replicator malfunction and fix it. The crew is able to obtain their beloved pineapple pizza once again.
Meanwhile, Raffi and her team successfully isolate the virus and prevent the changelings from taking control of the ship's systems. However, they discover that the changelings have already sent a message to the Dominion, revealing the location of the Enterprise-G.
ACT FOUR:
With the ship's location compromised, Seven of Nine orders the crew to prepare for battle. As the Dominion fleet approaches, the Enterprise-G engages in a fierce battle. The crew works together to overcome the changelings' attempts to sabotage the ship's systems, and they emerge victorious.
After the battle, the crew celebrates their victory and enjoys some much-needed relaxation time in the mess hall, where they indulge in some pineapple pizza. Elnor reflects on the lessons he learned from the experience and how The Way of Absolute Candor helped him solve the replicator problem.
EPILOGUE:
The Enterprise-G sets a course for Starbase 47 for repairs and to report the Dominion's attempted infiltration. The crew looks forward to some time on shore leave, but they know that the dangers of the Gamma Quadrant are always present.

hi there! if you're still taking the question prompts, I'd love Hugh/Elnor, "how did you get that scar" :)
Hi! 💕 I’m definitely still taking question prompts and this one is great! Thank you so much, @iwritesometimes, and I hope you like it! 🤞
For those who prefer to read on AO3:
For those who prefer to read here:
Note: Content warning for references to physical and mental scarring due to Borg assimilation and de-assimilation, as well as for a scar received by accident.
(Not) Anyone Can See
Dermal regeneration technology has limits, especially for xBs, with external healing often dependent on nanoprobe responses when liberated from the Collective.
So Hugh stopped flinching at his scars a long time ago, learned to look in the mirror and accept that the map of his recovery is something anyone can see, no denying that Third of Five existed.
And that’s been … a journey. A personal, private, public, difficult journey.
Which means self-imposed etiquette has led Hugh to never ask another xB about a scar. Is there a need to, really? Evidence of a onetime cortical processor, a prosthetic arm, a neural interface — these scars are obvious, their cause clear, their pain unmistakable.
Elnor isn’t an xB, of course.
But Hugh doesn’t ask what happened the first time Hugh sees the long, uneven scar at a jagged diagonal down Elnor’s upper thigh.
Hugh doesn’t ask the second time he sees the scar, either.
Or the third.
But after the fourth time, Hugh has become used to Elnor’s Absolute Candor, Elnor’s mostly smooth skin, Elnor’s gentleness.
So, from his side of the bed, Hugh asks, curious — and, God, it’s a luxury to be curious about dermal damage — “How did you get that scar?”
And Elnor smiles a soft smile of mild embarrassment, his fingertips dipping to trace the injury. “I was not quite a child and not quite a man, practicing with my tan qalanq. The sword slipped from my grasp and cut my leg. The wound was superficial, yet bloody, and I was frightened. I shouted for help, and one of the Qowat Milat sisters came running. She said the only thing truly injured was my pride, and that I should always remember to hold the tan qalanq properly. She staunched the blood, then she said, ‘A wound received by accident can be a teacher with purpose,’ and walked away. I could have used a dermal regenerator, but every time I see the scar, I remember the importance of properly holding my sword. I know this isn’t a very exciting or dramatic story, but that’s how it happened.”
That’s how it happened.
An accident.
An unexciting story.
A choice to keep a reminder — not something inflicted.
And Hugh, with his scars that anyone can see, reaches for Elnor, with his scar that most people can’t see, and holds on tight.
———
Send me an ask with character(s) and a prompt and I’ll do my best to write you a little something that will hold tight onto your heart. ❤️
✨ All prompted Picard ficlets are also available on AO3 as Decidedly Motley Stories. ✨
