Gen V (prod. Craig Rosenberg).
Amazon's college-centric The Boys spin-off does a fine job of paralleling the same satirically violent streak of gruesomely subversive superhero depravity transplanted to the sex and party-fuelled environment of a university campus. It's an altogether fun extension of this surreal vision of a twisted comic book television universe, with its queer satire firmly planted in debaucherous behaviour on the part of its complex characters, not totally unlike something like Riverdale. Gen V impresses through its tonal consistency while fitting nicely in an established existing world.

November 5, 2024
When the Disney Afternoon premiered in 1990, kids tossed their backpacks aside to watch their favorite Disney television characters. Unlike with feature films, these stars had a new adventure every weekday, and their audience journeyed with them on a daily basis. Throughout the '80s and '90s, Disney raised the bar with a lineup of innovative, high-quality television animation. The characters were endearing, the writing was clever, and the art was exceptional. Those who grew up with these characters have continued their love affairs for shows like Darkwing Duck, Gargoyles, TaleSpin, and the irrepressibly beloved DuckTales, deep into adulthood. For the first time, learn the history of the Disney Afternoon shows, read interviews from the creative teams, and revel in rare, behind-the-scenes artwork, plus get the full making of story of the modern-day DuckTales series and the meta-driven Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers film and its legacy connections to the past for a new generation of fans.

Superbad, 2007
a personal favorite film
The film that I have decided to rediscover is the movie Superbad starring Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. They star alongside Seth Rogan who happens to be one of the three writers who created the screenplay for the film. Seth and his childhood friend, Evan Goldberg, decided to write this film together as it reflected on the high school experience they had with each other, along with some dramatics added for entertainment. Something I found to be very interesting about the movie was that it took around 12 years to fully make from writing to filming all together. Seth Rogen had even possibly thought about playing the role of himself in it, which. ended up being given to Jonah Hill It depicts a somewhat coming of age moment in life as well as showing adolescence and the beauty of friendship in a way. When I first saw the movie, I believe I was around 15 or 16, and I had watched it with my best friend at the time on a movie website called Watch Party in which you can watch the same movie at the same exact time as someone and you are able to chat about it as you are watching it. I think the combination of watching it with my best friend and us being able to comment on it together and experiencing high school at the same time, it kind of felt really just fun and entertaining. Looking back on it now, it really just feels nostalgic. I tend to rewatch it whenever I want a pick me up or a good laugh, and it always takes me back to a point in life when I was in high school and the nostalgia is something I will carry with me with each rewatch. It seems weird that a silly movie like Superbad would leave a strong impact on me, but I love it. I have also introduced the movie to more friends who haven't already seen it, and they always end up loving it, which makes me happy as well.
Tumblr media
The movie seemed to have been met with great critical acclaim. It was almost an outright hit as a film and did very well. When it comes to numbers, the film had a domestic opening of $33,052,411 and ended up grossing $121,463,226 overall, according to Box Office Mojo. Seth Rogan being a big name already is somewhat what drew people's attention toward the film as he had been previously partaking in other movies that did well. A mix of actors was also intriguing to viewers, as Emma Stone is also a supporting actor throughout the movie. Something that assisted the return of investment was simply by the genre of the movie, comedy. The film was primarily a comedy, relying on its witty dialogue, raunchy humor, and absurd situations to entertain audiences. This comedic approach appealed to a wide demographic, particularly younger audiences. I feel like nowadays the film industry is heavily lacking in comedies, unless I am simply missing them. In the early to mid 2000’s, I feel as though comedy was so much more apparent and frequent and I hope it can make a return. "Superbad" blends conventional comedy elements with unconventional humor and character dynamics. While it follows a typical narrative structure and features familiar high school archetypes, its raunchy humor and realistic portrayal of teenage life set it apart. The film's unique tone and fresh character interactions contribute to its unconventional appeal within the comedy genre. The only real limiting factor I would say that possibly prevented bringing in more viewers was the R-rating that this movie holds. The movie is pretty raunchy and the language that is used very clearly depicts a movie that would be rated-r. Something interesting I discovered was that Spider-Man 3 premiered this year as well and it had become the top grossing movie of 2007, with Superbad a bit down the list at 21.
youtube
Upon rewatching, I find myself with the same feelings as before, in the most positive way. I simply love the movie, and it definitely stands as one of my most watched movies ever and a comfort movie I always turn to. Like stated previously, it now holds a lot of nostalgia for my own adolescence and it feels really cool to watch it again and somehow feel like how I did when I was 15 watching it for the first time on a random day. Something I noticed this time when watching it was how much I enjoyed how the movie timeline was only one day, and it felt like I was going through the whole day with them as a viewer, and I just love when movies do that.

GREEN NEW DEAL
Opening in theaters today:
Tumblr media
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem--This new animated feature version of the adolescent DNA-altered martial-arts-practicing chelonians is about mayhem that arises due to mutants. In case the title doesn't make it clear.
The quartet, all named for some reason after Italian Old Masters, dwell in the sewers of New York under the strict protective care of their teacher and adoptive parent, the mutant rat Splinter (voiced by Jackie Chan), but long to go to high school, maybe have girlfriends. On one of their sorties into the city, they meet high schooler April O'Niel (Ayo Edebiri), who's an aspiring journalist. They also run afoul of an evil scientist (Maya Rudolph) as well as a gang of other mutant animals led by the monstrous Superfly (Ice Cube).
It's a striking movie to look at. The visuals have a garish, roughed-out, graffiti-esque look, and the animation has a stylized hint of stop-motion in the Rankin-Bass manner. Among the writers are Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen; Rogen also provides the voice of the mutant warthog Bebop. The trailer and poster say the movie is "FROM PERMANENT TEENAGER SETH ROGEN."
The jabbery, overlapping dialogue is ticklingly funny, and I appreciated the characterization of the young April, who in the earlier movies has seemingly served as eye candy for the dads in the audience, as a smart and brave but unconfident kid with a typical body shape. As with earlier entries in the series, the film is packed with product placement, to the point that it becomes part of the comedy.
The Turtles made their debut in 1983, too late to be part of my childhood; my nephews were fans. I remember finding the '90s-era live-action TMNT movies annoying, but I found the live-action features of 2014 and 2016 surprisingly fun, even without a nostalgic attachment. Mutant Mayhem, however, may be the best-looking and funniest of them all.
As is so often the case in movies for kids, the ultimate goal that our heroes are seeking is, of course, acceptance, popularity, or simply "to be normal." This persistent theme can be tiresome, but undoubtedly it does reflect a common wish among this film's target audience. Permanent Teenager Rogen and his collaborators know their business.

My Marvelous Movie Masterpiece Mix
Tumblr media
Starting off strong with...
Tumblr media
SUPERBAD (2007)
A comedic masterpiece that perfectly encapsulates the growing pains we all experience during the transition from teenhood to adulthood. Considering the lovable duo, Seth and Evan, are based on the writers themselves (Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg) retelling their own hilarious and oddly specific experiences, it's easy for audiences to relate to the main characters. If you're someone who has left school/home or are currently (as I was when I watched this movie repeatedly in the months before starting university) , despite it being absurdly funny most of the time, it's actually quite the comfort film; rousing warm emotions about a time I didn't think I'd miss.
Tumblr media
Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
This being the first film of the Studio Ghibli Studio I was introduced too, I was instantly bewitched. Each of Hayao Miyazaki's animated movies behold a unique experience, not only are they visually stunning, there is always deeper significance contained within his works. Throughout, the film explicitly touches on the effects of war as well as the superficiality of keeping up appearances, as manifested in Sophies fluctuating age. Even having watched 'Howl's Moving Castle' several times at this point, I always find some secondary meaning. We are not just watching a love story unfold between some wizard man and a woman he's traversed time and space for <3
Tumblr media
GONE GIRL (2014)
This movie absolutely riddled me with some inner turmoil, from beginning to end. I felt like I was gaslighting myself. Whilst the experience may have been longwinded and unsettling, honestly, it was all worth it to watch Rosamund Pike's astounding performance as Amy Dunne. She awoke a rage in 16 year old me towards a husband I certainly did not have. The 'cool girl' monologue perfectly embodies how it feels to be under the scrutiny of the male gaze 'She’s a Cool girl. Cool girl is hot. Cool girl is game. Cool girl is fun. Cool girl never gets angry at her man.' I was in tethers by the end of it. Good for her.
Tumblr media
JUNO (2007)
Even without having watched this since my early teens, this off-beat chef d'oeuvre has engrained itself into the deep crevices of my brain. I feel that this movie played a key role in inciting the wave of indie gen-z kids thriving today (especially in Brighton), as well as summoning the Michael Cera express love train we all seem to have hopped on. It's an enlightening coming-of-age story (who doesn't love one of those) which features a beautiful soundtrack to match.
Tumblr media
HONORARY MENTION
Tumblr media
Promising Young Woman (2020)
Another good for her masterpiece, close to 'Gone Girl' if its colour palette was left to Wes Anderson's liberty.

Walt Disney Studios Sets One Little Spark With Figment Movie With Seth Rogen’s Point Grey Pictures And Detective Pikachu Writters.
A Disney film is in the works featuring the character Figment,a small purple dragon who serves as the mascot of Epcot’s Imagination Pavilion in Orlando.
The feature film helms from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s company Point Grey Pictures (The Boys,Invincible,American Pickle) Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit (Detective Pikachu) are set to writte the feature film.
This is Seth Rogen’s and Evan Goldberg’s second Disney project besides it’s upcoming Darkwing Duck Reboot at Disney+.
It’s unknow if the film will aim for a theatrical release or a Disney+ release however i bet it could be the latter.
Figment was created by Walt Disney Imagineers Tony Baxter and Steve Kirk, among other collaborators, in 1983, the same year it made its debut in the Epcot ride Journey Into Imagination. Figment is the embodiment of the imagining process— a figment of your imagination.Although one Disney’s more obscure characters,
Figment has a devoted fanbase that has ensured his role at the park is never diminished. Various attempts to remove the ride or decrease his presence have been met with loud protests.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem"
An action-packed visual delight, the film sets the bar at the highest standards for quality, edgy animated films for adults.
One of the greatest surprises of the year has to be “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” a film that I never would’ve expected to be as terrific as it is. Co-directed by Jeff Rowe and Kyler Spears and co-written by Rowe, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg, this animated feature is confident, action packed, funny, and is a visual delight. It’s a crowning achievement in animation, and the perfect summer…
