Dean comes to pick Rory up from an event at her grandparents. She comes out dressed in a beautiful gown. She looks absolutely stunning. She's surrounded by boys in fancy suits. All of high social standing. He sees her there, and that is when it hits him: That will never be him. Dean does not have a bunch of money. He does not like to wear suits and we know this after the Debutante ball episode where he says "All I can think about is getting home and out of this suit." So while he stands there, looking at his beautiful girlfriend he can hear the words of Richard Gilmore in his head from the night he came over for dinner. About Rory being a special girl. That she deserves someone just as special as she is. That they have certain standards to be upheld. He sees here that he does not meet those standards. That this will never be the life he will have. He sees he wouldn't fit. He doesn't belong. And because he loves her so dearly, after so many years of fighting for her love and going after her even when he shouldn't, that he needs to let her go. That the only thing he can offer her is setting her free so that she can find the one that can give her the finer things in life. So he asks her if he belongs here. Her hesitation is all the answer that he needs in that moment. Dean isn't breaking up with her here to be spiteful. He's breaking up with her out of love. Setting the one he loves free. Because it's the right thing to do. He doesn't yell. He doesn't raise his voice. He tells her "you look good." before he goes because he wants her to know that she does. So much more he wants to say but then he might change his mind. Getting into that truck is the hardest thing he has ever done, and his heart shatters as he looks back at her one last time, knowing this will be the LAST time that he looks at the love of his life. And though he moves on, he knows in his heart that if things would have been different that Rory would be his one. So that is an act of true love. I will go down with this. Thank you for listening. Okay so this may be confusing to explain, but i'll try my best. My friend Austin has this strange computer that can... connect to the future internet? Ok well to you guys it's not the future. For reference, i am from the year 2006, and yet whenever Austin over here accesses the internet, it's 2023??? Wowzas! Anyway, neither of us are really certain on how this works, but he always uses weird future internet slang that i don't quite get, so he let me create this blog to learn more about the future LOL? Hello it's me o7 apologies for the spam likes, I'm back on my mcd bullshit

I'm so glad most of the Og va's for the guys dipped asap when Jess started to go downhill. Afaik Andy and Pm Seymour (I honestly have no clue what to call him) are on to doing their own stuff now.

And my actual legit question! What do you think of Laurance and Garroth's characters slowly declining into like.. Nice Guy, kinda creepy behavior? Even watching it when it first came out ages ago made me uncomfortable.

Hi hi! no need to apologize for the spam notes, trust me when I say I get it a lot lol, I don't mind it at all.

The decline of Laurance and Garroth is literally what ruined the series, and Jess herself has acknowledged it before lol. Can't bother to find an exact quote right now, I think she mentioned it in a stream where she was talking about the state of Rebirth, but she's mentioned multiple times how she projected fan disapproval of Aarmau onto Garroth and Laurance at the time of writing, and as a result took the story in a direction she couldn't write in any longer. There's a reason all of S3 is privated on a second channel, and it's because Jess herself doesn't consider it + the ending parts of S2 to be fully "canon." (and at this point neither do I lol.)

I think I'm speaking for most people when I say that plotlines that rely on jealousy are overdone. IMO, they're boring, lazy, and were at no point in time ever good. Seeing them from two characters who straight up were not victims of this behavior until after it's established they wouldn't do it makes this even worse. Garroth gets the creep behavior long before the writing goes down the drain in S2. Every time I look back on the S1 finale and the moments leading up to it now I get sad because I know that the same character he had earlier in the season will never come back, and he will never be as interesting ever again.

A large amount of the people I see these days who hate Laurance do so because of his writing in late S2. I go back and forth on this a lot- I think ultimately Garroth got it way worse considering this sort of writing affected him way earlier than it did Laurance, making it unalterably tied to his character. But there is something incredibly heartbreaking about seeing two seasons of writing for what I think is one of the best-written characters in the series completely flushed away by a few episodes of clearly ooc writing. Garroth got less time than Laurance to develop considering his character was all but benched for all of S2, so in a way there's less writing for him to conflict with the weird jealousy angle they throw on later. This is absolutely not the case for Laurance, who has nearly two full seasons of screentime in the main cast, who emphasizes multiple times that he will still care for Aphmau whether she loves him or someone else.

I think a large part of what made Garroth, Laurance, and Aphmau's combined dynamic interesting was their mutual love for eachother, and how it didn't interrupt their friendship despite that. I've described it before as the fact that "They were still people beyond being love interests for her." (in this post here, in case I haven't rambled long enough for you and you want more on this topic) and I still stand by that wording pretty strongly. Not only did the jealousy nice guy angles ruin the characters for many, it ruined every part of their dynamics that was interesting.

Tldr me when im in a turning 3-dimensional characters into flat paper contest and my competition is Jess.

I don’t like how ppl say stuff like “ mcd aphmaus the worse garroth and Laurence did all this for her only for her to reject her what a bitch :/“ like DID YOU WATCH IT WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED???? Aphmau was DISTRESSED over having to chose one of them im a laurmau lover just like all of you but like in retrospect it may not have been a super healthy relationship. Like rewatching I GET what Jess was trying to do with Aaron, despite being horribly executed bc of Aaron’s role and how characters has to be essentially written ooc or written off completely to get there, *aaron I don’t know let her make a choice and was able to be there when laurence couldn’t bc of his own trauma and Shadow knight troubles.* And like,,, has aphmau not done alot for them too?? What about when aph learned who garroth truly was and still gave him her trust, doing anything and trying to find a way so that he doesnt have to leave PD? What about laurance? Every time she wanted she NEEDED a way to get to him in the nether, she didnt care he was a shadow knight she wanted him in her life and has been there for HIM emotionally MULTIPLE TIMES THROUHOUT THE BOTH SEASONS? Shes been there for both of the boys and cares so much for them, but SHES the bitch for not wanting to be with them romantically? What im trying to say is that it doesnt matter how much gar or laur did, they ARENT entitled to aphs romantic life, they NEVER were. Im with you that aarmau was very obviously pushed for in the dumbest and incoherent way possible, but ffs you can hate aarmau without being a little misogynistic!

That being said aarons role in the story was a weird one and i agree like you can TELL how badly aarmau was suddenly pushed for to where at times i felt like aaron was just taking someone elses place, what made him cool in the first place was how little we knew and how distanced he was from the group, to me he feels out of place in the main group. And im not saying new characters can join the main group (s2 Travis!), its just how their character was established and their roles and actions that define it. Aaron got his revenge on zane and was just chilling for the rest of s2, it would’ve been cool to see him settle in to PD but nooo guess who voices jaso-I mean aaron guys 🥺

Neil did say he wouldn't do a story that goes from enemies to friends concerning Ellie and Abby. Concerning the Abby being gay, I haven't seen anything from the writers that strictly says Abby is straight, but at the same time going from what I have seen in my respective playthroughs leads me to currently believe she isn't. If you do end up attempting to write them as a pairing, to stay true to both characters, sparing Joel and Jesse, etc and not go from canon would help with that because knowing Ellie, if Abby kills Joel especially in front of her and then they start dating, it would go against Ellie's character and it wouldn't be an accurate depiction of her. Then on another level it could easily delve into a toxic relationship if canon events transpire and they get together. I agree with the posts I have seen recently about toxic relationships shouldn't be glorified. I escaped a toxic relationship and when I see those stories I scroll away from them and they aren't appealing at all in more ways than one.

a lukewarm defense of ellie x abby/enemies to lovers as a whole

so to clarify what i was saying in the other post, i'm not disagreeing that abby could be straight/that you have good reason to believe that she's straight in canon. what i was saying in response to this was that if you're totally convinced that abby is straight, then that's great, i'm just not really sold on the idea that portraying her as queer betrays her characterization, since her sexuality + romantic life aren't a focal point of the games. (please note that i'm writing this under the assumption that your point is that writing a queer abby is synonymous to an ooc abby, which i really heavily disagree with. if this is just you saying that your personal characterization of abby is that she's straight and that you can't bring yourself to imagine her in a relationship with another woman, then that's a totally different thing and imo totally valid!)

this is my own personal take on fanwork and fanfiction, but i don't really take this as an indicator that the pairing shouldn't be written for. i personally wouldn't want to see ellie x abby in the next part, because to be executed well it would require the bulk of the plot.

when toxic pairings are glorified

first things first, i'm sorry you also had a bad experience! i've had my share of toxic relationships too and i'm glad we're on the same page about glorifying toxic relationships.

however, i don't use my fanfiction to moralize. there's a rather big difference between glorification and depiction, and i think it's my reader's responsibility to know where the line is. there's also, imo, a big difference between fanfiction that has some morally grey elements and flawed characters and fanfiction that's self-insert and makes your love interest an abusive asshole while still maintaining a joking/positive tone.

there's also a significant difference between pairings and self-insert, too. self-insert implies a sort of escapism, and it's sort of fucked up when the escapism being sought out includes toxicity. pairings are different people and don't have that same level of reader relation.

this all makes it sound like i'm going to purposefully write a toxic, shitty, unhealthy ellie x abby fic. which is not the case and leads me to my next point...

why i would write ellie x abby after joel's death: a short treatise on why i disrespect canon for sport

i have a lot to say about this one so i'll split this up into subsections

exhibit a: characterizations are sort of flexible

i say this with a caveat, because sometimes it's so clear when you pick up a piece of fic that a writer has no fucking clue what's going on and doesn't know how to write a character. but some of the best fanfictions i've read have taken a pairing i'd never see coming and would ordinarily disagree with and turned it into something insane, because odd pairings and circumstances that seem otherwise impossible require you to dig into what's left of a character after the most obvious character traits. on the surface, of course ellie would never be compatible with abby. but what about below that? that's something that you can only find out by writing it with your own personal interpretation of the characters.

exhibit b: genuine enemies to lovers is by definition a little iffy at first

real enemies to lovers has really gotten watered down lately, and i think that part of the problem is that so much fic is tagged as enemies to lovers when it's really just surface level tension that's resolved 1k words in (i myself am guilty of this, but i think it's important to point out anyway). it's supposed to feel impossible at first! they shouldn't start out with the characters making eyes at each other and by describing how crazy the sexual tension is in the air from the moment they meet, because that makes the payoff so much less rewarding. which leads me to my next point:

exhibit c: stirring the pot is fun

this is the reason why any fic i write for them would be set at least after joel's death and likely after seattle. if those events hadn't happened, it just wouldn't be a very interesting story. the challenge as the writer is to figure out how to get these two characters who have both immeasurably hurt the other person into a situation where, while still honoring their characteristics, they manage to adapt and see each other in a different light. that's why i like this pairing—not because i was picking up on mad chemistry between them and just want them to bang. from what i know about them, i feel like the potential for genuine character exploration/growth is crazy.

tldr: i see what you're saying! but the reasons you don't like the pairing are actually sort of the same reasons why i personally do...which is kind of an odd impasse to be at lol. anyway thank you so much for sending this in!!

4. which muse would you say is the most fun to write personally?

ahhhh that’s a tough question and it may come as a surprise bc i haven’t written her against many people, but i think chiyo is the most fun for me to write, followed closely by kaiya! it doesn’t surprise me bc chiyo is my oldest muse and the one i’m most attached to :’ ) and her personality for me is just very fun to write -- i get to write way too much about her personal feelings as well as write her being a filthy memer who sends you silly puns and weird videos at 2 am. she’s a muse who offers me the opportunity to write something serious like her growing to love herself and understanding people aren’t as fickle as she thinks while also giving me the chance to write her being silly and teasing and a big ol’ nerd. plus her personality sets the stage for nice slow burn friendships and romantic ships which are!! my favorite <3 overall 10/10 lady who i love to bits!!

and my sweet baby kaiya :’ ))) i love writing her bc she’s just so!!! good!!! actually she’s not just a good egg but the best egg!!!! she’s so soft and warm and accepting and so full of hope and light despite everything, and it makes writing her such a comfort tbh :’ ) she’s another character who thinks they’re the Worst, and once again, i have a lot of fun getting to write the development that goes into her changing the way she sees herself! plus i love getting to write flowery, pretty things with her bc she loves comparing people to nature and admiring the world around her :’ ))

let me just say tho!!! i have a ton of fun writing everyone on my blog, especially the ones i’ve had the pleasure of developing with my partners!!! chiyo and kaiya are just comfort oc’s for me at this point (´꒳`)♡

5. any difficult muses? Or ones that are hard to write for?

hmm, i’d say i usually have difficulty writing a muse if i let them sit for too long, which usually happens if i feel there isn’t a lot of interest for them. it’s kinda hard for me to remain excited when i feel alone in that excitement ;n; but sometimes i also just don’t connect as heavily to some muses, or i’m so focused on a certain character that i can’t wake up someone else. it used to be that way for sei! for the life of me, i couldn’t get his muse to wake up until recently. i dunno? his character just kinda woke up one evening like hey : ) write me being angsty : ) so i did and here i am writing him without too much difficulty!

i’ll also say canon muses are always harder for me to write, which is why a chunk of the ones i offer are on the “ secret ” muse roster. i only keep k.aigaku and s.uma openly available bc they’re the easiest ones for me to connect to, but my inspo for them can still waver, and i still choose my oc’s over them a lot of the time. k.aigaku not as much bc i’ve developed him so much, but still. i think this comes from my brain having a need to dissect and analyze every bit of info i’m given on a character, which takes time and rereading whereas with my oc’s, most of that knowledge is burned into my brain asdfg

Leon, your passion for all of your characters shine through in everything that you do. From your gorgeous writing, to your extensive, creative and complex lore building between your characters (looking at Markus and Jesse here), the love and the care that you put into writing is something truly special. The context to each muse is complex, and you're fantastic at digging deep into the humanity of each character, picking apart the flaws and victories of each of them. These little aspects of lore and world building adds so much depth and creativity that it's an absolutely treat to read.

Plotting with you ooc has routinely left my heart crushed on the ground, so if you count that as a victory, then so be it. It's so clear the development that you have for them shines through in your messages, adding to that lore. You let me ramble, at length, about my girl and then come up with the most heartbreaking ways that the pieces fit together with Markus and I could myself lucky for being able to to plot with you on a lot of this stuff. Your writing is absolutely gorgeous, your characters amazing, and you're a great and valued writer here in the RPC.
