They call you Bell.

You’re not entirely sure why.

Well… that’s not entirely true. You know why they call you Bell. It’s a callsign. Your callsign. Your very own special nickname. What you don’t know is why you’re the only one to have one.

Adler. Park. Sims. Woods. Mason. Lazar. Hudson.

You know call signs aren’t unusual. You’ve been a soldier for 10 years. No, 20. No 5? Since the war. Why can’t you remember? Years. You’ve worked with plenty of other soldiers who had codenames. From the KGB. M16. The Cia every unit you’ve been in, from every country you’ve visited. Butcher. Cub. Niagara. You know it’s normal in this field, something to both keep anonymity and keep things fun…

But they had reasons for their call signs. Stories. Memories attached to them… you don’t. The name ‘Bell’ doesn’t bring up any nostalgia or amusement to your mind. It’s been your callsign since Vietnam and you can’t even remember why-

You groan. The concrete floor of the safehouse seems to swim as another migraine comes on. You get them sometimes. A steady thump, thump, thump on the right side of your head. Right by your temple. You can’t fully muffle the low groan that falls from your lips as you rub the spot through your balaclava, feeling the small bump of a scar there. Arash. The fucker betrayed you. Shot you, the bullet barely missed. Blood stains the seats of the car and you’re sure you’re dead- How did you get that again?

“Everything alright, Bell?” Park asks. You jerk at the sudden noise. Looking up, you realize every eye in the safehouse is locked on you. Park takes a step forward and tilts her head the slightest bit, her lip quirks downward.

“Yeah, ‘m fine,” you mumble, “another migraine. Nothing major.”

Park lets out a deep breath, she gives a slight nod. You feel like you can breathe again too. You hate when they do that. Stare at you. You feel like someone on the team is always watching you. Like you aren’t on the same side as they are you’re not. You’re not. You’re not. Park walks away, going towards a drawer in the small office and returns with two small pills.

“Here. These should help.” She watches as you pop them in your mouth and swallow dry. Your head is starting to feel like someone’s taking an ax to your skull and you just want it to stop. “Better?”

“Don’t know. Just took ‘em.” You quip. Nobody laughs. You mumble out an apology but either none of them hear or none of them care. Probably a healthy mix of both.

“Take it easy, Bell.” Adler claps you on the back as he returns to his seat in the middle of the room. He does it a bit too hard, your body jolting slightly under the force and making your head swim some more. You give him a glare but he doesn’t even look back at you.

“Why does everybody even call me that anyway?” You ask.

He stiffens. He leans back in his seat, arms crossing. His blue eyes peer at you over the rim of his sunglasses and you suddenly feel cold. Your stomach churns like you might be sick.

“What do you mean by that?” He asks.

“My call sign,” you clarify, “What’s the story behind it?” For one, brief moment, the safehouse is quiet enough to hear a pin drop. Nobody seems to breathe. Nobody seems to move. There is no wind. No rumble of cars driving down the shitty dirt road outside. All you hear is your own breathing and the pounding in your head that currently reminds you of a siren. You feel strange, an odd sense of otherness settles deep in your bones. It almost feels like you don’t belong here. The pounding on your head resembles the pounding on a door. A red door. A bunker door. Perseus. He thinks you’re a traitor. He thinks you betrayed him. He must be so disappointed in you.

“Bell.” Adler finally says, he seems to force his muscles to relax. “As in ‘ring a bell’. We started calling you that during the war. You could never seem to remember anything.” He leans back against the table like he usually does, his eyes hidden safely behind his sunglasses once more. You look towards the evidence board, just in case you have to look into them again.

Comment la ville de Courbevoie est devenue un leader mondial dans la lutte contre le gaspillage alimentaire (par Arash DERAMBARSH dans REVUE POLITIQUE ET PARLEMENTAIRE).

Depuis l’adoption de la loi contre le gaspillage alimentaire, votée le 11 février 2016, les supermarchés ont l’obligation de reverser leurs invendus à des associations caritatives.[1]

Ainsi, cette loi a rapidement prouvé ses effets bénéfiques : plus de 10 millions de repas sont distribués chaque année en France. Cela représente une augmentation de 22 % des dons alimentaires destinés aux associations caritatives.

De plus, nous veillons à la bonne application de la loi.

Accompagnés de lanceurs d’alerte et d’huissiers de justice, nous n’avons cessé d’inspecter les poubelles à côté des supermarchés pour constater les atteintes à la loi.

Après avoir constaté que plusieurs magasins continuaient de jeter les invendus alimentaires à la poubelle, nous avons déposé de nombreuses plaintes à leur encontre. Les procédures fonctionnent et sont un moyen de dissuasion efficace. Sans compter les « Bad buzz » et la mauvaise réputation des magasins récalcitrants.

Mais cela n’a pas suffi et il fallait donc aller plus loin.

Ainsi qui mieux qu’une municipalité pour appliquer la loi contre le gaspillage alimentaire et devenir un laboratoire mondial ?

La ville de Courbevoie a reçu les agents de l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO) le 2 vendredi février 2024.

Ils sont venus de Rome pour constater et valider l’officialisation d’un chiffre record : 400 000 repas ont été économisés et redistribués à des associations caritatives pour que les démunis (classe moyenne représentant des mères ou pères célibataires élevant plusieurs enfants, des retraités, des chômeurs ou encore des étudiants) puissent manger à leur faim.[2]

Cette situation sociale démontre d’ailleurs que même dans une ville d’apparence « riche », la pauvreté a de multiples facettes. La pauvreté augmente et la classe moyenne décline.

Ainsi dans un rapport alarmant, le Secours Catholique a estimé que près de 10 % des Français ont recours à l’aide alimentaire.[3]

En effet, « entre 5 et 7 millions de personnes » ont eu recours à l’aide alimentaire en 2020 alerte le Secours Catholique dans son rapport annuel sur l’état de la pauvreté en France publié sur la base des données de la Direction générale de la cohésion sociale (DGCS).[4]

La ville de Courbevoie a donc fait preuve d’inventivité dans sa lutte contre le gaspillage alimentaire.[5]

Depuis 2020, avec son Maire Jacques Kossowski, nous avons lancé une campagne pour mettre fin au gaspillage alimentaire.

En France, le mandat d’un élu municipal est de six ans. L’objectif était donc de faire de notre ville un laboratoire mondial.

Avant toute chose, il convenait de faire un premier constat.

Depuis le 11 février 2016, la règle interdisant le gaspillage alimentaire est limitée aux seuls magasins de plus de 400 m2.

La loi a permis la distribution de plus de 10 millions de repas par an et ses effets positifs se sont immédiatement fait sentir.

C’est en effet une hausse de plus de 22 % d’invendus alimentaires qui sont destinés chaque année aux associations caritatives.

Cette loi a été applaudie dans le monde entier.

Mais au niveau local, il y a encore des marges de manœuvres permettant de faire reculer ce fléau.

En effet, cette loi exonère les deux tiers des supermarché implantés à Courbevoie car leur surface de vente est inférieure à 400 m².

Il a donc été décidé qu’avec l’aide de plusieurs start-up et acteurs sociaux et économiques, une charte contre le gaspillage alimentaire serait votée chaque année dans toutes les sphères d’activité de la ville :

2020 avec tous les supermarchés situés dans la ville sans délimitation de superficie

2021 avec restauration hospitalière

2022 avec restauration scolaire

2023 auprès des commerces alimentaires (commerces de bouche, restaurants, boulangeries, marchés)

2024 avec les maisons de retraite

Ces chartes d’engagement, une première en France, ont un objectif multiple :

Créer des synergies pour que chacun puisse prendre part à ce combat et adapter ses pratiques

Participer à la sensibilisation du grand public à la lutte contre le gaspillage alimentaire

Contribuer à réduire l’impact économique de ces déchets

Mettre en place des partenariats de dons alimentaires en faveur des associations conformément à la loi

Promouvoir les partenariats avec les associations municipales

Organiser des promotions « anti-gaspi », notamment pour les produits proches de la date limite de consommation (DLC)

Proposer des ventes en gros ou à l’unité afin d’adapter les quantités achetées et réduire les emballages

Favoriser le développement des produits frais, et développer des opérations marketing de sensibilisation (opération « Fruits et Légumes Moches », etc.)

Mener une discussion avec les fournisseurs afin de définir une stratégie de contrôle contre le gaspillage alimentaire (chartes qualité des produits, etc.)

Agir pour valoriser les déchets.

Par ailleurs, le 24 octobre 2022, la ville de Courbevoie a organisé une réunion de travail à l’Assemblée nationale dans le but de proposer un amendement à la législation française contre le gaspillage alimentaire. Les députés Karl Olive et Philippe Juvin étaient présents à la réunion.[6]

La proposition était simple : modifier la loi contre le gaspillage alimentaire promulguée le 11 février 2016.[7]

La ville de Courbevoie a spécifiquement proposé les amendements suivants :

Réduire le plafond actuel de 400 m2 imposé aux supermarchés pour le réduire à au moins 100 m2 afin d’inclure plus de 5 000 points de vente supplémentaires.

Augmenter les amendes actuelles de la 5ème classe représentant 10 000 euros à 20 000 euros contre les supermarchés qui continuent de jeter les invendus alimentaires consommables.

Fort de tout ce travail, la FAO a désigné la ville de Courbevoie « Ville verte mondiale » en 2024, lui accordant ainsi une reconnaissance formelle.

Nous appelons ainsi toutes les communes à décliner ces chartes qui ne coûtent rien aux contribuables.

Comme le rappellent les rapports du projet DrawDown (2020) et du GIEC (2022), la réduction du gaspillage alimentaire est l’une des trois principales solutions pour lutter contre le réchauffement climatique.

Nous ne dirons pas que nous n’étions pas informés.

And help themselves (aka steal) to a late night treat with their beloved master

It's hot as fuckin' shit. 90° F and it ends up that warm inside my grandmother's house. I survive on ice cream and ice packs.

Master is having the worst time sleeping on a sweaty summer night. They're uncomfortably toasty and have a mighty need for sustenance. Yan Qing and Robin Hood come to the rescue. (Separately.)

Yan Qing

When Master asks Yan Qing for boba, he stops pacing mid-step. He turns to look at them. A look of confusion stretches across his face. There’s almost something comical about his apparent distress.

He dramatically recalls a recent game of paintball he played with Billy the Kid and Arash. They went for a snack afterwards. Upon hearing a young woman order "boba," Billy hooked his arms around both men's shoulders and asked if they wanted "boba these nuts." Arash asked what this meant. Yan Qing pretended he didn't know. Billy was mortified.

Yan Qing has a vague idea of what boba tea is. It's far after his time, but he does like when cultural artifacts from his home gain popularity. It gives him a sense of nostalgic pride (and dissonance, because he is conflicted about Taiwan).

Master has to drag Yan Qing out of his riveting conversation with himself and also his other self. He puts up a fuss at first, busy arguing over whether or not "boba deez nuts" was offensive. Master convinces him that he'll have to try said boba before he can decide whether or not Billy's dumb comment was worth kicking his ass over.

Unseeable, untouchable, he breaches the locally-owned cafe Master likes. Once inside he opens the back door for them to join him. There's a chill and a thrill that passes between Yan Qing and his Master. The satisfaction of doing something bad and getting away with it is overwhelming.

First they have to do something bad, though. Neither of them is interested in the till or the safe. Stealing goods that are packed as a donation to a food bank would be gross. Taking ingredients back to Master's residence would leave them with armfuls of materials they couldn't effectively use. It seems they have no choice but to make their bubble tea on-site.

Neither of them know how to make bubble tea. Master makes a face at this realization and Yan Qing cackles wildly at their misfortune. Thankfully they have the power of the internet and mobile data at their disposal. Master reads a few recipes and scans an article and Yan Qing looms over their shoulder as he so quickly catches up to their reading.

The recipe, he thinks, should be easy enough. It would be easier if he’d ever made anything like it in his life. The tea is easy. Yan Qing can brew tea. He can brew tea with the best of ‘em. But what’s with the tapioca balls? Why are they so squishy? What is he supposed to do with them? He wants to juggle them, or throw them. It’s very distracting.

Master pulls him out of his daze. They instruct him to brew the tea while they take care of everything else. Black tea is the common tea for boba, according to the page Master has pulled up on their phone. Yan Qing is not in the mood for black tea. He also doesn’t think iced coffee is appropriate at this hour. Chai tea, maybe? He likes chai tea lattes with soy milk. Milk isn’t necessary for one’s health, did you know, Master? There’s a conspiracy afoot in big dairy where decades have gone to advertising milk to produce more profits than—

Perhaps Yan Qing should acquire different friends.

Robin Hood

Master hobbles out of their sleeping quarters at about 05:00. Robin Hood is kicked back waiting for the sun to rise. When Master shuffles over to him, he nearly jumps out of his skin. Nobody needs to exist this early.

It appears Master cannot sleep, for Master has a mighty need that must be met: the need to fuckin' chill. They're hungry and whiny from being stuck unable to sleep all night. The likelihood of agitation in the morrow is too damn high.

This is not what Robin is contracted with his Master for, but he has a feeling this isn't the weirdest or least convenient thing they're ever going to ask of him.

Under normal circumstances, Robin would prefer to support a local stand or shop that makes and serves their own ice cream. He likes when the worker is connected to the output of their labor–when they own the means of production, as it were. This in mind, the logical course of action is for Robin to hit up Corporate Ice Cream Chain Location for Master's favorites.

He must correct himself on that, because Robin doesn't like calling…whatever-it-is Corporate Ice Cream sells "ice cream." It is "frozen dairy dessert" or something like it. It could be neither frozen, nor dairy, nor dessert, and still labeled as ice cream.

After a quick trip riding Robin's back like a sleepy koala, Master is sat down on the roof of Corporate Ice Cream Chain Location. He props them against the nearest clean-ish looking brick structure. While they listen to birds sing to sunrise (tweet tweet food caw caw sex), Robin condenses himself into spirit form and sprinkles into the building.

The weak security warrants no effort. He isn't surprised by how little there is. Between his cloak and the incompetence of the camera setup, Robin can say quite comfortably nobody is going to see him on the recordings.

Corporate Ice Cream's backrooms are dismal. They're pitch black save for blinking lights on whirring machines with ominous silhouettes. Robin is definitely not scared, but he is unsettled. It helps that he has Darkvision like any shifty rogue worth his salt. Super Secret Agent Spy music plays in his head. It's a playful tune from a movie he watched with Master. It makes him feel dangerous and sexy.

The current conditions are not dangerous, and they are also not sexy. It's cold as shit (a pleasant contrast to the outdoors, which are currently hot as shit) and that's about it.

Robin almost feels bad for potentially ruining some minimum wage worker's day. Almost. But he chose this location because it's an act against their employer. It's not his fault they're hostages under the milky boot of corporate ice cream.

He returns to the roof with four white plastic tubs with frost on the sides. He tries to peek around them and fails. Master takes two of them, and together they escape back to their base of operations.

He treats the flora and plants like they're babies, glass babies that could come to harm. It was endearing to a fault and all Grayson wanted to do was squish his cheeks and call him cute. Inappropriate, maybe, but the guy was adorable and just watching had the florist wanted to hear him talk for hours. His gaze is unabashed as he watches Arash, arms folded over his chest, lips quirked into a smile. ❝ ━ You're becoming a regular here, sir. I'm beginning to think you're gonna be a permanent fixture soon. ❞ It's a light jest, but the truth is, it's nice seeing him frequent the shop. Grayson wonders if he feels a sort of kinship with the place and among the plants and flora. It wouldn't have been the first time.

HE HAD ALWAYS HELD a fondness for plants. There was something altogether endearing about looking after such fragile things, although he had never had a chance to do that when he had been alive. Then again, he probably wouldn’t have been able to do that back then either when he thought about it. Reaching out, he allowed his fingers to gently brush against one of the more leafier plants, Arash’s lips already curling into a small, fond smile. ❝They sure take good care of you little guys, huh?❞ He wasn’t an expert when it came to things like this, but even so, he could tell. The leaves were healthy, and since walking about the store on a regular, he noticed that none of the plants looked remotely sickly or neglected. ❝Wonder how he does it? Maybe I should get some lessons. If I took one of you home, you might end up croaking with me as your caretaker.❞

Perhaps that was why he liked coming here sometimes. For Arash, this was his way of having plants without actually having plants – as silly as that sounded. The sound of another’s voice broke him out of his reverie, his attention shifting away from the plant to them. ❝Heh, I guess I do come here quite a lot. It’s just that I’m always in the area, and it’s near to certain places I like frequenting so it just feels right to come over here and see how things are doing.❞ He paused. ❝Ah, not that I think there’s a need to. You’ve been treating these guys pretty well. Bet if they could talk, they’d be singing your praises.❞ Arash’s own words are a light jest; the smile on his lips growing that much wider for it.

Wearables to Detect Heart Disease: Patients Most at Risk Less Likely to Use them

What are the main findings? Response: Wearable devices are shown to have multiple health-related features, including heart rate and activity monitoring, ECG tracing, and blood pressure monitoring. In our analyses of the nationally-representative Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS), we discovered that patients with and at risk of cardiovascular disease are less likely to use wearables. Older patients, patients with lower education, and patients with lower incomes are less likely to use wearables. Also, among adults with access to wearables, patients with cardiovascular disease use their devices less frequently as compared to the overall population. MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report? Response: At the Cardiovascular Data Science (CarDS) Lab at Yale, we wanted to understand the patterns of wearable uptake among US adults. Our study shows that patients with or at risk of heart disease, who could benefit most from using wearables, are less likely to use them. Wearables can play a key role in developing innovative public health strategies for the screening and management of cardiovascular disease. We should explore supporting wearables as health devices to ensure that their distribution in the population is fair and equitable. MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a results of this study? Response: The lower use of wearables in patients with known worse outcomes can lead to an increase in disparities in health outcomes. Our findings highlight the need for supporting innovative technologies as health devices so they can reach all demographic subgroups. Further research should be conducted to explore the reasons for the existing disparities and solutions for a fairer distribution of wearables in the population. Large, national surveys should include questions about access to health technology including mobile health (m-Health) and wearable devices. Any disclosures?
