Favorite Intrepid Heroes Characters:
Now that I have finished watching all of the Dimension 20 campaigns (currently running one notwithstanding, obviously), I want to talk about my favorite characters played by the Intrepid Heroes!
Emily Axford:
Okay, listen, Emily is a very talented player who knows how to make a character work, but this was the easiest call for me. I am in love with Unsleeping City's Sofia Bicicleta Lee, she is one of my favorite PCs overall.
The badass martial arts wife of the ultimate wife guy, whose best friend is a talking rat. Plus, she looks like Fran Drescher and I mean, c'mon, I'm just a lesbian born in the early 90s. How could I not.
I'm afraid I don't have a 'close' second for Emily, because all her characters are great and close together, but Sofia shoots out for me.
Lou Wilson:
It's kind of funny how Lou and Emily are inherently linked for me in this, because until I watched ACoFaF, I thought I'd be putting Unsleeping City's Kingston Brown down here.
However, absolutely everything A Court of Fey and Flowers' Squak Airavis has going on is so utterly impeccable. He is such a queer mess, it's amazing. (And it's linked to Emily, because something very important about him is his dynamic with his dear cousin Chirp.)
Zac Oyama:
I'm glad that ACoFaF made me pick Squak for Lou, because otherwise, this would feel like just a list of Unsleeping City characters, because for Zac, it's so very clearly and definitely Ricky Matsui.
The ultimate himbo. The courageous firefighter with his good boy puppy. Absolute wife guy even though he takes too damn long to figure that getting-married-part out. I love Ricky so, so, so much.
Though, second place shout-out to Colin Provolone from Ravening War, that lil cheese knight was so much fun to enjoy and he had so much tension, it was incredible.
Brian Murphy:
My favorite Fantasy High PC - Riz 'The Ball' Gukgak, hands down. That wanna be detective boy is too precious, plus, as an ace I was so, so, so hyped and excited about the rep in him.
Second place shout-out, once more, to Unsleeping City and... surprisingly, to Cody Walsh. I love Kugrash a whole lot, but there was something utterly hilarious to Cody.
Siobhan Thompson:
Hers was my favorite character on A Starstruck Odyssey - I love Riva. They were also such a refreshing flavor for Siobhan, honestly? They were utterly precious and adorable and sweet.
Second place... okay, look, it's Unsleeping City again, yeah. But out of the two characters she played, I actually loved Iga Lisowski more. The Polish mom who guards the dragon. Amazing character pitch, honestly.
Ally Beardsley:
Actually genuinely the hardest choice because Ally is amazing at creating characters. But as a lesbian with a certain type, I am obliged to say A Starstruck Odyssey's Margaret Encino. A hot lady with a purpose and a load of money. When they started calling her Mommy? Oh boy fans self. It was also so much fun to see a character who didn't really do combat but actually got so much done with business calls. Competence is sexy, y'all.
Second place goes to Lars Vandenchomp from Mice and Murder though. Love me a loyal himbo and they were such a good puppy? Amazing.

Christmas Reruns 2023 Day 14: The Yuletide Challenge (1/3)

Merry Christmas if you celebrate it and happy holidays if you don’t!  One of the things I love about Christmas is watching reruns of all the old classic Christmas movies–Christmas is a big time for nostalgia.  A few years ago, I decided to incorporate that tradition into my fandom life and post my CS holiday reruns.  So here you go!  Enough holiday (mostly) fluff to get you to New Year’s Day. (With a new story posting on Christmas Day.)

Today’s story is an AU based on this prompt from @kmomof4​: Character A vows to do something nice for a stranger during the Christmas time. Character B is that stranger. It was written in 2017.

Emma took a deep breath, smoothed down her tight red dress, and stepped through the doors of The Rabbit Hole, the premiere bar in the tiny town of Storybrooke, Maine, and scanned the interior for some poor, sad soul who looked in need of Christmas cheer.  She rolled her eyes.  How the hell had she let Mary Margaret talk her into this?
It all started the week before, when Emma had gone to her adoptive brother David’s and her sister-in-law Mary Margaret’s loft apartment for Thanksgiving dinner.  Emma had never been a big holiday person.  Growing up in the system, being in and out of group homes, she’d never really had a family to spend the special days with, at least until David’s mom, Ruth had taken her in just before her fifteenth birthday.  By that point, Emma was used to being a loner, and she preferred it that way.  If you don’t let people in, they can’t hurt you, right?  Most Thanksgivings and Christmases, even now that she was an adult with a brother and sister-in-law she loved, were spent alone, take-out and Netflix her big holiday companions.
But after a bad break up with her longtime boyfriend, (what had she ever seen in Walsh, that idiotic flying monkey!) Emma had decided it was time for a change.  She’d packed up her swanky New York apartment and relocated to Storybrooke where there was a job as her brother, the sheriff’s, deputy was waiting for her.  And with Emma living in the same town during the holidays, Mary Margaret simply would not take no as an answer to her invitation to have Thanksgiving dinner with the family.
Emma had to admit dinner with the family had been nice.  There was something so damn heartwarming about sharing a holiday with the ones she loved.
It was only after the feast had been consumed, the dishes had been washed, and the post-meal nap had been taken that things took a rather unfortunate turn.
Mary Margaret got awkwardly to her feet (it was one of the drawbacks of being nearly 7 months pregnant, after all) and clinked her water glass to get everyone’s attention.
“So David and I have been thinking,” she’d said.  “We thought it would be a good idea to start a new family tradition during the holiday season.”
Emma was immediately on alert.  When her sister in law had that look in her eyes it always spelled trouble.  “Um…okay?  Just what kind of tradition are we talking about?”
“The Yuletide challenge!” Mary Margaret said excitedly.
“I have a feeling I’m going to regret asking this,” Emma said, “but what exactly is a Yuletide challenge?”
“I saw an article about it in the holiday edition of my favorite magazine, Storybrooke Today,” Mary Margaret said.  “Basically, the idea is to spread Christmas cheer to the people who need it most.”
Emma crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow.  “Yeah, I don’t really do the whole ‘Christmas cheer’ thing.”
“Oh come on, Emma!” Mary Margaret insisted.  “Christmas is the season of giving!  At least listen to the whole idea before rejecting it.  I promise this challenge will make us all feel warm and fuzzy inside.”
The puppy dog eyes.  Her sister in law was giving her the puppy dog eyes.  She wasn’t playing fair.  Not at all.
“It actually sounds like a pretty interesting idea, Emma,” David said, backing up his wife after she tossed him a pointed look. 
Emma sighed.  “Fine.  What exactly are the rules of this whole Yuletide challenge thing?”
Mary Margaret’s smile could light up the sun.  “Each of us will find a person in town—someone we don’t know, or at least don’t know well—who seems down on their luck, or sad, or just in general in need of cheer.  We make it our mission to do little acts of kindness for that person throughout the season.  You’ve got to do at least one good thing for them per week, and once you’ve picked your person, there’s no going back!  That’s your person for the season.  Could be by Christmas time we’ll each have a brand new friend!”
Emma wasn’t a people person.  She didn’t do random acts of kindness for strangers.  She kept to herself and let them keep to themselves.  Life was just better that way.  Still…Mary Margaret was really excited about this idea.  What could it hurt to spread a little kindness during the busiest, most hectic time of year?
“Alright,” Emma said on another sigh.  “Count me in.  I’ll take the Yuletide challenge.”
And that’s how Emma found herself in a bar, dressed to impress, looking for someone who looked sad and down on his luck.  It was nearing the end of the first week of December, and she’d yet to find her victim…er giftee.  She had to find someone fast before she forfeited the challenge before even beginning.
Emma saw him right away, as though a magnet had drawn her eyes to him.  He was handsome (hot as hell, really), with his soft black hair, mesmerizing blue eyes, dusting of scruff, jeans and black leather jacket.  But it wasn’t his looks that immediately drew Emma to him.  It was the dejected, almost despairing look on his face as he nursed his glass of rum at his lonely table at the back of the establishment.  If anyone needed a little Christmas cheer, it was this guy.
Squaring her shoulders, Emma walked purposefully to his table.  He looked up at the sound of her stiletto heels moving across the floor, his eyes showing surprise and appreciation as he took in the sight of her.
“This seat taken?” she asked, reaching for the chair across from him.
He waved with his right hand.  “Be my guest, love.”
The smooth, British accent, combined with his far above average looks did things to her insides.  Emma turned away, taking the chair.  Get it together, Swan!  You’re not some teenager who gets crushes on hot strangers!
“So, my name’s Emma Swan,” she said.  “And who might you be?”
“Killian Jones,” he answered, “but people have taken to calling me by my more colorful moniker.  Hook.”
The man raised his left arm, and Emma noticed the nautical hook which sat in place of a hand.  Well that wasn’t weird or anything. “Um…why do you have a hook instead of a hand?”
Smooth Emma.  Really smooth. Nothing like starting out the Yuletide challenge with a major faux pas.
One dark eyebrow rose and a half smile draped his lips.  “I’ve always been fascinated with Captain Hook, so after I lost the hand, my Halloween costume was rather obvious.  The hook has proven so bloody useful, I simply chose to keep it.”
“Oh, well…sorry about your hand.”
A shadow passed over his face.  “Aye, well, it’s been five years, almost to the day since the accident.”  He closed his eyes for a moment, then drained his glass in one gulp, hastily pouring himself another.
If Emma didn’t miss her guess, and she rarely did, an ability to read people was one of the things that made her one of the best bail bonds persons New York had ever seen, there was more to the story, than simply the loss of a hand.  The poor guy was in misery even alluding to the event.
Nice job, Emma.  Instead of spreading Christmas cheer, you’ve managed to make this guy relive his worst memory.
“Killian….I’m sorry…”
He waved her off.  “It’s no matter, Swan.  Seems it’s a night for melancholy musings, but I survived.  Now, I’d rather discuss something pleasanter if you don’t mind.  What exactly brought such a beautiful woman to my table on this cold winter’s night?”
Emma took a deep breath.  Here goes nothing.  “So I was wondering if you’d help me with something.”
His eyebrow rose in question.
“Let me buy your next round,” she said, “and then, well, maybe I could do some nice things for you.”
His expression changed in an instant.  Surprise and melancholy replaced with pure lasciviousness.  “That’s quite the offer, darling.  It’s not every day a gorgeous woman offers herself as my Christmas gift.”
Emma felt her face flame.  “Oh my gods!  I wasn’t propositioning you, Killian!”  (Though…if he kept looking at her like that…well, there was no telling what might come of this night.)
He sighed dramatically.  “My profound loss.  So, Swan, if you weren’t asking me for what, I assure you would be a very, very pleasant roll in the sheets, what precisely were you offering?”
“You see, my sister-in-law, Mary Margaret, had this idea for the holiday season….”  And with that she laid out the whole sappy challenge for him.  “And, I don’t know.  You just look like you could use a friend.  So what do you say?”
Killian took a long sip of his rum, and Emma tried her best not to watch his Adam’s apple bob as he swallowed, not to follow the line down to his firm chest where luscious, abundant chest hair peeked out from beneath a partially buttoned shirt.  “Oh I don’t know, Swan.  I rather think spending a night together in my bed would count as a kindness.”
She rolled her eyes.  “Yeah, not happening.  We’re talking warm, fuzzy, purely platonic acts of kindness.”
He sighed dramatically, and she grinned in spite of herself.  He was such an idiot.  But…he was an adorable idiot, and she couldn’t help but sense she’d enjoy the time she’d inevitably spend with him, should he accept her offer.
A soft, almost shy smile replaced the teasing on his face.  “Very well, Emma.  I will be the recipient of your challenge.”

About Emma Swan

Canon divergences:
The damage done by the system, by her terrible life before getting to Storybrooke and the traumas she lived there as well have changed her personality from the one in the show to a less socially adapted, more emotion-driven one (as in she may snap at her parents too, at first, because overwhelmed, and she will call people out regardless of who they are, she clearly has no healthy routine/eating habits/sleeping habits).
It was very implied if not shown that she was severely abused in the system by foster parents who took in children just to get the money that comes from it, she chose to be homeless as a pre-teen/in her early teens and was only convinced by August to walk back into the system, she was back to homeless by age 16. Her life in general is a disaster in too many ways to count, constant abandonment and betrayals, there is not ONE relationship in her life, whether friendly or romantic, in which she's not backstabbed or left behind/abandoned for the first 28 years of her life and I believe it's only due to the show magic that she's not beyond help at this point, it's just not realistic otherwise, especially adding the traumas after she comes to Storybrooke, and that also means that her need to run away from commitment doesn't leave as quickly as it did in canon BUT nor does her desperate need to be close to her family, to have that love she always wanted, because Emma blatantly never fully gave up on it. Keep in mind that even villains in OUAT have known love, have been loved by at least one parent or sibling or romantic partner, Emma had none of that (that she knew of).
Her instincts drive her to be the romantic unrealistic fairy tale princess she was meant to be, and that is also shown when she basically acts like a cute fairy tale princess even while homeless, simply because she found Neal and she thinks they'll be family: princess-y cute dresses, happy, hopeful, domestic, despite literally sleeping in a car. But all of her traumas fight against those instincts.
-Which is also why once she and Killian start seeing each other she'll tell him a LOT about her past, if only to explain why she can't control the urge to pull back every now and then, to run, to be unnecessarily snappy. Up to you how Killian will react to it, given that in canon she was quickly softened by their relationship but also didn't share right away (even if he did see through her early on).
Here to write canon divergent ways for her to fall in love with Hook or more about their domestic time, AND different ways for the lost girl to get closer to her parents while still so traumatized.
She will never be friends with Regina but feel forced to play nice to keep the town safe, and she will be far more defensive/angry about Neal and what he did to her, while they’ll still co-parent until his death: let's not forget that regardless of his reasons she spent years thinking that he must have used her, tricked her and left her to take the fall while he kept the money (also confirmed by the fact that that's the version of the story she gives Henry in New York when her memories are rewritten). If we write that Gold followed canon in the background she also hates him to death from the moment he enslaved Killian regardless of the context (and tried to kill them both soon after). This has nothing to do with my enjoyment of Rumple/Gold as a character, and other muses of mine would be open to him. This is CHARACTER based, as in I cannot imagine Emma forgiving him after he took Killian's heart, much less trusting him anywhere near her family, and being sort of forced by circumstances to let Henry see him both because Henry would see him anyway and to avoid an actual war. She's also very hurt/disgusted by Walsh, considering the two SLEPT TOGETHER, planned a LIFE TOGETHER, while he was simply keeping an eye on her, ready to kill her for the Wicked Witch. Any joke about it will be met with pain and disgust.
The events of Dark One Emma can be entirely rewritten or left the way they are, but she will be absolutely hurt and angry by her family being so hostile and distrusting, regardless of them being right or not, while letting Regina and Gold participate in the 'what do we do now' discussions; she would have been far more like the Emma who questioned Regina about her past and any attempt from Regina/Gold to judge her would be met with instant aggression and a list of crimes they committed. She doesn't regret anything, as it is exactly what her parents and everyone else would have done and have done for their true loves all the time: trusting that things would work out even if there was a huge risk.

Harry and the Hendersons (1987)

I’ve had some bad experiences with Bigfoot movies. I remember enjoying Abominable, which is basically Rear Window with a Skunk Ape. Sasquatch, with Lance Henriksen is so bad you’re better off forgetting it. Most examples of the "genre" either fall into the offensive category. At best you'll get something so bad it's good again (I recommend Nightclaws if that’s what you’re looking for). After all these horror movies, it was a surprise to find a gentle, family friendly and charming Abominable Snowman film in the form of Harry and the Hendersons even more surprising is that it's good!
While on a family hunting/camping trip, the Hendersons – father George (John Lithgow), mother Nancy (Melinda Dillon) and their two children Sarah (Margaret Langrick) and Ernie (Joshua Rudoy) – hit a Sasquatch with their car. Unaware that it’s merely knocked out, they strap it to the roof of their vehicle and bring it home.
Created by Rick Baker, “Harry” is a marvellous special effect. You can’t tell whether it’s someone in a suit and makeup or an elaborate electronic. I’m sure it’s a mixture of both but the creature’s movements, its facial expressions, the way it’s shot make it completely convincing. If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear they actually had a Sasquatch on-screen.
This is not a frightening film at all, but if you’re looking to make one, you’ve got to see the way director William Dear handles Harry. You are slowly teased the design. As the Hendersons peer over what they think is a carcass that would send any cryptozoologist into an ocean of ectasy, you see just enough to wet your appetite. You’ll be on your tiptoes trying to peer over the edge of your TV to see Harry’s face and when they finally show the creature in its full glory, you’re blown away. The special effects give Harry a wonderfully expressive face that conveys emotions you instantly relate to. Even without any dialogue, Harry becomes an instantly lovable entity.
The film also features a surprisingly strong character arc for John Lithgow’s character, George. A run-of-the-mill picture would have an obvious change that goes something like this: at first, he doesn’t like Harry. Maybe he wants to kill, or sell the creature for money. By the end, he’d consider Harry a friend or a member of the family. In Harry and the Hendersons, the character is deeper than that. We learn about George's relationship with his father (M. Emmet Walsh), what made him the man he is today and where he’ll go in the future. John Lithgow is a great actor and it’s satisfying to see that he isn’t simply walking around in a dumb role while shenanigans happen around the house. There’s a moment where he spends time drawing a promotional poster for his father’s store and the way that plays out hit a strong cord with me.
There are plenty of laughs and warm emotions found throughout the film. Even the villains are not really that bad and the conclusion resists the obvious, lame decisions we often see in children’s films. Instead, it opts for the right choice and pursues the tone it’s had throughout all the way through.
I’m not going to call the picture a classic. You can’t help but compare the film to E.T. and this just isn't on that same level. Some of the characters are dropped halfway through and not all of the jokes work… but that’s ok. It's the perfect pick for a family movie night that includes both the young and the old. James Cagney in The Public Enemy (William A. James Cagney has always seemed to me the movies' greatest loner, and the film that made him a star bears that out. The scene that brings it home for me is the one in which Cagney's Tom Powers is hiding out from the rival mob, and the woman named Jane (Mia Marvin) who looks after him gets him drunk and seduces him. In the morning, when he remembers that they had sex, he's shocked and slaps her, then storms out of the hideout. It's a less famous scene than the one in which he shoves a grapefruit in Mae Clarke's face, but that's partly because the scene with Jane was cut by the censors after the Production Code went into effect; it was restored only after the movie made it onto video. The two scenes are similar in suggesting that although Cagney's characters aren't exactly chaste, they don't connect with women except for their mothers, like Beryl Mercer's Ma in The Public Enemy or Margaret Wycherly's Ma Jarrett in White Heat (Raoul Walsh, 1949). Almost every major leading man of the 1930s and 1940s can be identified with his on-screen teamwork with a leading lady (or two): Cary Grant with Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy likewise, James Stewart with Jean Arthur or Margaret Sullavan, Clark Gable with Jean Harlow or Joan Crawford, Gary Cooper with Barbara Stanwyck or Marlene Dietrich, and so on. But Cagney never struck sparks with any of his leading ladies. He seems too coiled and defensive to give up any part of himself to a woman. In The Public Enemy, he's matched with Harlow, who does her best to thaw him out, but their scenes are not particularly memorable. In his private life, Cagney was notable for having married only once and having stayed married from 1922 till his death in 1986, without rumors of extramarital dalliance, something of an anomaly in Hollywood. The Public Enemy uses this enclosed quality of Cagney's to good effect, and it's a tribute to whoever made the decision to give him the lead -- claimants include director William A. Wellman and producer Darryl F. Zanuck -- after initially casting him in the secondary role of Matt Doyle, played by the now mostly forgotten Edward Woods. It's largely thanks to Cagney that The Public Enemy still hold up today, even though it has some of the stiffness and uncertainty of early talkies, especially when it comes to dialogue. Robert Emmett O'Connor, for example, who plays Paddy Ryan, tends to introduce long pauses between sentences when he's delivering his lines, as if afraid that the audience won't keep up with what he's saying.

Sitting beside the ocean, Maggie already felt more at peace with herself. Despite NYC being surrounded by different bodies of water, she’d never lived quite close enough to see it every day. To smell the air, feel the change within. Now she was able to sit right along the Gulf of Maine, guitar out and a smile on her face. She’d always been fiddly, needing something to do with her hands, even when she was in her element. It wasn’t a hard melody she was strumming by any means, but she hadn’t had a chance to in her old apartment unless she happened to get home from work at just the right time. She was enjoying herself, toes digging into the sand, humming along on a quiet section of the beach she hadn’t noticed anyone near. No one, that is, until she felt a shadow looming over her. She looked up, offering the stranger a smile.
“You’re free to sit down, you know? I promise I don’t play that poorly.”

The shooting schedule ran between April 10 and August 18, 1944, with retakes plus additional segments filmed on December 22, 1944 and then between January 25 and February 6, 1945. The film was first proposed in 1939. 
Synopsis ~ We meet a grayed, immaculately garbed Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. in Paradise (his diary entry reads "Another heavenly day"), where he looks down upon the world and muses over the sort of show he'd be putting on were he still alive.

Although they appear in different segments, this is the only feature film collaboration between “I Love Lucy co-stars" Lucille Ball and William Frawley. Coincidently, Frawley's character in this film shares a striking similarity with his iconic character of Fred Mertz on “I Love Lucy.” In this film he plays a money-hungry curmudgeon of a landlord, much like the show. In the above photo, he appears with director Minnelli and co-star Brice.

In February 1956, Lucy and Desi appeared on “MGM Parade” to promote their MGM film Forever Darling. The show also included footage of Lena Horne singing from Ziegfeld Follies.

Lucy also played a showgirl in pink in “Lucy Gets Into Pictures” (ILL S4;E19) aired on February 21, 1955. The scene was inspired by Ziegfeld’s legendary stage shows featuring beautiful women wearing elaborate costumes navigating long staircases. To solidify the comparison, Ricky says he is going to a meeting with Mr. Minnelli. Vincente Minnelli was one of the directors of Ziegfeld Follies.

Lucy Ricardo had previously cavorted around in a lampshade in the manner of a Ziegfeld girl in both the unaired pilot and “The Audition” (S1;E6).

Ziegfeld Follies includes a sketch for Red Skelton called “When Television Comes” aka “Guzzler’s Gin” in which a (future) television spokesman gets increasingly sloshed on his product. This sketch was an obvious influence on Lucy’s Vitameatavegamin routine in “Lucy Does a TV Commercial” (ILL S1;E30) aired on May 5, 1952.

Porky, a voice on the telephone in “Number Please” Peter Lawford, played “Password” against Lucille Ball on September 24, 1964.  At the time, Lawford was married to President Kennedy’s sister, Patricia. On November 26, 1968, Ball was a guest on “The Tonight Show” when Peter Lawford was sitting in for Johnny Carson.

Chorus Boy Bert May appeared as a solo dancer on “The Lucy Show” in “Lucy and Tennessee Ernie Ford” (TLS S5;E21) in February 1967.

In the dressing room, Lucy jokes with Fanny Brice, one of the funniest women in showbusiness.  This was the only time Ball and Brice collaborated and was Brice’s last film.
