a bellport mumu moodboard | christmas secret santa exchange; for beth ( luka & garnet )
Luka had never been quite sure if he liked Christmas or not before. He held a feeling of ambivalence to the holiday--he liked seeing his little sister happy in recent years, but with his mother expecting more and more from him each year, the holidays seemed a bad reminder that he wasn’t enough. Not straight enough, and too close to death. Every holiday season brought on reminders that he was only getting older, and he needed to find a ‘good, Christian girl and settle down to make a family.’ The idea of a family didn’t startle him much, and truth be told, he wondered if he’d like Christmas more with a son or daughter by his side. But marriage, especially to a woman… It soured the holiday.
His first Christmas with Gar, however, stolen in the wee hours of the night with a few minor lies, proved to him that Christmas could be pretty good.
Hours later, Luka found himself beyond tired--he’d yawned about five times in the past twenty minutes, and no amount of coffee could save him. But he couldn’t go home. How could he go back to his cold bed back home when he knew the warmth of Gar’s hand in his? They were wandering down the empty streets, Christmas lights dancing along the sides still. Fresh snow clung to the streets, their pathway clear to anyone who wanted to follow. Not that anyone was.
Their words were hushed as they continued down the empty streets, eventually making their way up a slight hill. They’d gone there before to look down at the town and sip at coffee, but with the blanket of snow on the ground, it looked magical. Romantic. He leaned against Gar as they looked down at the town, moving to fix the beanie he’d gotten him on his head, stealing a few glances to admire how beautiful his boyfriend was. How nice it was to feel this warm and excited on Christmas.
When he was dropped off at his home maybe an hour after, he stole a long kiss from his boyfriend’s lips. “First of many Christmasses, right?” he teased gently, flushed red from the cold and his own nerves.

four christmases caunus & niobe spent apart    ( + two they spent together )
for @tangodancerxmumu
one.
A business trip through Christmas wasn’t ideal, but when his father had offered a Caunus a spot at his side, the boy had jumped at the chance. He hadn’t been looking forward to the holiday; Danny was sure to pick a fight with him, Niobe sure to toe the line, and only one of those things was sure to be fun to watch. Serious and studious, Caunus was already a businessman in miniature at only sixteen. The trip was a reward for his good behaviour and the box he’d so ruthlessly fit himself into and a reprieve from what awaited him back in England.
Still, as he sat at the back of the boardroom listening to various voices drone on, Caunus couldn’t help but let his mind wander back to home and his siblings.
two.
The stacks of paperwork seemed to have no end; as one grew short, another waited. There was no time for a break and certainly no time for Christmas. It was fine; it had never been his favourite holiday and part of him doubted they would notice his absence, really. The sun was long set when Caunus called for takeout, pouring himself a drink and allowing himself a breath for the first time all day. Picking up his cell phone, he dialed home.
They all sounded happy and lively, his mother and Pyramis doing most of the talking. His father chimed in a couple times and Niobe only once at their mother’s prompting. They hung up quickly and the silence of Caunus’s apartment was suddenly crushing as he turned back to his cold food and the work that would surely take him through to the sunrise.
three.
After Niobe ran off with Corban, their mother had scrambled to put together any semblance of a Christmas for what was left of the family. Getting used to Danny’s empty place at the table had been one thing, no matter what else he had been feeling, there had always been relief mixed in. Still, seeing Niobe’s empty chair last Christmas had been different entirely. The whole thing had been subdued; he hadn’t been able to stop sneaking glances toward the place she’d usually sit.
This year, the tradition was to continue, maybe a little bit more normally than last year. Maybe they’d have an update on her, something more meaningful than whatever drivel he’d seen in the tabloids he’d scanned whenever he saw her name. They hadn’t spoken since she’d left; Caunus had written and deleted a dozen texts at least but hadn’t heard from his sister once either. He wouldn’t bother her if she didn’t want to talk to him.
Wrapping present was always slow as he strove for perfection, all crisp lines and sharp corners. The drone of the TV helped pass the time; the sports channel was certain not to draw his attention too much as distract from the task at hand. Hearing her name out loud jerked his attention away from the last gift and suddenly there she was, face in full concentration on the screen as the slow-mo replay of her most recent goal rolled in screen. He watched in awe, eyes fixed on the screen even after they had moved on to the next story.
Once the last gift was finished and piled with the others in the small box he was hauling to his parents’ house, Caunus pulled out his phone. A quick google search told him the date of Niobe’s next game and he quickly entered it into his calendar to remind himself before shoving the phone back in his pocket and all thoughts of soccer and sisters out of his mind.
four.
The dinner, if it could be called that, had been quiet and tense, food ordered from some restaurant. It may have been Christmas, but it was hard to celebrate when one’s sister was possessed by a demon. The bad news had come hard and fast, one thing after another after another, starting with Corban and ending with this. Their parents had some plan or another; they had disappeared into his father’s study once their plates were cleared to talk in quiet, leaving Caunus alone with an abnormally quiet Pyramis.
It had been too strange to handle and Caunus had excuse himself quickly, sneaking away to a bathroom, cracking a window, and pulling out a cigarette from his pocket. He flicked the lighter once, twice, three times before it stayed lit long enough to catch the cigarette. It didn’t settle him; just made him think of Niobe and how she’d never known they had this in common. He stubbed it out, flicked it into the toilet and looked up at the night sky instead, stars and moon splashed across a cloudless sky.
Where was Niobe tonight? Was she somewhere under the same stars, staring up at the moon? Or could she see nothing at all? The thought was no better than the cigarette; he swung the window shut with a gentle bang and spared only one glance at the tired face in the mirror before he walked out, leaving smoke and regrets lingering behind him.
+ one.
The children’s table was restless after dessert, but Caunus sat still, eyes wide and fixed on the bodies packed into the room. He couldn’t remember the name his father had told him of their host, but the room was packed with faces both strange and familiar. His mother had brought the three of them over to the other children herself, had tasked Caunus with keeping an eye on Niobe before making her way to her own seat. He was twelve, almost a teenager and more than old enough to sit with the adults, but he could deal with it for Niobe.
He could see his mother now across the room, little Pyramis in her arms as she stood by their father’s side. Niobe, sat beside him, looked uncomfortable in the little dress their mother had picked out, but he could see her scanning the room just like him, some gears whirling in her brain and cooking up something. She was the first one to stand up and the others followed like little dominoes falling, Danny too.
When they charged off, he had no choice but to follow, keeping watch of his sister as the children began to play. Off to the side he waited, eyes flickering back and forth from his siblings to his parents. He was torn, half wanting to join in the fun, half wanting to be a grown up—or grown up enough to draw his parents attention. He was still undecided when his father came to collect them, patting Caunus on the shoulder before scooping Niobe up to leave.
+ two.
He didn’t see her leave the room. Their family Christmas was a little more packed now than it had been in previous years; there were enough bodies in the room now that one missing wasn’t immediately noticeable. Still, the moment he’d looked up and realized Niobe was nowhere to be seen, Caunus excused himself from the conversation and slipped out one of the doors, disappearing just as easily as his sister had. The first room he’d checked was empty, so too was the second. His third and final stop in the house was to get his coat.
The night was silent and still, snow drifting down slowly and melting on the ground, and there she was, sitting on the still dry steps. The smoke from her cigarette curled up into the cold winter air, tendrils of grey fading into the black and white. He sat wordlessly beside her and pulled the box from his pocket. She looked up then, mute surprise morphing into something that in the low light of the moon and the distant streetlight almost looked like a smile.
Lighter held out, she welcomed him. Holding it into the flame, he lit his own cigarette. How long they say there without making a sound, Caunus wasn’t sure. It was a comfortable silence, a far cry from the chasm that had once laid between them. Alone on the steps with his sister and a pair of cigarettes was the most peace he’d felt that night. Never in his life had he been the life of the party, certainly not with their family, but it had been years now since he’d felt alone in that.
Stubbing out the butt, he looked first up at the stars, then down at his hands, the ring glistening in the low light as he twisted it around his finger. Finally, he looked at Niobe, lighting up another cigarette and holding her lighter out to him once more. The party and the people surely missing them inside now could wait a bit longer.
“Merry Christmas, Niobe.”

His jaw dropped briefly at her words. He never meant to offend her, and for a moment, he felt terrible about it. First, he’d just acted like a dick at the gala, and now this. He really was sinking deeper a little more every time. “Right, I’m sorry.” Alvaro apologized just a couple of seconds later. “I just thought this might not really be… your scene.” And there really was nothing wrong with that, parties and crowded places weren’t for everyone, and if it wasn’t for work, he doubted it’d be his style either. His eyes glanced down at his own attire for a moment at her next comment, a small smile hinted on his lips. “Right, we do. But I think green suits you better than me.”

Adira shouldn’t have pushed it once he apologized, but part of her liked watching him squirm. It wasn’t a reaction she got often. “You think a twenty-five year old doesn’t enjoy an occasional party?” she teased, her tone dry again before a brighter smile stretched across her lips. “Sorry,” she muttered, shaking her head and taking a step closer. “You’re right; it’s not quite my scene. But sometimes it’s fun to step out of the box, and I haven’t really gone out on Halloween before.” Her smile didn’t falter as he complimented her, a slight blush growing on her cheeks. She happened to think he looked particularly good in the green he was in, but she wasn’t sure if she could say something that bold out loud. “Hey,” she started, her smile dropping slightly. “Do you have a second to talk? I promise, you can get back to telling me how good I look in green in a second. I just want to clear things up.” She was just buzzed enough to be a little more open, which was good.

“I have and continue to face hardships in this industry but it has always fueled me, never stopped me. Me being a half Asian and half African-American woman can stump people; I’ve gotten feedback like ’we love her, but she’s not Black enough’ or ‘she’s too pretty to be in a funny role like this one.’ I’m extremely honored to be able to represent minorities and be a force for our young people.”

Ever since the Charity Gala earlier in the fall, Rissa had been keeping her head low. The fact that she’d gotten so drunk was a mistake, and she was lucky she’d found a man to leave with before chaos had ensued. She could have been taken again. The drugs she’d been taking to stop her visions had to be tucked away, and she spent her days trying to wrack her mind for visions of hunters, despite not being able to control her own visions. Her dance studio kept her busy, and in general, she tried not to let herself be alone for too long.
Her usual bright-smiled facade was put to the side as she wandered out of her studio, forehead still slick with sweat, to get a drink. The sun had already set, but still, she could walk. She wasn’t trying to watch the people around her, but as the streetlight hit the face of the man walking past her, she felt her heart stop. “Akira?” her voice was breathless, and she turned, reaching for his shoulder. “Kira, is that you?”

The afterlife was a pretty dull affair, if Ken was being honest with themselves. An eternity to wander the earth, and they had to die off the coast of Maine. If they had a chance to do it over, they’d have picked a better location. Maybe Greece, so they could live out an eternal Mamma Mia fantasy. Or New York, just for the constant entertainment. Instead, they were stuck in the sleepy hometown they’d been so desperate to move past, avoiding their best friend and family... Really, they took any chance they could to enjoy themselves. So when they noticed the lone girl in the coffee shop, they worked their way over and, when she turned her head, moved her drink just slightly to the side. They smirked slightly, leaning in close to watch their reaction.
“--Oh, I can go all day with this shit.”

Ken knew better than to do this. Ever since their death, they’d learned that it was best not to spend their eternity checking up on the living. It bred a sort of bitterness within them. Their parents, at least, had made things easier on them in their older age. Ollie was the issue, now. It was hard not to spend their time looming around the little diner they’d used to love and watch their baby brother. Baby brother, he was older than them by now, and watching his face, Ken wondered if they’d have looked similar. They hung around mostly wherever Ollie was, despite how unhealthy it was, at least once a week. And, during this time, they’d learned more about cooking than they’d known when they were alive. As one of the line cooks flipped a burger, they winced, knowing no one could hear them.
“Ooh, that char is rough, man,” they muttered, looming close to the line cook before looking at their brother as if they could hear them. “Ols, come on, you’re better than this.”

[ jackson & maggie ] for @tangodancerxmumu
If there was one thing Jack hadn’t missed about nightclubs, it was the almost constant lineup for the bathroom. It had been too long since he’d been to Caden Abbott’s club and he’d missed it almost immeasurably, but when the seal was broken, his fate was sealed and so Jack found himself once again standing in line for the bathroom, bored and wishing someone would do something entertaining.  Finally he gave up and turned to the woman standing behind him. “Hi,  my name is Doug Dimmadome, owner of the Dimmsdale Dimmadome! I like your costume.”
Tumblr media
While the club she was at was small compared to the ones she liked in New York, Mags found that she was still able to have a good time. Drinks were a more reasonable price, too, which meant she was a little more drunk than she’d intended to be. The line for the bathroom wasn’t too long, which was a small blessing, but still, it felt awkward to be surrounded by strangers. She gently rocked on her heels, not bothered by the random stares her makeup brought on. “No shit,” she replies, her lips breaking out into a wild smile. “Oh, I love it. Did you put the hat together yourself?” She might have to steal this costume idea for a different party. “Thanks. I didn’t have time to put together a better outfit, but cartoon makeup is always a crowd pleaser.”

Now that Mags felt settled in this new, small town, she couldn’t help but wonder how she’d ever survived without Beckett nearby. He was the only family she had, and honestly, the city was so busy that she’d hardly realized how much she’d missed him. Now, all she wanted to do was spoil him with what little funds she had. Full grocery basket in tow, she knocked on the front door to the large house before her. She wished she had no idea why the Abbott family had taken such a shine to Beck. Knowing he was an old soul, knowing he used to be their brother... it didn’t sit right with her. Beck was his own person before he was any of his past lives, and they didn’t know him as well as they thought. She didn’t want him reduced down to some life he hadn’t known for centuries.
Her smile grew as he opened the door. “--So I know we didn’t decide on a soup, but,” she started, before pulling out the matzoh meal. “I kind of missed that little Jewish deli by my house. You remember, right? Best brisket and lox I’ve ever had.” It had been her little treat, going there when she had the money. Or the soup when she was sick. “You up for matzo ball soup?”
