#my art #pokemon #pokemon scarlet and violet #quaquaval #i really wanna write my thoughts on this game but there’s so much discourse ;/ #it’s such a fun game and I love most of the new pokemon and characters #especially compared to swsh in both regards #but some of the flaws are pretty goddamn hard to overlook specially considering how much $ the pokemon IP rakes in #that being said I am having an absolute blast with it #I’m doing an all new birds run #and plan to do another run afterwards where I use some of my other new faves like mabosstiff and houndstone

Hot take: Nemona isn't just well written, I'd go as far as to say she's the best Companion in the entire series.

Companion characters have for a long time suffered from the fact that they're all cookie cutter characters. They're either creepily nice, are trying to hard to overtake you in spite of the fact that the games are extremely easy, and they bother you with the same dialogue every route and city.

Sometimes you get interesting plays on those characters, like the nervous but determined Wally, or the non-combatant but actual protagonist Lillie, but they still often carry the issue of talking way too much and never actually saying anything. They have personality, but they don't have Personality.

Nemona has tons of Personality. She's a fucking weird girl who just likes to fight because it's fun, but she's at the top so nobody can really challenge her and everyone's too afraid to actually battle her at all.

So her interactions with Juliana are like "Please like battling as much as I do. Please reach the Champion rank, I'm so lonely!" Nemona's story is sad, indeed, but she's not angsty about it. Not around Juliana at least. She gets to see a side that, according to Geeta, nobody's ever seen before.

And you know what? She's great! She's genuinely fun, she's awkward and weird, and she's not overdoing like Hop was in the last game. It's at a point that when meme'd on lines like this happen

I believe her. I don't think she's following the player, I believe this was a genuine coincidence because that body language scream "Oh fuck, this is going to look weird, this was actually an accident, please don't jump to conclusions!"

What I find makes her more interesting is that she does the same boundary pushing things other rivals do, but she's always really apologetic about it almost immediately afterward. That line about how "You'll have all the battles you'll ever need... with me!" is one that is almost immediately walked back.

That's the point where you're like "Oh okay, you just have like no social skills." She always apologizes when she oversteps, and about halfway through Victory Road it stops being necessary because her excitement is something I like about her.

I like her, she's fun. And her story is pretty grounded. She's not got a missing dead robot mom and dying dog, she's just got hands off parents and alienated people with her battle fever. The fact that she's a high energy character makes her way more interesting than Arven, who is way less interesting because he's such a moody asshole.

Nemona also doesn't overstay her welcome. You only battle her five times, and you don't encounter her at every gym, so this idea that she's following you around is complete nonsense.

The way she'd written is very charming. It's the good mix of chaos and exuberance that Pokemon has been sorely lacking. The friendly rivals have always been really upbeat and cheerful with no texture to them, and the rest of them are just moody all the time. Nemona actually got me choked up.

Working on the big Pokemon video I ended up really tearing a lot of the rivals to shreds, but I loved every second Nemona was on screen. I'd go as far as to say she carries the entire game. The rest of the game is just the usual boring Game Freak writing (and Starfall Street has way too much dialogue holy shit) but Nemona was such a breath of fresh air.

Look I hate Nintendo as much as the next guy but the (maybe) oncoming legal action against Palworld kinda has some merit. There's a lot of original designs in the game, but there's also lots that very blatantly use parts of the models that are used in modern Pokemon games, and allegedly there's also some designs that are just fanart taken without permission.

Like from what I've seen the people deep in the discourse trenches are using both the "The designs are NOTHING alike!" and the "It's a parody, it's SUPPOSED to be a rip-off!" arguments interchangeably and it's like- No. No, you can't use both of those at once, they're paradoxical.

Either you believe Palworld is just another mon game, and just like every other mon game, there's some design elements that are inevitably going to repeat, in which case we'll have to wait and see what happens, or you agree that Palworld is plagiarizing and you're okay with it, in which case you can't really complain when a lawsuit hits.
