🤰🏽Did you know that pregnancy-related mortality is actually higher for women of color? I didn’t. It is so important we share our knowledge, experiences and concerns with each other - and our maternity caregivers. Don’t be afraid to speak up. We can save each other 🙏❤️ 📸 @camillemuzik Words by @glowmaven #Repost ・・・ Black women are an endangered species. According to the CDC, black mothers in the U.S. die at three to four times the rate of white mothers, one of the widest of all racial disparities in women's health. That’s 243% more likely to die from pregnancy- or childbirth-related causes. How is it possible in a developed nation that we see this extreme disparity in birth outcomes for black women? _ Higher pregnancy-related mortality among Black women from preeclampsia, eclampsia, abruptio placentae, placenta previa, and postpartum hemorrhage is largely attributable to higher case-fatality rates. Some causes that we don’t have data for include systemic racism, higher stress toll that contributes to a plethora of possible issues and lack of consistent care. Many black women experience a sense of discomfort with their medical practitioners, they don’t feel seen and heard and many times our health issues go unnoticed because there isn’t a diligent and integrative approach to our care. We need more birth workers of color to support black and brown women in childbirth. When people see these numbers, they think - this is affecting poor/low income women. But statistically speaking, upwardly mobile black women are also at risk. @SerenaWilliams shares in a recent @Vogue interview that she nearly died after her daughter’s emergency C-section. Serena is someone who has a wealth of resources, access to the best doctors and still found herself in a precarious health crisis where she had blood clots in her lungs. Because she was familiar with her body she knew to ask for a scan and the proper medication to request, but Erica Garner, was not so lucky. Catch this repost on her post @glowmaven -🙌 . . . #hypegirls #femininehealth #givingbirth #preeclampsia #csection #naturalbirth #motherhood #pregnancy #blackmoms #postpartum

So happy to see @gilliana Actor, Activist and Mama of 3 baring it all for @peta in here in NYC. But we think her beautiful words should be up there too 💕❤️ #Repost @gilliana ・・・ This is me. Naked. See that scar? Three children came out of there. And that “P”? That’s for Piper, my eldest—a tattoo to cover another scar from an ectopic pregnancy. That’s part of the story written on my body. Had the lens been wider, you’d have seen a scar from the time I kneeled on a shard of glass during a production of A Streetcar Named Desire in London. And if I’d turned sideways, you’d have been able to see lots and lots of cellulite and a mole in the shape of a continent. This is my body. It’s mine to do with as I please. And today, I’m using it to stand up for animals and their right to exist as they please—with their skin still attached, naturally. My nakedness also makes a bigger statement. As an actor who is usually unusually modest, suddenly I find myself concerned that modern feminism has too many people confusing sexy with sexist. It’s easy to forget that, in the annals of activism, there is a history of women protesting naked, which has had little to do with being directly sexy and is ultimately about freedom of expression. Remember Lady Godiva, who rode nude to protest for peasants? And more recently, Cambridge economist Victoria Bateman appeared topless with “Brexit Leaves Britain Naked” written across her torso. I’m not that brave. But I am in favor of doing whatever the fuck we want with our bodies to make a statement that is important to us. This is my body. If I were clothed, would you be reading this? . . . #hypegirls #selflove #postpartum #motherhood #momblogger #gilliananderson #maternity #activism #vegan #animalrights #femininehealth #loveyourself #momboss #bodypostive #nyc #peta

🙌Mamas, whether you choose to accept it or not, Cannabis is one of the most powerful healing medicines for pregnant, laboring and postpartum women! Thank you @treefemmecollective for sharing your words and spreading the knowledge ❤️🙏 #repost via @treefemmecollective ・・ "Many cultures around the globe used cannabis as a women’s aid during labor and pregnancy. Today, cannabis consumption during pregnancy remains one of the most controversial aspects of cannabis research and regulation. However, cannabis was viewed as one of the most powerful women’s medicines to help women throughout the childbirth process and for postpartum depression. AsJournalist Joe Dolce mentions in his book, Brave New Weed, women ate cannabis flowers to ease pregnancy pains during the neolithic era. Historical and archeological evidence also suggests that cannabis was used to facilitate labor and childbirth in ancient China, Egypt, India, and Arabic nations." (source: herb.co) Many mamas are concerned about inhaling the toxins in smoke but Cannabis treatments include inhaled vapors, teas, culinary concoctions, and topical applications - some of which are purely healing and have no psychoactive effects at all. Pharmaceuticals often have many risks for our bodies and minds and even sometimes can result in fetal injury. I encourage considering a natural option to support the depression, anxiety, and stress that undoubtedly comes along with mamahood if this is something that is of concern. Any person who has spent time working with children for long periods of time understands that our children need us to be present. When we are not is when things fall apart. I've found that CBD helps bring me back to a place of presence and in turn I'm able to melt some of the everyday stress we all face. It helps us remain calm in the moments when our children are throwing tantrums, are teething, crying over spilled milk, or just won't sleep - when our natural human response at times is frustration or anger. That said, like anything else, there is a fine line and balance between safety and abuse. Knowing your body and knowing your medicine is your responsibility. #hypegirls #cannamama #femininehealth

Aren’t we freaking amazing mamas? Good morning 🙏 #Repost @lilylohm ・・・ Inspired by @carleebyoga 🙌🏻 If my reaction or intention behind something, a picture or way of doing something is pure and loving, and someone has a different judgemental reaction it has absolutely nothing to do with me and everything to do with their own issues.
