my 8 year old has some emotional regulation difficulties, and I've done my best to help him with those.

unrelated, I gave him a shovel a couple of days ago and told him to go have fun in the field because I was tired.

He suddenly seemed happier, having less trouble breathing through disappointment and just being generally all around more cheerful and able to focus in school better. Sure, my partner had to pull him out of a six foot by three foot hole today, but he was stoked about it!

Duolingo Sucks, Now What?: A Guide

Now that the quality of Duolingo has fallen (even more) due to AI and people are more willing to make the jump here are just some alternative apps and what languages they have:

"I just want an identical experience to DL"

Busuu (Languages: Spanish, Japanese, French, English, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Korean)

"I want a good audio-based app"

Language Transfer (Languages: French, Swahili, Italian, Greek, German, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, English for Spanish Speakers)

"I want a good audio-based app and money's no object"

Pimsleur (Literally so many languages)

Glossika (Also a lot of languages, but minority languages are free)

*anecdote: I borrowed my brother's Japanese Pimsleur CD as a kid and I still remember how to say the weather is nice over a decade later. You can find the CDs at libraries and "other" places I'm sure.

Mango (Languages: So many and all endangered/Indigenous courses are free even if you don't have a library that has a partnership with Mango)

"I want SRS flashcards and have an android"

AnkiDroid: (Theoretically all languages, pre-made decks can be found easily)

AnkiApp: It's almost as good as AnkiDroid and free compared to the official Anki app for iphone

"I don't mind ads and just want to learn Korean"

I was thinking about Lucy today and how freaking happy I am that she found a place for herself at the cafe after everything that went down. She is able to create another space for her outside her ability, and i just love this for her. She has friends. She has people who genuinely care about her, and she can just work and be a person. She deserves so much more, and idk i'm just so soft about her right now

Just had to edit to add that I also love how she now opens her safe space to keep others safe too.

Last Song: Ode to Harrison - Michael Giacchino. I've been on a throwback season lately, so I've been revisiting music that once made me feel something or somehow spoke to me. That piece from Star Trek: Into Darkness really did so back then, even before the movie was released, because it was such an overwhelmingly accurate portrait of that character that when I saw him on-screen I was in awe at how precise it was, emotionally-musically speaking XDDD

Favorite Color: Pink, black, purple, apparently red and burgundy, wine… Red variations. I also like blue, but not as much as I used to 😅 I do realize I've a lot of black, red, grey, burgundy, fucsia clothes now 🤔

Last Movie/TV Show: I was in a telenovela mood since July last year…? I'm currently not watching much TV on my own, but I've been rewatching Frasier and watching Zorro, from 1957 with mum.

Sweet/Spicy/Savory: Same as Kuro. It also depends on my mood, though, but I should say I tend to favor acid/sour flavors 😅

Relationship Status: In a love-hate relationship with my work and myself. I'm too high maintenance XDDD

Last Thing I Googled: “why do I feel like crying whenever I sing” XDDD It's something that bothers me greatly XDDD I’ve my own hypothesis about it, but I can't find anything that backs it up because they always bring up this “emotional connection” idea that doesn't completely satisfy me because it feels different, so… Yeah.

Current Obsession: Fandom-wise? I dunno if it's an obsession (it most certainly isn't as strong as my “obsessions” used to be), but I've been reading lots of BL and GL mangas…? Harusono Shou is one of my favorite authors since 2020. She has an amazing way of putting so much emotion in her work and it makes me feel so happy. I admire her a lot 🥺✨

Last Book: Abrazado a las estrellas, a compilation of Nakahara Chuuya’s poems translated into Spanish. Such a great book 🥺✨

Looking Forward To: Finishing this project I've been working on because it's kinda exhausting 🙃 Also to Saturday, because they said it was gonna rain and I certainly hope it does 🥲
