Everyone said you were the couple. The couple that would make it and last forever. Funny thing is, it doesn’t always work out like that.
For the longest time you imagined what the sky looked like. You’ve heard stories about how it’s the prettiest blue you could dream of, how you can feel the sunshine on your skin. You’ve tried so many times to feel it. But the little bit that shines through the cracks isn’t enough. You promised yourself that one day you would get to experience it. You just didn’t know that day would come so soon.
You were on a mission, same as the others before, to steal the boxes of food. You got the boxes and got out, this time though, you were followed. This was a trap and it was too late for you to back out. All you could do was try to escape. However, before you could even fully think of an escape plan, you were on the ground with your arms held down across your back and someone else’s legs on either side of you. You manage to kick the person off of you and roll over. As soon as you try to get up and run, someone else is on top of you and slams your shoulders back to the ground. For a second, the man just looks at you.
When Levi first saw you, he felt a warmth in his chest. It was a feeling he never felt before but something he had heard about from others. To be honest, it scared him; it scared the absolute fuck out of him. He couldn’t let himself feel that. He couldn’t be in love. Now he knew one thing, and that was that he absolutely had to avoid you.
Meanwhile, when you saw Levi for the first time, you felt butterflies in your stomach. Of course you knew who he was: he was Captain Levi Ackerman. The one who made it out. Your friends had only told you how scary he was a million times. Now, looking at him for yourself, though, you didn’t think he was all that scary. Yes, he seemed intense, but also there was something soft about him that you could feel, even with your shoulders pinned and a death glare beaming at you. From that moment you knew, you wanted him.
“Please, let’s make this easy. I’d rather not be down in the mud with the filth.”
“Oh, come on, this is your home. You’re a part of the filth, Captain.”
Levi tisked and rolled his eyes.
“I was only born here, this was never my home.”
Before you get the chance to reply, a blond man kneels beside your face.
“You remind me of someone else I once caught down here. Perhaps I should offer you the same opportunity.”
“What makes you think that I would want such an offer?”
"Your eyes long for freedom, I've seen it before."
"You know nothing about me"
Levi speaks up, “This is taking way too long, you either come with us or be sentenced to death, and truthfully that would be a waste when we constantly need new recruits.”
“Alright, I'll come, but for my own reasons. The idea of death doesn't scare me anymore."
Levi moves to the side and Erwin pulls you up. Immediately you’re in handcuffs.
“I agreed to come! What is this?”
“It’s just a precaution, we’ll remove them when we feel as though we can trust you.”
You don’t say anything, you just grind your teeth and scowl.
Soon you’re topside and being dropped off at a training camp. The first few days are rough and you yell back at the Commandant, landing yourself in more trouble. However, before you even realize it though you’ve made friends with some of the younger cadets. One of them, Sasha, seems to get into as much trouble as you. She’s always stealing food and never learns her lesson. Then there is Eren, he’s a hot head and always fighting with Jean, who always says things to make Eren angry. Eren’ s friends, Mikasa and Armin, try to stop him but most times they are unsuccessful.
Levi comes by every few days and watches over the training. Evidently, he had never done that, because the other cadets said he rarely came by until you arrived. The next time Levi arrives he doesn’t leave. You hear from a few of the cadets that Levi will be staying for the next few weeks until graduation and will be overseeing all of the training. You take this as your chance to try to have a conversation with him. The next time you’re training, as you’re putting on your gear, you find your way to Levi.
“Captain, can I ask you a few questions?”
“What is it cadet?”
“Well, I was just wondering, why did you choose to leave the underground?”
“I don’t have time for this.”
“Wait! Fine, I’ll ask something else.”
“Hurry it up.”
“Why did you start supervising training after dropping me off? Do you just want to watch me? Huh?” You ask flirtatiously.
Levi turns his face.
“You’re very bold. It has nothing to do with you.” He begins to walk away. “Commandant Shadis asked me to oversee some of the training since I already happened to be around.”
You and Levi had a few interactions after that day, but then his appearances became less and less. He even stopped training. You’d try to say hello and wave when the chance came, but he never returned the interactions. Did you do something wrong? Did you say something that offended him? Maybe you should try to apologize just in case.
You first tried to learn Levi’s routine, but it seemed like as soon as you did, things would change. You tried to catch him in his office when he would make tea. You managed it once, but then he rushed out mumbling something about important plans and that he was busy. You didn’t even have a chance to give him the tea sampler that you spent way too much money buying from one of the street merchants. Not to mention you only had the opportunity to buy it because you and the other cadets snuck out of training one day, and of course you got a huge punishment for it. All of that and you don’t even get to hand deliver it, oh well. You place the sampler on his desk, deciding that you’d come back the next day and explain it was from you and to see if you had done something wrong.
The next day, you make your way to Levi’s office only to find the door locked and the lights off. You check the time again because this can’t be right. He always makes tea at this time. He has for 2 weeks! Even then, you decide to just shrug it off, maybe something important came up.
It’s a few days later and you’re back on the training field. It just so happens that Levi is in charge today. Everyone is in their ODM gear and slicing the necks of the fake titans. You are struggling, to say the least. You wanted to do your best in front of Levi, but you messed up from the start and that instantly put you in a bad mood. You tried again, and again. You ended up getting a few, but nothing compared to what you knew you could actually do.
It then came time for solos. This meant Levi would be watching you, and only you. If you fuck this up, it won’t look good on your future as a scout, nor will it show Levi how much you’ve improved while he’s been absent. You began and got the first two exactly how you wanted, but then one of the anchors from your ODM gear didn’t hook into the tree and you fell. Luckily, you’re a calm and quick thinker in these situations. You launch it again, and this time it holds. You go to slice the third titan, but you don’t cut deep enough and also end up dulling your blades. You feel your face heating up. After landing on the ground, you throw your ODM gear down. You curse and kick at the ground. How could you fuck that up after you saved yourself; it would have been perfect!
Levi walks over to you and stands in front of you.
“This is not how my scouts act. Go cool off and when you come back, we can talk about your performance.”
You feel your body go numb and you realize that you’ve just had a temper tantrum in front of him.
“I-I’m so sorry captain, I didn’t mean to act like that, I just-“
“I said go.” Levi says in a tone you’ve not quite heard before.
You realize how much you’ve fucked up. You grab your gear and walk back to your place. You put your gear down and walk to the bathroom. You walk in front of the mirror and just stare at yourself.
“I can’t believe I’ve just done that. What is wrong with me? Of course he avoids me, he probably hates me. He must think I act like a child.”
You rub your hand over your face and walk to the shower. You turn the water on and adjust the temperature to lukewarm. As soon as you get in the water it feels amazing on your tired muscles. You could fall asleep right here, right now, but you know you still have to talk to the captain. You’re not really looking forward to that. What are you even going to say? How do you explain you didn’t want to mess up in front of him?
“Oh yeah, hey captain, sorry I acted like that. I just didn’t want to make myself look like an idiot in front of you and I did exactly that. Oh, why didn’t I want to make myself look like an idiot in front of you? Oh uh. Well I’m in love with you.”
Wait, what was that? It’s only a little crush, right? You didn’t just admit you were in love with the captain? No. You couldn’t have? Except, you did. You’ve known, you could just never bring yourself to admit it. Not when all you ever hear is that the captain has never loved anyone and probably never will. It can’t be true that he has never loved anyone, right?
You finish washing yourself and get out of the shower. You walk to your room, grab some clean clothes, and put them on. You notice the sun is already starting to go down. Did you spend that much time talking to yourself in the shower? Doesn’t matter, you just need to hurry up and find the captain.
You go to where you were training and everyone is already gone. They must have finished up early. You go to check the mess hall. You see Sasha, Connie, Jean, everyone. Except for Levi. You walk over to the rest of the group.
“Hey guys, where is the captain?”
“Ooh y/n is in trouble! Did you guys see the face the captain had when y/n had their meltdown?”, Sasha teased.
“Sasha, don’t say that, I’m sure y/n is nervous enough.” Mikasa spoke softly. ”I think I saw him talking to Eren in his office before we came in here.”
“Okay, thanks guys. Wish me luck.”
“Goodluck.” they all say.
You begin your walk to his office and you already feel like your heart is going to beat right out of your chest. You’re usually never this nervous around him. Is this because you admitted that you love him? How can you love someone that you’ve only had a few conversations with? Is that possible?
You find yourself in front of his office door and just stand there, stiff. You manage to raise your arm and knock ever so lightly on the door.
“Come in,” Levi says.
You take a deep breath, open the door, and walk in.
“Close the door behind you.”
“Yes, Captain.”
You close the door and walk over to the Captains desk and salute.
“Relax, and take a seat.”
You sit in the chair Levi motioned to and wipe your palms on your pants. Only silence. You wish he’d just get it over with and give you your punishment already. You sit there for a few more seconds before you speak up.
“So you wanted to see me to speak about what happened earlier?”
“Yes.” He pauses and takes a deep breath. “What in the hell was that? That’s not the proper attitude to have and you know that.”
“I-I know Sir, I’ve just been having a bad day and I was trying to make sure I performed well in spite of that, but I did just the opposite.”
“Do you think a Titan is going to care if you had a bad day? Do you think a Titan is going to stand there and let you have your little temper tantrum like a child that doesn’t get the toy they want? No, they will just eat you. Do you want to die?”
“No, I don’t want to die. I wouldn’t act like that outside the walls.”
“You should be treating training the same as if you were outside of the walls.”
“I know, I’m sorry. I’ll do better”
“I know you’ll do better because if not, you’ll be kicked out of the Scout Regiment before you even get in. This is your only warning, get it together.”
“Yes Sir, I will, I’m sorry again.”
“I’m sure. You can go now.”
“Uhm, Captain, one more thing, if I may ask?”
“What is it?”
“Have I done something wrong? Other than today? It just seems like you’re trying to avoid me. I brought a tea sampler by a few days ago. I was going to give it to you and apologize for whatever I’ve done, but I didn’t get the chance.”
“That was from you? Well, thank you. To answer your question, no, it’s nothing you have done, I just like to keep my distance from most people.”
“But I see you with Eren and the rest of my friends all of the time? You speak to them when they tell you hello throughout the day. I say hello and it’s like you run in the opposite direction.”
“Well, I’m sorry it seems that way to you, I’ll do better at telling you hello. Now, if you don’t mind I have some things to get done. Please close the door on your way out.”
“But- fine. Whatever.”
You feel your face heating up as you walk out and you slam the door behind you. The slam of the door brings you out of your cloud of anger and you realize you just slammed the door on the Captain after catching an attitude. For a second you consider apologizing but you just leave it for another time. You walk back to your house and think over everything that just happened. He was definitely lying to you and he was acting weird.
You make it to your house and put on your favorite pair of pajamas. You make some hot chocolate and grab your favorite book. No matter how hard you try you can’t focus on your book so you decide to just go to bed. You try your hardest to relax and let the day go and fall asleep, but you just can’t. There’s only one thing on your mind.
“What is he hiding? And why is he lying to me?”
