chekhov's gun! states that if the narrator mentions a gun (or some other object, such as a bracelet), it should be used in the story!
or according to wikipedia (i know, i know, bad source and such...)
"a narrative principle that states that every element in a story must be necessary, and irrelevant elements should be removed."
Pro-writing tip: if your story doesn't need a number, don't put a fucking number in it.
Nothing, I mean nothing, activates reader pedantry like a number.
I have seen it a thousand times in writing workshops. People just can't resist nitpicking a number. For example, "This scifi story takes place 200 years in the future and they have faster than light travel because it's plot convenient," will immediately drag every armchair scientist out of the woodwork to say why there's no way that technology would exist in only 200 years.
Dates, ages, math, spans of time, I don't know what it is but the second a specific number shows up, your reader is thinking, and they're thinking critically but it's about whether that information is correct. They are now doing the math and have gone off drawing conclusions and getting distracted from your story or worse, putting it down entirely because umm, that sword could not have existed in that Medieval year, or this character couldn't be this old because it means they were an infant when this other story event happened that they're supposed to know about, or these two events now overlap in the timeline, or... etc etc etc.
Unless you are 1000% certain that a specific number is adding to your narrative, and you know rock-solid, backwards and forwards that the information attached to that number is correct and consistent throughout the entire story, do yourself a favor, and don't bring that evil down upon your head.

The ethics of fanfiction book-binding and why no one should be making money from it
Recently on tiktok there has been a wave of content creators showcasing their fanfic bookbinding commissions they have been doing for what appears to be mostly for harry potter fandom* (I'm sure there are others, this particular fandom is just loud and content for them is all I see in regards to this aspect of fan culture). These videos usually include some of the process involved with book binding fanfic, general information about their personal preference with the craft , and almost always a disclaimer about not 'really' making a profit off these commissions. Which seems fine and dandy from a distance, but when the creators are looked at closely, they are making a profit (even if its a small one) and majority of the time the fics they are binding they are not the author of. They are selling fics they do not have the rights** to, when the author of that work will never see a dime of.
First and foremost this is a major problem, for a multitude of reasons really. The two most glaring is that these bookbinders don't own the fic they are binding for commissions, and because of how gray fanfiction still is in copyright law selling hard copies for fics is dangerous(illegal) and put every single person who enjoys (reader and writer, but especially the writer) fanfiction at risk. ie major fanfiction website shutdown, Anne Rice*** level lawsuits against fanfic writers, and so much more.
Fanfiction bookbinding at its core should only be for personal use, and or gift giving. And only if the book binder is the author, or has explicit permission from the author to do so. Which to give some credit many of the binders on tiktok have gotten, but a lot of them haven't. Or they don't disclose the true intentions of what they are doing. Like auctioning off these bound fics as a donation for fan artist or other creators within the fandom- when again the fic author will never see a dime of this transaction, even though it was their work, their time, effort, and skill being the sold item. That is a problem.
This post isn't being made to be rude or mean to fellow creatives in the fandom community, this is a post that comes from a place of concern. The moral of the story is that it is not ethical to sell, take commission for bound fics or mass distribute fanfiction is anyway for any reason. While having a hard copy of your favorite fic is nice, and books are pretty, the risks**** are not worth it.
*considering that jkr actively went after fanfic sites in the early 2000s and got some shut down seeing this fandom do things like this is concerning, while most of the fandom seems to be divorced from jkr she is still alive and still has the rights to harry potter and has shown she is willing take measures to protect her property.
**fics belong to the fic writer who wrote them, they are not community property and doing anything with a fic without the fic writers permission is unethical and wrong. fanfiction is shared with you, you do not own it.
***fanfic history 101, Anne Rice hated fanfiction so much that she went after fic writers and fanfiction sites with her full legal team no holds bar. she ruined several fans lives for her creative property, its why fics for her works weren't actively being published until after her death in 2021 - why so many of them are backdated, because until her death it was not safe to post fics for her works.
****risks - anything to do with copyright infringement from the original party who owns the media (why do you think most fanartist only sell fanart at cons and not on their store fronts), also if things get out of hand fic writers can and will just delete the work off the internet
(please don't reblog this with saying that some fic writers use patreon or other sites to take commission or do early access to new chapters so they can make money off their fics so book binders taking commissions is fair game, because that is not the majority of fic writers. The majority of fic writers will tell you that taking commission or making money off fanfic is wrong. Because while I'm sure a lot of us would like to be paid for our time and effort and skill, we don't want to risk it and ruin this for the entire community. Accepting money for anything to do with fanfiction is dangerous and is most cases illegal. )

fuck it, I'm romanticizing underrated ao3 works now. 8,000 word fics with only 13 kudos, even after 5 months. multi-chaptered works with only 11 comments from the same 3 people and the author themself. incredibly specific works featuring OC's mingling with canon characters that only get 5 kudos. rare-pair fics. gift works that are literally ONLY for the receiver.
