The Coffee Shop - A New Beginning with Winry Rainford
In a small town stationed along the sandy shores of the ocean was a girl in a coffee shop, awake far before any rational girl her age would be. Almost every day, she woke five minutes before her alarm clock that was set to 6:30AM and dressed herself accordingly, though her small town by the seaside had pretty predictable weather; grey, gloomy, with a side of ocean breeze that brought a subtle chill to the still air. That early fall morning in particular, she clothed herself in a simple white knitted sweater and a pair of blue jeans which seemed just enough to face the morning ahead of her.
With her shoulder bag in tow, the young girl, Winry, left her empty home in her wake and walked herself down the equally empty street until she reached the corner and made a left turn, following the path she’d memorized so well, she barely needed to lift her eyes from the sidewalk. She took said path regularly to a nearby coffee shop where she spent a considerable amount of her time. Not only was it in a convenient location, but it was open early and the atmosphere always proved calm and quiet. She was quite the regular at the café which wasn’t much of a surprise considering that not many people inhabited their little town by the water. Because she was well-known at the shop, they always had her order ready at the till and, on occasion, they would give it to her for free as a display of gratitude. After all, a cup of tea or coffee was worth her loyalty to their store.
When she entered the quaint coffee shop, she claimed the table in the corner of the room by setting her bag down on the table and fished her wallet out from one of the front pockets. It was a compact little thing, made of a faded beige canvas with only a few pockets on the inside and a spot to hold her license. Though it was small, it carried everything she needed (which wasn’t really much). After she closed her bag back up, she paced to the front counter where a large cup of something hot sat, drawing her closer. There was no one up front, and she learned that it meant today’s cup was on the house, but that never stopped her from leaving a tip as her own thank-you to the store and its employees for their generosity. From her wallet she drew a toonie and quietly dropped it into the tall glass tip jar that they had set down beside the register. The jar was empty other than her toonie, since they would have emptied the tips out from the day before already. If she didn’t know any better, though, she could’ve assumed that she was the only customer that ever tipped them. Once in a while, she’d come in to visit later on in the day and still find the tip jar empty, along with the rest of the shop. It was like no one else existed in her little town besides her and the café employees.
Finally, she approached her cup. It’d become natural for her to never expect anything in particular. A few months prior, Winry had told them that if they really did want to prepare her drink ahead of time (which she insisted they didn’t have to do) that they could surprise her with anything warm and she’d gladly drink what she was given. It brought a little spontaneity into each day, even if some days she was given a drink that she’d tried before. She loved going into the shop not knowing what to expect.
Today, it was a chai latte. Just from getting close, she could smell the delicate mix of sweetness and spice. It was one of her favourites but she tried to order it sparingly so that she would never fall out of love with it because never in a million years did she want to hate her favourite thing in the world. Well, not favourite thing in the world, but you get my drift.
Each step across the hardwood floor on her travel back to her table was loud in contrast to the silence of the café. If she hadn’t known any better, she could have easily assumed that the world had gone under and she was the lone survivor who spent her time drinking chai tea in an abandoned coffee shop. At her table, she sat herself down in the seat closest to the corner and stared out the shop window, wondering when some kind of change would find its way into her daily routine.

‘Comish - Wyrmwood’
Epic Scene Commission featuring a band of characters fending off a wicked dragon from the wood…
Yeeeeeeah, multi-character Epic Scene GO!  I was given these awesome characters, some backstory on the land, and info about the demonic creatures within, and this just…totally diabolical dragon immediately came to mind!  Composition-wise, I wanted to balance the characters, two flightless and two in-flight, and a outwardly-spiraling action line beginning from the center and expanding outward from the center.
I really wanted the dragon to appear as though he was possibly just part of the forest itself - one could have walked by him until the thorny vines began twisting with a mind all their own.  I matched him closely with those vines, that may or may not be reaching out to the characters in flight!
I lovingly dubbed him the ‘Voldemort dragon’ as I worked on this, haha.  And poor knight, down there!  Two mouths equals double the trouble, and he’s holding fast as the dragon sets the undergrowth alight!
