Ordeals

The idea of Ordeals are a staple in spiritual practice but not that many people talk about or refuse to acknowledge it in favour of a clean cut spirituality. The thing is - shit happens. You go through a dark night of the soul, you come out a changed person. You go through spiritual sickness, you come out a changed person. You get cursed, you deal with the curse and you come out a changed person. Most ordeals are initiatory in nature, focusing on deriving some spiritual truth from pain and discomfort. I recall many saints scourging the flesh by way of whipping themselves, exposing themselves to the elements and rigorous fasting as a way of obtaining spiritual truths. The temptations of Saint Anthony were an ordeal. So, they form a major part of a spiritual practice, a stepping stone. In the Qliphoth, there is an ordeal associated with every tunnel and sphere that lend themselves to a further realization of the magus's potential. I've had some very potent visions, dealt with bodily effects and so on and so forth.

The basic premise is - you don't get over stuff, you get through it. Not all ordeals are involuntary, however. Some are self-inflicted. Again, rigorous fasting, doing something that pushes one of their bubble for the sake of spiritual truth, scourging the flesh, deep meditations and so on and so forth.

Regardless of what it is - self inflicted or not - the ordeal is a part of spiritual practice. You're going to deal with some things, the same way that shadow work dredges up the parts of yourself that you refuse to acknowledge. Alchemy is another example of an ordeal. You are a prima materia that then needs to go through various processes (solve et coagula) to obtain the Lapis Philosophorum (the Philosopher's Stone).

The main basis of why I wrote this post was simple. If you start experiencing a dark night of the soul, a particular ordeal upon starting your spirituality, take it as an experience to learn. Spirituality is not as clean cut as many people think.

The Astral Vision

First off, Evocation. To evoke something is to bring it to a tangible or semi-tangible apperance. It would generally be visible in the medium such as in smoke, water, blood, fire, the mirror etc. Invocation is not necessarily the opposite of evocation but is a different mode of practice. In invocation, you are bringing something into yourself for various means including ritual-possession, channeling, alchemy, empowerment etc. Drawing Down the Moon, in a more modern sense, is an act of Invocation whereby the magus brings the Lunar Force into themselves.

Astral Vision plays a role in evocation where the magus does not use a medium outside of simple calling. Thus the astral senses are to be developed in order to clearly perceive the spirit summoned. Now, here are a few other things about spirit evocation.

The spirit often appears in forms from grimoires but can also appear differently depending. Most often, they take a form that the magus sees them as having but would still have a true form.

Certain spirits, groups or individuals, have specific preferences in summoning and behaviour. Some have specific directions they prefer, times of day or the year (days are generally more accessible but one can create a major ritual for those times of year that they rule over). Some spirits would straight up tell you what the fuck is up whereas others have a little more tact. I remember being slapped by a spirit once because I was stuffed with doubt in the summoning.

A good tip is to have an intermediary spirit. These are spirits that are protectors during the rite to ensure that a spirit does not try anything, that false spirits do not come in place of the spirit being summoned and to just keep whispering in your ear to make sure the rite goes fine. For certain witches, these will be certain deities such as their patrons, their patron saint, a guardian or tutelary spirit and so on.

The Moon in Virgo is desirable as anything is obtainable and bowl divination can be performed at this time. The Moon in Cancer is useful for performing spells of reconciliation and air divination The Moon in Gemini is suited to spells of Binding The Moon in Libra is suited towards invocations, spells of release and necromancy The Moon in Pisces is suited to Love Charms The Moon in Sagittarius is suited to conducting business The Moon in Capricorn - do what is necessary

The Days and Hours of Saturn are suited towards works where one summons the spirits of those that died a natural death. One may also work to bring good or bad fortune to a building, have your familiar spirits attend you in your sleep, cause good or ill success to businessess, possessions, goods, seeds, fruits and similar things. Spells can be done to acquire learning and also to bring destruction and death, and to sow hatred and discord.

The Days and Hours of Jupiter are suited to obtaining honours, acquiring riches, contracting friendships, preserving health and arriving at all thou canst desire.

The Days and Hours of Mars are suited towards works regarding works, to arriving at military honour, acquiring courage, to overthrow enemies and further to cause ruin, slaughter, cruelty and discord, to wound and to give death.

The Days and Hours of the Sun are good at perfecting experiments regarding temporal health, hope, gain, fortune, divination, the favour of princes (or those high in power), to dissolve hostility and to make friends.

The Days and Hours of Venus are suited to forming friendships, for kindness and love, for joyous and pleasant undertakings, and for travelling.

The Days and Hours of Mercury are suited to works for eloquence and intelligence, promptitude in business, science and divination, wonders, apparitions and answers regarding the future, you can operate under this planet for thefts, writings, deceit and merchandise.

The Days and Hours of the Mon are good for embassies, voyages, envoys, mesages, navigations, reconciliation, love, acquisition of merchandise by water and dreams.

The Hours of Saturn, Mars and the Moon are good for speaking with Spirits and those of Mercury aid in the recovering of stolen goods by way of Spirits

The Hours of Mars serve to summon spirits of those slain in battle

The Hours of Venus, the Sun and Jupiter are adapted to any operations whatsoever of love, kindness and of invisibility.

The Hours of Saturn and Mars and the days where the moon is conjunct with them or when she receives their opposition or quartile aspect is suited for works to inspire hatred, enmity, quarrel and discord.

The Hours of Mercury are good for the undertaking of spells related to games, jests and the like.

The Hours of the Moon are suitable for making trial of experiments relating to the recovery of stolen goods, for obtaining nocturnal visions, for summoning spirits in sleep and for preparing anything in relation to water.

The Hours of the Sun, Jupiter and Venus, particularly on the days that they rule are suited for all extraordinary, uncommon or unknown operations.

The Hours of Venus are further useful for lots, poisons and all things of the Nature of Venus, for preparing powders provocative of madness and the like things.

For matters of necromancy, invocations of spirits and the recovery of stolen property - the moon is best in a Earth Sign - Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.

For Matters of love, grace and invisibility - let the moon be in a Fire Sign - Aries, Leo or Sagittarius

For Matters of hatred, discord or destruction - let the Moon be in a watery sign - Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces

For Matters of a peculiar nature - the Moon should be in an airy sign - Gemini, Libra or Aquarius.

The Waxing Moon is supportive of all constructions and operations of any matter. The Full moon is good for any experiment. The waning moon is good for war, disturbance and discord. The moon when she nears her new phase is suited for invisibility and death. No works should be done when the Moon is dark, however.

If you wish to converse with spirits - then let it be done at the day and hour of Mercury (wednesday at the corresponding hour) and let the moon and sun be in an airy sign.
