Sol and the gang

Worked on something a bit bigger than normal. A proper character lineup of Sol, Juno, Roto, and Mani. They’re about to get into all sorts of shenanigans and adventures.

Sol: Probably what could be called the leader. Peppy and horribly cursed with a half life of sorts. One of the traits of that curse is shown by her eyes, the other by the shadow. It's generally an asshole.

Juno: A wannabe explorer, adventurer, con artist, etc. Doesn't really know what she wants but wants to seem cool much like the stories she grew up with, to varying degrees of success. Visually impaired and unable to see outside of natural light.

Roto: Mushroom lad engineer in training. They and the mushroom have a major interest in old world technology and their construction. Studied trains for a few years as an apprentice before the start of the story.

Mani: Sol's twin brother. Also cursed but with a poor constitution instead. Has a fascination with technology but not the energy to actually seek an apprenticeship himself. Has read every publicly available machine manual.

in the Dark Souls series, it’s consistently associated with scaleless magic dragons. in Elden Ring, it’s associated with Ranni the Witch, but notably, guarded by a magic dragon.

in Bloodborne, it belongs to Ludwig, who is a big horse. by the Transitive Property, does this make Ludwig a magic dragon?

Okay, time for more cards in that lovely shade of...

RED

Okay I'm gonna go on a massive fucking leap here, but the only other card that has magic that looks like this is "Unchained Berserker", who is magically empowering his chains with fire. So this lady is from Theros.

This absolute fucking criminal of the meta-game is from New Capenna, and I imagine a lot of you who actually play the game wish he'd stayed there.

Despite the fact that scorpion dragons are such a fitting part of Thunder Junction's aesthetic that there's really no reason for them NOT to be endemic, beyond the fact that it'd combine with the cacti-folk in making it clear this plane is kinda fucking weird, these guys are from Gastal. I hope we go there one day.

The ashen look of this lady's movements don't match the Hellspurs in the slightest, so I'm going to go for another deep cut and say this is a friend from Azgol

Is this one of the only reprints in the set? I don't remember what other cards are. Anyway this card has always been from Dominaria and I see no reason not to keep it that way.

Since time immemorial, Magic the Gathering has had one simple rule; no guns. Starting with Ixalan they... relaxed, that rule, showing people with harpoon launchers or ship cannons strapped to their arms that are not TECHNICALLY guns.

Then in New Capenna, they had people making finger guns and using flash-magic that appeared like muzzle fires, and did eventually have that one tommygunelectricity generator that shoots lightning.

Now we have Thunder Junction. Where it's okay to have chain-guns as long as they shoot arrows, because arrows aren't bullets so it's not a gun. Lol.

Anyway this feels uniquely Thunder Junction to me.

Another one of those chain-shots the Slickshots love to do, but this time no chain- instead a length of lightning. I'm calling this Ravnican.

Onto the commander deck cards, we open up with this incredible bit of ground-cracking. This is a Kaldheim fire giant through and through.

I've seen this exact sort of effect before on a card but for the life of me I cannot recall where. I think it was on Tarkir though, so lets call it that.

This flavor text is strange since there's no actual evidence of other people in the frame but the two gunslingers, but sure whatever.

Controversial statement but the very "that's just a regular name" of the flavor text makes me think this is an Atiin person about to meet an unfortunate end. His thunder-pistol also feels similar to other Atiin cards we haven't seen yet.

I'm tempted to see this is another Zendikari elemental waking up in the wrong plane due to the Omenpaths, but sadly they tend not to be animus oriented like this, and this is more dragon than elemental.

THIS is the native dragons of Thunder Junction, as it turns out.

The purple lightning and the dead faces suggests to me this is some Cosmium infused lost dead of the plane rising up like Ixalan's creepy spirit echoes, amplified but Thunder. I think this is safely Thunder Junction aspected, but only because it was made native here by the Formorions.

The Hellspurs continue to do what the Hellspurs do- which is to say, they skew the numbers heavily. Also, a Gastalian dragon is in the background here, cute.

This was once Innistradi based on the design elements of another card we'll see later, but this bad boy is well and truly proper Thunder Junction now.

Hilariously the Hellspur designs speak to my sensibilities so much that I can't really like, blame them, and it makes sense that Black and Red would have the most people here who are like "naw fuck home, this is my new place of residence".

... now because I'm a huge nerd I'm thinking about how some of my characters would react in their MTG AU forms to Thunder Junction...

Once more we return to Outlaws of Thunder Junction. We've got some more critters to identify so lets get to doin' that! Last time we dealt with Black, with the other parts being here and here. For now though, it is time to tackle...

RED

As with the Black cards, Hellspurs like this have mutated themselves beyond all belief so they're now functionally native to Thunder Junction. Love those magmatic skeleton horses though.

Speaking of magmatic skeleton horses; look at this baby! Calamity is an incredible creature and is a (supremely fucked up) legendary of the plane.

Get caught up in it! This is once more the Hellspurs running rampant with their chaos mutations. Look at'em go!

I saw a weird amount of hate for this card, but I have no understanding as to why. Anyway, this little doggy is endemic to Thunder Junction.

I have no real justification for this but the vibe this lady gives me is Tarkir. Maybe it is the weaving through the lightning bolts?

Rakdos having a hell of a time here on the party plane. This is from Ravnica, and a good reminder of why one of the laws on that plane is "The Rakdos Cult can do what they want to keep their boss from getting uppity".

One of the funnest cards in terms of like, flavorfully showcasing the way Thunder Junction works as a plane. I kinda wish we had more of these to be honest.

I'm marking this one down as Amonkhet because that's the first thing she brought up, and it makes the most sense to me that a native of the plane would be best suited to selling that stuff. I likely shouldn't go shopping in a bazaar.

While this isn't a direct story spotlight (the bomb Breeches made explicitly DID NOT touch the train, as was the intent) I think it is safe to say this is still another one of his more deadly explosive endeavors, so this is from Ixalan.

Who trusts a monkey with explosives anyway?

I forget where I heard this, but this is the thunder of the plane mutating the creatures to become even stronger- this used to be a gopher! Now it's a getter instead. Endemic to Thunder Junction.

A courser is the term used for stronger, swifter horses typically used as war-horses. Sturdy bastards. This is a lizard that is a 4/2 so it really shouldn't be a courser I think? Either way, native to Thunder Junction.

Train heists can happen on like two other planes from Thunder Junction, but this particular style of train heist belongs to it and it alone. Also I love the tomahawk thunder-pistol in this art, that's some good shit right there.

Another Hellspur, another card that sources itself from Thunder Junction itself. I fucking love this art though, look at it!

The greatest tragedy of Thunder Junction being the plane it is is that we didn't get to se Angrath and his daughters. While you could prooobably place this minotaur to Dominaria, it's a Hellspur so it's a Hellspur. You know the drill.

Do you think it hurts replacing your eyes with a heated vent-grill?

I don't think I saw this card in my initial run-through of the set. I love that he has a gold fang tooth replacement, that's fun. One of the least mutated Hellspurs so probably from New Capenna, but my rules are my rules. Thunder Junction!

Technically not highway robbery as there is no highways on this plane. Native to Thunder Junction.

TWAS I WHAT SET THE BLAZE! Endemic life of Thunder Junction, and quite a lovely little critter at that.

This one took a bit of thinkinng, but after looking at the giants of various planes, I think this is from Dominaria. He's just got the vibe.

This his friend above, this minotaur is a trickier one to place... but I think he's from Ravnica. Ex Boros turned gunslinger, you know how it is.

Magda! This lovely lady is from Kaldheim! Ironically her previous card was "Brazen Outlaw" but in neither instance is she ACTUALLY an outlaw mechanically. Her tokens are the non-endemic Scorpion Dragons of Gastal, but I won't be counting tokens till the end so leave me be.

This toasty little critter is endemic to the plane- and probably used to have a diet of thunder before any wizards came about with some much easier prey to snatch up.

I like to believe the little jet of flame is its tongue.

This pair of soon to be very dead friends are Hellspurs- and I just wanna say, they look like they're having the times of their lives. Here for a good one, not a long one and all that.

More Hellspurs doing Hellspur stuff. God these mutations are freaky- I'm shocked none of the people who are horny for being a Phyrexian jumped at these.

Our first actual carded appearance of the Cacti Folk of the plane! A white card had one being picked up by a faerie but this is their first actual like, real card! They're endemic to Thunder Junction, and by rights are the actual honest to god native population of the plane.

The corn-cob guns are an inspired choice, tbh.

I personally call bullshit that the Thunder was created by the Omenpaths. Even if it was, none of the people coming here would fucking know that.

Really love the "animation" in this card. I'm gonna say she's from Innistrad because this weapon looks like it'd fit there.

This massive porcupine is, as you'd expect, native to Thunder Junction. So many of those in Red...

This master of Santoryu is categorically just explicitly a monkey-goblin from Ixalan. What a perfect little creature, look at him go.

The second half of that kaiyote up above. Put'em together and you get a fun little image. This is of course native to Thunder Junction.

Have enough people chased roadrunners for this saying to catch on in the yearish they've had to live here? That's one hell of a meme infection...

This art was a little hard to parse, but it's something huckin' a molten knife through some kind of storm of Thunder. I like it, but it's impossible to tell where it is from.

It's not got as much bondage as you'd expect for them, but I think these two are from the Rakdos Cult and are doing their best to branch out. Ravnica, then!

The dinosaur tokens and the dinosaurs in his art are all Ixalani, so this wonderful old man is from there as well. Like I said we'll counter the tokens later.

Game concept that's probably already been done: A videogame about possession, where you, the player, are the foreign entity possessing the character you are playing as.

The story's whole point is to get you out of the protagonist's head, and since you want to complete the game, it's presumable that you therefore want to help the protagonist get rid of you. While you control the playable character's body, their narration is their own, and frequently comments on what you're making them do, with remarks like "ugh, can we focus? we need to go to the thing" when you start twiddling with pointless things instead of progressing the plot.

And occasionally the character just refuses to do what you want them to do. Instead of an invisible wall barring you from going beyond the boundaries of the game, the character consciously halts and tells you "no, that's far enough. We can't just wander off." If you try to make the character attack NPCs that you can't fight, they shudder and shake their head, going "no, what's wrong with you? She's my friend!"

At first the game kind of railroads what you need to do next, which is specifically by the character you're controlling refusing to do what you're trying to make them do. Their whole goal is to get rid of you, get this evil damn thing out of their head. But gradually you can build up trust with the character, by leading them to things they want or need, and keeping them out of danger.

Consequently, allowing the character to die or get injured makes them harder to control, and more likely to refuse to do as you want. And the less they trust you, the harder the game is. While the sliding scale of trust might not be a visible mechanic in the game, you can hear it in the tone in which they talk to you. The voice lines are mostly the same, but when you start leading the character to a random direction, the same "where are you taking me?" can either be calm but intrigued, or distressed and afraid.

YOMI, was abandoned at birth, taken in by a less-than-comfortable orphanage. Possessed of an icy temper and a sour outlook on life, the earliest memories of her life are hard ones- between her personality and bullying about half-demon, half-beastman heritage, there was hardly any hope she had a future, let alone one where she could be who she knew she was.

And yet that future came. At the age of eleven she was adopted by two women and set on a path of normalcy. Quickly introduced to CARMEN QUITUE, Yomi found that her new life also meant a new friend- and later, a lover who helped her learn to love herself.

Despite her mothers' best attempts, Yomi is still a rowdy teenager at heart, free-running around town and caring quite a deal less for what people think of her, shining with her (somewhat uncontrollable) luxmancy. While she loves to Cause Problems, her dream is to protect others... and rough up some baddies in the process, if she can manage it.

That trouble stirring personality will get her into some hot water eventually though- especially when she crosses paths with someone that starts a change in her heart she isn't quite ready for. The path her heart will lead is lost in the light...

It is made of spun glass and fairytales and iron knives and there are individual lines that I would give my lungs to have written. Shapechangers replies, I saw him every year at NYCC for several years straight, bought something at his table, asked him to sign it, and we spoke. He remembered me from year to year, no small feat at that con. He remembered which stories he'd told me. One year I came back with a different gender on. He squinted at me a bit and said thoughtfully, "I've seen you before in this place." All I had to say was, "last year you told me the story about the inoshishi." And his face cleared, and he leaned in with a grin and told me about a German guitarist who he traveled with, twice. Who transitioned between the first and second time, so he'd gotten to meet this person all over again on the second round. It was a wonderfully kind way to let me know that everything was fine. I was fresh out of the closet and I needed that, and maybe he could see it. The Last Unicorn is the best book in the world and I will defend it and its author til I die. the end. /end ID]

I don't usually talk about celebrities; artists, when I do, and I'm keenly aware that one needn't be a good person to be a hell of a heartwrenching artist. But Peter S. Beagle has written a few of my favorite things in the world, he's an excellent singer and filker, and this Twitter thread was dreadfully important to me. I don't want it going away as Twitter becomes Shitter, because it's so often bad news, isn't it? It's important to me to share trans joy.

CARMEN QUITUE is an interesting young lady. Striking sapphire eyes and a dour stare, you'd think she's quite the rude one, but in truth she's simply inherited the stony expressions of her parents. She's actually quite kind once you get past the pastel skulls.

That unapproachable look isn't the only thing she inherited from her parents- from her father, she's received quite the potent Umbramancy, though she's yet to find a purpose for it beyond sending her shadow-dolls out to retrieve snacks, like rudimentary puppets.

Living in a world that's only recently been reminded of the supernatural is a difficult one, though her doting parents have insulated her from much of that struggle, raising her in the lap of relative luxury. Her girlfriend, YOMI, does her part in sharing the more down-to-earth aspects of life to her.

Of course, the immense power within her may find a use someday, in the future, lattice-work shadows stringing together in defense of her partner and friends... but that future is in shadows as much as she is. Only time will tell.
