15- A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night

The first Iranian Vampire Western ever made, Ana Lily Amirpour's debut basks in the sheer pleasure of pulp. A joyful mash-up of genre, archetype, and iconography, its prolific influences span spaghetti westerns, graphic novels, horror films, and the Iranian New Wave. Vampire fans, Jarmusch fans and, most importantly of all, cat fans will find something to enjoy in this droll monochrome comedy.

14-  Beasts of No Nation

Director Cary Fukunaga  a brings flair, muscular storytelling, directness and a persuasively epic sweep to this brutal, heartrending movie about child soldiers and a civil war in an imaginary West African country, based on the 2005 novel by Nigerian-American author Uzodinma Iweala.  This is very powerful and confidently made movie, a film that really puts its audience through the wringer, which finally refuses any palliative gestures, with towering performances from Elba and Attah.

13-  The Wolf Pack

Locked away from society in an apartment on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the Angulo brothers learn about the outside world through the films that they watch. Nicknamed the Wolfpack, the brothers spend their childhood re-enacting their favorite films using elaborate homemade props and costumes. With no friends and living on welfare, they feed their curiosity, creativity, and imagination with film, which allows them to escape from their feelings of isolation and loneliness. Everything changes when one of the brothers escapes, and the power dynamics in the house are transformed. The Wolfpack must learn how to integrate into society without disbanding the brotherhood.

12-  The Look of Silence

Through Joshua Oppenheimer's work filming perpetrators of the Indonesian genocide, a family of survivors discovers how their son was murdered - and the identity of the men who murdered him. The killers live just down the road, and have been in power ever since the genocide. The family's youngest son, born after the genocide, asks how he can raise his children in a society where survivors are terrorized into silence, and everybody is terrorized into treating the murderers as heroes. In search of answers, he decides to confront each of his brother's killers. The killers still hold power, so these confrontations are dangerous. The killers respond with fear, anger, and naked threats. But he manages these encounters with dignity, asking hard questions about how the killers see what they did, how they live side-by-side with their victims, and how they think their victims see them. Through these confrontations, we feel and understand what it is like to live for decades encircled by powerful neighbors who murdered your children. The Look Of Silence does something virtually without precedent in cinema or in the aftermath of genocide: it documents survivors confronting their relatives' murderers in the absence of any truth and reconciliation process, while the murderers remain in power.

11-  Inherent Vice

"Inherent Vice," is the seventh feature from Paul Thomas Anderson and the first ever film adaption of a Thomas Pynchon novel. When private eye Doc Sportello's ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a looney bin...well, easy for her to say. It's the tail end of the psychedelic `60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that "love" is another of those words going around at the moment, like "trip" or "groovy," that's being way too overused - except this one usually leads to trouble. With a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists... Part surf noir, part psychedelic romp - all Thomas Pynchon.

10-  El Club

In his last three films, Chilean writer-director Pablo Larrain explored the Pinochet regime’s shattering effect on his homeland in ways bizarre (Tony Manero), bleak (Post Mortem) and hopeful (No), yet always with a true touch of originality. Turning his sights this time on the Catholic church – or whatever seems to be left of it in Chile – he offers up a morosely comic and deeply sacrilegious portrait of four priests exiled to the outskirts of their faith, where they lead an existence that's closer to the exploits of the Soprano family than to anything authorized by the Vatican.

9-  The Witch

Billed as a "New England Folktale," writer-director Robert Eggers' accomplished feature-length debut manages a tricky balance: On the one hand an elegant period piece about the dissolution of a New England family circa 1630, it's also a genuinely unsettling horror movie about possession. Almost exclusively set at a drab cabin and the ominous woods surrounding it, the movie's minimalist approach doesn't lack for authenticity, as Eggers relies on court records and other documents to script the dialogue along with costumes from the period in question. The effect is a haunting narrative of otherworldly forces made especially scary due to the realism surrounding them.

8-  Ex Machina

Alex Garland, writer of 28 Days Later and Sunshine, makes his directorial debut with the stylish and cerebral thriller, EX MACHINA. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company's brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test-charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan's latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated--and more deceptive--than the two men could have imagined. With its reflective surfaces, glacial soundscapes, and Kubrickian geometric compositions, this is knowingly seductive sci-fi cinema, its slyly subversive allegiances hidden by the two-way mirror of the silver screen, its androids dreaming of much more than mere electric sheep.

7-  Mad Max: Fury Road

Filmmaker George Miller gears up for another post-apocalyptic action adventure with Fury Road, the fourth outing in the Mad Max film series. The movie is set in the near future. There are no cities or civilizations left. The landscape is dying of thirst; water—known as Aqua Cola—is severely rationed; and other resources, notably gasoline, are hoarded and tussled over like scraps of food. Max is a survivor, like everyone else, and, as we join the stream of action, he is captured and hauled into servitude at the Citadel.

6-  Carol

In this adaptation of the novel "The Price of Salt" by Patricia Highsmith, Therese (Rooney Mara), a young department-store clerk in 1950s Manhattan, meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), a beautiful older woman stuck in a depressing marriage of convenience. As their bond deepens and they become romantically involved, Carol finds the strength to leave her husband (Kyle Chandler). Unfortunately, her spouse starts to raise questions about her fitness as a mother when he realizes that Carol's relationships with her best friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) and Therese are more than just friendships. Carol is gorgeous, gently groundbreaking, and might be the saddest thing you’ll ever see. More than hugely accomplished cinema, it’s an exquisite work of American art, rippling with a very specific mid-century melancholy, understanding love as the riskiest but most necessary gamble in anyone’s experience.

5-  Phoenix

A spellbinding mystery of identity, illusion, and deception unfolds against the turmoil of post-World War II Germany in the stunning new film from acclaimed director Christian Petzold (Barbara, Jerichow). Nelly (Nina Hoss), a German-Jewish nightclub singer, has survived a concentration camp, but with her face disfigured by a bullet wound. After undergoing reconstructive surgery, Nelly emerges with a new face, one similar but different enough that her former husband, Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld), doesn't recognize her. Rather than reveal herself, Nelly walks into a dangerous game of duplicity and disguise as she tries to figure out if the man she loves may have been the one who betrayed her to the Nazis. Evoking the shadows and haunted mood of post-war Berlin, Phoenix weaves a complex tale of a nation's tragedy and a woman's search for answers as it builds towards an unforgettable, heart-stopping climax.

4-  Victoria

Shot over two hours in a single, dazzling take, Victoria is one of the year’s most impressive technical achievements – but it’s more than mere gimmick. The German film - which first screened at the Berlin film festival where it won the Silver Bear for Cinematography – signals actor-turned-director Sebastian Schipper as a major talent behind the lens. Victoria is a huge logistical and artistic gamble; one which pays off astonishingly.

3-   Youth

Paolo Sorrentino’s new movie set in a Swiss sanatorium is a diverting, minor work, tweaked up with funny ideas and images and visually as stylish as ever. There are brilliant flourishes here that could only have come from Sorrentino: superb swooping camera moves, grotesque faces and angular perspectives, and it always watchable.

1- Son of Saul (Saul Fia)

Oscar nominated Hungarian movie was directed by  László Nemes. Movie shows us there is always a new story to tell about holocaust. The film shows not the horror of the events around the main chracter but his reaction to them; his dark stare does the work on our behalf. Deserves all the awards that it won during the year.

Marcelo Monreal, Brezilya’lı grafik sanatçısı, ünlü simaların yüzlerindeki maskeyi çıkartıp içlerine bakıyor.

Çiçekli grafiklerinin hikayesi çocukluğuna dayanıyor. Küçükken annesi Sao Paulo’da ki bahçelerinde çiçeklerle uğraşırken, Marcelo da etrafta koşup süper kahramancılık oynarmış. Annesi de her anne gibi “hızlı koşma, düşme, kendini yaralama” vs. dermiş, bir gün annesine sormuş “ içimizde ne var çok yaralanınca içimizden ne çıkar?” annesi “çiçekler var” demiş. 

Sanatçının bu serisi annesinden kalan çocukluk anısına yapılmış bir güzelleme.

“The Lobster” üzerine kafa açmalar

Attenberg’den beri takip ettiğim ve çok başarılı bulduğum Yorgos Lanthimos, yeni filmi The Lobster ile Film Ekiminden beri çok konuşulmakta. 

Konusu hakkında herkes hemfikir. Filmin fikri muhteşem. Kısaca özetlemek gerekirse, distopik (tam distopya denilebilir mi sorununun üzerine biraz daha düşünmek gerek) ve sürreal bir toplumsal düzende, insanlara çift olmaları dayatılıyor, David (Collin Farrel) eşi tarafından terkedildikten sonra tutuklanır gibi apar topar bir otele getiriliyor. 45 gün içinde çiftini bulmak durumunda aksi halde seçtiği bir hayvana çevrilecek. 

Yorgos’u takip edenler bilirler, Yorgos’un filimlerinin temel derdi hastalıklı bir yapı olarak ailedir. 2009 yapımı Dogtooth’da (Kynodontas)  faşizmi, mikro ölçekte aile üzerinden anlatarak, aile kavramını ağır bir yükün altına itiyordu. 

Otel ilginç bir yer keşke biraz daha fazla otel hakkında fikir sahibi olsaydık. Tabii ki çok katı kuralları var, insanlar bir hayvana dönüşmek korkusuyla eşlerini aramakta, 45 gün uzatılabilir bir süre, dışarıda avladıkları her “loner” (yalnız) için oteldeki günleri bir gün daha uzuyor. Çift olmanın yazılı olmayan bir kuralı var “benzer bir karakteristiğinin” olması (Otel yöneticisi çiftin ikisininde güzel sesi olması, burnu sürekli kanayan kızla eşleşebilmek için sürekli burnunu hırpalayan Ben Whishaw, loner liderinin anne babasının gitar virtüyözü olması, topal adamın, ayağını burkmuş kadına “yakında topallaması geçecek” diye üzülmesi vs.)  Otelin başka bir ilginçliği, arada olan hiç birşeyi kabul etmemeleri. Örneğin buçuklu ayakkabı numarası ya da biseksüel olmak durumu. Ya eşcinselsindir ya heteroseksüel. 

Çocuğu yerleştirdikleri nokta evlilikleri kurtarmak için doğurulan bebeklere dokunuyor. İlişkiler yolunda gitmezse otel yöneticisi bir çocuk atıyor ilişkiye hatta yönetmeliği şu sözlerle hatırlatıyor: “sorunlarınızı aranızda kendiniz çözemezseniz size bir çocuk tahsis edilecek, her zaman işe yaramıştır.”

Nihayetinde David sahip olmadığı bir karakteristiği rol edinip, kendine bir eş adayı buluyor fakat bu ilişki denemesi 2 günü bulmuyor. (süprizli sahneleri anlatmıyorum tabii ki) Oteldeyken  "insanın hissetmediği halde hissediyor gibi davranması, hissettiği halde hissetmiyor gibi davranmasından daha zor" diyor, kahramanımız. 

Filmin ikinci kısmı Loner’ların hayatına odaklanıyor. Loner’lar ise yalnız kalmayı tercih eden anarşistler, bir liderleri var ( Lea Seydoux) ormanda yaşıyor ve otel sakinlerinin avı oluyorlar. Loner’ların kuralları da bir o kadar katı. Örneğin; flört eden lonerlar cezalandırılıyor. İnsanlar beraber müzik dinlemiyorlar, müziği paylaşmak yasak. 

Otel, bireyleri korku ve zorlamalar ile toplumsal statükonun kalıbına oturturken; orman, iktidarın metodu ile iktidara karşı duruyor. Önceki filmi Dogtooth’da iktidara, iktidar��n yarattığı normlarla karşı gelen kızımızın evden çıkabilmek için köpek dişini kırması gibi. 

Otelden kaçan ve Loner’lara katılan David, bir loner’a aşık oluyor. “hissettiği halde hissetmiyor gibi” davranmanın aksinden daha kolay olmadığını burada anlıyor. Diğer bir yandan da çift olmanın kuralı olan benzer bir karakteristiğe sahip olmak kuralını hala sorgulamıyor, Rachel Weisz ile onu bir çift yapan şeyin ikisinin de miyop olmasına bağlıyor. Hatta miyop olduğundan şüphelendiği bir adamdan kıskanıyor sevdiği kadını. Bu kurala bağlılıkları filmi süpriz sona götürüyor. 

David dışındaki karakterlerin adlarının olmaması da karakterleri yeniden üretilir modeller konuma getiriyor. 

Yorgos Lanthimos’un bu filmi Hollywood için yaptığı gerçeği filmi işleyişinde kendini gösteriyor. (önceki filmlerini bilmeyenler için not: önceki filmlerinde uluslararası starlar yoktu ve film dili yunancaydı) Alışkın olduğumuz üstü kapalı, mecazi anlatım dilinin seviyesi aşağı çekiliyor hatta kör göze parmak oluyor. Art House dediğimiz doku maalesef Hollywood’unki ile uyuşmuyor. Ana akım sinema izleyicisine ulaşamıyor, kendi izleyicisini de nevi şahsına münhasır dilinden yoksun bırakıyor. 

“The Lobster” yönetmenin üslup açısından en kafası karışık ve hatta en zayıf filmi olsa da (yani bir “Dogtooth” değil) 2015 yılının en iyi filmlerinden biri olduğu gerçeğini değiştirmiyor.

Beton ormanların geometrisi

Lübnan’lı fotoğraf sanatçısı Serge Najjar, ‘Soyut Gerçeklik’ adını verdiği fotoğraf serisinde, izleyiciye mimarinin geometrisi ile renklerin karşıtlığının oluşturduğu görsel bir deneyim sunuyor. Aralarında çok ünlü mimari yapılarında bulunduğu seride, yapının bir kısmına odaklanıp geometrik bir alan üzerinde insanları gözlüyor. İnsanların yarattıkları beton ormanlar içinde ne kadar küçük kaldığını gözlemlerken bir yandan yapının insan ile ilişkisine tanık oluyoruz. Najjar bir röportajında “mimari yapı ve insan ilişkisi çok ilginç, insanın varlığı fotoğraflanan yapıya bir ölçü kazandırıp, ona bir sıcaklık verirken, karşılığında yapı da insan figürüne soyut bir boyut kazandırıyor.” diyor. Serge Najjar’ın geometrik soyut sanat geleneğini, insan faktörü ekleyerek dönüştürmesi farklı bir perspektif ve algı yaratıyor. COP21′de aktivist sanat

‘Fosil yakıtlarının çevreye zararını biliyorduk ama kamusal olarak reddettik. MOBIL’

Bu sene Pariste gerçekleşen  21. İklim Değişikliği Taraflar Konferansı’nda (COP21), sera gazı salınımını sınırlandıracak küresel bir anlaşmaya varılması bekleniyor. Konferansın sponsorları arasında ise iklim değişikliğinin baş müsebbipleri arasında bulunan havayolları, otomobil imalatçıları, enerji şirketleri ve bankalar bulunuyor.  BM İklim Değişikliği Taraflar Konferansı’nın yapılmaya başlandığı 1995 senesinden bu yana dünya genelinde sera gazı salınımı %63 oranında arttığı verileri mevcut. 

Brandalism ekibi bünyesinde, 82 sanatçı , konferans sebebi ile yeşile bürünen firmaların foyasını ortaya çıkartmak için 600 sahte reklam posteri tasarlamışlar. Üzerine konferansın sponsorlarından JCDeux’un reklam panolarını işgal etmişler.

İstanbul: Tutku, neşe, Öfke

Roma, Maxxi İran sanatını konu edindiği sergisinden sonra Ortadoğu’lu dinamikleri anlamak üzere İstanbul (11 Aralık, 30 Nisan) sergisini açıyor. 

“İstanbul: Tutku, neşe, öfke” sergisi ismini şehrin “yaratım” tutkusundan, amaçlara ulaşmanın “neşesinden” ve şehrin siyasi gerginlerinden doğan”öfke”den alıyor. Serginin ismi de şehri kendisi gibi uçlarda dolaşıyor. 

Gezi protestoları fikri ile doğan sergi Kentsel dönüşüm, siyasi çatışmalar, yenilikçi üretim modelleri, jeopolitik dayatmalar ve umut üzerine kurgulanmış. 

Küratörlüğünü 10. Uluslararası İstanbul Bienali “ İmkânsız değil, Üstelik Gerekli: Küresel Savaş Çağında İyimserlik”  Küratörü  Hou Hanru, bağımsız küratör Ceren Erdem, Elena Motisi, Maxxi küratörü Donatella Saroli üstlenmiş.

World’s Top Biennials, Triennials, and Miscellennials

The Biennial became an increasingly important international art exhibition, especially in 90′s, with the concept of curated exhibitions. Approximately 200 international art  biennials, triennials, quadrennials, and quinquennials taking place all over the world. Biennials are important showcases for understanding or maybe shaping the art of the our time. And here listed the most important biennials of world according to art critics.  1. La Biennale di Venezia 

It is called granfather of biennial circuit. Countries are presented by permenant pavillions and also there are pop-up pavillions around the city. Starting from May and ends at the end of November. It is famous for star artists and curators. 2. Documenta

Documenta is an exhibition of modern and contemporary art which takes place every five years in Kassel, Germany. It was founded by artist, teacher and curator Arnold Bode in 1955 as part of the Bundesgartenschau (Federal Horticultural Show) which took place in Kassel at that time, and was an attempt to bring Germany up to speed with modern art, both banishing and repressing the cultural darkness of Nazism. 

3. Manifesta 

Manifesta, the roving European Biennial of Contemporary Art, is a European pan-regional contemporary cultural biennale, described in 2010 by the Wall Street Journal as "stunning in its scope and uncompromisingly experimental in its approach" Unlike most biennials, Manifesta is held in a different location each time, and the concept of an itinerant event first took shape in Rotterdam in 1996 and the next one will take place in Zurich in 2016. 

4.   Bienal de São Paulo

The world's second-oldest biennial after Venice, the Bienal de São Paulo has taken place every other year since 1951, when  the biennial was founded by the Italian-Brazilian industrialist Ciccillo Matarazzo (1898–1977).  The format of it is like its Venetian role model, São Paulo used to host national presentations as well as international exhibitions held under the direction of rotating chief curators.

5.  Havana Bienniale

The Havana Biennial Art Exhibition takes place in Havana (Cuba) every two years and features mainly non-western artists such as Latin American and Caribbean artists. During the event, artists transform the city into a big showcase of contemporary art it is held  in different venues such as churches, art spaces, historical sites and outdoor city areas.

6. Sydney Bienniale

Began in 1973, making it the third oldest biennial in the world.

Held in even years, the Biennale is a three-month long exhibition. Additionally numerous events such as artist talks, film screenings, and guided tours take place and all is free to the public.

Typically, a well-known curator is selected by committee to produce a thematic group art exhibition.

7. İstanbul Bienniale

The Istanbul Biennial began in 1987 and has become one of the most prestigious international art exhibitions that features modern and contemporary art. It is  is held in different venues chosen by the biennial's curator such as warehouses, art spaces, historical sites and outdoor city areas. Considered as one of the most prestigious biennials alongside Venice, São Paulo and Sydney, the International İstanbul Biennial prefers an exhibition model which enables a dialogue between artists and the audience through the work of the artists instead of a national representation model. The curator, appointed by an international advisory board, develops a conceptual framework according to which a variety of artists and projects are invited to the exhibition.

8. Berlin Bienniale

Biennal was established in 1998,  is shaped by the different concepts of well-known curators appointed to enter into a dialogue with the city, its general public, the people interested in art as well as the artists of this world. 

9.  Shanghai Bienniale

The Shanghai Biennale was established in 1996 as a painting exhibition for local artists using traditional Chinese painting techniques. By 2000, the Shanghai Biennale became a thematic curated exhibition featuring international contemporary artists, including a high proportion of Chinese contemporary artists.
