I think we need to establish the distinction between "trauma dumping, manipulating people into praising you, etc" and "sharing the things that are bothering you, needing reassurance, and just simply being friends" because I hate when my friends tell me about what's troubling them and also say sorry in the same breath, sometimes even before. Because yes trauma dumping is real but so is people not having anyone to talk to, and I would be damned if that happens to my friends in the time period when we are friends. Like, yes please rant all you want/need, seek reassurance, and no it's not troubling me because I love you, and I would hate it if you have to deal with it all alone.

Or, Sirius pushes James into Lily at the employee pool party, and Lily panics and lies about not knowing how to swim. James being James, offers to teach her how to swim, they fall in love from there and live happily ever after.

i think it’s a shame that so many people speak perfect english just from the internet/tv and get no real recognition for it. there’s this horrible assumption that being fluent in english is just a given (propaganda from americans in cargo shorts i believe) and english is brushed off as an “easy” language. that isn’t the case at all and if you’ve learned english that’s amazing and im honestly in awe. i hate that people achieve so much to reach the minimum expectation, and then english speakers will pat themselves on the back for being able to count to 10 in french

Can you see him returning to hogwarts for their seventh year as the head boy, having accepted that he loved her but it didn't matter? Can you see him being subdued most of the time, worrying the marauders? Can you hear lily's heart breaking when she saw him like that (for love also loves to pay attention to details)? Can you see the marauders and lily asking him what's wrong and him saying nothing? Sirius is the first to notice his longing glances at lily. He asks him about it, and at first he denies, but then he tells him everything. Sirius understands his reasons but he also hates to see his best mate like this so he, Remus, and Peter (who have also noticed by now), tell him how it's not his fault that he has these feelings for lily, that they are valid (really? thanks pete) and that it would be the best to actually tell her (blimey! are you insane moony?) so that he could finally move on or move in ("padfoot!" "What? I didn't mean it in that way! You're the dirty minded one!). So after much convincing, he finally tells her on one of their head patrols one night, when they were alone in a corridor. Can you imagine her asking "so do you fancy someone?" in a very platonic way, mind you, and him replying, "yes, you."? Can you see the smile slipping off her face as he continues, shocked at his own bravado, "well actually, "fancy" doesn't sum up what I feel, I think I love you. But I know you don't feel the same way, neither do I expect you to. I just wanted you to know, so that you could tell me that you don't feel the same way and I could finally- wait what's wrong?" Can you see the startled look on his face, because he didn't mean to make her cry, yet here she is, with tears in her eyes that threatened to fall while he panicked about confessing being a bad idea? Can you see him starting to apologize, "I knew this would be a bad idea, I am so sorry lily-" when she cuts him off with "I never thought you would feel the same way"? Can you see him looking completely shocked, as lily continues, "and what are you on about? thank god you said it, otherwise I'd have never known because you seem to have somehow managed to reach some pretty false conclusions here, potter. because I've said it once, I will say it again. I love you too. well I've never said it with a "too" which is pretty cool now that I'm doing it. I still can't believe that you- oh are you crying?" Can you hear him saying, "can a man not cry when he just got to know that the love of his life loves him back, after weeks of believing that it could never happen?" Can you see them kissing, with not one mistletoe in sight, because what is a mistletoe compared to the wonders of love? Because I do.

That was when everyone saw him stop. Lily found a "sorry for everything" card on her pillow the next day (for fuck's sake! Ofcourse he can climb the staircase to our dormitories). After testing the waters for a week or two, she was relieved that there wasn't the risk of hearing "Alright Evans?" every time he crosses paths with her or a bouquet of lilies erupting out of her pen or books anymore. He was happy that she didn't seem exasperated everytime she saw him anymore. Now that he is not trying to impress her all the time, he finally listens to what she is saying, sees what she is doing. He sees how wonderful her thoughts are and how strong are her morals. He sees how much fun they have together. He sees how good of a friend she is when she is not being annoyed. He sees she is not totally opposed to the idea of sneaking out at night under the invisibility cloak. He sees how smart and sneaky she is when she made their way out of so many close catches. Before, he obviously thought she was pretty, but now he thinks she is the most beautiful person to ever exist. Before, he obviously thought she looked pretty when she laughed, but now he hates when he sees her sad, and makes lots of jokes to bring that smile back on her face. This summer break was weird. In previous breaks, except the last one, he used to be worried about sirius, wondering what must have been happening in the ancient and most noble house of blacks. But this summer, he feels like something was missing. He has this urge to write letters to lily, to see her, to talk to her, and often starts to find himself in vivid daydreams with her. But he shakes himself out of them everytime because he cannot love her? Not in that way? He has found a great friend in her. He is not going to ruin it. He remembers the time last year when she said that she loved him. He remembers feeling so foolish to have ever said that to her before. After listening to the intensity with which she had said it, his seemed laughable. He remembers realizing that if asked again, he wouldn't have been able to say it back and mean it. He remembers how awkward it was for a week or two after which she finally started warming up to him, finally decided to leave everything in the past and start a new friendship. So before he allows himself to accept his feelings, he thinks of how she has moved on and he cannot do this to her, how she deserves better, how he can't risk their friendship, and of how the reasons he is not supposed to feel this way. He repeats these reasons all the time in his head like a chant. So after the painful denial of weeks, when he finally is able to accept his feelings, he knows that he is accepting flowers that are made to look beautiful to hide the poisonous smell. He is accepting roses with illusionary petals but very real thorns that stab you again and again but you won't even beg them to stop because you like the taste of your own blood. He realizes that he has fallen in love with the cool wind that blew on his face yesterday, with tha sunset that looked pretty four days ago. He has fallen in love with the sun at night and the moon in the day, with the flower that has withered away. Because that was when everyone saw him stop but in reality, that was when it all began.

Yeah I know james loved lily, pursued her for years, asked her out on inappropriate occasion(s) (one is canon), pulled many stunts and impress her, but do you really think that is love? Love is not loud and attention seeking. It is something that thrives in quiet places, stolen glances, eye contacts that last longer than normal, memorizing their timetable, romantic dreams, making a big deal out of holding hands, blushing a little too hard when your friends mention them, worrying a little too much when they don't show up for a day's class. When something happens to them, love may not shriek the loudest, but it breaks the most. But love is also disappointment. What do you do when you love them and they do nothing but hurt you, unknowingly? How do you forgive them, and more importantly how do you forgive yourself? Can you not see lily sitting in secluded classrooms, empty dormitories and abandoned tower tops, wondering all of this? Can you not see her being utterly in love with james potter, which nobody knows about, while he is out there, making a huge show out of his "love"? Can you not see why she was so disappointed in him and only him? Not sirius, him. Because yes he is sweet and cares about her and that made her fall in love with him, but he is also this fucking arsehole who does the weirdest things, hurts her friend severus, does not know when to stop with his pranks, does not know when he has stopped having fun and started hurting people and cannot for the life of him figure out why she won't agree to go out with him. She has seen him with people he loves. She knows he will do anything sirius tells him to. She knows he, Sirius and Peter take care of remus every full moon. She knows he helps Peter with his anxiety and always tries to make him feel included. But she also knows he ignores whatever she says, doesn't take her seriously when she tells him to stop, doesn't take her seriously when she tells him his harmful pranks aren't "attractive". She knows he does not love her. Love is also contained in heavy sighs. Sighs of realization that they will never be yours, you will never be able to accept them, and they will never try. Can you see sixteen years old Lily being on the verge of a breakdown when he comes jumping around, with his three friends, and tells her he bets she hasn't seen this trick that he can do on his broomstick, and he is sure that it will impress her? Can you see him answering "because i love you" to her question "why do you try so hard?" Can you see her finally breaking and telling him to fuck off and that he knows nothing about love because if he did, he wouldn't be doing these elaborate tricks, that he would be really paying attention and see how much this bothers her, and "I know you don't love me because unlike you, I pay attention to your actions, your words, your everything because I love you. And I regret every bit of it and very much wish I didn't."? Then she storms away, not with tears but mere disappointment in her eyes, but is disappointment really "mere"? That was when he stopped. That was when she told herself she stopped.
