Found another opossum on a walk today. Why am I finding so many dead opossums lately?
It's gross and I was a mile from my house, so I did not take it. I might check on it in a week or so.

hi! I really love your content. I’d buy if i could, but I can’t right now, sorry 🥲
i was just wondering as a starter bone collector what to call a certain vertebrae?
Tumblr media
The one on the right is what I’m referring to. Do you know what it’s called? For context, this was in an opossum skeleton. If you could tell me, that’d be great! I’m to lazy to do my own research for some reason 😭
If you're asking for the part of the spine, it's lumbar, or the vertebra past the ribs but before the pelvis. Thoracic are the verts with ribs attached. Cervical are the verts below the skull before the ribs. Caudal are tail vertebra. There's probably someone who can tell you where each type of vertebra transitions better than I can, but that's how I remember learning it.

Obed River trail at Lilly Bridge, Lancing, TN (March 25, 2024)
There's something almost spiritual about walking along the edge of a cliff, seeing the water hundreds of feet below, knowing the valley the river sits in was carved out by it for an amount of time the human brain can't even fathom. I just wish there had been a path along the river so I could admire just how high the cliffs stood. This part of the park is also a dedicated dark zone, and I really want to go back at night some time to see the stars.

Trigger warning for weird sounds/unreality type stuff
Not my usual main-blog content, but I took a video of my dog's shadow today because she looked like she was walking like a fancy horse and I wanted to see if her walk looked cool slowed down. So I set that shit to go as slow as my video editing software will do, and I'm about to piss my pants from how funny this is
The sound is not edited at all. I added the original clip at the end for comparison; the shift from "you're gonna die" sounds to "this is just an old dog, walking" is jarring to say the least. Only difference between the two is it's been slowed down a bunch. The sound is a mix of wind and traffic. That it gets louder as her shadow extends is so fucking funny to me. It's the kind of shit you'd see in an ARG or other horror content to denote that the dog is possessed. I'm laughing so hard my cat is concerned. This is the single best video edit I will ever make, and it was done by scrolling a single setting to it's lowest point.
But also: If my dog did end up being possessed or something, I would still take care of her. She's old and she's protected me from danger a number of times, and I would kill for her if I had to. She's more of a person to me than most people I meet, demon or not 🤣

Well, just got word from my GM that, unless I can produce her a doctor's note saying I'm sick, I should seek other employment. It's 6:30pm on a Saturday, meaning my only option is the hospital. Meaning she thinks I should spend $2000 to prove I'm sick instead of just, like, hearing how congested I am over the phone. I even offered to come in to prove it and was told no, I'm clearly sick and they don't want me infecting the rest of the crew, but still get a doctor's note. I have set up two interviews for Tuesday, so I'm hoping those will be fruitful. But the coupon will still stay up through the end of April for anyone interested 🥲
So I started a new job recently under the assumption that tips were consistently several hundred dollars per night. I'm being scheduled 4 days a week and making about $400 a week. My bills per month are approaching $2000. I just realized insurance on my truck comes out of my account in 2 days as well. In total, I have about $800 to my name. This will cover my car payment ($307), utilities (around $150), phone ($75), and insurance ($260) only. My rent is $1100. My credit card (just gas) is usually $100. I've applied to so many jobs that pay hourly instead of based on tips and hand gotten no calls back. I'm supposed to be starting part time at the Post Office nearest me, but that's not until next month and by then rent will be overdue. If I keep getting tipped like I have been, I'll get about $800 more this month. Which is still a couple hundred short of what I need, and that number excludes food. Who needs to eat anyway? In this economy?!
So I'm doing free shipping on any orders over $50 in my shop through the end of April using the code below. I haven't been this scared that I won't be able to make ends meet in my adult life. I'm usually pretty good about making shit work, but I'm stuck where I'm at right now and nothing I do is helping with tips. I'm talking consistently being given tables who are clearly already mad who will order $250 in food and tip me $15 kinda shit. I haven't eaten anything but ramen and whatever I can sneak out of the kitchen at work in 2 days because I'm trying to prepare for food scarcity. Anything helps. If I lose my apartment I'm homeless and will have to live in my car with my cat and dog.

If anyone can help out, I'd really appreciate it! I've been so sick the past two days that I haven't been able to leave my bed or couch without being super uncomfortable, so I've lost out on $200+ from working this weekend!

Got my tiny ass cat to go hiking today. She's fully vaccinated and on flea meds, and I've been slowly acclimating her to walking on a leash around my apartment complex since she got her rabies vax. She doesn't walk too far before she gives up, but she had fun running next to the dog, cringefailing at climbing trees, and sniffing piles of leaves. She loves to play in water any time I've gotten out of the shower or recently used a sink, so I thought she'd be more of a fan of the little creek we walked through; but she has no body fat (because baby) and I think it was just too cold for her. Of 4 miles, she probably walked about 1.2 of that, which is a lot for such a baby cat.

Found this little critter while cleaning my bones today. Kinda ironic for an amphibian to have drowned.

Nothing is quite as creepy as being in the middle of a like 500 acre wildlife preserve and hearing sounds like this.
(it was heavy machinery, nothing scary. Just very loud. The audio my phone picked up doesn't do it justice)

So I gave myself the challenge of hiking 100 miles this month, since I don't have a job. And I completed it today! Don't know if I'll stop yet, but I'm definitely taking tomorrow off...
I visited a place I've wanted to go for years called Virgin Falls, roughly 2 hours outside Nashville. I managed to convince my kid brother to tag along, since he likes to sneak out of the house and go on walks around town, and I think he had a good time. He definitely had a look of wonder on his face that I haven't seen since he was a little-little. I went to school near the park, but everyone always warned me not to go because it's super dangerous. It wasn't, though. Maybe to someone without much experience, but I do this kind of thing all the time. Trail map said 8 miles. Ended up being 9.3 (which matters a lot when you're that far in). Pretty much anywhere there was water, there was a cave. All the falls exit into caves. It was beautiful! Most of my photos have my brother's face in them, so I don't have a lot to post, but it was just such a cool time. Highly recommend it to anyone in the area. It's a major task (took 5 hours and all my energy), but it's so worth getting to see the most unique waterfalls I've ever seen.
But yeah. Got my hundred miles in, saw some cool shit, and got to spend time with my troubled teen brother. Overall great day.

Time lapse of my most recent project. Should have done some more extreme highlights along the edges of the rays, but whatever. No way in hell I'm ripping like 6 hours of beads away to redo them.
Also, pardon the lighting. I'm working on getting a proper light for over my art desk, but money and me ain't friends right now 👍

Found an illegal dump site today. Only took the one photo, but there were 5 partial whitetail deer skeletons across maybe a quarter mile of the road. All were shot (shotgun shells present and pellets in some of the bones/on the ground near the bones). Found two doe skulls, and I'm pretty certain it's illegal to kill female deer. Processing the bones I recovered over the next couple of weeks. There were so many vertebral disks, so I'm gonna have a field day making heart-shaped stuff from those :3
