But there are forms of life that are only perceptible with vffsense, and they've visited Earth and fed on life as long as it's existed here."

There was a pause.

Then the human said, "That's the worst thing you've ever said."

"Don't worry about it."

"I think I have to, now."

"No, because - well - you have a species of spider which pretends to be an ant, correct? It's not capable of understanding the fact that it's mimicking an ant, but it instinctually mimics an ant in order to deter predators."

"Sure?"

"Humans produce a vff to mimic varths, predators only perceptible through vffsense. The organisms that would like to feed on you are terrified of varths, and so they leave you alone. You aren't aware you do it, you don't have the capacity to understand you're doing it, but you evolved to instinctually do it to deter predators you can't see."

There was a pause.

Then the human said in a very soft and thoughtful voice, "And are there varths on Earth?"

"Yes," said the alien. "Everywhere. But don't worry about it."

New coworker like a decade younger than me recently discovered I used to be in a band and stumbled upon my music video where my friends and I eat have an eating contest of hot dogs and whiskey until we throw up. When they told me about their discovery I told them I was a little embarrassed and they said, “yeah it was a little cringey.” To lighten the mood I told them I wish they didn’t have to see me get ketchup sprayed all over my body and they said, “oh that was fine, the embarrassing part is where you’re singing and looking at the camera.”

So yowch lol.

Every year I tell myself I will spend more time outside. I just have to make it a habit, as soon as it’s nice out I’ll start hiking like I used to. But then it’s sorta cold and regularly stormy until like early to mid June, and then, WOW! I go outside every day for like a week and I ask myself “why aren’t I always outside this is so nice” and I tell myself “this is the year, I’m an outside person now,” and then after that single week of bliss the temperature rises 15-20 degrees and just stays there, hovering at 100 degrees fucking F for months, rarely even dipping into mild temperatures at night, with the humidity and air pressure making the sun feel like a dagnabbin oven cooking you from above and every other day there’s a warning on the weather apps to not be outside too long because of bad air quality and dangerously high temperatures and I realize that I am not made for this actually.

Honestly I'm just so happy about the progression of Link and Zelda's relationship in totk from botw. It feels so natural. They've both matured, they're very much their own people with their own goals and lives and skills. They're not just the hero and princess anymore: they get to be themselves. And they get to do that together. They're making choices, and not just rolling with the path that destiny has set forth for them.

They're not the only saviors: there's the sages of course, but there's also every single person in Hyrule standing up to evil and saying no, not this time.

It feels like Hyrule is saying to them "you save the world. And while you're doing that, we'll save ourselves."

The story is grown up. From the fierce independence of adolescence to the interdependent care of adulthood. And they're doing it together: caring about people together. Saving the world together.

I really love this game y'all.

I just realized something in Tears of the Kingdom.

When Link awakens a sage, they give him some of their power in the form of a vow as a way to prove they stand with him. This is done differently depending on the sage but it’s mainly done through hand-to-hand contact like a handshake.

Back to the beginning of the game, when Link opens the Temple of Time and sees Zelda’s spiritual form, what does she do?

She shakes his hand and he gains the recall ability.

Zelda, in the past, became the Sage of Time. This scene is her giving her vow to Link and the recall ability is proof of her vow.
