I have seen so many waterfalls in my travels and each have their own unique beauty. But one of my fondest memories will always been the time I traveled to Niagara falls with my grandpa and spent the day taking in the sights. One of the most difficult things for a photographer is trying to capture the emotions that I felt while on location. Niagara falls is one of the most popular tourist destinations with endless photos circulating the internet. However, nothing will quite capture the experience of being there first hand. You stand on the edge of the walkway feeling the refreshing cool mist on your face (and your lens!) as the power of the raging falls lies an undercurrent of sound around you. Even through the whitecap waves, the water is a beautiful emerald green under a deep blue sky. The warm afternoon sun glints off of water droplets transforming the air into a rainbow of mist.
We spent hours standing by the falls and even after all of that time I was still amaze by its beauty.

Seals always look so adorably sad with their big brown eyes and concerned faces. These two were sunbathing on their rocks in the port town of Svalbarðshreppur in northeast Iceland and while they didn't seem to mind my presence, I kept a respectable distance and left them to their sunbathing.
It was so neat traveling around and seeing their curious faces peaking up from the water before ducking back under with barely a ripple.

In many regions, the steady drone of cicadas is a natural part of the summer symphony. However, in North America's northeastern region, even 17 years the background drone becomes a screaming buzz of activity. Cicadas are not well loved within the animal kingdom and are not usually chosen when considering favorites in the insect world. However, there's something adorable about them that I love. They seem friendly and curious, hitching rides and chilling on trees with their broods.
I really enjoyed the last season of the great cicada invasion and made a lot of buddies as I played with my macro lens.

Deep in Bohemia, in central Czechia is the Sedlec Ossuary, also known as the Bone Church. It is a small, gothic chapel built in the 14th century that has a long and dark history of plague, war, and fire. In 1870, František Rint began creating intricate designs, garland, and even an incredibly detailed and carefully arranged chandelier from the 60,000 human remains piled high in pyramids on the grounds.
Despite the bright heat of the sun, inside the underground church the air was cool and dry. It was as if the sanctuary of bones was caught within its own sphere of time. The light was dim, gleaming off of the human remains that were carefully placed together to create each intricate design. No one spoke. Despite its display of artwork, it was also a resting place. Walking around the small chamber was both tranquil and disquieting. Skulls lined walls and pyramids, their owners long since past along with any stories of life experiences they may have witnessed.

We rush through life, surviving each day and focusing on the many problems that arise around us. They seem so insurmountable as each massive barrier breaks through our paths and blocks us from continuing towards our goals, dreams, and the life we want to live.
Stop. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Look up.
Our problems can feel impossible at times. But ultimately we will overcome them. We will push forward and climb up or find a new path around the barriers that try to barricade us from the people we want to be and the goals we yearn to reach. We are but stardust, a passing flicker of memory on the grand scale of the universe. It's going to be okay.
Many of us, especially these last two years, have had to live through some of the most difficult times of our lives. We're all dealing with something. We're all fighting our own battles. And sometimes the nights feel endless and the dark so deep we may never reach the next dawn. But there is beauty in the darkness. The stars burn in the distance and if we allow ourselves to acclimate to the situation, we begin to see the path once again. Maybe we can even see things from a different perspective. We'll get through the night and see the next dawn.
This shot was taken WAY off the beaten path in Iceland. I had a somewhat cryptic set of coordinates to a waterfall on a rocky pass that could barely be called a road. At times there was no road and we crossed several streams and rivers to get there. But we had planned for this and had upgraded to a 4x4 camper to get us to these unknown destinations and diversions.
The location was so breathtaking we decided to spend the night at the top of the waterfall looking up at the milky way and watching the moon rise over the mountains. When the moon finally did rise, the silver illumination was so bright it cast the entire valley in its blinding light.

During this time of year in Provence, France, the landscape transforms into a sea purple under miles and miles of lavender fields.
There was one field of sunflowers I had found in my initial location scouting of the region that I knew I wanted to visit and it was easily one of my favorite parts of the trip.
We wandered the fields of sunflowers and lavender, listening to the gentle hum of buzzing bees and feeling the warmth of the setting sun. That evening, an incredible storm rolled in and we listened to the sky rumble as rain pattered softly into the earth.

One of my favorite critters on the Ryukyu islands are the Ryukyu flying foxes! I loved sitting under trees they gather in and listen to them chatter amongst themselves. They always appeared so curious to me and made me smile when I would see them stretch out their wings that could reach over 4 feet in length, and take to the night sky.

Distant Lands
Iceland. The land of fire and ice. The continents were created by volcanic eruptions that remain active to this day. Massive glaciers span miles and icebergs crack and shift under the warmth of the sun.
And here, in southern Iceland, the sky burst into flames over still waters. There had just been a fierce blizzard and the clouds were gathering in a flowing ripple to the horizon. I had been eyeing that sky all afternoon and as soon as I saw a path down to the water's edge I knew where I would spend the rest of the day.
I had been sitting by the water's edge while the sun was still high, taking in the serene view while composing various options for what I had hoped to be a beautiful sunset. Even with the promising conditions lining up so well, I could have never anticipated the blaze of color that painted the sky. I saw the distant mountains and imagined coasting on a small canoe, drifting over glass waters towards distant lands that only appear when the sky is aflame and the elements align just so.
I tried to capture those feelings and I hope to spark the imagination in anyone who sees these distant mountains under this fiery sky.

Happy World Ocean Day!!
This photo was taken almost five years ago at Maeda Flats in Okinawa, Japan. I first started scuba diving and snorkeling over ten years ago soon after I arrived in Okinawa.
There's something awe-inspiring about slipping beneath the waves and drifting within the underwater world so foreign to our own. It's both exiting and meditative. Floating along the surface, watching the aquatic creatures darting among anemone and munching on coral. The world is muffled, the waves gentle as seaweed sways too and fro with the current.
My first time slipping beneath the waves and seeing the aquatic world that lay beneath was breath taking. Every time I rejoined the ocean creatures in their realm I was captivated by its beauty. Bright, vibrant colored coral spanned the vast ocean floor, highlighted by the glimmering golden rays of sunlight spanning down through the deep blue depths.
Each time I've returned to Okinawa I've visited the beloved ocean I've missed so much.
And each time I've noticed the colors a little duller, the fish a little scarcer.
This last time was the dullest I've seen the coral since I first discovered life underwater all those years ago. The ocean life is dying and it feels like there's very little we can do to stop the massive mechanical machine that grinds the environment to the ground. It's so hard to hold on to hope for the future of our oceans and environment in the face of global change and so many fighting against conversation.
Most scuba divers are familiar with the Project AWARE Foundation and another I have supported in the past is the World Wildlife Fund. There are many organizations that still work hard to do what they can for environmental conservation. Any little bit help.

Venetian Beauty
One of my absolute favorite things about travel is not only seeing the gorgeous natural landscapes and natural wonders around the world, but experiencing the rich and fascinating cultures of others first hand. This world is an incredible place full of diversity and endless differing perspectives. It has been an amazing experience stepping outside of my own culture to learn about others from all over the globe. Travel has been so enriching and eye opening that I made cultural and linguistic anthropology my main focus for my academic studies.
One of the more well known cultural celebrations from Italy is Carnevale di Venezia, or as we know it, Carnival. This is a time where locals and visitors alike don elaborate, stunning, creative, and unique costumes and enjoy numerous balls and extravagant events. Simply walking through the maze of narrow, cobblestone streets of Venice is enough to see the beautiful display and hard work of those in costume. However, Saint Mark’s Square is where everyone gathers and where the festivities occur!

Storms always entrance me. Mesmerize me. Excite me. Calm me. There's nothing quite like standing in the hush between lightning and booming thunder when your heart is pounding and the the tiny hairs on your arms raise in response to the sheer energy held in the air around you.
Trying to predict and capture that elusive lightning strike requires endless patience and focus. You fall into a strange sort of rhythm of the storm, listening to the sky speak above and around you wondering if the next shot will be the one.
This one is an old one but a very fond memory.
Here's to many more long days and nights standing at the brink of rolling storms, feeling the fury of nature and trying to capture that elusive light.

Guardian Rattlesnake
I was traveling with some photographer friends of mine deep in the Pennsylvania 'wilds' when I noticed this beauty on the side of the road. It was already dusk and we almost missed him if it wasn't for the rattling warning of his tail. Thankfully I had my telephoto and kept a safe distance (although my friends were taking video as evidence) as I took a photograph of this gorgeous creature.

Evening at Mont St. Michel.
I knew I wanted this view of this castle in Normandy, Northern France, and arrived early enough to scout out the area until I found the perfect shot! Many hours were spent waiting for the right light and when it came it was breathtaking.

Arctic Sunrise
It was still dark when I ventured out into the snow for my first sunrise photoshoot within the Arctic Circle. I was bundled up in layers of wool and feathery down, tripod on my shoulder, camera in hand, eyes actively scanning the landscape for a good composition in the foreground. Dawn light crept over the landscape, dimly illuminating the snowy shores and waves. The sun had yet to break the horizon when the sky burst into flames of vibrant reds, pinks, and oranges.
Any photographer knows how fleeting light can be. I scrambled to get any photographs I could before the color faded to the soft glow of a new day.
This sunrise would be the first of many breathtaking moments during my time within the Arctic Circle of northern Norway.

Pride is Natural!
What better way to venture into pride month than with one of the most vivid rainbows I have seen! This was taken in Croatia just after a storm as the golden rays peaked through and illuminated this vibrant double rainbow! Even after five years, it's still one of my favorite memory of rainbows.

It's been a long time since I've been able to do any underwater photography. It's been even longer since I've been exploring the oceans of Hawai'i.
This was one of the most incredible experiences I've ever had. Not far off the coast of North Shore in Oahu I dove down and discovered at least 5 sea turtles relaxing together. They didn't seem to mind my presence, though I kept some distance out of respect. A couple of times they approached me out of curiosity before drifting away again. It was absolutely breath taking!
I miss diving deep into the depths of the ocean and drifting on the surface above teams of fish in colorful coral. There's something so peaceful and otherworldly about the ocean. Maybe if I'm very fortunate, someday I can afford an underwater camera and share that world even more! But until now, I am content for any chance I get to rejoin the aquatic world and let the ocean waves carry me.
