Root | 200 Julia Street NOLA 70130
$11 | Fried Chicken Noodle Soup Grilled Brussels Sprouts, Roasted Shiitakes, Heirloom Carrots, Hazelnut Conchiglie Pasta, Dill
When times get rough or cold, who wouldn’t go for some chicken soup, right?
One of our favorite items on the beginnings gastro menu, the #FriedChickenNoodleSoup cranked up the taste profile of bold broth flavor and bright texture.
Each spoon full was compact with fresh micro greens (mini roasted parsnips, dill), pulled salty fried chicken and unbeatable, hands-down the best stock our tummy has grumbled upon thus far.
Chef and Co-Owner, Phillip Lopez alongside General Manager Maximilian Ortiz and Pastry Chef Blake Abene make up this unique staff of gastro-centric menu options; from Foie Gras “Living Terrarium” where they create a dip n’dot experience for the experienced food addict at heart.
For dinner, we recommend the Principal Vadouvan Scallops Roasted Parsnips, Confit White Asparagus, Preserved Lemon, White Asparagus Vichyssoise: $28 - this luscious meal is served in an actual cigar box where the U-10 scallops are complimented with the spicy notes of cigars... we left in awe. Thanks guys!
In addition, we sipped on the Donkey & Goat “Claim Jumper” Rosé, El Dorado, California 2014: $11 - we asked GM Max about the unusual taste and he stated this particular wine is unfiltered, hence the bitter notes and sediment in our glass. It was grand!
OpenTable if you get the chance, especially during the holidays or special events around supper time. Easy seating during lunch --makes for a great place to slap into on a lunch break. Don’t forget about the charchurie boards, they are quite exceptional!
Eat on,
- Food Critic USA
Thanks to all who are currently serving our fine Country and kudos to members of military families! We learned Chef Lopez comes from a military family background and are proud to support his restaurant endeavors across the USA!

Willa Jean | A Besh Restaurant Group | 611 O’Keefe Ave | New Orleans, LA
$13 | Griddled Meatloaf Sandwich | tomato jam, crispy onions, onion roll
$11 | Roasted Beet Salad | arugula, pistachio, citrus, goat cheese vinaigrette
Showcasing John Besh’s top pastry chefs, Lisa White and Kelly Fields, this homey bakeshop offers more than just biscuits and coffee program, let alone adult beverages found anywhere New Orleans...
The lunch scene surprised us as we noticed the defined amount of mid 30′s-40′s female restauranteurs on their busy lunch breaks taking advantage of the excellent menu options and prices.
Featured above, we tried the Griddled Meatloaf Sandwich and the Roasted Beet Salad. Here’s the breakdown...
Meatloaf Sandwich: Extremely salty and greasy, however there was no beating the fresh in-house onion bun to sop up the savoriness. To-go box please!
Beet Salad: Lots of beets and not so much greens. This was a very soggy, acidic dish and proved to be overdressed for the occasion.
Best to use OpenTable for reservations the day before or call day of for faster seating. Prepare to elevate your conversations, no acoustics to bounce the sound around with lots of laughs and plates clinking from the kitchen.

The Ruby Slipper Cafe | 200 Magazine Street | CBD | New Orleans, LA
$10 | BL2T Bacon, Lettuce Two Tomatoes!
Count on a warm and friendly welcome as you enter The Ruby Slipper Cafe anytime of day! One of four local destinations in NoLa, The Ruby Slipper makes for a place to indulge upon some Bloody Mary’s and exceptional home cooked meals.
We tried out the BL2T which was grilled to perfection, or at least we thought so! The Brioche toast was buttery, crisp and packed a duo punch from the local juicy beef steak and fried green tomatoes with a touch of feathery mixed greens to cap it off. Served with a navy bean salad. Excellent service with immediate seating!
Give their online menu a read and stop in to their new Pensacola, Florida location: http://www.therubyslippercafe.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/NewMenuFront10_2015_hires.pdf

Blue Fugu Hibachi & Sushi Bar | St. Pete Beach, Florida
$14 | 6 Piece California Roll | 4 Piece Assorted Nigeri $5.75 | Ikura “Salmon Roe”
Blue Fugu, nestled in the Dolphin Village Shopping Center in St. Pete Beach, Florida is the only Hibachi Grill on the beach, so there isn't really much to complain about. Although, this place reminded us how dining out was like in the 80's. Walking in was very awkward, right down to over decorated walls with t-shirts hanging from the ceiling on wire hangers. Aside from the esthetics, it was strange set up overall; to the left of the door way was the hibachi grill area, straight ahead was the sushi bar and to the right, was the bar. Let's just say, there was nothing feng shui about the place.
No complaints really. The presentation was beautiful and the fish was fresh, however the Ikura was not so fresh.
The service was excellent although they seemed to be a bit overwhelmed with only 20 or so patrons. My partner had their meal misread and was served the wrong dinner. It was a maze to try to navigate to the restroom and we question the quality and cleanliness factors that come out of the kitchen. Blue Fugu is a really nice establishment, it just could use a serious modern update and a deep conditioning bath. --FoodCriticUSA.com

Del Frisco’s Tampa
$15 | Tuna Tartar Tacos | Appetizer
| Received four tacos in a “taco holder” which made eating very manageable. Found the spicy mayo unnecessary; didn’t see the need if they were already using avocado (acts as a healthy alternative to mayo). Could’ve spiced up the avocado into a spicy guacamole to amplify the natural flavor of the tuna. The tuna could’ve used some salt and or capers to complete this appetizer. -- FoodCriticUSA.com
