Find a corset that fits. Sewed the front clasp closed. Added on about an inch of fabric to the top since I didn't like how low cut it was.

(Not pictured here because I forgot to take a photo). Painted the corset with watered down acrylics. Mostly a light blue base, that way anything not covered with sequins would look okay. (You can use watered down acrylics and it wont crack. )

Get mylar sheets and cut into desired rectangles. Super glue for plastic is a must but needs to be used IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA. Im serious, some of them use toluene. Get a mask, work outside. Dont do this indoors!

Layer to your hearts content.

Elsa wig tutorial pt 2

Lets spike it like its the 90's and we have no regrets.

I went through and devoted three layers to her spikes. One on top and two for the bottom to make it look more layered. The wig itself had A LOT of short wefts that didn't make it into my braid. This translates well to styling Elsa's titanium chrome dome. Spiking is so easy compared to braiding. Back brush the base, blast it with that hair spray and then pin to dry.

For added umpf you could curl the base of the spikes but I was too lazy at this point for that. I let the full back layer set up overnight.

The blue pin marks the middle line from her widows peak to the Back of the wig. It was a reference point I needed while spiking.

Next came managing her magical side burns.

This wig had very long sideburns. Back brush + blasted the hair spray like no tomorrow to get them to stay up. Tapper them into wisps at the ends was challenging.

Tip: don't misplace your hair scissors.

And last tip is don't actually blast the wig until the wefts look like spaghetti noodles. If that happens grab a damp rag and gently run it of the fibers to take some spray out. Let it dry and then restyle.

Elsa wig tutorial part 1

Warning ya now it's gonna be a long post.

Supplies:

Base wig is Suzi Classic - Arda wigs, color titanium

Long wefts - Arda, color ash blonde

Got2b glued hair spray - walmart

Beyond the zone freezing setting spray - Sally beauty supply

Styling comb

Curler comb (? Proper name? Idk)

Shit ton of patience

Bobbypins and hair ties

Detangler spray

Head stand

First off I started by trimming off the excess mesh and shaping the front hair line. I think one thing that really helps with lace fronts is taking your own hairline consideration. If some thing is drastically different it might look bad with your face shape.

Unless your cosplay make up skills are waaaay better than mine which is most everyone I meet. The contour skills elude me -.-

I sectioned out the hair into layers starting 1/3 from the front. I layered 2 to 3 wefts over one another and then sewed that into the base wig. The very bottom of the wig base though I ended up sewing 5 to 6 in because I had so much. When all was said and done I still had 2 pieces left over.

Don't leave hair wefts out when cats are around. Just dont.

Brush it all out once everything is in place. Keeping it sectioned off really helps the tangles. If you're unsure how to braid a wig this would be the best time for practicing. It can take several attempts. I was comfortable after 8, if you need a braiding tutorial I would recommend YouTube.

At the end of my third de-tangling session (since I don't own a flat iron) I borrowed a heat comb (wtf are these called?) And gently passed it through the sectioned pieces to iron out kinks that had started to form.

There is going to be a very long tail on this one. I tried it on after estimating where I wanted it to end to make sure that it would be at the right length for me. It was actually waaaay too long the first time and I had to undo some and move the tie up.

Before snipping the ends I "pancaked" the braid and fluffed it up some. This is pretty important because if you cut something off before teasing it out you can end up pulling sections out of the hair tie. The subtle ash in the braid starts to show when braiding and looks more realistic in my opinion. Hair is never one solid color, I like wigs that have mixed fibers even when looking at anime wigs.

To make the tail more puff shaped don't lop it off in one cut! I layered it after giving it a base v-shape. Uhh I'm kinda bad at layering so hit up Pinterest or the 'Tube again. I barely taught it to myself.

Stupid boy. You can never use too much hair spray.

Don't forget to spray both sides! The side that sits against you will get extremely matted and tangled so nip that problem in the bud by taking care of the backside of the braid.

Lets Talk Tension

For all my fellow cosplay addicts out there sewing is a big challenge. Either it’s finding the right pattern (or cobbling two together) or pursuing just the right fabric. The Last thing you need is a sewing machine giving you grief. So! If you have already

Matched threads in bobbin and spool

Swapped plastic bobbin for metal (this does make enough of a difference for me on my temperamental brother cs machine)

Ramped top tension to and fro with little to no change

Swapped out threads for higher quality to no avail. (More important with finer materials!)

Done all this and your bobbin tension is still too high? This post is for you. Cause all the signs are pointing to bobbin tension being off and let me tell you.

She’s a bitch.

This little black housing at the bottom will have a VERY small screw on it that controls the tension on the bobbin thread. Getting to it is easy, but if your an idiot like me you dismantled the thing to take a peek at the interior of my machine before figuring out that wasn’t necessary.

Such pretty interior 😍 look at all those wires.

I cleaned out the fiber fluff while I was in there and put it back together.

My brother machine had a plastic cover over the black housing that slide off with a gentle pop. I pulled the bobbin and black housing out and viola. This little screw is the demon inside of your machine.

^FOLLOW THESE RULES^

My tension was too high. So I loosened it with a small #0 screwdriver. You will need this or a 5/64 flathead will suffice. Start with half turns. Again HALF TURNS. I did two or three full revolutions and wound up with this:

My top tension setting is set at 4, to maintain consistency. I went up by half turns and got somewhere in the right range.

It goes from right to left as slightly too tight to increasingly too loose. Extending your stitch helps too, at least with diagnosing tension problems.

I overshot my goal and stripped out the screw in the process. So I’m off to find the smallest repair screw in the world. I’ve ruined too much fabric before I started messing with the bobbin tension and I’m determined to get it right.
