Can we talk about the different ways Solas reacts to Lavellan after he breaks up with her???
No matter what, he has the last line in the scene and says “I’m sorry,” but the way he walks away is so different depending on what emotion she approaches the situation with.
Tumblr media
Like when she begs him not to go and reaches for him, he backs away because he doesn’t know if he can handle her touching him again. He turns and he walks away quickly, not giving himself an option to change his mind. Because if he does, if he lets her catch him, he may give up his whole mission just to be with her.
Tumblr media
But when she’s matter-of-fact and just straight up tells him he hurt her, with no pleading to stay and no lashing out, he turns and walks away with his head down. He’s carrying even more shame on his shoulders, this is just one more thing that’s his fault. One more person he’s hurt.
Tumblr media
And when she’s angry he allows her to hit him, he just stands there and takes it. Because these touches aren’t kind, they won’t lure him back in. They’re pushing him further away. He feels like he deserves it and like he doesn’t deserve her, so he stands there and watches his one shot at being happy walk away.

the river mermaid
Maddie was 14, bright eyed and adventurous. She made her way down the river, hopping on the dry rocks that peaked out of the shallow water, her younger sister Katie not far behind. The full moon illuminated the small shrubs and trees along the river giving Maddie plenty of light to see where she was going. The warm summer air made the evening quite pleasant. Absence of wind allowed for the sound of crickets and frogs to be heard as they continued down the river, the water getting higher and higher. As they walked, they slowly moved to walk on the river bank, tiptoeing as quietly as they could.
Maddie and Katie’s grandfather had told them about the mermaid that lived in the river. He had said where the mountain hugs the river, there is a round rock that looks like it can be pulled out of the wall. The river is the deepest there and only when the water is high enough to cover enough of the rock, the mermaid emerges. She sings beautiful melodies and animals gather to listen, mesmerized by her song. Once an animal is close enough she grabs them and drags them down beneath the river. Maddie remembered shuddering at the thought of a poor animal being drowned. Her grandfather had told her that the animals were the mermaids food and that she was very hungry from not being able to leave the cave until the water was high enough. Maddie still did not like the idea of animals being murdered but thought that the story must be well, just a story. That is why on this particular evening she decided to come take a look for herself to see if she wanted to believe this silly story her grandfather had told her.
Katie now walking tightly behind Maddie as not to lose her behind the reeds and bushes grabbed Maddie’s hand. “What?”, whispered Maddie not expecting to be grabbed so tightly. “Do you hear that?”, Katie said. They both held their breathe and listened intently to the noises around them. In the distance a hum of a light melodic tune could be heard. The tune almost sounded like a harp playing but lighter, almost as if it were a dream. “That!”, whispered Katie anxiously as she stared at Maddie wide eyed. “Okay, be quiet. Lets get closer”, Maddie replied feeling very anxious and excited at the same time.
Katie was now holding Maddie’s hand very tightly, while they both crept as silently as they could towards the humming. They peeked over the bushes, relatively sheltered by the trees surrounding them. Sure enough on the opposite side of the river they noticed the round rock, pushed to the side, revealing a large cave. The cave was pitch black, no light shone into it even with the full moon being so bright. The water was very high, a little less than halfway covering the opening of the cave. In the middle, where the water looked the deepest, a woman swam. Her long golden hair covering her chest. She was singing a song, the words of which were unknown to Maddie and Katie and sounded like a song within a song to them.
Maddie and Katie looked at each other in shock and amazement. “Are you seeing what I’m seeing?”, said Maddie as she grabbed Katie’s hand a little tighter. “Y-yes”, the word stumbled out of Katie’s mouth. They continued to stare at the sight of what they were now convinced was a mermaid, trying to get a glimpse of her tail.
Animals of all shapes and sizes had gathered against the riverbank near the cave. There were, deer, mice, rabbits, porcupines, snakes and foxes. Owls sat perched in the trees listening closely to the singing. Some of the animals began to wade deeper and deeper into the water. Once or twice, as if waking up from a trance, a animal would go berserk, as if realizing it is being chased by a lion, and sprint away.
A deer was deep in the water, an arms length away from the woman, who was still singing very happily. It waded deeper and deeper until the woman was close enough. She began lovingly stroking its pelt. Then in a blink of an eye, she had grabbed the deer around the neck and pulled it to the center of the river. The water was black underneath her, the moonlight couldn't break through the depth of the water. The moment she had grabbed the deer she had stopped singing. The other animals had fled for their lives in that moment, not a single one remained. There was no wind, it was dead silent. Even the crickets and frogs had stopped singing. The air became cool, and Maddie and Katie felt a tickle down their spine. The next instant there was a splash of water, the moonlight illuminated a dark green iridescent mermaid tail that broke the water just as the mermaid dived into the darkness of the river, dragging the helpless deer with her. A few bubbles trickled to the surface of the water and then nothing.
Maddie and Katie waited in anticipation as to what would happen next, frozen in place staring at the river with fear. A few minutes passed, and seeing no mermaid they decided it was time to leave. Exactly as they were about to leave, the mermaid gracefully emerged from the river, swimming towards a rock. There was no sign of the deer, no blood, nothing. It was as if it had vanished. They watched the mermaid as she lifted herself out of the water to bath in the moonlight. Her tail glistened, as she sat and combed her hair with what looked like a comb made of bones.
“I think it’s time to leave, before she spots us”, Maddie said looking at Katie a little panicked. Katie nodded and replied, “I think that’s a good idea”, then pulled Maddie by the hand as they made their way quickly down the river. They stepped ever so quietly as to not alert the mermaid, who began to hum again. Once the humming had become quite distant, Maddie and Katie hand in hand started sprinting together. They ran and ran, until they reached home. The farmhouse was welcoming seeing the lights burning brightly through the windows.
Maddie and Katie climbed into bed and looked at each other from across the room. “We saw a mermaid. A real live mermaid!”, Katie whispered. “I know replied Maddie. “I thought grandpa was joking”. “I did too”, said Katie. “Do you think the story of the dwarf is true then too Maddie?”. "I guess we’ll have to see tomorrow evening Katie, goodnight”, said Maddie, and they both drifted off to sleep.

Solas returns
Lavellan carefully inspects herself in the mirror, making sure nothing is out of place. Her ashen hair neatly tied up in a french braid tucked with flowers. A festival is being held in the emerald forest by the dalish, and it is important that the inquisitor attends. “Are you ready for this silly elfy thing Herald?”, chimes a voice from behind. Lavellan turns around and laughs at the remark as she walks over to greet her friend. Sera is leaning against the stone wall near the steps of the inquisitors chambers. She is dressed in her signature red outfit, her bow resting on her back accompanied by her quiver of arrows.  “Nice outfit”, says Sera. Lavellan was wearing a light green dalish outfit, that fitted perfectly around her thin waist, the sleeve folded up where her hand and the mark once was. “Thanks”, the Lavellan replied, giving Sera a half grin.
Lavellan and Sera made their way to the gates of Skyhold where they met with Iron Bull and Cassandra before they departed to the Emerald forest. It was already dark when they arrived at the festival. There were fairy lights everywhere that lit up the whole grove. There were elves dancing and singing and laughter and joy filled the air. Wonderfully scented smells came from every direction. Tables were decked with candles, fruits, meats, cheeses and wine. Iron Bull and Sera immediately proceeded to tasting all the different wines together. Pillows and furs were placed on the ground around the tables. Cassandra found a cosy spot to read one of Varrics books, probably in one of the caravans or tents that encircled the entire grove. Many fireplaces could be seen where food was carefully being prepared.
Lavellan was surprised when no one seemed to take note of her arrival. Relieved that no one would notice if she slipped away, she made her way to the edge of the grove where she sat on the grass and gazed up at the stars and full moon. Even with all the joy that was the festival, she felt sad. She missed him, Solas, Fen’Harel, whatever he called himself. “Ma harel lasa”, she whispered to herself as her eyes filled with tears.  “Vhenan”, the word echoed inside her head. Did she hear that? Where did it come from? “Vhenan!”, the word louder this time. Lavellan jumped to her feet, her eyes scanning the forest. She didn’t need a weapon, she was a mage. Her hand started glowing with purple electricity as she got ready for something to happen. Behind her the party continued, oblivious to her absence.
In front of her in the distance the moonlight irradiated a white wolf. Lavellan, frozen in place stared at the sight. The wolf realising it had been seen, moved quickly back into the forest. Lavellan, immediately started running as fast as she could after the wolf. Deeper into the emerald forest, the trees became thicker until most of the stars couldn’t be seen anymore. Out of breathe, and no longer having the wolf in her sights she fell to the forest floor in a pool of tears.
A few minutes passed as the Lavellan collected herself and stood up. Exhausted she turned around to return the way she came, and a figure emerged from the darkness into the moonlight. “Ir abelas, vhenan”, Solas said as he slowly walked towards her. She stared in astonishment, wondering whether she was in the fade and this was all a dream. “I have a gift for you”, he said as he walked up to her, leaving almost no space between them. She stood staring at him, still not knowing what to do or say, her mind completely blank. He gently brushed a dangling hair that had fallen from her plait behind her ear as he whispered, “I am very sorry, my heart”. Lavellan, finally feeling something looked deep into his eyes. He could see her pain and he felt it too, that is why he returned. She looked at him longingly and said with sadness in her heart “why have you come?". He carefully lifted up her arm where the mark once was and unfolded the material to touch her skin. His eyes once again met hers as they glowed with a flash of light. She looked down, amazed to find that she had a hand once more. “Thank you Solas. Ir tel’him”, she said gratefully placing her hand on his cheek. “Ar lath ma, vhenan. I should have never left”, Solas said full of sorrow. A tear ran down his cheek and Lavellan lightly brushed it away with her thumb. “It’s okay”, she replied meeting his gaze. “I will never leave you again, I promise”, he said suddenly grabbing her by the waist as he pulled her tightly against his muscular body. She closed her eyes as their lips met in a passionate kiss. She wrapped her arm around his neck and kissed him, letting go of all her heartache, knowing that she had received her happy ending. "Ar lath ma”, she whispered to him. "I love you too my heart", he replied.

fairytale
Fairytales. We all love them. We all want our lives to be one. Riding a unicorn through emerald green forests, trees so large they seem touch the stars. A cottage tucked away in the woods or better yet a large castle. A castle with an endless labyrinth of staircases leading to anywhere and everywhere, rooms, towers, secret passages, and corners where no one could find you. A safe space, to dream your biggest dreams and fear your biggest fears. That one room, behind the bookshelf, where you would pull a book or lamp scone just the right way, so the bookshelf gives way to a beautifully lit room full of hope, joy, excitement and mystery.
A large window overlooks a great waterfall to the right that twinkles in the moonlight. Beyond to the left, tall emerald trees which seem tiny from so high up. Mountains, glorious, marvelously huge mountains wrap around the forest and follow the river to the great waterfall. The crashing of this waterfall is fierce and loud but also calming, almost like the waves of the sea. Strange how the violent, loud and crashing water seems less threatening from behind the window, inside the cosy room. The lit fireplace is warm and welcoming. You lie down wrapped in white fur blankets by the fireplace. You close your eyes and think of strawberries covered in chocolate, wine, cheese and plenty of other picnic treats. Suddenly you hear a slight clicking sound, almost like a cricket but gentler. You open your eyes and see tiny little fairies fluttering above you. Magical fireflies have lit up the room in a rainbow of colours. The fairies float down gently and place a necklace around your neck. A beautiful small gem of glowing blue hangs on the chain. Inside your head you hear the words “dream”. You close your eyes once more think of the perfect picnic. Your skin tingles and you suddenly smell pine and hear birds chirping. As you open your eyes you behold a spectacular picnic with enough food to feed a small village. There are animals everywhere. Cute birds, bunnies, a fox that sitting next to you, patiently waiting for a piece of food. You feel like a Disney princess.
Suddenly you feel awfully sleepy and lie down drifting swiftly off to sleep. You wake up in your own bed at home, realising it was nothing but a dream.
You feel for the necklace at your chest and are shocked to find it still dangling around your neck. Was it a dream?
Real life is a fairytale, you’ve just got to dream to make it real.
