Once upon a time, before the times of Social Distancing at Gardens By The Bay Singapore. It was one of those evenings when it was drizzling on and off. I have been to the Gardens by the bay a few times before and wanted to capture something different. But all the rains did not reduce the crowds for the Sound and Light show that happens at the Gardens By the bay. As I wanted to reach my hotel back, I decided to walk back before the show ended. As I was crossing the bridge I looked back to have a glance at the last of the lights for the show. That is when I decided to stop for a moment, set up my tripod and take this image. The crowds busy taking videos of the show, the sluggish clouds, and the languid branches of Gulmohur,with no interest in providing shelter from the rain. Yet people jostled with each other to find an inch of space under the moving canopy. Everything looked surreal and I learned sometimes you need to get out of the scene to understand the scene. The country is in lockdown as we fight with the pandemic caused by the Corona Virus. Hopefully, soon things will be better, till that time please bear the hardships. And just to clarify not being able to go for your gym session is not a problem, not getting your favorite brand of Coffee is not a hardship. Slow bandwidth from your ISP during a conference call with a client in the US of A is not a bad day. ⠀ No matter what you may say and how you may justify ( boredom, creativity, community building) if you & I have the luxury to accept various social media challenges we just don't have the concept of what a CHALLENGE is. ⠀ OK, enough of my Gyan, please feel free to disagree with me. ⠀ Let us focus on Sharma Brothers.⠀ Today's image is of Sharma Brothers from the quaint village of Garli in Kangra Himachal Pradesh. They run a small tailor shop in the village and do repair work or the odd school dress as people just don't come to a tailor shop to get new clothes stitched. My last trip of 2019 was to #mandufestival Mandu, on invitation of the good folks of @mptourism . It was a good trrip except on day one itself the clumsy me broke my DSLR. But that is a story for another time and place. While there are many things that I loved about the festival from music concerts to local arts and crafts to hot air balloon rides whatI am really impressed is that Mandu Festival besides art, culture, music, momuments and food was also a celebration of the unique tree #baobab. If you read my blogbyou will know what a magical tree the Baobab is. Brought to India by wandering friars Mand[ has the largest cocentration of #baobabs in India. Locally called Khorsani Imli ( imli = Tamarind), as per folklore the Khilji army was given Baobab fruits as part of ration to be used in case if emergency when water was not available as the fruit has many medicinal properties and can quench thirst for hours. Mandu has Baobab trees growing near monuments, in fields, in jungle and almoost everywhere you go younwill find this magical tree that defies convention. A very happy new year 2020 to all the readers of desi Traveler.⠀ For the January 2020 Wallpaper Calendar, I am sharing an image of Thiksey Monastery #Ladadkh,. Thiksey Monastery stands tall at the banks of Indus, the river that gives name to our country India.⠀ An impressive 12 storied structure, Thiksey is said to be resembling the Patola Palace in Lhasa Tibet. Well, I have been outside Thiksey a few times but could never go really inside the monastery, even this time as I had just started climbing it started to rain and we had to abandon our climb and get back. Legend has it that Siddhartha meditated under a #Bodhi tree before he got enlightened. Visited the Buddhist Gompa in #Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. I am here to attend @arunachallaf a great initiave to bring various art forms like Poetry, writing, Painting etc on a common stage and have meaningful convesation for promotion of arts. . . . . . Most of the landscape in #Ladakh is barren, there is hardly a blade of grass leave aside a tree. Azure and ashy brown dominate everywhere. But then you see the people of Ladakh and you instantly realise that they love colors. From the beautful clothes they weave to the colorful decoration in every aspect of Ladakhi life and you learn to appreciate the colors of Ladakh. Take for example this large Prayer wheel, that is colorfuly painted with golden motifs and the shelter in which it stands has bold red, yellow, orange & green. Your eyes are open but you are not sure if you have woken up or if the dream is still continuing. For the morning rays of Sun are enacting a dance drama on the wall opposite your bed. You try to figure out what is happening. It turns out that the kaleidoscopic dance drama on your room's wall is thanks to the Eastman color window glass that is partly inspired by rainbow on the distant mountains and part from the Himalayan flowers that find a way to mesmerize you every time you see them. You want to go back to your dream but you realize time is of the essence, for the dance of the sunrays is on the borrowed time a la Cinderella, with the clock ticking, so you quickly grab your camera, and click like there is no tomorrow.
