A very happy new year 2020 to all the readers of desi Traveler.⠀ For the January 2020 Wallpaper Calendar, I am sharing an image of Thiksey Monastery #Ladadkh,. Thiksey Monastery stands tall at the banks of Indus, the river that gives name to our country India.⠀ An impressive 12 storied structure, Thiksey is said to be resembling the Patola Palace in Lhasa Tibet. Well, I have been outside Thiksey a few times but could never go really inside the monastery, even this time as I had just started climbing it started to rain and we had to abandon our climb and get back. Travelers, there is no path, paths are made by walking..... Antonio Machado⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Villages in #Ladakh are far from each other. Most people walk to the nearest road, which could be a few KM, few days or as the case is in winters a few months away. So most people walk as they don't have the luxury of Metro, cars, bikes etc. in the villages. Light is in abundance in #Ladakh & mostly it is at times blindingly strong. But the strong light also gives you some good phototraphic oppurtunities like this image I clicked as i was climbing to Shey Monastery. On the banks of Indus, stands tall the Shey Monastery & Palace complex. It is here you find the second largest indoor Buddha statue in Ladakh region.The statue made of golded copper & gold is a sight to behold. Once upon a time Turtuk was part of the Central Asian Baltistan empire, then in 1971 there was a war between India & Pakistan, while most of us are aware of forming of Bangladesh few know that Turtuk became part of India during same war. Turtuk is so remote that there is not even a dhaba on the way. Any guesses who serves food / drinks to the tired travelers on the way to Turtuk ? ⠀ In Turtuk you can clearly notice central asian features on the residents faces. The kids are shy & reluctant to get clicked, but in this case the mom of these kids was only too happy to let us click them, but only after she has hidden behind the door to avoid our camera :) Do you want more of Turtuk stories ? Old saying > Don't be a Gama, in the land of Lama.⠀ Just as an FYI: Gama jee was a famous pehelwan. But in the rarified air of Ladakh you need to take each step carefully specially during the first 48 hours when your body acclimatise to the low oxygen atmosphere. We just went to Shanti Stupa in evening on our first day in Leh. That is where I met this kind Lama jee and clicked him with the Shanti Stupa.⠀ This is the first image of the day from #Leh the biggest city in #Ladakh. No Leh and Ladakh are not the same. Leh is the city, Ladakh is the region in the stage of Jammu and Kashmir. Some of the other prominent places in Ladakh region are Diskit, Hunder, Siachin Glacier, Turtuk... this last one is very interesting as it became part of India only in 1971 before that it was a part of Pakistan.
