I decided to draw Susan from El Goonish Shive www.egscomics.com/ Why? It's difficult to say. I wanted to branch out and experiment a bit. I have always been very envious of the smoothness of Dan Shive's linework. He said once, somewhere, that he uses Illustrator while habitually I use photoshop so I decided to experiment a bit with Photoshop's sister program. The linework is incredibly smooth but it has a number of irritating factors which makes me doubt I would use it regularly. The characters of Jayden and Crusader have designs that thrive on the loose brushwork of photoshop. It is harder to vary the line width in illustrator, as the program automatically smoothes it out and the interface feels like fighting constantly with a scared pigeon. However this did give me a very nice finished result, at least in my opinion. Branching into someone else's style is difficult and I think I pulled it off quite well. Susan does not look 100% like someone who would wander into a J&C page, but she also doesn't look like Dan Shive's work. It came off looking a lot more like Dan Shive's Susan than my previous attempt though Why Susan would look like this? Not sure. Perhaps this is an alternate universe where she joined a gang and wields the hammers for vain profit. Perhaps she is hanging around waiting for sexist remarks to occur so she can hammer people to death with it. I am not entirely sure. I had fun though, and that's the important bit.
