As you know I love your fic rec lists. (And your fics) I'm always thrilled to find "older" Johnlock fics--from 2010 to 2014--and wonder whether you have already made up a list of classic favorites. I've seen the top-26 list, for example. Just wondered if you had ever focused on the early Johnlock. Thank you so much for all your generosity.

I must start by saying HOOO BOY is there alot of great fanfic from the early years. I am putting together a hit or miss selection of fics I enjoyed from older words in the fandom, but this is by no means an exhaustive list. Whenever I try to put together a “classics you should have read” list someone yells at me. ;)

We get to see the two mature together through John’s drinkingand troubled home life, and Sherlock’s drug use and shady dealings. Lots ofangst and violence, great plot and characters and smut. Some great newcharacters appear as John’s flatmates, particularly Andrew Harrison. Thumbs up.

TheFirst and Last Trilogy by Phyona. A night at the pub with drinking gamesleads to John waking up in Sherlock’s bed wondering WTF happened. A fever leadsto some sweet sick!fic and hot times in bed. A trip together helps them cementthis budding relationship.

TheParadox series by Wordstrings. Sherlock POV. Crazy!lock. A crawl throughSherlock’s odd brain as he and John connect. BDSM, blood sharing, kink and allkinds of crazy. Dream sharing. Brilliantand bizarre. Sweet in the creepiest of ways. What is sane, what is real, whatis love? This turns it all inside out in the most profound of ways. Wow.

TheRoad Trip series by stupid_drawings. Crack!fic – absolutely LMFAO, ROTFstuff. Sherlock and John go on a road trip to solve a crime with Lestrade, thenothers of the police force. The last fic ends with some pretty heavy angst butI just pretend that “what to do when your flatmate is homicidal” is a sequel.

What to do When Your Flatmateis Homicidal byhyacinth_sky747, 58 k, explicit. This work is divine silliness. Through astream of consciousness from Sherlock ostensibly writing in a diary, we see thelives of John and Sherlock as they build a relationship together amidst theinsanity that is John and Sherlock. Thiswork is sweet, weird, sexy, adorable and addictive with lots of fluff, butbeware the bit of angst slipped in.

The Progress ofSherlock Holmes by ivyblossom, 62 k, explicit. Sherlock POV well done. Sherlock and John fumble, andJohn leaves to marry Mary though Sherlock knows she will cheat. John and Marysettle on a rocky, open relationship, and slowly John and Sherlock find theirway back together. Feels so in character with love, sex, and angst, angst,angst.

ElectricPink Hand Grenade byBeautifulFiction, 67 k, explicit. Sherlock suffers cluster headaches that leadto synesthesia, and John nurses him through it. Snuggles ensue.

CooperativePrinciple by bendingsignpost, 56 k,explicit. Slight AU. A very angsty,mind-fuckery courtship between John, a teacher at St. Barts, and the elusive,cunning consulting detective who wants him. Some porn, and lots of angst. Did Imention angst?

The Road Less Traveled by verityburns, 56 k, mature. Mycroft inspires Sherlock to start ProjectRetention - make John fall in love with Sherlock so he doesn’t marry somestupid woman and move away. Much angst, but fluff and smut too. Very sweet.

NorthwestPassage by Kryptaria, 95 k, explicit. AU – John is retired from the Canadian armyliving in an isolated homestead. An oldmilitary connection, Mycroft Holmes, calls in a favor. He must house hisyounger brother Sherlock while he detoxes from drugs. BAMF!John, PTSD, hunting,flirting and sex – oh my.

There’sA First Time For Everything bykate_lear, 21 k, explicit. Wonderful background info on John andSherlock’s past as they negotiate a casual sexual relationship and tiptoetoward a committed one. Hurtfic and violence, romance and porn. Has a 3Garridebs moment as John bleeds in an alley. This is a GOOD one!

Maybe series by mildredandbobbin – 3 parts. Almostheartbreaking angst. Post Reichenbach. Sherlockat large checks in with Molly and hears that John’s pregnant wife Mary died ina car accident six months earlier. Sherlock realizes John is not okay, anddecides to return. It’s very believable as they pick up the pieces and build abeautiful life together. (locked to AO3 users)

TheCold Song Series (6 parts) by Eldritchhorrors. Edgy, BDSM, druguse, scary, amazing. Casefic. Much is explained about Sherlock when we find outhis childhood was shattered by a serial killer taking a family member. Now, thekiller is striking again, and Sherlock must deal with things long locked awayto solve the case. Sherlock only accesses his emotions through music, but aBDSM relationship with John that is moving from sex into love is healingSherlock in ways he can’t comprehend. Philosophy, Buddhism, knife play, operaas metaphor – a heady mix of crazy and sublime.

The Bang and The Clatter by earlgreytea68, 137 k, mature. DelightfulAU with John and Sherlock as baseball players. Sherlock is a hot young pitcher,and John is an old catcher on his last year before retirement when they findthemselves together on a new team. Some plot, great character development,romance.

Ease Your Way into OccupiedSpaces by joolabee, 11k , explicit.Prescient version of series 3 posted before the series aired. An angsty,pining, infidelity fic that is beautiful in its pain. Told from Sherlock’s POV.

Against the Rest of the Worldby SilentAuror, 151 k, explicit.Sherlock escapes a cell in Turkey to return to London before he manages todestroy all of Moriarty’s network. John is engaged, but choses to come with himto complete the mission. Pre-relationship to relationship. Feels like a spynovel, achingly romantic.

Lacuna by coloredink, 15 k, explicit. Lacuna means ablank spot or missing piece. John is back in 221B after an accident that leaveshim with amnesia. He and Sherlock deepen their relationship, as John strugglesto regain his memory from Before.

ImaginesMorti series (2 parts) by SwissMiss. Set in a magical AU inwhich people’s life experiences spontaneously appear as tattoos on their skin.John and Sherlock grow to know each other until Sherlock must fake his deathvia Reichenbach.

Beauty Shot byMazarin221b, 4 k, explicit. Sally discovers some of Sherlock’s old modelingpictures - including the ad he did for Calvin Klein back in the 90s. Johnrecognizes that ad, oh, does he ever.

Nothing to Make a Song About by emmagrant01, 36 k, explicit. When Sherlockreturned from his faked death, John could not forgive him for the deception andbroke off their friendship. Ten years later, John returns to London in searchof yet another new beginning. Sherlock, not surprisingly, is waiting.

The Speed of Objects in Motion by holyfant, 48 k word,explicit. This story is an exquisitemulti-year sweeping epic drama of John and Sherlock getting together, breakingup, but always orbiting each other in all that they do. So well written, with tons of angst, but light at the end of the tunnel. SO MUCH ANGST.

demon o’ mine part 2

Not only did I wake up with a real migraine this time,I woke up with a sobbing noah on my lap. Not the most welcoming experience I've ever had. Not only is someone sobbing on me,I have no idea how to deal with a crying person.

“Uhhhh noah?” listen i don't know what to say to her i don't even know why she's crying right now so this is the best i've got.

“Oh thank you, Lucie, you're alive!” She thought I was dead?

“No, just in pain and… wet? Noah what the hell?”

“I uhh tried to wake you up by pouring some water on your face… it didn't work” oh,For the love of…

“So you just decided I was dead and moved on to grieving?”

“Uh yes I did move on to grieving, how would I live without my girlfriend?”

I literally can't with her like ever

“Ok nawt your girlfriend, did you even check my pulse?”

“I didnt think about checking your pulse….i will admit I got a little carried away.”

It's like she ignores me every time i say something about not being her girlfriend

“Ok well help me up i have a migraine from satins buttcrack.”

She gives me a weird look almost like she's disgusted. Then I remember her dad's actually lucifer. I wouldn't want someone talking about my dad's ass crack, it would be weird though seeing as he's dead, but you know. She's snapping her fingers in front of my face. I must have gone off in my own little world, it happens more than I would like to admit.

“Sorry”

“You've got a free pass tonight, let's get you to bed shall we?”

“But I just woke up.”

“ Yeah,from knocking yourself out on the kitchen counter,you are going to bed.”

“ fine boss” it's best not to argue with her right now. She helps me up and decides I need help standing so she wraps an arm around my shoulders and while walking the slowest ive ever seen her walk, We head to my bedroom. When we reach my room she gently opens the door for me and helps me navigate my room.it's quite the mess but i don't want to deal with it. I was embarrassed with how messy it was when Noah started hanging around at first, but then she made a fool out of herself and now I wouldn't be embarrassed about anything in front of her.as we get close to the bed noah stops me a couple feet before the bed then She sweeps some crumbs off before taking my hands to guide me to the bed. i lay down then she pulls the covers over me.i thank her and just as i think i've finally rid the demon she turns around abruptly and does something she rarely ever does, she bends down, and kisses my forehead she then runs out the door with a barely there “goodnight”

i start to think about my situation, i mean noah would be such a good girlfriend if A, i actually liked her and b, if i wasn't so annoyed with her all the time. She could have any girl and she chose to take little ole me hostage. Maybe I should go to sleep before I think too much into this.

Im looking down on the rest of the world. It looks almost unreal. It's not even that I want to be here, it's that I have to be. I've hit rock bottom, I've hurt and lost the people I love .I can't take it back.

So of course I'm up here, on the edge ready to end it all. Why don't I,I know it's all downhill from here, literally. I remember when i was a kid i would sit for hours wondering why people would do this type of thing, i didn't understand the pain i have now the fear of the unknown goes away and the feeling of knowing shows through. Knowing that this life isn't for me, that this life keeds me out of it, this world needs the wronged to be righted, and I'm the wrong. I didn't know why people would give so much away with the act,if only I knew that now I have nothing to give so why not. Little me didn't know the pain in the world, the hurt and suffering. Little me was too hopeful in my opinion.

I hurt my friends while stewing in my suffering. I couldn't see past it to see that I was pushing everyone away. I pushed away my only friend. Now he's gone and now I'm alone and it's going to stay that way. I'm going to go the rest of eternity in a box somewhere alone, with only my thoughts. My life has burnt down. I'm just standing here in the ashes there's nowhere for me to go but down.

I close my eyes and imagine myself on the tallest building I can find. I'm there doing the same thing I'm doing here, there's one difference. There's a person at the bottom of the building, that person cares about me, that person loves me, that person is screaming for me to get down.

I almost start to wonder what that would be like. If my life would be any different. But i know it's pointless now i've already spent too much time on the edge. I don't know what's taking me so long. I have nothing keeping me here. I have nothing.just jump.no one asked for me here and no one wants me here. I just need to jump and take the last step…

Then I'm actually in the building. The sun is shining, but the wind is blowing. It's almost like a movie, a movie where the villain realizes the wrongs they've done and can't live to see the next day. If I wasn't clear enough, I'm the villain in this story. I decided to look down at the ground. But there's a person and I can't see them. They are almost blurry. Almost nonexistent like I'm not supposed to see them. I can hear them screaming but I can't hear what they are saying. But then all the sudden i see them i hear them, its noah screaming i love you at the top of her lungs while sobbing.

I wake up with a start. I never wanted to be there again. That was one of the worst days of my life. I don't even wanna try getting into why Noah was there telling me.. Those things. As I focus on the real world I hear Noah singing an odd variety of music. She listens to the weirdest shit I swear. It's not the genre per say, it's the odd mix in her playlist.it goes from bach to motionless in white..like who even does that. She's screaming the lyrics like a lunatic, she snot on the top of my list of “people i enjoy singing at 8AM” .and then i smell the bacon, she knows i hate bacon.the smell stays forever, i feel greasy, and i just can't think of the poor little pig dying. In fact the only meat I can stand to eat is chicken. I hate those fuckers, and no I'm not explaining why. Thats it im staying in bed this is officially a stand off. She can suck it. She walks in with a plate of bacon… to prove my point I flip away from the door and pull the covers over my head, she's not getting in this fortress. This is my blanket palace and she's not on the list to be let in.noah chuckles, walks over to the bed, and sits on the corner.she then aggressively yanks off the blanket and yells “up and attam short stack i made bacon”

I almost growl “ we both know i hate that shit” i know she does it to drive me up the wal

“Come onnn maxie its not bad” i don't even wanna see her sarcastic face right now.

“It's terrible and sad”

“Why oh why does maxie hate bacon it's one of the greatest creations”

“I think i actually hate you”

“Love you too, if you're not gonna eat this I'm gonna eat your half”.

“Your half is the biggest serving I've seen. What did you do to kill and eat a whole goddamn pig?”

‘No answer”

“Gross”

I go to stand to dramatically exit the room and trip on a t shirt and instead of falling I hear the plate of pig fall to the ground and feel warm arms grab me from behind.

“Don't go falling shortstack you just fell yesterday i cant keep going through that you clumsy ass i don't even understand how this keeps happening”

I go and rip out of her stupid grip, turn around and leave.i yell

“Suck it noah” behind me.

Todays gonna be a long day. I can feel it.

Not only had the day started off… annoying.. It had ended terribly too. Why not right? Why not add another terrible day to another terrible week to another terrible month.for starters i woke up with a migraine from hell. Literally from hell. That migraine's name is noah. Noah is well, A demon to start,an artist on weekends, florist, writer, and a part time pain in my ass. She is absolutely convinced we are dating. I wish I knew where the idea came from so I could exterminate it myself.

Noah had come into my life only a short year and a half ago when my dad died.I don't know why but I was convinced it was my fault. Long story short, i,with my unstable mental health and recent loss,ended up on a bridge looking down on the river ,teetering on the edge. Unfortunately for me as a part of a program made by lucifer himself, it turns out, you get an emotional support demon when you decide to take your own life.so, just as i was about to take my last step the one the only noah pain in my ass martsin gripped my arm and pulled me back over. Now i will admit my first thought was, hot damn this bitch is hot, physically and metaphorically, her hand felt like a seatbelt on a hot day. But her eyes were the most mesmerizing eyes I have ever seen. It was almost like her eyes were made out of a rainbow. Fitting seeing as she's literally the gayest person i have ever met. Her hair was the most beautiful shade of gray. It looks like a piece of metal in the best kind of way. I wish I could say it looks like a grandma's hair but I can't. It looks messy in a cute way and looks like it would be soft as hell. Her smile, oh my god her smile is literally the greatest thing i have ever seen even now i admit i can't keep the image of her smile out of my mind. After I came back to reality, you know what she said to me? She said and I quote “tuff crap short stack looks like you live another day” after that i haven't been able to stand her at all she's the most obnoxious person i have ever met. it.Never. Ends.

since i tried to unalive once im stuck with her until i die. I haven't seen a day without Noah martsin in a year and a half. I have never regretted anything more, which I guess is the point of this whole program. What is not a part of the program is Noah falling in love with the mentily unstable human and deciding to force said human to be her girlfriend. about six months ago she came home stating “we have a date to get to, so get a move on!” and proceeded to drag me along and take me to a very romantic dinner at Taco bell. At the time I didn't know she was serious, but now I realize she's as serious as a heart attack. Before you ask, yes I have informed Noah that that's not how it works here, not only does the person have to agree to a date with you, the person needs to be informed that you plan on dating them. She didn't care how I felt on the subject.

Now I'm waiting for this god damn movie to be over so she'll let me go so I can pee.she forgets im a human and that i still have a bladder. Not only do I have to pee but I swear to god I'm in a sauna. I wasn't kidding about the physically hot part. She feels like a pizza roll that didn't sit long enough so now you're trying to blow cool air on it so it can cool off whilst still in your mouth. Ok,so I'm being a little dramatic. She's not that warm,but that's not the point,the point is, if i don't get out of this demon's lap i'll go clinically insane.

“Noah let go”

“But babe it's just getting to the good part”

She has got to be kidding me.

“First of all not your babe second of all i have a bladder and need to pee plus your hot and it's the middle of summer”

She pauses the movie and shifts to face me a little better and starts to rub my arm up and down. Ok so i'll admit that is a perk to this insane situation, i have always been touch starved, my family wasn't ever the touchy feely type the most affection i got was a pat on the shoulder from time to time.since noah decided we were together, I haven't gone a day without at least a hug from her.

“I thought you liked it when i'm warm?”God damn it, Noah let me go. She has a point though I did tell her that last January when we were waiting outside for one of her friends.

“I'll admit I like it when you're hot in the midst of winter but it's July and less enjoyable.”

“I can cool down if you want?”Just like that she cools down at least ten degrees,

That's...new?

“Ok that's actually pretty nice, but i still need to pee noah, let. Me. go”

“Fine fine sassy pants”

She finally unwrapped her arms from around my waist and I bolted to the bathroom. Behind me I hear her annoying ass giggle. Bitch, it's her fault I need to pee this bad. I don't even know why she insists on movie nights. All we do is lie on the couch while Noah holds me hostage for the duration of the movie while roasting me like a pig, then she puts me to bed and goes wherever she goes at night. It's almost too domestic, it kinda makes me sick to my stomach.

I've never been in a real relationship ( don't go thinking I think of this as a real relationship) . All I'm saying is, this is the closest I've been to said real relationship. Of course I end up trapped in a fake relationship with a demon, it fits my life wonderfully.

After i'm done peeing i wash my hands for entirely way too long and sit and dry my hands for a extended period of time i decide to go get some water from the kitchen to avoid noah's death grip for just a few more minutes, Just as i reach the kitchen i hear a faint “babe what's taking so goddamn long” so i decide to take my time. I picked up a glass and headed to the sink. Once the cup is full ( it was entirely too fast in my opinion) I decide it's time to face the music so I turn around and… slip. Now I have no idea what I slipped on but I do know I hit my head, bad.

SPN Angst Appreciation Day 2018

Summary: After the events of Swan Song, Y/n tries to move on.

“Dean! No!”

“Sam! No!”

Every night it’s the same thing. Y/n falls asleep, dreams of one of her brothers dying, and then wakes herself up, covered in sweat. No matter how many times her brothers die and come back; it never gets easier. She knows some day; they won’t come back.

Not only is she afraid she’s going to lose her brothers to death; but she’s afraid they’ll consider her useless.

She’s not the greatest at hunting. She has her mother’s clumsiness. She’s actually been one of those people whom shot themselves in the foot.

Dean still has yet to let that one go.

She loves to read; but when it comes to lore, she’s super slow.

Sam and Dean try to make her feel like she’s pulling her weight; but she knows how they truly feel.

When she was a kid, Dean was able to do the laundry, fix them food, and make sure they got to school; even though the latter was mostly just to please Sam.

She can’t even fix a meal without burning something.

She’s good at cleaning the weapons; she knows that. When their father, John, told her he was impressed with how well she could take care of a gun; she never let that go. No matter how many times Dean would give her a hard time when she messed up; she would mentioned how John would always pick her over Dena to clean his weapons.

Today… well today; cleaning weapons just don’t really matter when you’ve lost a brother; again.

Sam fell to the pit with Lucifer and Michael.

Y/n pleaded, yelled, cried, and cursed at Castiel; trying to get him to tell her a way to free Sam. She just couldn’t believe the angel when he told her there was no way to save Sam without freeing Lucifer and Michael as well.

Dean wasn’t much helped either. After they found a motel to stay at for the night; he left.

A couple of days later, Y/n found him at Lisa’s house; trying to live a normal, domestic life. She didn’t want to take that away from him; so she left.

Y/n stayed with Bobby for about a month before she felt his hospitality run out. She knows Bobby cares for her; but without her brothers, who is she really?

She tried hunting, but with not having many skills in that department, no hunter would partner up with her; and hunting alone almost got her killed more times than she cares to admit.

She hates being isolated; hates the loneliness. She hates it so much she has let herself find comfort in one-night stands. She tells herself she at least doesn’t have to sleep alone; even if the face beside her is different every night.

* * *

A few months later, Y/n is visited by a familiar face. He offers her a deal she doesn’t think she can resist.

“Come on, love. Stop fearing isolation; embrace it. With these new skills, you can hunt alone; you won’t have to worry about someone else getting hurt. You’ll be greatest hunter on the earth.”

“Until my ten years are up.”

“This isn’t a normal deal, darling. I will still have your soul for eternity; but instead of collecting in ten years; I’ll collect when you die.”

“That doesn’t make since. I’ll die after the ten years are up.”

“My hellhounds won’t come for you until the day you’re supposed to die; whether that’s a week from now, or thirty years from now. You will still die the day you’re supposed to die.”

“Why do you want my soul?”

“I have my reasons.”

“Tell me.”

“That’s not part of the deal.”

Y/n mulls over her options.

“I need a decision, love. Spending the rest of your life, knowing you’ll be alone and worthless to your brothers; or still being alone, but being respected and feared.”

“You’re a cold-hearted bastard.”

“One that’s still waiting on an answer.”

“Deal.“

Where Our Nightmares Come From

Summary: A dark past landed you in a psychiatric ward. Life seems good for a while, or at least as good as it can be considering your accommodation, until a new patient suddenly appears. His name is Sam and his brother is certainly not a fan of the friendship the two of you forge in your mutual hell. As you become comfortable with your new routine things start to go wrong and demons begin appearing. All of a sudden you’re thrown into a spiral, and you find yourself on the road again accompanied by an angel you hadn’t seen since your childhood and two hunter’s who’ve found they’d prefer to share you than fight over you. In this story you’re confronted by old enemies, old friends and an apocalypse that won’t wait for you to get your shit together.

A/N: Part’s 1 - 5 are all set in season 7 episode 17 ‘The Born Again Identity’. It’s a very tweaked version of the episode. But every part afterwards follows one episode each. They mostly follow the episodes quite closely, though there are a few tweaks here and there to fit in the reader and some scenes that I added myself. As a result Part 6 and onwards are all quite long (10 000 words plus in many cases). This series is going to be very long and I’ll write it for as long as I can, or until I’ve written right up to the end of Supernatural.
