Hello Defiant began very differently. The original story had Scout escaping a virtual reality used for people in stasis aboard a spaceship only to find the AI of the ship had gone insane. But that was too big a jump into horror and I wanted something more emotional. For me Hello Defiant is the part of the Jungle Book when Mowgli joins civilization.
