Yeah this is a joke and yeah, I smirked a little at first. But I don’t think poking fun at a very serious issue is helpful at all. Really, it’s kinda terrible.

The male loneliness epidemic actually identifies a very complex social development. We had this discussion in sociology 110 last semester (studying the causes behind the mle involves fairly rudimentary sociological theory). I’ll try to keep this part short:

The most pressing job of women under the patriarchy is providing emotional support. Men can’t be emotionally in touch because that involves engaging in “feminine,” and therefore weak, activity. Women essentially fulfill the basic human need of emotional work and they do this through their roles as wives, mothers, and romantic or sexual partners. What happens when women want to be something other than servants? They stop fulfilling the emotional needs of men. Men aren’t allowed to fill that role even platonically, so it remains empty

THIS IS NOT THE FAULT OF WOMEN OR FEMINISM. IT IS THE FAULT OF THE PATRIARCHY.

So now we have a large swath of men who are not guaranteed the emotional energy of the women around them especially if they can’t get that from their mothers. But, they haven’t been taught how to seek out emotional connection without romantic or sexual ties. Boom. Male loneliness epidemic.

Now that I’ve finished today’s lecture, I’m gonna hop up onto this nice little soapbox here.

I think the fact that the male loneliness epidemic has been identified and is being discussed by men indicates some desire to evolve away from the oppression of the patriarchy. It’s important to note that everyone is harmed by the patriarchy regardless of what benefit they may receive from it and it seems that many men are beginning to reject patriarchal ideas because of this (this doesn’t apply to MGTOW or incel rhetoric. That may become a different post). While minority genders don’t owe men in any way, I think we should be encouraging productive discussion of men’s mental health or at the very least not shaming men for being open about it. That kind of shit is very blatantly patriarchal regardless of whatever “feminist” or “progressive” mask is put on it.

I would also like to point out that any rhetoric that says harm can’t possibly be done to this one specific demographic of people because insert convoluted argument here is inherently really fucking flawed especially if the demographic in question is based on immutable characteristics like sex and gender.

Nevermind. I guess I don’t find the male loneliness epidemic funny at all.

Barbie x Ken is a dogshit ship imo

One of the film’s main points is that Barbie isn’t romantically interested in Ken and is in no way obligated to be in a relationship with him because he wants it. Shipping them just flat out ignores this premise which sucks because it’s a message that a lot of women and afab people struggle to internalize due to the patriarchy stripping us of our emotional autonomy.

This issue is exemplified in the whole niceguy/“give him a chance” narrative. It doesn’t matter if a dude is nice or really cares about the girl he’s interested in; she doesn’t have to date him! Nor should she be made to feel guilty for not having a mutual interest. Ken never “earned” the right to date Barbie by following her around and she certainly never owed him a relationship to make up for ignoring his attention (she wasn’t even aware that she did so).

There is also something to be said about Barbie’s possible asexuality and how forcing the character into a shipping dynamic ignores one of the best (and very few) portrayals of being aroace.

This sort of thing is really frustrating with modern feminism. If you’re female or feminine in some way then you’re either a strong amazing role model or you’re supporting the patriarchy. You can’t just exist. Everything you do is scrutinized, criticized (or praised), and then used to define your entire identity. It’s like society went straight from “stay in the kitchen or you’re hysterical” to “be constantly strong and fight the patriarchy or you’re anti-feminist.”

Putting every woman or fem person in these extreme categories is so damaging. Instead of seeing fems as the multi-dimensional humans that they are, society has gone back around to defining them by their feminine identity.

I’m a person, not a representative of all feminine people damn it.
