something that makes me laugh and confuse me is that grrm took 20 + years to reveal where the hell Ned got the name sansa for his daughter cause it really seems like an out of nowhere name, we know why all the stark kids are named as they have constant repeating cycles mostly for the boys and arya was named after her great grandmother but then sansa as a name becomes so strange and when its revealed its a stark family member GENERATIONS back who got forcefully married to her (half?) uncle because of a birthright dispute and had no issue ,you have no idea how confused i was that george/ned would pick this name for sansa😭 but the more i thought about sansa's story/themes and narrative it made a whole lot of sense for her namesake (especially if reverse parallels to j0nsa is gonna be a plot point somewhere) it is jarring that in story logic Ned would take a name so far back in years for his daughter instead of something recent but whatever i guess
Oh 100% GRRM had the succession crisis in mind when he went back and added/changed the Stark family chart.
The fact that he went back and added Sansa's namesake so early in the lineage, straight after/during a succession crisis which is resolved (on the surface) by marrying a Jonnel, her half-uncle, I know George was giggling, laughing, twirling his hair writing this lol.
I genuinely don't know what we could assume Ned to be thinking while naming his first born daughter Sansa. Maybe, 'meh, Sansa is a northern name, hasn't been used recently, unique enough, let's go with it'. I really like the implications of it though. A name that hasn't been used in long creates a less-confused public identity for the one who has it now, suitable for a new/groundbreaking leader, dont'cha think? And the fact that the name was of a Stark woman who was the rightful Lady of Winterfell and was denied that title through marriage only to come around a hundred years later and have a Stark woman with the same name being granted the same title, maybe even higher (QiTN anyone?) while successfully clarifying the succession crisis she is in and not have her marriage steal her rights. Man, anti-parallel circular storytelling in asoiaf is going to be the death of me.

Alannys/Balon - there were times she might have killed him
Theirs had never been the most peaceful marriage. Alannys had grown up a wilful girl, always trying to prove herself against an older sister and a brother, frustrating her parents, who nonetheless saw the iron in her and we proud. She did not stop with her husband either, always speaking her mind, always ready to pick up a blade or other sharp object - Balon never touched her unless she wanted him to. She knew his brothers told him he needed to keep her in line more, but much like her parents, he saw the iron in her and it aroused him. They fought and they screamed at one another and there were times when she felt she might have killed her, but somehow they always made it work; they were right for each other like that in their youth.
Then they took all her sons away, and the tears she shed rusted all her iron through rotten. Balon saw, and sent her away. For better, perhaps, or she might have killed him for true this time.

"Though none doubted that Aegon Targaryen was the final authority in all matters relating to the governance of the realm" is an intriguing line, especially when it's promptly followed by explaining how much autonomy and political strength the Queens had.
I think part of of what makes it interesting, is that it is definitely true on some level, but why is it true and to what extent is it true... that's what is interesting? I'm not sure how to explain it, but I think it's incorrect to think that the "historian's" bias only leads to omissions of truth and additions of falsehoods. Here I feel like, there's overall weight given to this statement that comes from the bias.
Because the book pretty often seems to show that they pretty much act in lock step with each other (to the point where it seems like, while Rhaenys is alive anyway, they don't appear to publicly argue), the Queens also sit on the iron throne, which is literally the symbol of power and authority over the land. Visenya is later able to publicly browbeat him and force him to concede when creating the Kingsguard. These things imply a level of political power.
But that's not me saying that Aegon isn't the voice of final authority and power, he very clearly is, just by the nature of him being declared the King. But that's clearly a position his wives put him in, when they landed on the hill, Visenya crowned Aegon and Rhaenys dubbed him King and shield of the people. Aegon is the king, but his sisters are kingmaker, which is a position of authority... except that role gets officially handed over to the Faith. The day the Faith crowns Aegon is the date his reign officially starts which is interesting because it grants the Faith the power to legitimize Aegon's reign over his wives. But even so, his wives sit the throne, the dragon banner is a three headed dragon and Aegon builds his city on the site where he was first crowned by his wives, not in Oldtown.
I guess what I'm saying is that there's an interesting tension here between Aegon, his wives, and the faith, and each group's level of power and authority. And the "historian" doesn't seem to want to interrogate it or question it because it fits neatly enough into his worldview that anything that doesn't can be easily handwaved away as an oddity.
It feels like all three of these groups have power. But Visenya and Rhaenys used that power to grant Aegon authority and maybe they would have been seen by history has having authority as kingmakers as well, but the act of the Faith crowning Aegon being the "official" crowning, means that the Faith gets the authority of acting as Kingmaker. The Faith and Aegon grant authority to each other in a way that leaves out Visenya and Rhaenys (quite literally since they weren't even at his "official" crowning).

top 20 favourite book-only asoiaf characters (as voted by our followers) ⤷ #3. jeyne poole
Arya had her father's eyes, the grey eyes of the Starks. A girl her age might let her hair grow long, add inches to her height, see her chest fill out, but she could not change the color of her eyes. That's Sansa's little friend, the steward's girl. Jeyne, that was her name. Jeyne Poole.

TrisTheon + "so much has changed but I'm the same, yes I'm the same!"
They were boys together on Pyke - Theon remembered that well, even when he hadn't seen Tris in years, even hanging in Stannis' tower, even though it was Symond who had been Theon's agemate back then. But he still remembered, and Tris did too apparently, from the way his eyes stole quick glances at Theon across the campfires and on the long treck through the snow and the woods. By the time they hit seawater, Theon wanted to shake him a little, to say, "But you remember what I was like before. Don't give me those eyes, Botley, I know you remember, and I'm not really that different now." It's foolish - because of course he is different, probably they both are, but it doesn't really feel like it when Tris smiles at him, too warm for the start of winter. Improbably, infuriatingly, with Tris beside him, he feels almost like he did before, before any of it. It's a feeling he likes.

The truth was, the princess was braver than her brother, and brighter and more confident as well. Her wits were quicker, her courtesies more polished. Nothing ever daunted her, not even Joffrey.

Another amazing piece I won in the 2023 round of @fandomtrumpshate. This one is by the incredible arts_and_seabass (IG).
This one has a bit of a context! It's an illustration of two scenes, one from my fic, Carry Me Home, and the other from i know my kingdom awaits by @hell-heron (go, go read it, it's amazing!). The scenes parallel each other somewhat intentionally, as IKMKA is an AU of CMH. Back-to-back shots of two different instances of Theon saving his younger, redhead "foster brother" who looks up to him, Robb Stark in the first and Greydon Goodbrother in the second.
