Took me until about halfway through college before I realized “study” means “play with the material in a variety of ways until you understand it” and not just “read the assigned chapters and do the homework” and I think that probably should have been discussed at some point prior to that.

Day 2: Dreams and Nightmares

Another night, another nightmare. Alfred lay upon the bed, one arm stretched above his head and sweat glistening off his bare chest, the sheets wrapped around his legs. If someone had been in the room, they would have seen his eyes twitching beneath closed eyelids, soft moans and whispered “no”s coming from his lips.

In tonight’s nightmare, he was in a gray world devoid of any other living things. Plants  were doubled over, wilted. The trees were skeletal, branches fingers that scratched at the sky with each breeze. The air was hazy, filling Alfred’s nose and mouth with the acrid smell and taste of burnt. Then, suddenly, there was no more smell or taste. Like static on an ancient television screen, he sniffed and there was nothing to smell but a necrotic dead smell.

He kept walking, but there was nothing more. No one. No thing. No one that he loved was here. No thing that he held dear was here. No joy.

Panting, he sat bolt upright, panting. Running a single hand through his hair, combing back his bangs, he glanced at the clock. Two in the morning. This was a moment to gamble.

He could choose to go back to sleep, and hope for rest or face more nightmares. Or, he could just stay awake and greet the day, facing more of the never-ending exhaustion.
